5 out of 5 stars Survival of the Fittest..........2007-05-17

I listened to samples of this music on Amazon, and purchased this on 05/11/2007 (got it on 05/15/2007 - fast delivery!). This album is nothing less than outstanding.

The other reviewers' echo my opinion of this work, I just wanted to say that this man (like Miles Davis) was years ahead of his time. I had "Man-Child" by Mr. Hancock, but with that album (as Headhunters), it would have taken me awhile to get my arms around it. Heavy stuff!! Five stars!

5 out of 5 stars Survival of the Funkiest.......2005-08-17

Easily rates as one of the very best jazz/funk albums of all time. The title track "God Make Me Funky" is as funky as it gets. This is Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters", recording their first (and best) record without Herbie or any other keyboard player present, although he did produce it. This allows for more space, in more ways than one...

Without Herbie's full, dense keyboards and synths of this period, there's much more open space, giving a better opportunity to hear the individual players, all of which have phenomenal tone and chops. Paul Jackson's incredibly punchy Fender bass sound and funk technique are second to none. The great Bennie Maupin is excellent as always. Acid funk pioneer Blackbird McKnight is the ultimate electric funk guitarist, playing everything from precision wah-wah rhythms to absolutely insane effects-washed leads. Drums by Mike Clark and all sorts of heavy percussion by Bill Summers are excellent.

And speaking of "space", this is Space Funk at it's best. I mean, it even says "The best Space-Funk album" in big letters on the back cover of this RCA Victor Gold Series reissue!

Highly recommended for fans of the Herbie Hancock Headhunders albums or any of the great Miles Davis electric stuff. Their second album "Straight From The Gate" is not nearly as good, but has a few interesting cuts, and another ridiculously wild guitar solo by Blackbird McKnight.

4 out of 5 stars Survival Of The Fittest.......2004-06-17

This album was one of the first albums in my record collection. The more I listen to this album the more I appreciate it.I am a big fan of what Herbie Hancock was doing at this time, and this is definitely his band minus him.I will admit that this album had to grow on me.I was just getting into Pure Fusion at this time and this album is very deep.

    4 out of 5 stars A Back In The Day Jazz-Funk Classic.......2001-08-08

This was the album cut by Herbie Hancock's back-up group soon after the massive unexpected popularity of Herbie's Headhunters LP. It's actually much better than Herbie's own follow-up LP, Thrust. The 1st track, God Made Me Funky, is everything the title promises, with a really great, greasy guitar riff (by Blackbird McKnight) holding it all together. One of the very best jazz-funk cuts of all time. The first & last tracks have vocals, the other 4 are all instrumentals.

Most of these tracks would have fit very comfortably in Herbie's Headhunters LP. One or two are not quite as interesting as the rest, but the highlights (including the aforementioned God Made Me Funky, Daffy's Dance & If You've Got It, You'll Get It) are way worth the price. The sound quality is first class.

If you've been disappointed by more recent Headhunters releases, join the club. This one is the real thing -- accept no substitutes.

4 out of 5 stars Rich and Funky!!.......2001-06-17

In the 70's Hancock was a king. This "Headhunters" band was of a particular mythology. I own this on vinyl. It is an ABSOLUTE TRIP !!! This is something! Headhunters and Thrust had funk. Mwandiishi and Sextant had space. This has space and funk. I swear, when I was in high school in the late 70's (sucking up whatever US releases of Miles I could find) this album scared me! It is sooooo intense, psychadelic and FIRM !!! It wasn't ever "more Herbie". It was seriously KICKIN "first generation" fusion, standing on it's own, at it's best then. I'm still waiting>

P.S. I own the CD release, now, and it sounds fine. Excellent addition to the "Mwandishi" period!!! I mean... REALLY GOOD addition !!

4 out of 5 stars Another Stellar Collection from Rebound Records........2000-04-15

Budget-line subsidiary Rebound Records has made quite the name for itself with its specialty-priced '80s compilations. Usually, the tracks are obscure favorites, or decade standouts. This release is no exception. The 12" version of "Tainted Love" is a knockout, as is nearly every track, except for the Joe Jackson and Squeeze contributions. Not to worry; with tracks like ABC's "Be Near Me," Bananarama's "Robert DeNiro's Waiting," Tears For Fears' "Change," the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star," and the Go-Gos' "Our Lips Are Sealed," you will find yourself extremely satisfied with this delightful disc. (And, hey, it's easy on the ears AND the pockets.)

      3 out of 5 stars Finding 88 Lines.......1999-11-17

The original version of 88 Lines does exist out there. Look through the endless 80's collections that are out now. Vol. 2, Living in Oblivion, and Just Can't Get Enough, Vol. 3-New Wave Hits Of The 80's. There's even a collection, Hits From Underground 80'S, that includes Juanita, Juanita.

4 out of 5 stars Good enough variety for a trip around town.......1998-07-09

Original tracks, a couple of "B" siders, but overall a good mix. You'll keep it in the car's CD player for a couple of rides home from work. -Ted Havill

          5 out of 5 stars A certified classic.......2004-01-27

This is the first Mobb Deep song I ever heard, and still my favorite (I think it's better than "Shook Ones, Part II"). I fondly remember the very first time I ever heard this song; I was visiting a club in Memphis in 1995 and came upon a local crew freestyling to the instrumental version backstage. I had never before heard such a simplistic yet beautifully brutal beat. I asked one of them what it was and he told me. After that, I scrambled to buy a copy of "The Infamous" just so that I could hear this song again.

This song's stunningly atmospheric beat is certainly its defining characteristic. Yes, the beat is fairly simplistic by today's standards - piano riffs set to a heavy bassline. However, they're some of the best piano riffs you'll ever hear. When placed against a pounding drum loop, the result is a bleak, haunting soundscape that conjures up images of gritty inner-city streets and allows you to imagine yourself in the same setting. In other words, the exact effect that a gangsta rap track should have on the listener. While modern rap tracks by producers like Lil Jon and Mannie Fresh rely upon dozens of sounds working together in concert, I think that "Survival of the Fittest" is a perfect example of how far simplicity can go. Havoc deserves major props for this track, and I wish that other rap producers would follow his lead and experiment more often with raw beats like this.

Of course, a good beat needs some capable rappers to flow over it, and fortunately, Prodigy and Havoc are more than up to the task. To this day, I'm still wondering why these two are not mentioned more whenever I hear people talking about the best rap lyricists of all time. Just peep this part of Prodigy's verse:

"There's a war goin' on outside, no man is safe from
You can run but you can't hide forever
From these, streets, that we done took
You walkin' wit ya head down, scared to look
You shook, cause ain't no such things as halfway crooks
They never around when the beef cooks in my part of town
          It's similar to Vietnam"

Word. Who else but streetwise homies like P and Hav could convey the hopelessness and unceasing violence of New York's streets? Their vivid lyrics beautifully complement the equally vivid beat. The very title, "Survival of the Fittest", suggests a place of great turmoil where only a few will manage to survive and live normal lives. If they've got the same street smarts in real life that they display in this song, Havoc and Prodigy are definitely among "the fittest".

Bottom line: This is one of the greatest rap songs ever recorded. It not only stands the test of time, but also remains the epitome of musical and lyrical perfection in hip-hop. Whether you buy the album or the single, you MUST own "Survival of the Fittest". No rap fan should be without it.

5 out of 5 stars Mobb Deep- Survival of the Fittest.......2003-09-12

In 1995 Mobb Deep dropped there second album, a classic called "The Infamous" and brought there hardcore reality music to the forefront of the Hip Hop world. "Survival of the Fittest" is one of the tracks that makes that album so great, and my favourite from it. Prodigy opens with a line that many now know: "There's a war goin on outside, no man is safe from You could run but you can't hide forever..." between verses the Mobb drops an addictive chorus of "Yo, yo We livin this til the day that we die Survival of the fittest only the strong survive(We still livin it)". Wicked Piano Rifts back up excellent verses making "Survival of the Fittest" a track to remember.
