This is a fabulous collection. If you can get it cheap its an essential purchase, even if you have got all his original albums. The range of music on offer here is amazing. The early tracks like 'Love Story' have a Phil Spector like feel to them. Big orchestral arrangements, contrast wonderfully with Newmans southern drawl and simple Piano parts. Later tracks perhaps, better show the true talent of this great songwriter. From beautiful ballads like 'I think its going to rain today' to various degrees of satire and wit (take your pick from many songs). Randy Newman wrote numerous hits for other people so 'Mama told me not to come' is better known as a Three Dog Night Hit. 'Simon Smith....' was a hit for Alan Price.

Picking favourite tracks is difficult, but upon recently listening to 'Political Science' again, its relevance today is the same as it was in 1972 when I think Nixon was President of the U.S. "South America stole our name, lets drop the big one they'll be no-one left to blame us". However 'My Life is Good.' remains my favourite for his indignant delivery "My Life is good you old bag". A splendid reference to Bruce Springsteen follows later in the song "Rand I'm tired how would you like to be the boss for a while" - cue a Clarence Clemons like Sax solo...

Randy Newman is a criminally under-rated musician and songwriter. Get this collection and find out what you've been missing. Better still if you ever get a chance to catch one of his rare concerts see him live. To that end the last track on the album is probably the best 'Lonely at the Top' (which I believe he wrote with Sinatra in mind), which captures Newman in concert alone at the Piano in 1970. Its just magical.

'Lonely At The Top' is the best possible introduction to one of the most overlooked musical geniuses of the 20th century. If you're not familiar (or only briefly familiar) with the music of Randy Newman then this compilation will give you a fantastic selection of classics from the various stages of his career, from the charming pop ballads of his first album ('Love Story', 'Living Without You' and 'I Think It's Going To Rain Today'), through the cold, sharp sarcasm of Sail Away ('Political Science', 'God's Song', 'Sail Away'), and to the fantastic 80s guitar pop of 'Little Criminals' ('Jolly Coppers on Parade', 'Short People'). Eace and every one of the songs here is memorable, great songs like 'Rider In The Rain', 'My Old Kentucky Home', 'Rednecks', the disturbing 'Christmas in Capetown' and of course the unforgettable hit 'Lonely At The Top'. Slightly odd is the exclusion of the massive hit 'You Can Leave Your Hat On'; otherwise, for the casual listener, 'Lonely At The Top' is all the Randy Newman you should need (though, of course, it lacks his lovely 90s Disney themes like 'You've Got a Friend In Me' from Toy Story and 'If I Didn't Have You' from Monsters Inc.) If you enjoyed it, though, you are more than welcomed to make a stab at his wonderful albums (the best place to start would be either 'Sail Away', 'Good Old Boys', 'Randy Newman' or 'Little Criminals').

Perfect.......2000-10-31

The perfect one-disc introduction to a great singer/songwriter. I might have chosen a few additional tracks (the "Born Again" album is not represented), but not at the expense of deleting any on this disc. The excellent remastering lets you appreciate his brilliant arrangements and his under-appreciated piano playing.

Great single disc compilation of Randy.......1999-07-06

If you can't (or won't) spring for the superb boxset that came out last year, this is a terrific summation of Randy's career. Can't argue with most of the song selections (although there are a few additional selections I would have added).

I'd suggest that if you like Randy Newman you may want to investigate Lyle Lovett or Harry Nilsson. The former may look a little funny (hey, who doesn't?), but has one of the most unique songwriting voices in contemporary music. Harry Nilsson, unfortunately, isn't with us any more. Harry was probably the only contemporary of Randy's that displayed as much depth as a songwriter. Harry was blessed with a 3 1/2 octave range and rich voice that made him a stand out among the artists of the 70's His album Pussycats has just been reissued with bonus tracks.

Anyway, a good compilation.

The Singers were overshadowed by a beautiful orchestra........2001-02-22

I agree with the previous reviewer in that the King's Singers do sound much better acappella. Their strength is in the way they perform as a vocal group; the flawless ensemble technique that they possess. This technique is obscured by the orchestra. The majority of the album could have been performed by any vocal group, and there would have been not much of a difference in quality. On a positive note, I percieved the orchestrations to be extremely creative. When I first heard the album, having the original performances of these songs ingrained in my mind, I was not particularly turned on by it. It sounded very odd. A few months later, however, I dug the CD out again and listened to it more carefully. I discovered that what I previously thought of as radical and drastic changes to the original recordings actually was a refreshing, poetic interpretation of popular songs.Don't buy this album thinking that you are buying a copy of the King's Singers performing traditional arrangements of America's favorite popular music. Rather, you are buying a rendition of this music that reads more into the lyrics than perhaps even the original recordings did. It is a more classical sound, and it is something to be listened to seriously. I am forced to give this recording four stars. I thought the orchestra and the arrangements were exceptional. I especially liked The Sound of Silence and Homeward Bound. However, I bought this album excepting yet another example of vocal mastery from the King's Singers, and that is not here. They do not shine when backed up by an orchestra.

Enjoyable, but not their best work.......2000-06-26

I first heard this recording when I bought a boxed set of 6 King's Singers CDs, and given the repertoire on the album, I actually though I would enjoy it more than what I did. There's nothing actually bad about it, but I thought they could have made more of the songs, particularly Vincent and The Sound of Silence. This recording is accompanied by an orchestra, something which the King's Singers don't do that often, but the actual orchestration on this CD is very well done. Although I still personally believe that their best work has always been a cappella. Nonetheless, one of the things I appreciate most about the King's Singers is their ability to perform an extremely diverse repertoire, and that fact alone still makes this album worthwhile. My favourite tracks are Simon Smith, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and It's Lonely at the Top.
