4 out of 5 stars Pieces of Pieces--4.5 stars.......2007-06-05

According to Keith Anderson's CD insert (in English, French, & Spanish), "Georg Philipp Telemann [1681-1767] was among the most distinguished composers of his time." He was a friend of Bach's & was Bach's 2nd son's godfather. This CD contains many of Telemann's best & most famous works. I have other versions on CD's, esp. the Suite in A-moll (minor), Viola Concerto in G major, Trumpet Concerto in D major, & table music. For more of the latter--there's a 2 CD set "Dinner Music" B0001XBBPO Georg Philipp Telemann; Dinner Music Vol. 1 & 2 with Concertos by Johann Hummel & Franz Richter and "Musique de table" by Essential Classics/Sony. This CD is a generous 71:07 in 23 tracks/movements. It's strength is in its selection & variety. This, however, is also its weakness--many selections are pieces of pieces--not the entire composition. Thus, they appear shorter than other versions--mostly due to this excerpting. Similarly & simultaneously plus & minus, except for 2 by the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, the pieces are performed by different orchestras. Thus, I'd say this CD is a fine introduction to Telemann, but suggest further exploration to comprehend the fullness of his compositions. Still, I would give this a 5 star except for one thing. The lead-in piece, arguably Telemann's most famous, the A-moll is simply IMHO played too fast. It lacks the majesty shown in other renditions of this piece. Not a good way to start.

Also, I'd recommend: Telemann: Viola Concerto; Don Quichotte; Hamburger Ebb und Flut /ASMF * Marriner and The Sensuous Baroque

4 out of 5 stars A great baroque album by one of the masters of baroque composition.......2007-03-04

George Philipp Telemann is a great introduction in to the world of baroque music. This album was the very first classical album that I bought (about 10 years ago) and I have found my love for baroque and classical music to increase exponentially ever since.
This album shows the true beauty of baroque by using instruments to their fullest potential. The baroque period was one of growth in knowledge of the arts and music theory played a large part in that knowledge.
Telemann, in my opinion, was one of the greatest baroque artists. I know that works such as Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" and Handel's "Messiah" were the defining works of baroque, but Telemann used the smaller and more intimate groupings like chamber music. Even his orchestations were minimalized so as to accentuate the instrument on which he chose to focus.
Telemann was a master of the baroque age, if somewhat unsung, and I would recommend any of his albums, but this one has a special place for me as it was the first classical album that I bought in a now excessively large classical library.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction at a Great Price.......2004-12-06

I had heard some of Telemann's work on interent classical stations and wanted to learn more. This is a great introduction to a great composer at a great price. I found the quality satisfactory and my stereo is fairly advanced. The music flows nicely, which is not always the case with "best of" compilations. This will become a core part of my classical collection.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Baroque Variety.......2003-12-23

Here for baroque lovers or those interested in exploring one of its most prominent composers is a collection of some of the very best of Telemann.

What an enormous output this great German composer put out! From church music to chamber music, Telemann uses all the styles of his era, from Italian to French to German, he does them all execeptionally well with his own style of clarity and fluidity.

The Viola Concerto is absolutely gorgeous, and it's a shame that this resonant, sensuous instrument doesn't not have a wider repertoire. Kyselak is marvelous in his phrasing and expressiveness.

The Recorder Concerto by Stivin is just delightful and exemplary of the fine liltiness of baroque. The Quartet in G Major from Tafelmusik I is admirably performed by the Orchestra of the Golden Age with passion and sensitivity.

The Overture in D and C Major, Darmstadt, is just exquisite. This is exciting music with great swellings and undertonings throughout.

I thoroughly enjoy baroque and this collection with its varying instrumental groupings highlighted and the variety of styles and genres is truly stimulating and relaxing to listen to. For the price, this is just an outstanding find.

Robert King and his Consort provide a fantastic recording catalog of such for us baroque lovers.

5 out of 5 stars From a music lover, not a critic.......2007-04-10

Many of these performances are new to me. That is the beauty of being 59 years old and still learning. My knowledge of classical music is based on what moves me. While others talk about all the other versions and other conductors, I just want to let other people know that these recordings give me great pleasure. While some may find Michel Beroff to be less than adequate, I enjoy his renditions of the piano concertos. I have heard other renditions and find that they all have their places. These concertos move me a great deal. That is my only criteria.

5 out of 5 stars Masur - Champion of Liszt.......2003-12-19

Before he became the embattled leader of the New York Philharmonic, Kurt Masur made a name for himself by making brilliant recordings with the Gewandhaus-Orchester Leipzig, these Liszt Orchestral Works foremost among them. It is delightful to have these recordings in print again, and for them all to be collected on seven discs in an inch-thick paper box set is even better. Masur's performances of the "Tone Poems" in particular rank among the best of all-time, along with Haitink and Golovanov in my opinion (see my review of the latter on his "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" title). Also included in this set are the works for Piano and Orchestra, and while Michel Beroff's renditions don't quite measure up to my favorite accounts by Arrau, Cliburn, Janis, Katchen, Richter or Zimerman, they are certainly first-rate. Oddly, my only complaint is that EMI seems to have taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" box are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting............2006-01-27

I got this as a Christmas present because I have been interested in Goebel's recordings for a while. Frankly, I had never even heard of these chamber pieces before. Yes, I was aware of other flute quartets, but not these. I searched and searched and could not find any other recordings of these, thus not being able to compare this with anything. All I can really say is that these are different than your "average baroque concerto." You don't often hear baroque chamber music played often, and on period intruments at that. Each part is very exposed, which alows the listener to really piece together the songs like a jigsaw puzzle andreally get into them and enjoy them that much more. I think the scoring is very well done on Teleman's part - I wouldn't expect anything like this out of Vivaldi or Handel, who though I admre, don't think they had the brains to come up with something like this.

One more thing which is just awesome, is the energy and intensity throughout this disc. The various players never lose focus, it seems. All of the tracks are exciting and I love them all.

This is a very different recording, but it definitely belongs in everyone's collection.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have! Absolutely jaw-dropping.......2005-10-03

I quickly became a fan of Reinhard Goebel and his Musica Antique Koln emsemble when I purchased the Sinfonia Spirituosa String Concertos and have been itching to obtain another equally exciting, exhilerating and gorgeous piece of work ever since. This latest recording fits the bill perfectly. (Well, actually, it far surpasses the spirituosa string concerto disk -and that's no easy feat.) NOBODY plays Telemann like this group. I would rate this recording 10 stars if I could.

5 out of 5 stars Sparkling repertoire performed with dazzling virtuosity.......2005-07-04

Here is a case of expectations richly rewarded. Telemann's flute quartets are vibrant and tuneful, at times making great demands on the soloists. The Musica Antiqua Koln are in all ways up to the challenge, delivering a musical bouquet that is at various turns elegant, soothing, and exciting.

Baroque music -- "exciting"? Yes, quite! As an example, have a listen to the final movement of the A minor quartet (track 18). The runs and bouncing tunes jumping from oboe to recorder to violin should have you smiling by the halfway point. Which is not to say that this music is all about Allegro and Vivace -- there are Adagio and Largo movements as well, which the soloists similarly relish by settling comfortably into their serenity and repose. This is music that is surely as rewarding for the players as it is for the listener.

There is a variety of color in the selections and sequencing that keeps the ear from tiring, and recorded sound quality is first-rate. The sonority of the authentic instruments is not in any way distracting, in fact the tone and expression are easily on a level with any modern-instrument ensemble.

If you are a fan of effervescent baroque then you will certainly want this in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Reihard Goebel, the glory of Koln.......2005-07-03

If there is a group of specialists on early chamber music
that is then with no doubt Reinhard Goebel and his
Musica Antiqua Koln. Herr Goebel is an authority on
early chamber music performance, this is his 8th recording of music of Georg Philipp Telemann(1681-1767) Herr Goebel
has been devoting recordings of the works since 1979; thus making Telemann a favorite composer of this early music group.
Herr Goebel and his musicians are well at home with this repertoire. The works in this recording are of the Flotenquartette (Flute Quartets) by Telemann. The Flutes used here are two very popular during the baroque periods the "transverse" or "German" Flute and the "French Flute" or Recorder. This recording is truly a great recording, and the sound is so clear that it sounds like you're there with them in the recording studio...Great historic music at a very competitive price....Goebel, Telemann and Musica Antiqua, the million dollar team of early music......

5 out of 5 stars Counterpoint to stereotyped and outdated criticism by Behrens.......2007-01-28

F. Behrens repeats a criticism often heard in the past: that Georg Philipp Telemann diluted his output by "writing too much". That idea, dropped by an obscure early 19th Century critic and mindlessly repeated until recently, has increasingly receded with the rollout of editions of Telemann compositions since World War II. Many have appeared for the first time in the publications of the Telemann Archiv, formerly in Kassel Germany, and now in Telemann's home town of Magdeburg.

In recent decades we've heard for the first time T's late choral orchestral works. These demonstrate startling originality and continuing innovation in form and style even in his 80's (e.g. Day of Judgment, around 1762).

I admit I had no high opinion of T. in my early music training. Little duets and chamber pieces suited for beginning recorder students were the only works I'd heard. A breakthrough for me came when the late great radio music host, Robert J. Lurtsema, at Boston's WGBH radio presented all availble recordings of Telemann compositions for the 300th anniversary of his birth in 1681.

I was astounded to her the variety and unique qualities in Telemann's compositions. Many times I was late to work because I couldn't bear to leave Lurtsema's Morning Pro Musica while he was playing a new Telemann work.

I learned that Telemann was "the boss" in contemporary eyes in high baroque Germany. He was also an admirable man in many respects. He was a democrat by philosophy and the first in Germany to open the aristocratic collegium musica concerts to the public in Leipzig (while still a student). He was the first classical composer to incorporate authentic folk music (Polish Hanaka) in "concert music" - in much the same way Joseph Haydn later did with Hungarian gypsy music.

Next was discovery of Telemann's unlimited imagination in terms of concocting new forms and instrumental combinations, and harmonic and rhythmic variety. He was the first to develop the quartet form, and used it for a variety of instruments. T. played all the instruments of the then orchestra and exhibited an unmatched gift for exploiting instrumental sonorities - something one of the reviewers mentioned in her comments.

Thus, for example, in addition to the wild Polish folk dance n the last movement of the Concerto for Flute and Recorder in E, Telemann utilized and contrasted the special character of flute and recorder in this fine concerto. He was the first to capture the special qualities of the low register of the clarinet (chalumeau) in the dark and brooding opening of the Concerto for Two Clarinets, and even coupled two double basses with a piccolo in the solo instrument group for his "Cricket Symphony"

Comparisons with Bach? Early in his career Telemann rejected what he called formalism, e.g. the strict counterpoint which J.S. Bach developed to its highest level in music. Instead, he brought orchestral counterpoint, or simultaneous use of instrumental color and melodic interactions, to a level never before seen.

This is a feature that I find immediately distinguishes T. from other baroque composers, namely that in his hands, the orchestra, or different parts of it interact on even level with the soloists in concerti.

But there's a potential pitfall in contemporary authentic instrument performance of Telemann. He was a "pre"romantic, who revelled in emotions, mood, and subtle harmonic, melodic and rhythmic shifts. Performances that are too focused on stylistic issues and ornamentation can make Telemann sound like just any other baroque work. The recent trends to loosen up emotional expression in baroque performance promises to reveal new values in Telemann works that didn't come forth to full efect in the past decades. Incidentally, this is less of a problem with Bach works, because of the importance of his contrapuntal motives, as contrasted with shades of mood and emotion and dynamics in Telemann.

I realize that I may not reach many of the previous viewers - or even Behrens - with this commentary, but felt that I should try to create a better balance of information about a composer who has been regaining his proper appreciation in recent decades.

5 out of 5 stars Snappy classical -- you will love this........2005-07-20

I made a wise choice in buying this CD. Or was it luck? Some of both, I suppose. What matters now is that I have it and it's awesome! I had some JP Sousa and Spitfire Band CDs. Now I also have the superbly elegant, snappy Darmstadt Overtures (Suites) by Georg P Telemann. Wow! It's great and five stars is no exaggeration.

5 out of 5 stars Sparkling Chamber Music.......2003-12-30

This is light and breezy chamber music at its best. Although not having the depth of Bach, Telemann's compositions here while in the employ of the court at Frankfurt are entertaining and inventive.

With lots of playfulness and color, these overtures or dances are just right for enjoyful baroque listening sessions. Just wonderful for a meal's background, or anytime.

The Cologne Chamber Orchestra plays with enthusiasm and sparkle, led by Helmut Muller-Bruhl.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music at a Great Price.......2003-05-27

If you like baroque music then it would be hard not to like this. This is a great CD to play while sitting down for dinner with a good bottle of red wine. I own some much more highly acclaimed baroque CD's that are less enjoyable than this. At this price it is worth all 5 stars.

I had been searching for a baroque CD which would come as close as possible to the soundtrack for Restoration (which was original composition as well as Purcell). I found it incredibly difficult to find suites that capture the aristocratic feel as well as a rich baroque flare. Jean-Baptiste Lully came mighty close as well as some Purcell CD's I purchased. I had heard of Telemann but was not really familiar with his style and had heard him compared to Vivaldi, which for me is sort of baroque lite.

I went ahead, closed my eyes and added this CD to my cart. Out of three other classical/baroque purchases, including the new Yo-Yo Ma, "Simply Baroque II" (which is beautiful), my breath was taken away at the first listen of this. I cannot express how stunning the arrangements are!

If you are looking for sweeping baroque suites that have an ability to catapult you into the world of baroque, this is for you. If you prefer more "traditional" classical style, stick with Vivaldi.

5 out of 5 stars No need to look any further.......2005-12-03

This is one of only two complete recordings of Telemann's Paris Quartets available as a single set, and is much superior to the old Bruggen set. The Kuijkens are all very stylish and engaging performers, and they play these works very well.

Telemann wrote a lot of very good chamber music, but these quartets show him at his best. They are full of wonderful melodies, and some amazing rhythmic quirks. If Telemann had not been so prolific, these works would be considered absolute masterpieces on the order of the Brandenburg Concertos of Bach. They are that good.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful recording of Telemann's Quartets........2001-07-13

This is by far the best recording of these Quartets. The Kujiken brothers are skilled players of their instruments -- a great achievement for self-taught musicians. Their version of these works of Telemann is fulfilled with virtuosity and panache, doing justice for the technically demanding scores. But there's more than just technique. You will find here real music. Don't miss this album!

4 out of 5 stars Spirited baroque chamber music.......2000-07-13

This is a surprisingly wonderful collection. My only complaint might be that there's TOO MUCH of it, if that's possible. Not knowing much about Telemann, and expecting little from the venerable Kuijkens and Mr. Leonhardt, I found instead some very well considered, beautiful performances of immediately accesible and enjoyable baroque compositions. The recording is deep and lush and the playing is spot-on precise as well as emotive. These performers have aged well and this collection is the proof.

Liszt's tone poems are "respected" more than loved. It's kind of easy to see why--the thematic material is not always distinguished, and the orchestration--however interesting and experimental--is often just plain screechy. But maybe that's part of the point. As the inventor of the "symphonic poem," Liszt was trying to create a piece of symphonic length and continuity based on the transformation of just one or two themes. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, but the results are seldom dull. Bernard Haitink's performances are very musical, and they are attractively recorded. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars la colleccion mas espectacular II.......2004-11-30

5 out of 5 stars Rounding up from a 4.5.......2004-09-07

All recordings of Liszt's symphonic poems should be compared to the fabulous set by Kurt Masur and the Leipzig Gewandhash Orchestra. They are near perfection in their spontaneity and authenticity. These are good recordings - even great - although it would be hard not to perform such notables as Hungaria, the Mephisto Waltz and Hunnenschlacht.

As I stated in my review of the first set, these are difficult to understand completely because of the general literary and cultural illiteracy that plagues America, particularly the youth. All the poems have a literary inspiration - Hamlet, Orpheus, Faust, the "Hero" of German Literature. Listening to these without knowing the story or person behind it is like eating wonderful without knowing what it is.

5 out of 5 stars "More 'respected' than loved"? Here's to respect!!.......2003-01-22

OK Mr. Hurwitz, if only because Liszt created the art-form of symphonic poems as they went on to existance we should just "respect" the tone poems, but Hunnenschlact--How could you not LOVE this piece?? This was most certainly the blueprint for Saint-Saens' absolutely killer Symphony #3 (which was written as a tribute to Liszt, actually) with its pairing of organ and symphony orchestra. With that and the other 12 poems, there's plenty of love and respect to go around!

5 out of 5 stars Part Two of a great Liszt Tone Poem cycle from Haitink.......2002-12-08

Franz Liszt invented the symphonic tone poem genre and this splendid two CD compilation is the second half in a series of recordings of Liszt's scores from Bernard Haitink and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. These are warm, technically brilliant, but also passionate, performances replete with great performances from the strings, winds and horns when the London Philharmonic was London's best symphony orchestra. Haitink leads the LPO in excellent interpretations, with my favorites being the "Battle of the Huns" and Mephisto Waltz Number One. Philips' sound quality is superb due to state-of-the-art 24 bit digital image remastering. Here's hoping that the first volume in this series will be available to classical music fans soon.
