On their own, bassists Ray Brown, John Clayton, and Christian McBride are three of the most talented musicians in jazz today. But, performing together as Superbass, the trio becomes a sublime ensemble, capable of inventive, virtuosic playing with no accompaniment needed or wanted from horns or percussion. Recorded live at the Blue Note club in New York over the course of a couple of sets in December 2000, this disc joyously defies logic--who knew that the upright bass was capable of singing solos from Porgy and Bess?--and standard musical conventions. Together, these guys produce a tender take "My Funny Valentine," an upbeat version of "Get Happy," and a funky Latin jazz number ("Taco with a Pork Chop") that would do Willie Bobo proud. All the while, the threesome is having a great time and taking plenty of solo turns. Being a long time listener of Ray Brown (and admiring Christian McBride) I thought this CD would be interesting.

Interesting is an understatement.

This CD is pure, unadulterated FUN! Oh sure, these 3 guys are virtuousos of the first degree, but how many times have you heard people this talented just enjoying themselves in, essentially, their work!

For those who only remember Ray Brown as the bass player for the Merv Griffin house band, brace yourself. Arguably one of the 4 greatest bassists in the long history of Jazz, he is nothing short of booming here. McBride is wicked! He clearly is enjoying himself in the presence of one of his heroes. I had not heard John Clayton before but, after buying this CD, I had to get anything relating to Superbass to hear more.

To me this CD is like hugging someone you love. It never loses its appeal.

Wicked Awesome Fun.......2002-05-17

If you are a lover of the double bass, jazz or othewise, there are not many CDs you will find that are more fun than this one. It must have been a hoot to be in the audience at these shows - they invite audience participation and the audience is only too happy to oblige.

Tracks such as Get Happy, Papa Was a Rolling Stone, and Taco and a Pork Chop are more fun than bass players should be allowed to have. Summertime, My Funny Valentine, and I Loves You, Porgy show that these guys are no musical lightweights. Beautiful playing throughout. Arrangements are very good.

Turn on your subwoofer, crank up the volume, sit back, and get ready to annoy the neighbors. You will find yourself coming back to this disc over and over again.

For those who think that jazz is boring, they are so, so wrong! Brown, McBride & Clayton make their big old instruments sound like a big band. Check out their happening, bass-slapping piece "Papa was a Rolling Stone" (Oh Wow! How could this be jazz! Woohoo!), and "Mysterioso" where the 3 stars make a beautiful classical sound out of it. Those who have heard Thelonius Monk & Sonny Rollins in "Mysterioso" will know what I mean! This 'live' recording makes the humble instrument come loud & alive. Woohoo! It's definitely an album worth investing in!

Classic - Hold the Chills.......2006-06-25

This is a fine collection of mostly classical themes.
Some of them have nice creepy moments, but on the whole, it's just some solid music. Not something to buy if you want really "spooky" music, but worthwhile for some interesting listening.

This is an awesome album. It starts off with thunder crashing, running footsteps, a gate creaking, the wind howling, a cat screeching, a door opening, a woman crying that she needs help....and then SCREAMING! And then straight into track 2, the overture to 'The Phantom of the Opera'. Wow! The rest of the cd also features 'creepy' music from various sources, such as Alfred Hitchcock films, like Psycho, various classic works like Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Night on Bald Mountain', and also some other creepy sound effects. A good album not only for Halloween but I dare you to listen to it during a dark night with a thunderstorm raging outside.

A real work-out for your system.............1999-12-11

I've owned the "Chiller" CD since it's release in '89. At the time, I was working for a local Audio/Video/Music dealer, and was looking for 'demo' CD's containing not necessarily heavy bass, but ones displaying incredible dynamic range, and sharp transient peaks. I already owned a copy of "Time Warp", also on Telarc, and was intrigued when I read about "Chiller. Needless to say, I was extremely pleased with this disc. Not only did I get a disc containing some great treatments of classics, but the re-make of the "Psycho" suite is wonderful (the shower sequence is very faithful to the original)! A word of warning.....the dynamic range of this disc is not to be underestimated.....I drove an older amplifier into thermal shutdown VERY quickly with track #1. I haven't tried it since I've upgraded my home system....hmmm....might have to scare the neighbors tonight (or at least rattle a few dental fillings)!

This CD contains tons of great classic Halloween tunes. Even though the names might sound unfamiliar, you probably know most of the music on here through cultural osmosis. Heck, it's worth it just for "Funeral March of a Marionette" (the Alfred Hitchcock show theme.)

One of the best JAZZ cds I own...And I own alot. .......2007-06-25

The bass is usually not a lead instrument, usually it is in the back with the dishawashers. But here, you will find this is exactly why this performance is simply astounding. It is one of the best jazz performances I own, and it for someone new to Jazz this would be a great way to get a flavor for Jazz as an art. Ray Brown is king no doubt, John Clayton is a force to be reckoned as Ray's protege.

This is a must have, for beginner to jazz expert.

I love the bass, the instrument and the sound itself. And I'm a fan of all three bassists here, though particularly Ray Brown. I grabbed this CD the second I heard of it. I left it unlistened to for a while, enjoying the anticipation. It pains me to say this, but when I actually listened to it, I just wasn't crazy about it. Guess what the problem was. Right, too much bass. Three bass players and nothing on top, it just doesn't work that well. It works better as a concept and a conversation piece than as something I actually want to listen to. I like having it in my collection, but I've never felt the desire to listen to it a second time. After ten or fifteen minutes of listening to three bass virtuosos solo, I would have killed to hear just about anyone on a sax cut in with a high register screech, clear out some of those hollow overtones. Oh well.

It's not terrible. I did like Blue Monk and Brown Funk the best, enjoyed Mack The Knife too. Maybe for a bass player it would be a more interesting experiment. It just didn't quite work for me. I recommend Ray Brown's "Live from New York to Tokyo," a great live double album featuring two different versions of his trio from two different eras, and some of the installments of "Some Of My Best Friends Are..." series are great as well. Also check out "Live at the Blue Note," with Oscar Peterson and Milt Jackson. You see? You put the bass on the bottom end to compliment some great musicians in the upper registers.

Great For Bassists.......2003-04-02

While I adore this CD, and think that all bassists should listen to it at least once, it's decidedly not the CD for the rest of the jazz world -- it's all bass. But it's very good, and very acoustic. And if you like bass, you will love it. :)

This album is an amazing collection of coolness. If your like it as much as I do, you'll love Christian McBrides cover of "Deck the Halls" (appears on the album as "Double Decker") It's the best cover of a Christmas Classic that I've heard in years. It's on the album "Jazz for Joy: A Verve Christmas", check it out you won't be sorry.

I first heard this while in the throes of a magic mushroom sponsored evening!!! It sounded fantastic.
The next day when it was played it still sounded fantastic. It is a rollercoaster of gripping basslines and clever melodies. I dont really go for jungle music but this is a must even just to play it in the wee hours.
It has style, grace and class.
Buy it go on i dare you.

In the Brandenburg Concerti, the tempo varies, trumpet volleys sound like French Horns, and the flute is off tune half the time. The harpsichordist was good but in one of the concerti, decided to enter at a different tempo than had been set by the rest of the orchestra. Since he had to play some very fast runs later, it is no surprise that he wanted to slow down the orchestra, but maybe they should have worked it out earlier. The orchestra sounds leaderless and out of sync at times. Can't find the groove. Violins are competent but playing with an orchestra that needs to practise what they are going to play a little more.

That covers the first 2 of 40 CDs. Don't know if I can bring myself to listen to the rest. Somebody who didn't know Bach would wonder what the attraction is after listening to this.

A real pleasure.......2002-09-02

OK, so seventeenth century German music is really my thing, and I know this isn't a universal sentiment, but this recording should appeal to the novice and afficianado alike. There are a few familiar pieces by Weckmann, Schmelzer, and Schutz, but a lot of others I am encountering for the first time including the inventive "Da mihi, Domine" and "An Wasserflussen Babylon" by Franz Tunder and an utterly charming setting by Buxtehude of "Liebbster, meine Seele saget" for two sopranos. Erin Headley has assembled a fine group of performers, known collectively as Tirami Su - an odd but appetizing name for an early music ensemble. The vocal soloists may not be the last word in tonal beauty, but they more than make up for it with accurate, musical, and intelligent performances. All in all, a great pleasure. I hope to hear more from this group.
