Easy Mo Bee has carved out a strange niche in the knob-twiddling world of hip-hop, thanks in part to his musical trysts with two DGs (dead geniuses). Mo Bee was the last producer to work with jazz luminary Miles Davis on the middling 1993 hip-hop jazz-fusion album, Doo Bop. He also crafted the hottest tunes ("Machine Gun Funk," "The What") on one of the best albums in the history of rap, the Notorious B.I.G.'s Ready to Die. On his 24-track Now Or Never: Odyssey 2000 compilation, one realizes that producer-centered LPs can be both a blessing and a curse. Mo Bee's weak, self-indulgent rap interludes blemish the album, but hearing rap's most talented MCs freak his multilayered gems is worth a little suffering. "Let's Make a Toast" is one of the best crew collabos around, teaming American Cream Team with the Flipmode Squad , while Gang Starr's introspective antigun tune "Soul" is sweet. The diversity of sounds in Mo Bee's repertoire is what makes this album a must-have: he perfectly tailors his beats to fit everything from Goodie Mob's conscious vibes to Rah Digga's frantic flows. --Dalton HigginsCustomer Reviews:
Beatmaker Easy Mo Bee.......2001-09-09
Some of the highlights of the album are in the musical interludes Easy displays between different tracks. The interludes are cool and reveal his old school heritage. Also, a number of tracks are straight up hip hop flavor. The intro "Now or Never" is the perfect beginning of an album, sampling Billie Holiday and making you want more. Another top notch pick is "Fie Fie Delish", featuring Goodie Mobb. Goodie spits flames over fast, hideous beats making you feel the adrenaline rush. Snoop Dog appears on another stand out track, "Sound of my Heat", created in a seventies-like, mystic way.
However, Odyseey 2000 lacks stability. Really good music and great lyrics are often followed by mediocre or even wack songs. Rah Digga's "Talkin' bout You" is totally out of place. This track, among a few others, lacks lyrical skills and catchy grooves and choruses. Nonetheless, Odyssey 2000 captures me. Even when Mo Bee raps a few verses, it is kind of funny but not bad. Like Pete Rock, Easy Mo Bee is at his best when it comes to making beats.
The album has a number of skits, too. I do not understand why most people are negative about skits, because they can bring comical notes on a record. Here, the skits do just that.
Now or Never: Odyssey 2000 is a good album. If you look for new beats and musical ideas, this is a good one. If you want an all out stable and perfect buy, you need to look elsewhere. Old school hip hop fans will love this.
