Underappreciated multiplatinum seller Erick Sermon's star is falling fast. Along with Redman and the perpetually incarcerated Keith Murray, Sermon makes up the Def Squad. This 17-cut follow-up to 1998's El Niño, has Sermon, er, Onasis (named after the late Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis) recruiting more than a dozen mediocre MCs to join in the fun alongside the Squad's core members. There are a few gems--posse cut "Focus," where Sermon slurs alongside Xzibit and DJ Quik, and "Hostile," where Redman "rocks the spot more than 1001 Dalmatians." But tracks like "Can't Stop," and "Get Da Money," featuring Ja Rule, revolve around moola and ladies and not much else. Please pass my thanks on to Erick Onasis for producing the best album I have bought this year! (So Far)

Although it isn't as good as the last Def Squad album in terms of lyrics (which was OUTSTANDING), it is still as funky as you would expect from E, and Redman makes a guest appearance on the 5th and 6th tracks where he RIPS it down - as expected. All the tracks have got that repetitive funk you would associate with Sermon, and are a pleasant break from the norm (i.e. Swizz Beats, Dr. Dre etc). AND Quite a few of the tracks have got massive Whip appeal too (e.g 2, 3, 8, 9, 14).

Sermon's (Onasis') lyrical contribution to the album can't be overlooked either. With top notch production and collaborations from DJ Scratch and T-Mixx to the late Eazy E (RIP) the musical stage is perfectly set for E to bring his ever-improving MCing skills further to maturity and the next level.

The posse cut "Vangundy" is probably the weakest point of the album, but even that is an average song. I would definitely recommend this CD for E fans or EPMD fans.

....Oh Yeah!...and don't forget that classic with Too Short - "Fat Gold Chain".

- The songs on this album are truly a perfect environment of funk to surround such a classic joint!

Erick Onassis Presents Hot New Artists.......2000-10-21

This underrated classic is a must buy for real hip hop heads. Not only are Erick's outstanding production skills evident, reminding us all why EPMD was so banging, but he does collabos with some of the best in the industry. Unfortunately, due to limited airplay on the radio stations and mediocre promotion, not everyone was aware of what they were missing out on. Erick presents some notable new artists, the best of which is Sy Scott. Sy, representing Philly, PA displays his versatility and unique style of spittin' on tracks such as "Vangundy" and "Feel Me Baby", two of the tightest tracks on the album. His other new artist Khari is featured on "Feel Me Baby" as well. This is a CD you must have in your collection. The tracks are ones that you won't tire of hearing easily and all have that trademark E sound, but aren't repetitive. Plus, these MC's manage to entertain you without excessive cussing and dissing of females. They don't constantly brag about 'ice' and 'platinum' like everybody else, so it's a welcome change from the usual.

Erick Sermon, flows in his own unique way. Every beat on this C.D makes you want to start bobbing your head. I liked this CD better then El Nino. If you like this one, get His E.P.M.D Lp's. Peace
