Rock, Roll with a handful Soul!.......2004-04-16
Mac successfully attempts to exemplify all that is the modern radio rock sound. Singing and playing with a conviction and a sincerity that will melt the heart of even the most stoic of listeners, producing rousing, well-crafted rock songs intertwined with heart pounding love ballads.
The Bump Band show off their range of skills from the soft, heart-warming 'nod and a wink' to Ronnie Lane on Wishing, Hoping, Dreaming to the heavier Jerry Lee Lewis induced keyboard driven Your Secret and the mix of fulfilling lyrics and strong music on Lying and Date With An Angel.
The mixing is tremendous and the album flows perfectly with that right mix of heavy and soft, making it easy listening from start to finish taking you through different moods, different sounds, but always powerful music from the band. It all goes rushing toward the fantastic 'drunk rock' anthem The Wrong Direction, a sure fire hit for the Faces had Mac written it in the early 70's.
You're My Girl is a blistering start, all chugging guitars from native Texan 'Scrappy' Jud Newcomb and ex-Californian Gurf Morlix with Mac's Hammond lending support, before moving into more melodic territory for the next few songs, including the highly infectious Been A Long Time. The album's highlight,......the superb acoustic 5 minute ballad Anytime follows next - Mac's 'song for Kim' featuring the vocal talents of Patty Griffin and the wonderful cello playing from Brian Standefer...then onto the Price Of Love (featuring the Texacali Horns, Joe Sublett and Darrell Leonard) a sad and sorry tale of missing a loved one, reliving that naked, human three-in-the-morning feeling when the empty bottle starts talking back at you and the difference between love and lone is no difference at all.
She Ain't My Girl and Rubies In Her Hair showcase the Bumps 'rhythm section'...Don Harvey on drums and George Reiff, bass - backed up by guest John Bush, congas (on the former)- both are love songs, incredibly catchy up-tempo tunes with quite an edgy sound to them.
Rise & Shine! - A perfect blend of superb material and passionate delivery make this a classic album. This is my favourite Mac album, followed very closely by Best Of British...primarily for it's overriding sense of homely charm and rustic calm, on which time does not so much 'pass slowly' as require an immediate re-listen! To refer to it as 'varied' is a bit of an understatement, being a host of tunes to sit back and listen to in all moods and seasons, swinging from an infectious joyous bounce to a wrapped up warm frosty calm.
The artwork is stitched together beautifully, from the 'alarm clock' sleeve portrait to the 'English Breakfast' (made in Austin, USA by Kim McLagan) before and after shots on the disc and inner sleeve.
This superb collection of blues, rock and soul is the The Bump Bands' finest hour as well as being their most diverse album to date.

Their best album!!!!.......2003-07-09
Bump Ahead has more depth and sincerity in the music, the singing, the playing and they finally let Billy Sheehan off his leash! Great album. I consider this to be their best effort. I wish the original lineup was still together making music because these guys were special. Ritchie Kotzen is a talented guitar player, but there just something between Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan that just fit perfectly.
Underrated--album and band.......2002-05-12
This band is not just a ballad band. Take the opening track on the album, the hard-rocking "Colorado Bulldog". Catchy, with a prominent bass line done by the great Billy Sheehan, this song kicks. Nearly as impressive is the next track--the uptempo, melodic "Price You Gotta Pay". The third track is the first ballad--the lovely "Promise Her The Moon", but that is followed by another mid-tempo rocker, the attitude-laced "What's It Gonna Be".
Next comes a cover that on the surface doesn't seem to fit but is actually very nicely done--"Wild World". The emotional way in which Eric Martin delivers it here brings a nice new twist to an old song. This was also the only top 40 charter on this album. Following is a mid-tempo but also melodic track--"Mr. Gone", which is followed by another true rocker in "The Whole World's Gonna Know".
Out of the final four tracks, two of them are ballads. "Nothing But Love" is pretty good, but "Ain't Seen Love Like That", which I remember getting a little radio airplay, is a bit better. The former is the track that gives me my one slight criticism of this album: the "one too many ballads syndrome". Both are still quality songs, though, and they are broken up by the catchy "Tempermental". The last track is another rocker of sorts, "Mr. Big". Further proof that these guys excel on more than ballads.
No one was giving these guys the time of day back when this album came out, as the Pearl Jams and Nirvanas of the world overshadowed all else. Nonetheless, this is a strongly-recommended listen for melodic rock fans and fans of '80s rock. Brief popularity aside, this band is far better than average musically--something that this album demonstrates.
Mr. Biggest?.......2000-12-09
Where Lean Into It perfected the sound the band started on their first album, Bump Ahead shows more progression. The sounds are beefier and fatter, with Billy Sheehan's bass playing taking more of a dominant role -- no bad thing when we are talking about the greatest rock bassist on the scene. The whole thing's heavier than "Lean Into It", and where that album seemed dominated by commercial AOR numbers, this one has its fair share of rockers. The ballads, and I love ballads, are of the usual high standard, and this is everything we've come to expect of Mr. Big -- non-stop quality. What else do you expect from such a flawless collection of musicians? They don't come much better than the afore-mentioned Sheehan and Paul Gilbert.
It's nice when a band isn't afraid to move forward. It's nice, too, when that forward motion leaves the fans pleased. Success for Mr. Big! Standout tracks... well, Colorado Bulldog, Mr. Gone, The Whole Word's Gonna Know, and Nothing But Love spring to mind, but I have to recommend this whole CD to you unreservedly.
So... just one question remains: Is it better than "Lean Into It"? Hmmm... I don't know... probably on a par. Different, but the better for it.
Another Terribly Underrated Band.......2000-07-10
As for 'Bump Ahead', it has everything. As another reviewer said, there is simply no one word to describe it. It's musical diversity really shows off the vast musical talent of the band and the wide vocal range of Eric Martin. It's kind of upsetting though, that this band never really got the respect they deserved. But now that some of the real bands from rock's golden era, the 1980's, have come back onto the scene with new albums (Poison, Motley Crue, Slaughter, etc.), maybe that injustice will finally be rectified.
Staying big..........2000-04-18

A solid blues album.......2003-05-02
On this album, he is working with the Bernie Pearl Blues Band, an excellent ensemble even if Papa John were not working with them.
Papa John can do with a violin what Izhak Perlman can't.
The CD is on the Bee Bump Records label - not exactly mainstream but it should be.
The best cut is the "Bumble Bee Blues" but the entire album is one you will want to have - DEMAND to have - if you enjoy the blues.

For some of guitarist John Scofield's fans, his best albums date come from the 1980s: Electric Outlet and Still Warm. Recorded before his fusion ascendancy with drummer Dennis Chambers and bassist Gary Grainger, these albums are primal and funky, yet also allude to the eerie tonal palettes of Scofield's onetime employer Miles Davis during the trumpeter's 1970s electric period. On Bump, Sco's world is weird again. Joined by members of esoteric underground Manhattan bands such as Sex Mob, Soul Coughing, and Deep Banana Blackout, Sco gets down and dirty, playing some terrifically raunchy guitar. Funky New Orleans rhythms fill "Beep Beep" and the Meters-ish "Kelpers." Grits and gravy get slathered on "Three Sisters," and ethereal tone tableaus impregnate "Fez" and the acoustic "Kilgeffen." Soul Godfather James Brown is also given his rightful due on the scalding groove number "Drop and Roll." Though his guitar style is now as recognizable as any current voice in jazz, John Scofield continues to challenge and redefine himself. --Ken MicallefCustomer Reviews:

Unauthorized CD - Buyer Beware!.......2006-07-30
From 1965 to 1969 McLagan played keyboards in Small Faces, who never quite caught on here in the States aside from a single smash hit ("Itchycoo Park"), perhaps because the band never made a single trip across the Atlantic. They did produce a vital body of work, were indeed stars all over Europe and elsewhere, and have influenced groups ranging from Oasis to Black Crowes (not to mention Led Zeppelin, but that's another story). Quintessential Mods, SF started off playing wildly intense r&b/proto-punk, with guitarist Steve Marriott and bassist Ronnie Lane developing into a first rate songwriting team as the band itself worked closely with Eddie Kramer and George Chkiantz (Hendrix, Stones) so that by the time they left Decca for Immediate Records (1967) the early anarchic energy had been harnessed, crafting exquisite hit singles (well, they were big hits across Europe) as well as classic albums that rate with the best of what their peers were issuing. By early '69 Marriott was ready to move on, though not up, to Humble Pie, and the three remaining members (Lane, McLagan, and drummer Kenny Jones) enlisted Ron Wood, by then fed up with life in a constantly volatile Jeff Beck Group. Wood in turn recommended his friend, Beck Group vocalist Rod Stewart, and after dropping "Small", Faces did indeed invade America, becoming one of the best loved bands of their time (1969 - 1975), scoring hits and producing a wealth of passionate and timeless rock 'n' roll until December 1975, when Wood moved on to the Rolling Stones and Stewart, whose solo records for Mercury (made with Faces involvement) are his absolute best ever, turning him into a solo superstar in competetion with his own band until he decided what he really needed were American session pros and so moved to L.A. Jones found himself not quite fitting into the final phase of The Who as an active recording band, following Keith Moon's death. For a band that was sometimes billed as "Rod Stewart/Faces", driving Lane to quit in mid-1973, the records hold up remarkably well, and demonstrate an ironic and rare example of songwriting 'democracy' (well, as close as any band gets) actually leading to great music. Get the box set, "Five Guys Walk Into A Bar..."
McLagan spent 1977 - 82 playing keyboards with The Rolling Stones, during their umpteenth 'Some Girls' era rebirth, and married the ex Mrs Keith Moon. In 1979, with the Stones in between tours, McLagan - who has quite a few songwriting credits in both Small Faces and Faces, found himself in The New Barbarians, an ad-hoc all-star band that included Wood, Keith Richards, Meters drummer Joseph Modeliste, jazz bassist Stanley Clarke, and Stone-in-law sax player Bobby Keys. This was the period during which he recorded the very likeable solo debut "Troublemaker," along with friends from Jim Keltner to Ringo Starr. The set is upbeat Faces/Stones rock 'n'roll, a marvelous album even if it lacks a major song or two that would put it in the company of those bands' best work. But it remains fresh to this day, loose-limbed rock 'n' roll with touches of soul (hear his take on Wood's ballad "Mystifies Me"), memorable riffs, most of the songs around the three minute mark, packed with energy and lacking any whiff of pretentiousness. The most striking aspect of this set is the presence of the one and only New Barbarians studio recording, a six minute reggae groove that drips with succulunt funk, "Truly."
In 1981, about to embark on yet another Stones tour, McLagan issued his second and final Mercury album, "Bump In The Night," easily the equal of its predecessor and with the first Bump Band (including guitarist Johnny Lee Schell, ex Beach Boy Ricky Fataar, and Roy Ohara), plus tracks like the opening hard rocker "Little Girl" written with Wood who handles duelling guitars plus bass, plus Bobby Keys on the funky "Boy's Gonna Get It."
Ian McLagan has continued to perform live and make fine albums (including the new tribute to Ronnie Lane, "Spiritual Boy,") but this twofer is unauthorized and has not been remastered. For the real deal go to the artist's website where you'll find both of these titles in vastly superior editions. "Here Comes Trouble" features the debut in sparkling warm sound from the original master tapes, now expanded with a 12-minute version of that New Barbarians track as a bonus, plus the 1985 EP "Last Chance To Dance," and a great cover version of "Pictures Of Lily" (featuring Wood) from a 1994 Who tribute set, and more. "Bump In The Night" is likewise sonically vastly superior to the drab transfer under discussion, and features graphics and artwork originally left off the LP by Mercury back in '81. Again both sets leave this tepid and dishonest set in the dust, and both have what Mac brings to every project he touches, be it the Faces box or his wonderful memoir or his gigs: class, heart, and humor. And if you ask him, he'll autograph the CDs (or book, or Faces box) just for you.
Buried treasures from Faces key-slinger..........2006-04-18
He's also a very charasmatic songwriter. He dashes off some genuinely funny lines, but they never sound like jokes. Opener "La-Di-La" is jammed with them..."I got a new girl yesterday / She ain't good-looking so I know she's gonna stay." The first album had the small hit single "Troublemaker," but the second may be the stronger, as it has a tougher, more guitar-based sound and slightly catchier songs. "If It's Loving You Want" is the kind of song you put on a mix CD and have your friends call you asking what they heck it was...
A few words about this reissue. Sound is still cavernous and a little muddy, like the original vinyl. Ian has remastered editions of these albums available seperately on his website. I have ordered one of them, and will compare them. Maybe his editions will sound better. "Troublemaker" even comes with seven bonus cuts not heard here. The essay in this package is useless -- just a brief summary of Ian's career with no insight into these special little albums.
Still, buy it...or go to Ian's website and buy his editions...these projects deserved to not only be remembered, but to be listened to and listened to often.
