Public Enemy had one of the more distinct and unique sounds of any major rap group from the late 80s/early 90s, both as to the music and Chuck D's raps. They were big into social and political commentary with Chuck D blasting away at injustice and other BS over often disonant and clangy music, which actually served well to mirror and underlie the chaotic situations described in the lyrics. Flavor Flave played well off of Chuck with his interjections, which added "flavor" to a number of tunes. Some reviewers dissed this a bit because it didn't have a certain particular tune that is their favorite and they just can't imagine it not being on a compilation. O.K., if you're that hardcore, buy all the individual albums. This CD is just a great overview of a rap group with one of the more unique urban sounds and insistent messages. This is what got me into Public Enemy!.......2006-08-01

Without a doubt, hip-hop was in its prime during the late 80's and early 90's. Unfortunatly, I didn't even exist untill '91...I was born into the generation of cookie-cutter "gangsta" (c)rap like 50 cent and lil john...oh, how lucky am I...

Anyway, I had heard a few samples from p.e. on tv and the internet, and decided to look for one of their cds. They sounded so different than anything I've heard before. Chuck D's vocal energy and style grabs your attention right away, while Flava's crazy wierdness keeps you hooked. While looking through Wallmart's cd selection, I came across this cd and decided that a greatest hits cd would be a perfect introduction to a group I had never really listened to before.(It was only 10 bucks, so what harm could it be?) Lemme tell ya, after listening through the cd once, my jaw was dropped, and I was floored.

First off, for any fans of pop-rap with candy-coated beats, this cd is NOT for you. Public Enemy are raw, hard, and abrasive. They're definatly not for everyone.

Second, their lyrics are political, and confront many serious issues that were being ignored during that time. Pay close attention, and you'll see that they actually have something important to say and aren't just grunting about their cars, money, hoes, bling-bling, whatever.

Finally, while their music may sound somewhat cacaphony at times, they were definatly way ahead of their time. They have the rare ability to make seemingly clashing noises work together in an intriguing and almost harmoneous way. For example, "Rebel Without A Pause" uses a repetitive screeching tea kettle in the background, which would be ear-drum-breaking in any other circumstance. However, combined with the song's heavy bass and Chuck D's lyrical wit, the kettle becomes less of a nussance and more of an actual instrument that enhances the song's quality. (Yeah, that sounds really stupid, but I don't have any other way of describing it.)

So yeah, that's another one of my rambling reviews. I would recomend this cd to hip-hop fans who are open-minded and ready for beats that are rough and different from anything else. I've become a huge fan of p.e. because of this cd, and I plan to buy more of their work. That's all for now. PEACE

PE Keep Bringin That Noise! [and sonnin' Viper].......2006-07-06

What else can be said about this release? The entire collection of singles (from their Def Jam period) from the most important and influential group ever. It doesnt get much better than this.

Public Enemy albums are consistent affairs with segues, inserts and instrumentals acting as the musical glue for each release. Some have therefore argued that listening to the singles in isolation is a less cohesive affair. I disagree. While Chuck D maintains that the group has never been singles orientated, their discography begs to differ: throughout the early 1990's, Public Enemy single releases were massive affairs accompanied by groundbreaking videos and fantastic cover art. Remember that "Fight the Power" only appeared on "Fear of a Black Planet" some several months after it "hit" - as did the B side release of "Rebel without A Pause" prior to "It Takes a Nation of Millions...".

This collection of singles reinforces their creative output, musicianship and legacy. The groups most commerciably accessible offerings are all here in their high-rotation-strong-unit-sales glory: the aforementioned "Fight The Power", "Hazy Shade of Criminal", "Shut Em Down", "911 Is A Joke" and the hugely popular "Give It Up", arguably the groups most successful single in terms of retail sales.

PE have crammed 18 cuts on to this release - but this just barely represents their release schedule. There are several cuts that have been released as singles and/or videos that are ommitted, including "Livin In A Zoo" (from the CB4 soundtrack), "Get off My Back", "Shake Your Booty", "I Stand Accused", "Louder Than A Bomb (Remix)", "Anti N*gga Machine/Burn Hollywood Burn" and the love-it-or-hate-it Anthrax thrash version of "Bring Tha Noize". A double disc edition with say, 28 tracks would have been nice - but then again, Def Jam/Universal dont want to cannibalise any trailing album sales the groups catalogue may still command!

Oh yeah, the reviewer "Viper" is the embodiment of the typical ignorant white American youth that PE originally set out to educate! Its unfortunate, but he of his ilk will never understand what true hip hop is or represents. "Hip hop" to Viper and most other Generation Y'ers constists of gun toting and talking about how much money you have and how many "biyatchs" youre doing. Grafitti? Breaking? DJ'ing? Beatboxing? Get outa here - that stuff's ancient, right Viper? Cats like Juvenile and Fitty Cent are the truth yeah!? heheheheh!!!!

Not all is lost though - I know plenty of young cats who take the time to check their history and educate themselves. Its just that people like Viper are already a lost cause - this album is the antithesis to his played out, thugged out BS so it will never get heard. But thats okay, cos dudes like me will never check for G Unit or Juvenile - so like PE's ratio of message:music, in the end there is some balance...

Kids, put away your Paul Wall and Nelly albums...this is some REAL rap music.......2006-04-12

Def Jam finally did what was right and released a complete Public Enemy greatest hits compilation. All of the PE classics are here including "Fight The Power", "Welcome To the Terrordome", "Bring The Noise", and "Can't Trust It". If you are not familiar with PE, this compilation is a great opportunity for you to become acquainted with one of the greatest rap groups of all time.

Solid.......2007-01-22

This was an album that I've been wanting since I heard about it a year ago and I finally got it as a Christmas gift. It was worth the wait.
This has five original songs, only one of which really deviates from the Poison tradition and that song is Powere to the People.Yes the title track of this album is a different direction for the band but good regardless.The other four will be recognizable instantly to the Poison Fan's ear.
The real stand out of the record is I Hate Every Bone In Your Body But Mine sung by the one and only C.C. DeVille.The infamous guitarist flexes his singing skills on the song and actually sounds very good.
The majority of the album however is live.There is nothing wrong with that though some believe it should've been left to the band's Swallow This Live album but I own that CD aswell and prefer Power to the People because it seems a more energetic recording probably due to the fact that the band had just reunited.
Overall this is a solid peice of work.

Great new tracks.......2006-04-03

Great new songs, the only reason i didnt give it 5 stars is because this cd should have been a complete new studio album.
The live hits have been done on 'Swallow this' and once is enough in my opinion. Looking back now they should have made 'Swallow this' a live hits only album and saved the new tracks from that album for this one. They also could have added some b-sides and you would have a great album.

Kinda pointless & weird.......2006-01-31

The first five songs are new studio tracks, the rest being live stuff. This seems kinda pointless because the live material isn't the greatest ('Swallow This Live' is much better) and the studio tracks would have been better if it was a full lenth album insteaf this weird live/studio combo.

'Power To The People', is a decent song, certainly one of the heaviest Poison has ever done. Not bad 'Can't Bring Me Down' is simply GREAT, and the BEST part of this album. The lyrics of this song remind me of some of the one's on the 'Crack A Smile' album. 'The Last Song' is another typical power ballad. 'Nuff said about that one. 'Strange' is a good accoustic radio friendly tune. 'I Hate Every Bone In Your Body' is a little on the heavier side, and features C.C. Deville on vocals. But unfortunatly, since C.C. is a dumb-ass, this song just plain sucks.

The live chunk of the record is nothing to sneeze at. It wasn't very well recorded or produced, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't touched up much in the studio (if at all), and since it doesn't feature any new songs or surprises, its a total snore. There are some good explosions which help give you the 'Poison experience', but that doesn't help the music at all.

Had this been a full length studio record, I'm willing to bet it woulda been worth picking up. But alas, this release, really isn't, unless you are a diehard completest who must have everything.

Poison still rocks !.......2005-12-07

The latest cd from Poison was a great effort. All the studio tracks rock ! Alot of the reviewers are like most and want the new stuff to sound like Open Up And Say Ahh or another earlier release. People hate to see change in a band but I DO like to see change. As a huge Poison fan I think this cd is well worth the money ! The only disappointment of this cd is the live stuff.

After releasing Native Tounge or Crack A Smile (which are kick ass cds) I would have thought Poison had more to say and would have spared us from another live collection. I would have given it 5 stars if it had all been new studio stuff but the live stuff sounds terrible.

Better than "Swallow This Live".......2004-09-07

Power to the People marks the return of C.C. to Poison. There are five new studio songs on the album. Power to the people,Can't bring me Down, The Last song,Strange, and I hate every bone in your body but mine are all good, especially after hearing the "Native Tongue" album. The live portion of the album was recorded during their 1999 tour and released right before their 2000 tour which I attended one of the concerts. On the live part the sound quality is lacking a bit, but then again I guess that just proves it's 100% live instead of doctored up in the studio. The performances may not be the best that Poison is capable of, but it's fun to listen to the album and it's easy to get into. If you buy a live Poison album, I sugget this over "Swallow This Live"

Tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson (1937-2001) was the elliptical alternative to John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter when these sessions were recorded in 1969 on the Milestone label under Orrin Keepnews' production, with Miles Davis' sidemen: Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter on electric and acoustic piano and bass and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Their jazz-fusion sound is evident on the super-bopped "Afro-Centric" and the ostinato-anchored title track, which both featured the little-known trumpeter Mike Lawrence. The angular, radioactive blues "Isotope" and the lilting waltz "Black Narcissus," which debuted on this date, are two of the leader's compositional contributions to the jazz canon. The standard "Lazy Afternoon" and Ron Carter's darkly moody "Opus One-Point Five" are the only non-Henderson contributions. If You Liked In a Silent Way.......2007-04-09

Okay first of all forget the title. This is not a revolutionary free jazz diatrebe. What you get though (and nicely remastered with intelligent liner notes) is a classic fusion album along the vein of "In a Silent Way". This actually is closer to a Herbie Hancock album and has much of the same players as "The Prisoner", his album for that year which was rather uneven. However, "Power to the People" does not have those flaws. Nice ambient jazz work that still remains within a post bop tradition. Electric keyboards are used but piano also enters the mix. With Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Jack De Johnette, all Miles alumni you have a good thing going here and unlike much jazz fusion at the time or later on its not a bunch of flashy chops that is basically watered down rock trying to pass for jazz. Okay this is no "B-Brew" or "On the Corner" but as fusion it succeeds. Joe Henderson would later get into full blown fusion that was closer to jazz funk and then jump back to hard bop but "Power to the People" and the acoustic hard bop albums that preceeded it by Joe Henderson are part of the essential jazz roster.

Touches the Heart and Soul.......2003-09-23

I first heard Daniel sing when he performed at the Sunday service at the Agape Spiritual Center on 9/14/03. I was literally moved to tears as he sang "One Power" and "I Don't Need to Know". The combination of his voice, the melodies, and the lyrics enter straight into the heart. I picked up his "One Power" CD that day and have listened to it almost every day since then. His message is universal, but his musical talents and versatility are a rare treasure. From my point of view, each song is a true gem and a spiritual blessing. Thank you, Daniel, for sharing your gifts so beautifully.

I sat back with the lights dimmed and a cup of hot coffee and enjoyed the beautiful haunting music of years gone by. Memories abound.

5 stars for performance, 4 stars due to omissions.......2006-08-29

Why doesn't this get a perfect five stars?

Simple reason.

The producers at Silva, for wahtever reason, decided to cut down their SHE suites and Hands of the Ripper suites.

On the previous Hammer releases, "Draculas - Classic Horror Films", released in 1993, recorded in 1989, they had seven additional minutes of "Hands of the Ripper" that could have been included on this set.

Additionally, The Devil Rides Out: Film Music of James Bernard, released in 1997, recorded in 1995 and 1996 had about a minute more of additional music from SHE, PLUS about seven minutes worth of suites from Quatermass and X: The Unknown.

Both discs in this new re-issue round out at around 68 minutes, so there was room for some of these omissions.

Silva Screen gets big kudos for a reissuing these recordeings in the remastered HDCD format, but I don't understand these omissions. In fact, one of the tracks included, "Vampire Hunter" isn't even from a Hammer film, and its the only recording on this collection not on previous Silva CD's.

Again, 5 stars for the performances, the 1989 performances with Neil Richardson and the Philharmonia are fantastic. (Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hands of the Ripper, Vampire Circus.)

Additionally, The Westminster Philharmonic under the baton of Kenneth Alwyn do an excellent job as usual (Kiss of the Vampire, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, She, THe Abominable Snowman, Quatermass II and Curse of the Werewolf.) Finally, the City of Prague Philharmonic, who get a bad rap more often than they deserve round out hte album and IMHO, deliver the goods, under the trusty batons of Paul Bateman (Scars of Dracula, Frankenstein Created Woman, additionally, Bateman also plays the piano solo on Kiss of the Vampire.) and Nic Raine (The Devil Rides Out, One Million Years BC, When Dinosuars Ruled the Earth, Creatures The World Forgot, The Vampire Hunter)

I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.

blood doesn't flow as easily in "KISS OF THE VAMPIRE", the score from Bernard is
seductive, sensual to say the least for "creatures of the night", masked ball scene blends
atmospheric trance-masquerade themes, intoxicating main title is hauntingly mesmerizing with
"VAMPIRE RHAPSODY", just listen to the piano solo from our character in the film Carl
Ravna (Barry Warren), son of Dr. Ravna (Noel Willman) along with daughter Sabena Ravna
(Jacqueline Wallis), a cult of vampires in early 20th century Bavarian, praying on a young
honeymoon couple...Bernard's rhapsody captures the listeners heart and BLOOD!

Bernard)...difficult as it may be, there is a stand out ~ "THE CURSE OF THE
WEREWOLF", fine direction from Terence Fisher (director) with an outstanding cast Oliver
Reed (Leon-the Werewolf), Clifford Evans (Alfredo), Yvonne Romain (Servant Girl) and
Catherine Feller (Christina), Hammer's departure from the old stereotype of the beast is
refreshing, Reed's performance as the tormented sole, from man to wolf is touching, the score
by Ben Frankel is tense building at it's best, to say the least, setting the tone and mood for the
transformation with counterpoints is stimulating, inclusive orchestration development for what
lies ahead during a full moon.

Without a doubt the highlight pick hands down is "SHE", composer James Bernard gives of
himself without question, the SUITE takes the orchestra into lilting melodic exercises with
percussion chiming in, the harmonies are hypnotic blends of textured fabric, listen as The
Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Alwyn display stirring strings and
a solo harp run the scales in "THE ETERNAL FLAME AND THE DESTRUCTION OF
SHE", hold-fast arrangement has haunting echoes of Bernard's constant theme, with a final
beat from a drum in the percussion section.

Must make mention the cast of players that made this possible ~ The Philharmonia Orchestra,
The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra ~ and
their various conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Neil
Richardson...supported by the illustrious staff from Silva Screen Records LTD ~ Reynold da
Silva (executive producer), David Stoner (associate producer), Gareth Williams (Dolby
Surround/HDCD Mastering) and of course James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), who
has the knack of developing quality in every Silva Screen release...similar to "A History Of
Horror:From Nosferatu To The Sixth Sense" (SSD-1111/2CD Set), guaranteed to raise the
hair on the back of your neck!

"P.E. is in the house,top billin'". The song choice is superior,but not perfect (missing "Get The F*** Outta Dodge" and "Night Of The Living Baseheads"). Other than that,this CD is not all that edited (some songs already were released edited). They took "Fight The Power" from 'FEAR OF A BLACK PLANET' CD and that's edited (only the soundtrack to 'DO THE RIGHT THING' plays without the bleep). Yes,they shorten "Can't Do Nuthin' For You Man" to edit but "Welcome To The Terrordome" & "911 Is A Joke" wasn't. "Black Steel..." was edited (and shortened),"He Got Game" was edited. What's a few songs? Dawg,it's P.E. man. "Rebel...","Bring The Noise","Public Enemy #1". Cryin' because this is edited and overseeing the great gems combined into one piece? Brothers (and all P.E. fans),can we work this out? Fill in the blanks,dawgs!!!

I accidentally ordered this CD, thinking that it was remastered and the other version(not marked as ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED) wasn't. This is actually the EDITED VERSION. Amazon has not clearly identified each version as EXPLICIT or EDITED. I can only assume that the other version is the explicit one, but don't take my word for it. Buyer beware!

Solid, smooth soul.......2003-10-05

This CD is a strong classic soul offering from a consistently high-quality group. Outside of hearing "Have You Seen Her" on the radio and on several compilations, I wasn't too familiar with their sound. I'd always heard that we were a "smooth soul" group and was pleasantly surprised to hear some Sly-influenced tracks like "Give More Power". Also, I liked the fact that the bass voice was an integral part of the group sound. These four guys were not merely a lead singer star with just support harmonies. They function as a group.

This isn't the most important soul album to come out from this period but you will definitely not be disappointed if you pick up this overlooked gem.

A lost classic back in print........2000-12-08

This album, first released in 1969, is one of the classic soul records of the era. The Chi-Lites, under the direction of Eugene Record, had been laboring away since 1965, making unexceptional sides for Mercury's Blue Rock subsidiary, when they jumped ship in '68 for greener pastures at the Brunswick organization. Brunswick at that time was a nascent Black music powerhouse, with Jackie Wilson, The Artistics, Barbara Acklin and Young-Holt Unlimited regularly climbing the R&B charts. "Power To The People" was actually their second disc for Brunswick, and it was stone cold perfect, alternating the sweet soul they untimately became known for with thumping chunks of Sly-influenced proto-funk like the title cut, the iconoclastic "We Are Neighbors" and the original version of "You Got Me Walkin'" (later to become Jackie Wilson's last substantial hit). There are no less than 5 chart hits on this amazing disc.

Original vinyl copies of this record have been commanding steep prices for over 20 years (it's been cut out since Brunswick began it's death spiral during the payola scandals of 1978). If you're a fan of American soul, this should earn a place on your shelf right next to the Temptations' "All Directions", Hot Chocolate's "Cicero Park" and Al Green's "Call Me".
