4 out of 5 stars gettin kinda catchy.......2007-07-08

I saw the features live and fell in love with their high energy and catchy tunes. Their cd, with the short song lengths definately leaves you wanting more thats the only reason i give them four out of five stars. The lead singer's voice is awesome, and they are a very talented band!

5 out of 5 stars Hard not to love.......2006-02-26

I saw the features in summer 2005 supporting King of Leon and this was the first time i had heard them. Normally you dont expect much from a support band, but the Features got everyone in the room up on their feet with their catchy tunes, brilliant lyrics and great stage presence. This is their debut album (though they have loads of other great songs from their back catalogue) and every song on it could be a single in its own right. I listen to this album over and over because it never gets boring. I love the track "Idea of growing old" (i put it on a compilation cd to play in my local pub and even the old men love it!!!) it just makes you smile, the lyrics are so heartfelt and the tune is the type that gets stuck in your head for days. I also really like Kari-Ann which conjurs up an image of a dusty american town in the 70s which is odd as im from Croydon in the 1990s, just goes to show how lost in the Features music you can get!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Songs, good production.......2006-01-24

I caught the Features for the first time in 2003... spent the rest of that summer searching for bootleg performances and waiting for more shows. Their live sound is absolutely amazing.
Exhibit A is a very well put together album-- The selection of songs reflects the setlists from their shows at the time of the recording.
The production quality is very good, but the album strayed from the sound of their live shows. Regardless, the songwriting ability displayed here is quite impressive. All of the songs on the album have you singing/clapping/whistling/humming along after you've heard them only once. The highlights of the album include "Me, & The Skirts," "Harder To Ignore," and "Circus."
The intro to Circus is one of the more interesting intros that I've heard on an album in a long time.
Great Band, Great Album, Great Live Show.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band.......2005-11-26

This is a fantastic group live, I have seen them several times. I would also agree with a previous reviewer - although this CD is good, they have some better songs in their previous collection. However, this is still a quality outing. Interesting mix of genres, little bit of a talking heads-era throwback but not really. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Finally something great out of Nashville.......2005-10-13

These guys are great! I've seen them live about 8 times since 1998. They put on a great show and always deliver. If you can, I suggest you scrounge around and look for bootlegs of their older songs. They have quite a few gems that have never been released. Please buy this record so that their label will pay for them to make another one. If we don't support these great little bands, we may never hear from them again.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2003-10-05

"Generations" is the original theme music composed to accompany "The Generations Music and Photography Exhibit," which featured historical family photographs taken in the 1920's by George Skaroulis' grandfather,Theo Patronis. Patronis was born in Greece in 1897 and came to the US in 1913. With his camera, Patronis documented the family history as well as the old and new worlds he called home. The photography exhibit opened in Patmos, Greece in July 2000, and then had its premiere in the US in Atlanta, Georgia in January 2001. Pianist George Skaroulis' music captures an appreciation of life's simplest moments, as do the photographs in the 8-page booklet that accompanies the CD. For the most part, the music is quiet and peaceful. Some of the tracks have additional instrumentation, but the album is gentle and serene, and some of the pieces are breathtaking in their simple elegance and heartfelt emotion.

"Hopes and Dreams" opens the CD with piano and oboe in an almost wistful duet that sets the tone of the album. "Photographia" is a beautiful piece with a simple melody that mirrors the poignance of the photos. As the title implies, "Nostalgia" is a reflective, bittersweet piece, remembering times gone by. The title track begins with a variation on Chopin's Prelude in Cm, and evolves into a wonderfully flowing piece that includes flute and strings along with piano; this is one of my favorites on this album - very soulful and emotional. "Dreams of Children" captures a gentle innocence along with a moving forward. "Se Ymnumen" is another favorite - a very minor piece full of passion. It was inspired by a liturgical piece heard often in Greek Orthodox church services. (It was also on Skaroulis' debut CD, "Homeland.") "Melodia" is a simple, compelling piece that is reflective and very poignant.

A self-taught pianist, George Skaroulis doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles in his music, and none are needed. The messages are clear and straightforward, and Skaroulis is one of the more expressive pianists on the contemporary scene. Another exceptional album by an exceptional artist. Very highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful, calming music..........2001-11-28

This music is sooooooo beautiful. What a lovely surprise to discover this musician! I received a brochure with some Greek tapes, videos and CDs in the mail and came across the name of George Skaroulis. I had never heard of him, but decided to try amazon.com to listen to some of the selections... ahhhhhhh...
as I listened to each selection, my breathing began to slow down and my body began to relax...and a peaceful feeling began to take root. I am SOOOO grateful for this beautiful music.

Also.. his "Season Traditions" CD is one of THE most beautiful albums... Its music is sooo calming and beautiful that you can truly listen to it ALL YEAR LONG. Put this CD on and curl up with a good book by the fire... ah.. a little bit of heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Peaceful Escape.......2000-08-31

I purchased this CD after I skimmed every track for about 10 seconds each. I play this cd almost everyday. George's rendition of Shenandoah evokes different deep emotions out of me everytime I listen to him. All of the other songs bring such peace and is a great relaxer or backround music while I'm at work. Hopes and Dreams, Castelli, My New Friend, and Dreams of Children are my favorites. I think I might have to buy another copy of this cd before I wear out my current one. And a bonus, George is a great guy.

3 out of 5 stars [not worth the money...].......2000-06-23

First of all, let me say that I like these cats. I have like 'em for a while. They've been undaground droppin' mad cuts. Especially problemz with that eerie old school voice. But for six songs and one that I already have on the "laid in full" compilation-MIA-it's not worth the price. I was disappointed with that. This is basically an EP anyway. Don't drop the hard to earn cash for only half an albums worth.

5 out of 5 stars DAMN! This CD is HOT!.......2000-03-22

This is HOTNESS! The lyrics are tight, the beats are BANGIN', and the guest performances (like JuJu from the Beatnuts) make you crave for more. This is real Hip Hop from the core and along with the rawness they even got 2 bangin' joints that not only cats but females will wild out in the club for - "That's That", and "What it is" got me mad hyped. Whoa! "Hotness" is my shhhhhhh! Al Tariq (formerely known as Fashion of the Beatnuts) is at peak form and he flows with ease. Problemz got the illest lyrics and that cat Black Attack's flow is MURDER! He makes me wanna mcee! Linx, I'm always looking for the new joints to play and pump in my ride and when I hear your record, I FEEL YOU! Good looking! To all you young cats, old schoolers, semi-Hip Hop fans, thugs, females, club cats, and non-Hip Hop heads alike - COP THIS CD if you want to be inspired or just wild out!

5 out of 5 stars CRUCIFIX awsome album.......2001-01-04

CRUCIFIX exhibit a, this album happens to be one of my favorate bands. This album tells you a little bit about the history of this band. IT isn't that political I don't think, but there other album dehumanization i think is more political but this album just sounds great!if you want some good political punk or good punk music i suggest to LOOK for crass, aus-rotten, defiance, or casualties, "he he the casualties" and here them. THIS ALBUM EXHIBIT A also has live performence

5 out of 5 stars Crucifix Collection.......2000-10-24

If you haven't heard Crucifix, this is a great place to start... this is a thorough collection with studio and live tracks. It also includes a great history of the band. Sothira is one of the greatest punk vocalists of all time- with his sloppy slightly out of time punches to the driving dis-style hardcore this band has influnced many and will continue to do so for a long time to come. (You should really try to get this on vinyl.)

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars All-star jazz composers on musical selection.............2002-09-12

played by some very heavy weight talent.

The musical selection is very familiar to any jazz buff, composed by the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, W.C. Handy, Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane, Lil Armstrong, Thad Jones and Billy Strayhorn as well as the traditonal "When The Saints Go Marchin' In" which is treated as a jazz waltz on which everyone has some fun.

The piano chores are handled superbly as split between Patrice Rushen and Pete Jolly. Trumpet is split between Oscar Brashear and Snooky Young who plays some impressive open horn on "Struttin' With Some Bar-B-Que". Jerome Richardson sets the tone of "Mood Indigo" plying the bass clarinet and is showcased on tenor sax in a great rendition of "Lush Life", a favorite on the disk. Marshall Royal, famous for his alto work, plays excellent clarinet on "Struttin'.....". Tenor man Don Menza also plays on a couple of selections.

Besides "Lush Life", I also liked the hauntingly beautiful "Naima" with Kenny's guitar, Oscar's flugelhorn, Matt Catingub on flute and an outstanding, but brief, piano bridge by Patrice Rushen. "A Child Is Born" is also a favorite, I'm sure of Kenny's as well, taken as a beautiful solo guitar arrangement.

While not being a guitar album, as one might think, this is a great gathering of musicians playing an outstanding repertoire.

          Album Description

The long awaited follow up to 1997s Little Suns, Rockwells and Picassos shows well the growth of Rathburn as he once again explore's what might make this world a better place. Perhaps slightly more spiritual while at the same time more irreverent, this CD presents Joe with his tounge firmly planted in cheek. 11 superb original tunes are capped off with a fine cover of Michael Peter Smith's "The Dutchman". The production this time around is more stark, in your face, and intimate, and though other instruments abound, the CD is still about the song and Joe's voice and acoustic guitar.
