A very fine set of vintage recordings........2003-09-11
Smetana's three of his symphonic poems, which were composed during his stay in Sweden (between 1856 & 1861), are of fine qualities, if not, with the exception of Richard III, as finer as Ma Vlast. And Richard III is the piece I'm drawn myself to more often than not. Not only is it more memorable, but it's quite captivating (like Lizst's symphonic poems but a successful derivative of it). The sombre opening is arresting in its restraints. But turn to the dreamingly-like secondary subject and the beauty as well as elegance pervade throughout (it's funerealism casts a shadow also, but the melancholy is not as overwhelming as one might expect). The ceremonious passage (depicting Richard's dream of his triumph over the forces resisting his tyranny) is with imagination and somewhat cinematic with its bold gestures. And Kubelik really have this piece in full measure (how graceful is his handling of that secondary subject, with such poetry & inner world of wonder and woefulness).
But Novak's South Bohemian Suite (1936-1937) is the real find here. Is the work written when his native land was under the Nazi's threat. Yet this highly visionary piece remained dignified and the reflection, lofty. Is not a rebellious piece per se, but a testament of man's appreciation of life and nature when the surrounding seems threatening and uncertain. And while I've listened to the first movement "Pastorals" (Horizons) in particular, a number of composers sprung up in my mind in the inner beauty, poise, and the playfulness they themselves are masters of: Bax, Delius, Dohnanyi, Suk, Kodaly, Janacek, and fleetingly Myaskovsky (his Lyric Concertino) and for a slight moment, even Nikolai Rakov. Although there are some melancholy within, the piece is not self-defeating but absorbing in its own right. The Second movement "Dreaming" is equally as enthralling and the harp arpeggio towards the end add magic and wonder while the "Once Upon a Time" third movement and Epilogue add to my conviction that this piece is perhaps Novak's masterpiece. Kubelik's approach and the Czech Philharmonic's response glow as the piece goes along. It's the performance of such conviction and inner poetics that would (and quite frankly should) convey to even the skeptics of how major this piece actually is (no more than five recordings of the score is especially appalling). But, never mind the well justified advocacy for the moment. Just enjoy the piece, the disc, the performances, and Jaromir Havlik's informative booklet essay. Because to do otherwise will be a misfortune.

Amazon.com essential recording
These are the major works of Charles Ives (1874-1954), done in magnificent sound--and superlative performances--by Louis Slatkin and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. Three Places in New England--and perhaps this version--belongs in every collection of 20th-century American music. Also a treat here are The Unanswered Question and Central Park in the Dark. These aren't tone poems, quite. (It's hard to say what they are.) But Ives had the knack for providing even his most discordant works a tonal C major core. Usually. This would allow him--as in Symphony 3--to wander occasionally astray. Highly recommended. --Paul CookAmazon.com
This is a great Ives disc. You get: (1) his most popular "normal" symphony; (2) his most famous "radical" orchestral suite; (3) his most famous short piece; and (4) a bunch of interesting and little-known experimental pieces. In short, this disc is the perfect introduction to the music of Danbury- -Connecticut's greatest composer--a true American original. The last of the Three Places in New England is a short tone poem called The Housatonic at Stockbridge. It depicts the flow of the Housatonic River past a covered bridge and a village church, where the strains of a hymn tune seem to merge with the mist coming off the river. It's as hauntingly memorable as anything you'll ever hear. --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:

Fire and emotion in Czech national music.......2007-07-11
Perhaps as little known as "Hakon Jarl" is that Smetana -- like Beethoven with the Symphony No. 9 -- composed "Ma Vlast" after he was deaf as a result of syphillis. The composer eventually went mad from the disease and died in a madhouse. Janacek apparently met a better fate at the end.
Smetana's tone poems are not well known and this recording, made in 1971, is still the best recording of "Richard III", "Wallenstein's Camp" and "Hakon Jarl" made in the analog or digital eras. Czech conductor Rafael Kubelik is an outstanding advocate for the music. He has recorded it before; a recording with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra dating from the 1940s, with pretty good sound for the era, is available accompanied by Vitezslav Novak's South Bohemian Suite (ASIN: B00009L4T4). For my money, however, this is the recording of choice in this repertoire.
Smetana's tone poems are modeled after Liszt; they tell a story, usually about a Czech legend, and are developed in rising romantic waves that sweep the listener along, later settling into calm before again exploding into sound. They are not on the level of inspiration of a Tchaikovsky tone poem but they compare well to Dvorak's tone poems such as the "Noonday Witch".
The sound on this 35-year-old recording is excellent with good frequency response, clarity and bass depth. The playing of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is outstanding and they acquit themselves under Kubelik as if they were Praque residents that survived the 1968 Soviet takeover. This is a CD to treasure if you enjoy romantic Czech music.
An unknown repertoire of Smetana!.......2006-04-15
It should be said the Orchestral cycle of Smetana is unfinished without having listened these symphonic poems, which gives you a total support to enjoy his acclaimed "My Country"
Richard III (1858) as well as the other symphonic poems is built according the Liszt pattern: four movements, disguised and shortened form. The delirious paranoia and power `s thirst until the tragic finale is underlined with an admirable orchestration and frenetic drama.
Wallenstein `s Camp (1859) was originally conceived as an Overture based on a Schiller's play.
Hakon Jarl (1861) was written in homage to the hospitable Scandinavians and describes an episode from the time when Norway was converted to Christianity, and deals with the effort of this Regent in order to re-establish heathendom but his plans are modified because Olaf Trygvason, the legitimate heir of the dethroned king.
Carnival in Prague was composed in a terrible period in which Smetana, already threatened with a serious mental illness, could complete it. It is provided of heightened expressiveness where the composer intermingles folk dances, high jinks, whirl of a polonaise. The first performance was given before his sixtieth anniversary at the eve of his final reclusion in the Prague mental asylum, that constituted indeed his last sojourn due the proximity of his death.
Rafael Kubelik enriched and illuminated the score with his fervent and masterful directorial abilities, making sound the Symphonie-Orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks with precise articulation in every one of the attacks.

Howard Hanson Conducts American Masterworks

Customer Reviews:
An American sampler.......2006-06-21
Hanson was not only a composer and conductor, he was a great champion of American music in the 1950s, when its profile and exposure were much less than today. Many of the compositions included in this anthology have since been recorded in DDD in the Maxos American music series. Others have been recorded on other labels in newer, sometimes better, recordings. This does nothing to diminish these recordings or to dampen the memory of Hanson and his band.
However, many of the more well known recordings in this set have been re-done either more artistically and/or in better sound since these recordings first appeared the better part of 50 years ago. In particular, Barber's Capricorn Concerto and Medea suite, Ives's Third Symphony & Three Places in New England, Piston's Incredible Flutist and Schuman's New England Triptych have all been recorded many times in the intervening years. The recordings here sometimes magnify the thin and wiry sound coming from the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra. Some are simply not very well played, either.
That said, there are still five decade old gems to be located here. Among my favorites are William Bergsma's "Gold and Senor Commandante" ballet suite, a delightful nine-movement ballet suite that is clearly meant for the concert hall and not the stage. I also enjoy Morton Gould's "Sprituals" and George Whitfield Chadwick's "Symphonic Sketches" that merges British stoicism with American melody-making.
Best for me is the performance of Peter Mennin's Symphony No. 5. This 1962 recording was probably the first of a Mennin symphony and it still stands up well to competition. The dramatic three movement edifice is completely engaging. Its syncopated rhythm on an ostimato E-F-G-F sharp-A-E theme in the closing movement is catchy and stays long in memory.
Another important and rarely recorded piece is Johann Friedrich Peter's "Sinfonia in G". Peter was an early American composer from the Classical period; he was born 1746 and died 1813. The sinfonia mimics the CPE Bach crossover from Baroque to Classical early symphony with modular thematic development in each of its four movements.
There are other memorable chunks of Americana on this collection and everything sound wonderful, captured in ultra-clear and well-defined three channel tapes (produced here in stereo and not SACD) from the 1950s and early 1960s. The notes are very helpful and the bookelt details the origin of each recording. There is a very high level of nostalgia evident in this grouping that adds much to its appeal.
I think this collection is best suited to people that want to recapture the nostalgia of these great old recordings. Today's DDD technology has nothing on these fine sounding CDs even though Mercury missed an opportunity to release these as three channel SACDs. Perhaps that is coming in the future?
Another group of listeners that will most appreciate this collection are people that want exposure to many American composers and don't want to pay a lot to get it. The modest list price for this five CD collection is usually reduced by 40-50 percent when purchasing used from an Amazon vendor. I bought mine for about $20, the cost of less than three new Naxos CDs. This set is certainly worth more than that. Even veteran collectors (who didn't buy the original LPs or individual CDs) will probably find something new and different here.
Hanson's MLP Gems Are Back!.......2005-06-09
These performances of American Masterwoks by Howard Hanson are in most cases definitive accounts of rarely recorded pieces by many of our country's too often neglected composers -- Barber, Chadwick, Piston, Moore, Carpenter, Rogers, MacDowell, etc. While three of these recordings continue to be available in their original CD incarnations, the remaining two discs featuring Ives and Gould have been out-of-print for some time. Now with this box set they are deservedly restored to the catalog. Even better is the fact that the 5CD box sets being reissued have been reasonably priced because they are not SACD Hybrids. This set and three others (see my reviews) have a total cost cheaper than the original single issue CDs! Once again, Mercury Living Presence lives!
