Michael Praetorius, German composer and observer of things musical, was one of the most important musicians of the mid-17th century. His encyclopedia of musical instruments, Syntagma Musicum, richly illustrated and annotated, has in many instances given us our only description of the bewildering variety of musical noisemaking devices in use at the time. Terpsichore, similarly, is a collection of mostly French dance music that has never ceased to inspire players and listeners. It's the source for much of what we now call "Renaissance" music, even though it actually dates from about a hundred years later, and no early-music fair or festival would be complete without it. These performances, by an appropriately costumed Dutch early-music group, have the right sense of fun, and their instrumental arrangements are both zesty and colorful. Delightful. --David Hurwitz

4 out of 5 stars This is not the same as the Archiv vinyl LP.......2005-04-27

There was a terrific LP released by Archiv on vinyl in the 70s called "Dances from the time of Praetorius" - I bought this CD hoping it would be essentially the equivalent release. I realize now that the Archiv LP included only 6 dances actually written by Praetorius, which do appear to be included in this CD.

The Archiv LP also included 5 compositions by Erasmus Widmann and 12 by Johann Schein. As far as I can tell, that release is not available on CD. This CD may be only part of the solution for anyone who is trying to find it.

5 out of 5 stars Not just beautiful.......2005-02-24

This music is not just beautiful but also serves as a great period piece that can be used in class to set a mood. This is clearly secular and contrasts nicely with other music that is religious to show that all people's minds were not just on the heavens -- but were also, at least occasionally, on earth as well. This is music that is light and lifts the spirit --then I am sure as well as now. Play this for students and they will like it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music, Great Price.......2005-01-11

I have been a Praetorius fan since 1965 when I was a teenager, and I will always buy recordings featuring his music. I've had to re-order this particular CD again because I wore a hole in it playing it in the car, at home, hotel rooms, you name it. This CD is a lot of fun. One can dance to the tunes, hum along, and just kick back and relax ... not recommended when driving a car, however. Praetorius was also a "serious" religious musician, and this is a nice, secular change from his heavier stuff. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Good fun, variety, and versatility........2004-04-09

What we call Renaissance Dance Music has enjoyed increasing popularity in recent decades. No self-respecting record catalogue can afford to be without it. Naxos offers this 57-minute CD, comprising 28 items from Michael Praetorius's collection "Terpsichore" of 1612. Nowhere in the published collection was instrumentation specified, hence modern groups such as this have fun "setting" each piece for the combinations of period instruments they play. Sometimes some fancy percussion is added to help point the dance rhythms.

Good fun, variety, and versatility are to be heard in the work of this fine Swedish ensemble, marred slightly by a narrow recording spectrum that lacks high and low frequencies. A reproduction of "The Peasant Dance" by Pieter Breugel the Elder adorns the front cover.

5 out of 5 stars Renaissance Rocks!.......2002-07-15

This selection of music from Praetorius' Terpsichore (a small selection from over 300 individual pieces) is very enjoyable. It spans several different styles from few instruments to the whole kit and kaboodle, and voice. You can tell they had fun in those days. I keep this one in my car and listen to it over and over from start to finish, never needing to skip a track. If you are interested in Renaissance music, this is your ticket; and the price is right.

5 out of 5 stars barefoot kicker.......2007-01-10

Boccherini's Quintets for Guitar and Strings do not highlight the guitar as solo instrument in the way that better-known Baroque concerti frame and focus upon their respective solo instruments. Rather, the instrument insinuates itself into a company of strings and plays along with them, sometimes providing a steady background and occasionally emerging as a conventional soloist.

Like a soccer player who becomes an NFL kicker, this unexpected entree of the guitar into an unfamiliar environment displays pleasing crossover skills and unanticipated potentialities.

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble gives a truly splendid performance. Boccherini writes for a vivacious violin, and he certainly finds his desideratum among this ensemble. Indeed, the violin is arguably more prominent in this music than the guitar.

One does not finish a careful hearing of this performance astonished by Pepe Romero's technical virtuosity. Boccherini does not set this artist up for such an outcome. Rather, one concludes with admiration and gratitude for Romero's ability to sublimate certain soloist prerogatives and integrate himself fully into this string-ish company, where he plays with evident cameraderie.

The quality of the sounds produced by the Philips engineers is stunning, a word one strives not to use loosely.

¡Viva Romero and his tribe!

Field goals and extra points, after all, win football games.

5 out of 5 stars Vivid & stylish performances.......2006-10-26

Pepe Romero teams up with members from the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields Chamber Orchestra. Though originally released in the late 1970's, this is still the best recording of the guitar quintets of Luigi Boccherini. The playing is first rate, and the balance between guitar and strings is just right. (In most such recordings the guitar is either inaudible or unnaturally bloated.) Personally I'm not fond of all Boccherini's guitar quintets--one critic grumped that they're more fun to play than to hear. But No. 4 with its famous "Fandango" and No. 9 "La Ritirata di Madrid" are delightful.

4 out of 5 stars Joyous.......2005-12-06

A joyous celebration. That's the best way I can describe his music. It transport me to the past where I can wander around with grand ladies and gentlemen of the court, or go sailing off into the mist.

Luigi Boccherini (1743 - 1805): Guitar Quintets Vol. 1 (G. 450; G. 449; G. 448 "Fandango"). Performed by Richard Savino, guitar, and the Artaria Quartet (Elizabeth Blumenstock, Katherine Kyme, Anthony Martin and Elisabeth Le Guin).
Recorded in October, 1989, by Skywalker Sound, Nicasio, California.
Harmonia Mundi. Originally released as HMU 907026. Re-released in 2001 in the Classical Express series as HCX 3957026. Total time: 56'54".

Luigi Boccherini was, in fact, a cellist, and is today perhaps best remembered for his cello concertos, which, in his day, were considered to be on a par with Haydn. Boccherini was a major figure in the European music scene at the end of the 18th century, and that despite the fact that he spent a great part of his life in provincial Spain, away from the great cultural centers of Europe. His large musical output was by no means limited to cello concertos; he produced symphonies and a great deal of chamber music, especially quartets and quintets. A number of these he re-worked towards the end of his life, adding a guitar and thus giving the pieces a peculiarly Spanish flavor. Elisabeth Le Guin and Richard Savino describe the resulting sound in the CD booklet, and their description is so accurate that I would like to quote it here: "Boccherini creates a handsome blend, using the guitar variously as a sonic underlay, rather like continuo, and as a sweet-voiced soloist. What is most endearing, as always in Boccherini, is his artlessness. Lovely melodies spill forth unhindered ..."

The performance on this CD is as accurate and as charming as the verbal description quoted above. There is no competition here between soloist and string quartet, but rather a delightful harmony that makes for relaxing listening where one can allow oneself the luxury of following now one instrument, then another, the guitar being all the while present but never dominant. This is made a further pleasure by the pleasant acoustics and the wonderful engineering. Full marks! After hearing this, I soon went on to buy the other two discs in this series, both equally enjoyable.

His own Lutheranism notwithstanding, Handel wrote some remarkable music for the Catholic liturgy while in Rome as a young man. In our era they've been performed in the concert hall--large-scale, multi-movement pieces such as the robust Dixit Dominus and the gracious Nisi Dominus in particular coming across as miniature oratorios. But they were, in fact, church music--as Andrew Parrott reminds us with this speculative reconstruction of a lavish 1707 Vespers service for which the young Handel provided music. The performance by Parrott and his Taverner groups is exhilarating. The Dixit Dominus in particular packs a real wallop. The contralto, tenor, and bass soloists do excellent work with their limited music, but Handel was obviously writing for star soprano castrati, and the real stars here are Parrott's three (female) soprano soloists. Jill Feldman wasn't in her best voice for this recording: her louder moments can sound a bit strained, but her softer singing is truly lovely and she rips through some forbidding coloratura. Emma Kirkby is, of course, a delight in Laudate pueri, and Emily van Evera sings superbly--her timing in the solemn opening and closing bars of the Salve Regina will have you on the edge of your seat. --Matthew Westphal

This is one of those speculative "reconstructions" of a historical occasion, this particular one being more speculative than most, as nobody really knows what part Handel played in the Roman Carmelite Vesper for 1707, nor whether his music was actually played there or not, nor if so, by whom, nor whether other composers were involved. Andrew Parrott and his team have decided for practical reasons to include all seven of Handel's extant Latin motets and to embed them in Gregorian chant appropriate for the occasion. I assume that it was also practical rather than theoretical considerations which led Parrott to use female singers rather than boy sopranos or countertenors for the soprano and alto parts - this is thoroughly unhistorical, but understandable as these parts would originally have been performed by "castrati" (who have, thank God, in the meantime died out).

The juxtapositioning of Handel's opulent music - even as a 22-year-old, his interest was mainly in opera - and the dull sobriety of counter-reformation chant can, I suppose, be seen as highlighting the modernity and brilliance of Handel's music, although personally I think I could have appreciated this without the labour of listening to Latin Marian antiphones. Parrott seems to want to emphasize the brilliance of Handel's music with fast tempi, but these tend to put the music under a certain pressure that I felt it could have done quite well without - Handel's music is so wonderful that a more deliberate dwelling on it would have been more than acceptable.

Of the soloists, it is the divine Emma Kirkby who, once again, shines like a star in the artistic universe: both her "Laudate, pueri" and "Haec est regina virginum" are absolute highlights of the set, my only query being as to the rather anglicized pronunciation of Italian ecclesiastical Latin. Others have criticized Jill Feldman ("Saeviat tellus") and felt her voice to be strained, but personally I felt her to be quite delectable, my only stricture being that the smallness of her voice would normally have required a completely different concept from the recording engineer (more on this in a moment). The other soloists fulfilled my expectations, and Emily Van Evera ("Salve Regina") exceeded them. The exception to this was bass David Thomas, who I'm afraid inspired me to use the word "disastrous" in the title of this review - I don't think I have ever heard him sound so hoarse and so unsensitive as he does here. Choir and orchestra are both very good, although I felt that the "Dixit Dominus" for all its drive did not come over as well as on the old Warner-Erato recording by John Eliot Gardiner and his Monteverdi Choir.

Having used the word "disastrous" I need to add two other points that made me feel that this CD set was very ambiguous. One is the engineering. The sound is realistic, for a big church, but distant, there being apparently no supporting microphones to pick out soloists. It may be a problem with my hardware, but I found listening in front of loudspeakers to be a trial, very unsatisfying, and I had almost given up when I changed to headphones and suddenly the whole acoustic seemed to come into focus (although even then there were softer passages when I felt that I would have loved to hear the soloists more loudly and clearly). I'm sure this sound was a deliberate decision by Andrew Parrott, but I really do feel that the kind of sound one can hear on many a studio recording would have been a better choice.

The other "disastrous" factor on this re-issue is the so-called "documentation". Not only are there no texts, but also no indications of who is singing when, no names of orchestra members, no indication of the instruments used and an accompanying essay of less than one page that I found to be thoroughly useless - it would have been simpler and more rewarding if Virgin had simply (with permission, of course) reprinted Stanley Sadie's review of the original issue from "Gramophone Magazine".

1 out of 5 stars Fine voices, fine orchestra, lousy interpretation, bad recording.......2006-08-07

As with many recordings of this period of music, there is a shrillness to the sound that is at best off-putting. I got tired of it barely two sections in. I understand about period instruments and period performance technique and have sung many Handel works accordingly. Historical accuracy is important, yet in this recording many fine voices, including those of the chorus, seem wasted, sacrificed on the altar of a false sense of hisorical accuracy gone to the brink of charicature. The sound is dry and brittle, not at all full of the life that Handel breathed into all his work. Listen to several other recordings if you can, then preview some of the portions of this recording before you buy.

5 out of 5 stars A vision of the future emerging from the past.......2004-05-07

This young man, only 22 in 1707, has composed here some of the most advanced Vespers of his time if not of all times. He covers an enormous musical range from Gregorian Antiphons to Bach's fugue style and a treatment of instruments and melodies that announces Mozart and all 18th century developments. He is a composer that is able to bring together the heritage of several centuries and the promises of his own time and even his future. He joins heritage and vision in music. What's more he gives to these Vespers a sound and charm that is in the tradition of the Renaissance : the vision of the Virgin is pure, happy, extremely brilliant, beautiful, and absolutely redeeming. No austere element comes into this picture to spoil it. It is Raphael's Virgin, the one we can only see in Dresden in Germany that is projected into our brains, ears, skulls and hearts. Handel is here at his best and yet he is only starting his career and many other bests will come. What's more Andrew Parrott conducts this music with flexibility, brilliance and more than gusto, real enthusiasm. Some wonder how Handel, a German Protestant, could compose such vespers to the Catholic Virgin and for a Catholic religious order. They just don't understand Handel. He is all-inclusive, he is able to absorb, dominate and transcend any style and objective. He knows that music is its own aim and target and not the religious intention. He knows, just like Monteverdi or Bach, that the best way to enhance any religious faith or belief is to provide it with the beauty of the most advanced and varied music one can invent and perform. These Vespers have to be considered as some of the best along with Monteverdi's and Vivaldi's. And they contain no sad lamentation, just the pleasure of knowing that redemption is at the tip of Mary's fingers, provided we can touch her heart. And this music must move her in the deepest layers of her love and care for human sinners, human beings, humanity. In other words this music is a milestone on the road to the Erklärung and the Enlightenment of the 18th century that will produce our modern world. It thus can become an inspiration for the new phase in which we have to navigate towards an ever more humane world. It reverbates with peace and human communion.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful music - poor performance.......2002-04-03

This has the potential to be a very fine recording - excellent soloists, amazing music - in fact Dixit, Saeviat Tellus, Laudate are some of Handel's finest music writing. Unfortunately the music is ridiculously rushed, with the feeling that Parrot was in a hurry to catch a bus or something and the result is very disappointing. There is little worse than inappropriate tempi (except for terrible playing or soloists), added to that, the playing is not particularly stylistic or musically intelligent, possibly due to the fast pace. In fact, the whole set seems to lack inherent expression and musicality, despite the calibre of the soloists. The finest Dixit I have heard was coupled with Laudate Pueri Dominum (also the finest I've heard) in a single disk with Isobel Buchanan, Anne Mackay, Michael Chance, William Kendall, Henry Hurford with the choir of King's College and Stephen Cleobury - A Decca disk. I'd go for that one!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2000-06-08

An interesting attempt at recreating the whole Vespers as it may have been (either Handel did not write a whole Vespers or it has not all come down to us). I liked the attempt: it really could have been that way.

I also liked the soloists and the choir and the orchestra. I did feel some of the tempos were a bit faster than was flattering to the soloists and the choir: it seemed they were SO fast that the notes could not even be sung well. And I generally like fast tempos especially by clear voices, as these are. I just felt the tempos were too fast at times. I, like the other reviewer, wanted printed texts included: how much can it cost to add two pages to the album liner?

Otherwise it's a fine recording that sheds an interesting light on some of Handel's early works.

Though these works are early pieces by Handel (from his brief sojourn in Italy) they show his genius as clearly as many of his more celebrated later works.

If you're a Handel devotee, like me, you might want to add this to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Scarlatti.......2007-05-26

I've been a Scarlatti fan since I discovered the Ralph Kirkpatrick recordings on Columbia when I was in high school--some 40 years ago. Over the years I have played some of them on the piano and collected numerous recordings, performed on both harpsichord and piano. I first purchased Scott Ross's complete collection after sampling the 3-CD Scarlatti Anthologie and being pleased with what I heard. After listening to about a third of the 34 CDs on which the 555 sonatas are recorded I can say that Scott Ross's performances equal or exceed anything I've heard from any other performer on harpsichord. There are recordings by other performers I rate very highly--Wanda Landowska's characterful pre-WW II recordings and Andras Schiff's superb piano recordings of the sonatas come to mind--but Scott Ross has it all. Meticulous accuracy, a truly engaging sense of rhythm--so critical in bringing out the character of the sonatas, a superb sense of the Spanish idiom Scarlatti uses, elegant ornamentaion, a masterful selection of stops, and the wonderful recorded harpsichord sound all make this set a thoroughly satisfying musical experience for the Scarlatti lover. Bringing all of this quality to the formidable task of recording all of Scarlatti's 555 sonatas is a tremendous achievement and a true service to the music loving public. In addition to the pleasure of having such a treasure trove of great Scarlatti performances, the complete collection has afforded me the oppotunity to discover many elegant gems among Scarlatt's lesser known sonatas--the kind that stay in my head days after hearing them. That Ross died at the relatively early age of 38 was a real loss. If you're a Scarlatti fan, treat yourself to this complete collection. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing accomplishment.......2005-10-20

This recent re-release of Scott Ross's complete recordings of Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas is truly a great a accomplishment. The 34 CDs contain all 555 sonatas. The vast majority are played by Ross on the harpsichord, or harpsichord's I should say. Four different harpsichords were used, one Italian and three French. While various groups of Sonatas might sound a bit different it doesn't take away from the experience at all.

And what an experience it is. Ross's harpsichord playing is bright and lively when required, relaxed and subdued at other times. While it's hard to imagine that Ross was able to become intimately familiar with 555 sonatas over the year it took to record them, his performances do not show any signs of boredom. The sonatas are overall focused and well performed.

In addition to the hundreds of harpsichord sonatas, there are also recordings of Scarlatti's five sonatas with string and woodwing accompaniment as well as his three organ sonatas. All keyboard parts are played by Ross.

The packaging of this set is very compact. Each CD is in a thick paper cover, the whole of the set in a single box. There is also a 255 page booklet that contains a short description of nearly every sonata. Additionally there is an interview with Ross from 1986.

This is a wonderful set for any fan of Scarlatti and Ross. And at the price, it would even be worth it for anyone who enjoys Baroque harpsichord music but isn't familiar with Scarlatti. I highly recommend this set.

We know Handel mostly for the operas (Ariodante, for example), biblical oratorios (Messiah), and instrumental works (Water Music) he wrote for London high society. Yet he was producing masterpieces such as these Latin sacred works composed in Rome when he was barely into his 20s. The big chorus-and-orchestra Dixit Dominus and the soprano showpieces Sæviat tellus, Laudate pueri, and Salve Regina have been recorded several times in recent years (including, most notably, Andrew Parrott's thrilling full-scale reconstruction of the lavish Vespers service for which Handel probably wrote these works), yet this lively performance by Marc Minkowski and les Musiciens du Louvre is as good as any of them. Since Handel wrote this music for virtuoso castratos, it's no surprise that the stars here are the (female) sopranos Annick Massis and Magdalena Kozená. Both have sweet, flexible voices with more body than, say, Emma Kirkby or Jill Feldman (two of Parrott's divas), yet without the wide vibrato and relentless legato that make so many singers unsuitable for period-instrument Handel. The performance isn't flawless: Massis does sometimes let her vibrato, however narrow, get in the way of long, sustained notes; the choir, surprisingly, lets vibrato get in its way overall, sounding better suited to Beethoven than Handel. Yet the energetic tempos and generally skillful execution make this a very worthwhile release. It competes against one of Parrott's finest recordings (two discs for a lower price than Minkowski's one), but if you don't want all that chant mixed in with your Handel or happen to dislike singers such as Kirkby and Feldman, then you won't find a better Dixit Dominus than this. In fact, real Handel fans should want both. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars Ethereal Clarity Sublime Baroque singing.......2005-05-14

This music shines blissfully though the centuries and Kozena's voice, passion, sincerity and articulation will make your spirit soar. Handel, the master of the joyous oratorio does not disappoint and Massis' performance is of equal brilliance.

Hard day? This could be the antidote you need!

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing performance of Dixit Dominus.......2005-03-28

If the use of 'pedestrian' to describe a music performance is ever justified, this would be it. This is a horrible, horrible performance of Dixit Dominus - this piece demands a lot of the choir, but they don't even try to hit the right pitch. Handel would not appreciate this cacophony. I don't remember much of the remaining on the disc. I was too dismayed that I donated my copy to the school library.

3 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag - Some Good, Some Very Bad!.......2002-04-04

Dixit, Laudate, Saeviat are some of Handel's most glorious music. Overall I would NOT recommend this disk highly, if at all. The soloists are all very nice, esp the sop Massis, but the orchestration and choir are not at all musical for the most part, with a wooden, almost military feel with little, if any, expression. This is not helped by the ridiculous tempi imposed by the conductor. Much of the music is FAR too fast, resulting in a rushed feel, with the soloists and other performers having to compensate - not a good sound! A real shame, because if the music weren't so rushed, it would be far more attractive. Having said that, the 'De Torrente' sop duet in Dixit is ravishing, and almost perfect in it's gentle, lilting pace - very odd to say the least given the furious pace of the initial Dixit chorus (FAR too fast!) Perhaps the lack of musicality evident in most of the disk is due to the excessive speed? For a better Laudate and Dixit on the one disk I'd go for Stephen Cleobury with the English Chamber Orch and Kings College Choir. Not perfect, but far more preferable to my ears!

4 out of 5 stars Minkowski does it again!.......2002-01-16

If you want to experience some absolutely wonderful music by Handel that is rarely performed then you should check out this disc. As I have made clear in my other reviews, I am a big fan of Marc Minkowski and his brilliant orchestra. These are passionate and exciting performances like most of his productions. Though, some things disturbs me. Most of all:
Why no harsichord? Many of the pieces would strongly benefit from the use of a harpsichord. The rhytmical details are really quite lost in the more dramatic movements and the textures easily gets blurry. It might be "authentic" in some way but there are so many other things that are not so why does he bother? As usual the french choirs are not really impressive. The intonation is far from impeccable but still, compared to for example the choir of C. Rousset, good and acceptable. Overall a great disc which is by the way a live recording. Kozena and Massis are superb. Dixit Dominus is the true highlight of the cd. If you like Handel it's worth buying just for this piece!
Yet another recording that kills of the "flat-earthers" illusion that period performances are boring!!

5 out of 5 stars Vivid and enthralling.......2001-12-29

Having just panned John Eliot Gardiner's recent recording of Dixit Dominus (Philips, Nov. 2001), I will only say here that this disc is eminently satisfactory for all the reasons cited in the other reviews. I'm especially taken with the solo work, and with Ms. Massis in particular - her account of Saeviat Tellus is a marvel. Minkowski gives the Dixit all of its startling, vivid color and the live performance seems to add to the lustre. Don't hesitate to invest in this recording - it will repay you with hours of listening pleasure. Stanley Sadie is right!

Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

DGG's sound is excellent.

Opposite Rio de Janeiro's small Villa Lobos museum -- in what was his last home -- is a modern apartment building. Its name is Edificio Sebastiao Bach. VL would have loved it: he adored Bach above all other composers. Hence the 'Bachianas Brasilieras' (which, however, owe little to Bach beyond their joy in sound and intricacy in structure).

What previous reviewers have said is true. The sound on these disks is abominable. A much better job could be done -- and should have been done -- of remastering the originals. That won't happen unless there's a sudden renewal of interest in the music of this Brazilian master.

Further, the the performances -- and the composer's conducting -- are generally lackluster. Still, any VL lover should not be without this set. Toscanini no doubt did a better job with Brahms's symphonies. But who wouldn't give his soul for a recording of Brahms himself conducting the four of them?

One special recommendation: the 'Choros' stand close to the summit of VL's art, more so than the BBs. A dance not a choral form, the 'choro' is both universally appealing and quintessentially Brazilian.

3 out of 5 stars It was okay in the early days when V-L was unrecorded.......2003-09-25

This set comprises a huge array of Villa-Lobos' works conducted by himself and, sorry to say, none too well. He seems to lack the sensitivity other interpreters can bring to his work - he's far from alone in this situation - many composers have fallen into the same trap. The textures are thick, the sound cluttered (mono it might be but surely the engineers could have done better?) and the music simply lacks the excitement of which it is capable to no small degree. In part, the orcehstra is barely capable of performing such music. Stravinsky was one thing - Villa-Lobos' internal rhythmic complexity and stubbornly awkward manuscript writing is something aside. He did not always notate in the simplest way.

Probably the best item in the set is the "Discovery of Brazil Suite". At least it received an audience and was not re-recorded until very recently. Some of the Bachianas have been handled better by others but at least this recording was a first complete set. Only the No. 5 was otherwise known.

I have to confess that if I'd encountered Villa-Lobos through these performances I doubt I'd have followed through. Thankfully I came in via the accomplished and brilliant performance of his Quintette en forme de Choros by the New York Wind Quintet. Later, I encountered the LPs of the "Discovery of Brazil Suite", credible but flat, compared with other recordings appearing around the same time. Compare, for instance, his own 1958 recording of Forest of the Amazon in which he shows how well he can conduct if he tries, not to forget the superb hi-fi stereo recording that really let light and air into the performance.

Nonetheless, I bought this set on the strength of price and to have the "Discovery" Suite on CD, along with a couple of his Bachianas. I would not recommend these discs as an introduction to the composer. Do not be tempted by its modest price!

3 out of 5 stars For Villalobos Fans Only.......2000-05-01

There is one reason and one reason only to buy this box set of historical recordings made by Villalobos himself in the 1950s: a fanatic admiration for the works of this composer. But you should know that if you love this music, you should be prepared to buy other, more recent, recordings of these works. These are mono recordings, and the sound textures you expect from this composer are therefore muddled and flattened (the beautiful Choros No. 2 is the biggest victim here, which sounds so flat that you will miss the playful contrasts between the flute and the clarinet). You should also know that Villalobos is not a great conductor, but the lack of precision in the playing is often compensated by the emotional weigth he gives to his performances (he appears to have been a crowd pleaser). There are many pleasures, however, and I listen to disc number 3, which includes the Bachianas Brasileiras 4-7 so often that it has become a soundtrack to my life. Bachianas 4 and 7 deserve more listeners. The famous Bachiana Brasileira No. 5 included in this set, is sung by Victoria de los Angeles beautifully, but this performance is also available in a single CD anthology. I am giving this set three stars: one for the historic importance of these EMI records, one for the affordability and completeness of the box set itself (it is a bargain at $6 per CD), and one for the emotional significance of hearing these performances conducted by Villalobos (I am a Latin American and this music fills me with both pleasure and pride).

Heinichen's Dresden Concertos created quite a stir when they were first released a couple of years ago, and for good reason. This is vital, colorful music scored for a large and varied ensemble. Like most composers of his day, Heinichen spent the majority of his compositional talent in the service of vocal music, for either the opera house or church. These pieces represent his only surviving set of concertos, and anyone who enjoys, for example, Bach's Brandenburg Concertos or the orchestral works of Zelenka will certainly want to hear these as well. These performances are simply the last word in style and virtuosity. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Great music well played........2006-10-24

I hadn't heard of Heinichen until I got a bonus CD (celebrating 25 years of Music Auntiquita Koln) with something. The first track, which really hooked me, was the first concerto on this set, and so I bought it.

Two discs of concertos by somebody is a lot of their music, but I find myself playing both of these through at a single sitting quite often - there is something about the way that Heinichen keeps the musical ideas flowing that I find very satisfying. He also manages to use a lot of different sounds - I can't imagine much more contrast than between the first movement of that first concerto that I heard - tightly clustered strings playing in a very controlled sprightly manner and, a movement on the second disc that is played on something like bagpipes with sliding notes.
MAK of course give an excellent performance as usual.

This was a doubly excellent find: a new composer (to me at least) and a great CD. However, I now have two other discs of Heinichen wind concertos and sonatas on CPO which are also very good, and which I also recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds as fresh as ever. .......2005-06-22

It's a few years since this set won the Gramophone Award, but hearing it again very recently, it still provides a thrilling listening experience.
I'm not normally a lover of prominent brass instruments in early music where the sonorities are often too lean and bright for my taste. Well, there's plenty of brightness here, but it all comes from the sparkle and energy of an orchestra at the very top of its form.
I wouldn't say this is a set to listen to at one sitting. Better to pick and choose two or three concertos at a time. Or better still, go for the excitement of progamming just the allegros and hold on to your seat as the rhythms and stratospheric brass catapult you into the midst of the hunt.
    Great stuff.

    5 out of 5 stars Magical discsý.......2003-11-10

Heinichen is the Deep Purple of baroque music! Forgotten, but clearly GREAT! This music is easily as enjoyable as Bach, Vivalidi, Handel and Telemann. If you enjoy baroque, this is surely a collection you ought to own. The flawlessness of these recording is breathtaking. It has a kind of richness that I don't find in compact disc recordings. These recordings force you to sit down and just listen. The compositions may not be as complex and "deep" as Bach or Handel, but its very enjoyable and clearly more relaxing. The incredible Dresden Concerti (period instruments) performed flawlessly under Goebel. What an unsurpassable job in bringing Heinichens curiously abandoned works back into the catalog. Two or three hundred years from now Deep Purple will get their due as one of the important artists in rock music history.

PS: If you like baroque wind music, you will fall in love with this collection.
This is a must for the Baroque fan.

5 out of 5 stars HIP and Alive.......2000-12-26

This is a superb recording. The performances are vibrant and the quality of the recording is stunning. There is a warmth and fullness that is often missing in recordings of period instruments. The ensemble sounds HUGE. I particularly like the second movement of the Concerto in F (S. 234). Oboes are used instead of strings as the accompaniment to the flute solo.

A must have for any lover of baroque music.
