"the eClecTIc is some serious Hip-Hop. You can call it underground, but this is the real deal. This is what I call fixing the mainstream. the eClecTic is a Hip-Hop lab scientist and research technician who is in search for the antidote to the Hip-Hop disease that inflicts us on a daily basis. Unlike any pharmaceutical company, however, his search is not monetary, but a genuine concern for our health. On the first listen of "Round Midnight" one begins to feel better both mentally and physically. The lyrics are conscious and the voice and flow soothing to the soul. One may compare him to The Roots and other Hip-Hop live acts, but in my humble opinion, he's better: Live sax, keys, bass and electronics. "

Will the real Slim Shady please stand up? On Eminem's sophomore album, he can't decide who he wants to be: the deranged pseudo-psycho of the Slim Shady LP, or a nice guy who just likes to rhyme about slicing and dicing his girlfriend ("Kim"). Of course, according to Eminem, he's just kidding. He refuses to take responsibility for the misogynistic, homophobic bile he spews, whining that he's the victim of people who don't get his unique sense of humor. It's good old America's fault if the kids aren't alright (Eminem blames bad parenting), and he's just capitalizing on Uncle Sam's dark side. On the Marshall Mathers LP, he's ambivalent about his fame, angry at his life, pissed off that people take him seriously, and fightin' mad at boy bands--and a lot of other white people. But the blue-eyed brat is acutely aware of his status as rap's resident alien: he has the most offensive mouth running, but never uses the "N" word. He gives lyrical love to tragic (black) legends like Tupac and Biggie while dissing white rappers hard. Even sitting duck Puffy gets the kid-gloves treatment. Of course, Eminem is an interesting, witty rapper, and there's some nice production on this CD, courtesy of Dr. Dre and others. But the hatred in Eminem's rhymes makes the album rotten at its core. And his protests that Slim Shady is just a persona become less convincing with each arrest. Then again, Eminem's got it hard: he's rich, famous, white, and male. --Lizz Mendez BerryAlbum Description

Solid Sophmore Set.......2007-06-26
Stan - excellent, almost chilling, rap about the pyschology of an obsessed fan who progressively comes unglued when Em doesn't answer his fan mail right away. The chorus from Dido's tune is excellently woven into the rap. Very grim ending. Em's critics couldn't write anything this insightful
Who Knew - good, sarcastic examination of critics who blame music for some wacko's actions.
The WAy I Am - Em gets off his chest frustrations of being famous and never getting a second's privacy from fans who never think maybe he likes to be let alone once in a while.
The REal Slim Shady - very bouncy, catchy rhythm and lyrics. Got lots of radio and video play
Remember Me? - hardcore rapl Em gets to yelling in it. Features other rappers. Very heavy
I'm BAck - Em is back, again knocks/mocks people who blame him for others' actions. Kinda slow and slurry at times, like a record being dragged
Amityville - very heavy, Em yelling in this one too
The Kids - funny rap w/South Park references. Would be lighthearted, except people wind up meeting bad ends.
Criminal - another rap aimed at people who blame Em for violence
A rapper even a white lady and mother can love!.......2007-04-27
The key turning point, that made me decide to tune into Eminem, and see whether he actually has something good to offer with his stuff, that maybe, just maybe, has passion, soul, and POWER,(as any song that's heavy on sex and violence inevitably MUST also have, or else it becomes truly just angry junk food music), was my viewing of the movie "Scary Movie 3". Specifically, when I saw the white 'farm boy' rapper, who my boys told me was actually a parody of EMINEM, do his priceless 'rap' contest performance, then, I thought....This is totally cool! Let's buy an Eminem CD, and check out the boy!
Well, it only took one spin of Tracks 1,2, and 3,(and one or two later tracks, with a twist on the same themes as the first 3 songs), with their amazing powerful tongue-in-cheek, SLAMMINGLY effective, simultaneous parody of self (Mr. Slim Shady),and the 'ladies' (girlfriend, husband-blaming, wallowing in victimhood, mother, who he wants to 'f..', or bossy ladies on the warpath, or music executives who want to 'silence' his music's soul, cause it's too full of anger at their greed and jaded materialism, and so tell him in bored, whiny voices to try to write stuff that 'sells'), to fall in love with this POET EXTRAORDINAIRE, and his lyrics, which do some heavy duty spittin' on ladies (and men), but also can end with a softly spoken, sweet "I'm just foolin' ladies! You know I love you". I knew at once that this young man moved me, and that he spoke to me as well as to the boys groovin' to his beat and his poetic honest, no b.s., lyrics!
THIS IS ONE GENIUS THAT SHOWS WHAT RAP AT ITS BEST CAN BE, AND I AM HOOKED. I do laugh and shake my head, and cringe at times, when EMINEM spits out one or another line about his g.f. tied up in the trunk! But I also can't help but privately rock myself, and 'rap' with him, and say, keep on rocking Mr. Slim Shady...You got a soul, and you keep on sharing it with your generation, mine, and my kids' !!

On The Slim Shady LP, Eminem wants it all. He's conflicted, you see; the world has treated him badly, and he wants to respond in kind. But he isn't a straight-up gangsta--this is, after all, the first release on Dr. Dre's Aftermath Records, his post-Death Row-era venture--and Eminem (born Marshall Mathers) doesn't really want anyone to follow in his footsteps, which leads to some interesting contradictions on this album. In the first single, "My Name Is," he's self-deprecating, rapping about his poor upbringing and his hairy palms. But on the very next song, "Guilty Conscience," he plays the devil to Dr. Dre's angel--that is, until Eminem brings up an incident from Dre's devilish past, rapping, "You gonna take advice from someone who slapped Dee Barnes?" Later, on "'97 Bonnie & Clyde," he turns Will Smith's "Just the Two of Us" on its ear, making it a tale of murder; but on "My Fault," he actually feels bad--though whether it's for the girl he overdosed or for himself is tough to figure out. With his nasal Midwestern tone, Mathers has a clean, clear flow, and the production--by Dr. Dre, Marky, and Jeff Bass--is crisp but consistently fun. With his outlook, it's tough to take Eminem too seriously, but he's made an album you don't have to take seriously to enjoy. --Randy SilverAlbum Description

Shady's not shabby.......2007-06-26
My Name Is - definitely catchy. The sanitized version got tones of airplay of course.
Guilty Conscience - insightful rap into what happens when 3 different young men are confronted by powerful temptations/emotions [need for money, sex, wife cheats]
Brain Damage - creative rap about a kid who's taken too much crap at school and home and fights back
If I Had - rapper muses on what he'd do if he had money
'97 Bonnie and Clyde - most genuinely disturbing rap. Depicts covering up murder of wife in company of daugther.
My Fault - rapper causes death of girl by letting her eat way too many shrooms
Cum on Everybody - gets listener hopping around
Rock Bottom - a look at feelings of a guy for whom everyday life is a struggle with poverty
Just Don't Give a
I'm Shady - has a thumping groove
Bad Meets Evil - Em is joined by Royce Da 5-9 in a parody on a Wild West Ghost Town story

Please spare me the lectures about cursing, and violence. Yes it is has both but unlike the next album, this one is more playful and cartoonish. For example he doesn't rap angrily or very threatining. And a lot of the violence he talks about is very hard if not impossible to attempt. In fact, most of the tracks are quite hilarious especially: Brain Damage, My Name Is, My Fault, Role Model, and Just Don't Give a F**k. And it has the amazing track called Rock Bottom. I will say this though: this album is NOT for the faint hearted. But if you can take a joke and not take it seriously It ought to be very good CD in your opinion.

Despite the cursing and wierd topics, there are plenty of good tracks that everyone can relate to is they just listen.

J5 offer a refreshing new hip-hop perspective that contains both old and new school influences, tights flows over some of the strongest and most original beats and cuts you'll hear.
Being an EP it only has 13 tracks (8 originally plus the 5 bonus tracks), and only 6 are actual songs (although Cut Chemist's little skits are quite entertaining), but all of these are strong and show (just a taste) of what J5 have in stall for us in the future. "Concrete Schoolyard" is an instant classic, my other favourites being "Jayou" and "Action Satisfaction". I also don't mind the dubs, freestyle any one?
The only thing you'll be disappointed about buying this CD is that you'll be craving more tracks so pick up their LPs (Quality Control and Power in Numbers)if you're feeling it.
P.S. don't give this CD 3 stars just coz its short, its an EP, so rate it as one. (although it'd still be worth a least 4 if it WERE an LP...)

The Weatherman LP.......2007-07-06
Evidence the rapper/producer.......2007-07-05
With his solo debut, The Weatherman LP, EV/Evidence/Mr. Slow Flow/The Weatherman is able to show off a lot of his artistic creativity. This is probably because Dilated is no longer with Capitol Records. This album is now on ABB Records, which means that EV has more creative control over his music, which is a major reason why this album is worth at least a few listens.
The production done for this album is top notch, with long-time collaborator and friend, The Alchemist on boards for 5 of the tracks. The third track, Letyourselfgo, where he's a featured rapper along with Phonte, has a tight beat that'll definately grab your attention. On Chase the Clouds Away, The Alchemist samples again and produces the only sunny song on the album. The beat is steady while Alchemist, again, chops it up.
Sid Roams, the team of Joey Chavez (also a long time collaborator and friend) and Tavish Graham also help out with 3 of the tracks. These tracks use a very low end bass, and adds to the rainy forecast effect that the album has. Rakaa of Dilated raps on the Sid Roam produced "Perfect Storm" and DJ Babu produces 2 of them, so as you can see, the Dilated family is here. Other producers here are Jake One, DJ Khalil, and, o yea, The Weatherman himself.
This album is a very personal one, which deals with many aspects of Ev's life and career, such as where he grew up (LA), where he enjoys visiting (NY), and how he deals with pleasure and pain. The death of his mother is a constant theme throughout the album, hence why the majority of it has a rainy theme to it. He's also out to prove that it isn't always sunny in Southern Cali.
Guest appearances include Defari, Planet Asia, Slug, Big Pooh, Joe Scudda, and Madchild.
As far as his rapping goes, it hasn't improved much, but he's already a decent rapper.
Conclusion: If you're a Dilated fan, you'd be better off just buying it. If not, it is still worth a listen. It might be the sleeper of the year.

Eminem's Best Album.......2005-10-05
Song reviews:
1. Public Service Announcement 2000 - It's a skit.
2. Kill You - Funny, but the raps in the middle are not quite as catchy as many of the other songs on the album. The hook is great. If you don't agree with me, I "will f!%#ing kill you!" (Rating: 8.5/10)
3. Stan - It can drag on slightly, but the story is great. I think its one of the most creative and well written songs that Em has ever done. (Rating: 9/10)
4. Paul (Skit) - Another skit.
5. Who Knew - The lyrics are very creative, and the first verse is especially cathcy. (Rating: 9.5/10)
6. Steve Berman (Skit) - Another skit, showcasing the fact that Steve Berman is a dumb@$$ who does not want to make money.
7. The Way I Am - It can get a little tiring, but the rant against everybody is a solid song. Not as good as some of the others though. (Rating 8/10)
8. The Real Slim Shady - This is one of the weaker songs on the album. The lyrics are not as offensive as the rest of the album, which makes me not like it as much. Lol (it's true though). (Rating: 6/10)
9. Remember Me? - The first two verses are crap, but Em's verse is very good. Hmm... maybe I should try not saying "f!#%ing" for six minutes... NAH! (Rating: 6/10)
10. I'm Back - Great SONG!! I love it. It's catchy and the lyrics are great. I especially love the Columbine part, although part of it is censored!! [The censored part is: "I take seven kids from Columbine, stand 'em all in line") Well, I will take seven kids from Columbine and bash their freakin' heads out! Censor that, Interscope! (Rating: 10/10)
11. Marshall Mathers - Apparently Em doesn't like homosexuals. Kind of a sucky song.. but he does like to kill gays. (Rating: 4/10)
12. Ken Kaniff (Skit) - This is the most F'ed up song (skit actually) that I've ever heard. Unless you like gay porn... you should skip it. (Rating: -895/10)
13. Drug Ballad - Another mediocre song, I don't like the dance song beat. (Rating: 5/10)
14. Amityville - I like the angry murder fantasies, but the song's sound can be abrasive at times. (Rating: 7/10)
15. B!#@h Please II - Great beat. Great raps, although the end of Em's falls a bit flat. Overall, a very good song with a very cathcy hook. (Rating: 9.5/10)
16. Kim - The hook is good, but the so-called verses suck. Yeah, I'd like to violently murder some people too, but I'd make a better rap about it. The violence is cool though. P.S.: Interscope needs the stop censoring stuff.. so what if a six-year-old got his throat cut. (Rating: 4/10)
17. Under the Influence: A very good song, everyone's raps are good. (Rating: 10/10)
18. Criminal: The last verse of this song is the best part of any Eminem song ever. I dare you to listen to this song without rewinding that part like six times. (Rating: 10/10)
GREAT ALBUM!
THIS IS WHAT THIS WOULD LOOK LIKE ON THE EDITED VERSION
"The Marshall Mathers LP" is undoubtably Eminem's best effort. While "The Slim Shady LP" and "The Eminem Show" are great albums, they cannot match up to the dark humor and catchy songs of "The Marshall Mathers LP." I sincerely believe that there is not one bad song on the album. "The Marshall Mathers LP" is not, however, for the faint of heart, as every song contains multiple F-bombs, **** references, *** violence, etc. For those that can handle that, it only adds to the greatness of the album, because it offers a startling glimpse inside the artist's head that you don't get with all the other tired "gangsta rap" crap that is out there.
Song reviews:
1. Public Service Announcement 2000 - It's a skit.
2. **** You - Funny, but the raps in the middle are not quite as catchy as many of the other songs on the album. The hook is great. If you don't agree with me, I "will f!%#ing **** you!" (Rating: 8.5/10)

Former A Tribe Called Quest MC Phife Dawg admirably takes a back-to-basics approach on his first solo foray, clearly reveling in his lone wolf status. "Should never have let me off the damn leash," he gleefully exclaims on "Flawless," a track which directs thinly veiled barbs at a certain vivrant former bandmate. However, a full-length tirade against former associates isn't on the agenda as Phife primarily voices his dissatisfaction with style-over-substance in hip-hop, and he isn't in the mood to bite his tongue. With Tribe's plush melodic compositions no longer cushioning his flow, the five-footer goes all out, dropping authoritative critiques on "Alphabet Soup" and "D.R.U.G.S.," both helmed by ascendant producer Hi-Tek. Aside from his usual marauding, canine inclinations ("Ben Dova"), Phife tries to infuse conceptual breadth through storytelling ventures with mixed results. Even though his ambitious lyrical attempts don't always work, his skills are matched and enlivened by supreme beat-layers such as Pete Rock ("Melody Adonis"), but when attached to underwhelming microphone assistance on posse cuts and bland production, things begin to falter. Fortunately, this is hardly the overwhelming scenario, and Phife's intact skills prove he's definitely not ready to be muzzled yet. --Del F. CowieAlbum Details

Legendary Solo Effort.......2006-01-30
Solid effort from a real MC.......2005-11-11
On the other hand, Phife made a mistake with some songs like "Ben Dova" or "The Club Hoppa" lyrically wise because he totally contradicts himself on these songs. I'm all with denouncing commercial/materialistic/dumb Hip Hop, but he comes himself with some of that sh*t right after saying that he's fed up with it. This type of contradiction had me scratching my head. But actually this may not come so much as a downfall after all since, like I said before, partying and having sex is a part of Phife's character which he couldn't express in a group like Tribe because he had to limit his lyrics' subjects and the clean and spiritual style of the group. So as long as we're talking about just one or two songs (every album has a weakness), there's really no problem with that.
The No Name feature on "4 Horsemen" was truly laughable but I can understand why Phife did it, they come from the same place, grew up together and Phife decided to let them shine a little on his solo album, I would've done the same with my homies so I can't be mad at him (by the way, Phife's verse is deadly on this song, real sharp).
Anyway, besides very few disappointments, MOST of the lyrics are ill, Phife has always been one of the best MCs in the game, easily one of the best ever, and this album is just another proof of the superiority of his talent, he handles words with a lot of ease, and even if some of the subjects are not as deep as we could have expected, the skills are definitely still there and show up on most tracks. Try to listen to today's rappers like 50 Cent & Co after listening to Ventilation, you'll see the difference, Phifey clearly rules.
And now, the beats. Great. Anybody who says that the beats were wack on this album must be crazy. They PERFECTLY fit Phife's style, they're raw, soulful, boom-bap style, and stick perfectly to the overall message and spirit of the album: Real Hip Hop still exists. Again, the beats evolved a little bit since his Tribe days but you can always trust a production team composed of Pete Rock, Hi-Tek and Jay Dee amongst others. Even "Ben Dova" or "Club Hoppa", if their lyrics can disappoint, the beats are dope, and never commercial or radio-friendly. REAL HIP HOP FROM START TO FINISH.
And I don't even mention songs like "Beats, Rhymes & Phife", a biography in which Diggy tells us how he fell in love with Hip Hop and how he made it to the top, the Pete Rock laced "Melody Adonis", an ode to the love of his life (beautiful, arguably the best song on the album) or even "Alphabet Soup", with Mutty Ranks dropping knowledge.
At the end of the day, Phife comes with more than a solo album, it's an individual album, where he revealed some aspects of his character we didn't necessarily know, while keeping it real with sharp and clever lyrics, dope beats and most importantly: LOVE. Go cop it!
Predictable, Disappointing, and Boring (2.5 Stars).......2004-09-15
1) Butter - (from "The Low End Theory" LP '91)
2) 8 Million Stories - (from the "Midnight Marauders" LP '93)
3) Baby Phife's Return - (from the "Beats Rhymes & Life" LP '96)
4) His Name Is Muddy Ranks - (from "The Love Movement" LP '98)
These songs are all tight, and it could be argued that "8 Million Stories" and "Butter" are classic joints. With that being said, "Ventalation: Da LP" is a subpar release from a dope MC. There are so many reasons for the LP being a faliure.
Like other reviewers have pointed out, the first thing to stand out is the overuse of curse words. In my mind, cursing takes away from skills because anyone can make a curse word rhyme. It takes more skill to rhyme without cursing and I think that's one of the things that made ATCQ so appealing. Don't get me wrong, Tribe did curse from time to time, but Phife curses so much that I had to check the credits to make sure Richard Pryor didn't write the lyrics.
Another reason the CD is boring is because Phife hasn't improved lyrically. These are the same rhymes that you'll hear on any ATCQ LP...but with more swearing. That lack of improvement (or decline in skills depending on your view) makes at least 70% of this CD skippable.
Another reason to come to mind is the suspect production and the number of wack joints on the album. Supa Dav West needs to stick to singing because his production is suspect. I was even more shocked to hear such subpar production from Pete Rock on "Lemme Find Out". I'd have to say that "Ben Dova", "Miscellaneous" and "Lemme Find Out" are straight wack. "4 Horseman (192 N' It)" has a tight beat (courtesy of Jay Dee), but Phife and the aptly named trio No Name totally wasted it with some of the wackest lyrics I've heard since Vanilla Ice. Even the hook sucks: "This I'm holdin' down for Linden Bully like what / runnin' through life and not givin' a f*ck / gotta get your paper / nevermind these sluts / they ain't goin' nowhere / we can always get butt". It gets no sadder than that.
There are some good tracks on this album though. "Alphabet Soup" and "Flawless" are good, but they come off as skippable. "Tha Club Hoppa" reminds me of the ATCQ Phife that handled business on the previously mentioned solo joints. And then there are certified bangers like "D.R.U.G.S." (produced by Hi Tek) and "Melody Adonis" where Pete Rock redeems himself with a tight beat and Phife actually uses it well.
Overall, I'd have to say that this CD is somewhat dissappointing. The beats were suspect and Phife might've lost a step or two on the mic. If you're an ATCQ fan that was expecting more of the same on his solo joint, then you'll get most of the lyrics you're looking for, but most of the beats won't do anything for you. I'd only reccomend this to collectors that have everything else associated with Native Tongue / ATCQ.
Standout Tracks: Alphabet Soup, Flawless, Ventilation, Tha Club Hoppa, and D.R.U.G.S. (My Favorite)

Daz's Best Solo Effort.......2006-09-10
The best g funk song I've heard from the new millennium, "That's The Way We Ride," is a real classic. Daz assembles a song in 2005 like he's back in 1995. DJ Easy Dicc is in the house of course, welcoming us back to a world where "Ain't No Fun" and "21 Jumpstreet" were the anthems to blaze. It's like neither he nor Daz has even left, like g funk hasn't fallen from the mainstream: "Who got the west coast sound that your always wantin'/Dogg Pound Gangstas, we still G-Funkin'" This song is nuts. The funky piano, the soft synths and random percussions in the background, coming in at all parts of the song. Unlike popular rap today, the beat is always changing, always challenging us. Shorty B helps out with the addictive hook and much like Daz's other fantastic production "21 Jumpstreet" our DJ takes two callers at the end while the amazing beat just keeps on flowin.'
Daz goes romantic on "Come Close" a laid-back one with Nate Dogg again coming through. "Nigga Gotta Hustle It Up" is another laid-back one, a bit better than Come Close despite the absence of a real crooner like Nate. The closest one to a classic is "Nothin' Can Stop Us Now'" featuring George Clinton. Guess what that means? It's another g funker trying out "(Not Just) Knee Deep," the p-funk classic. But it provides another hit again. It sounds nothing like "Wit Dre Day," "Guerrila Funk," or "Who Am I?" to name a few. Here the sample is sped up a little and different elements are replayed in a different way. The hook created is nothing short of masterful. Upbeat and addictive, this one's perfect for parties. In the song, Daz takes us down memory lane, boasting about his many hits from back in the day. George Clinton even comes in at the end with some pseudo-philosophical words, much like he did on Pac's "Can't C Me". Near classic right there.
Other songs worth mentioning are "Do U Know," another nice slow one, "Do U Think About," not a bad effort that unfortunately uses the same sample as "Keep Ya Head Up," one of the best rap songs ever. "Hey How Ya Doin'" is a really interesting one, with an eerie g funk beat that is more along Warren's lines. The hard "My Momma Said" and "Tha Dogg Pound Gangsta" round out the list of good/okay songs. All in all this album is a success. Daz mentions the past, but doesn't seem bitter at all. Instead, he seems happy just staying true to what worked for so long. And it definitely works here. 4.5

Best LP.......2006-12-19
Despite the cursing and wierd topics, there are plenty of good tracks that everyone can relate to is they just listen.
