5 out of 5 stars Awesome to hear the old masters almost live........2007-03-27

It was an awesome experience to hear Ragtime and early blues played by the masters themselves. When you hear the music from their own hands, if not their own pianos, it makes the music immediate, and makes even clearer the stylistic differences of the various American musical pioneers. The sound quality is excellent. I'd strongly recommend this recording to anyone who enjoys early-20th-century jazz.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Ragtime of the Century.......2005-10-30

What a terrific CD. What a joy to add to your life. Everyone should begin their day with this Great Ragtime. We would all be much better.

As a former dancer, Flapper, wth the Charleston in my routine, I do appreciate Great Music. I'm not quite as good as I used to be, but neither are you, Gal. Will be 66 next birthday. Still have the rhythm and love life.

Put some spice in your life and don't let this CD get away. Please, just get it today.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction and sampling........2005-08-23

Prior to this album, the only ragtime I really knew was "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag". I don't know how this album fares for enthusiasts, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It introduced me to several different composers. The way the album is organized by giving you a two or three song block by each composer is good. As you listen to this, you can easily hear the different styles from one composer to another. As for the recording quality, I don't have any complaints whatsoever. Each note is clear without much noticable fuzz or hissing. The versions of Scott Joplin's songs are played a bit brash and speedy when compared to Joshua Rifkin, but I think they sound livlier because of it. Overall a solid release.

5 out of 5 stars One of Too $hort's most underrated albums.......2007-05-10

The opinion on this album seems to be divided between those who think it's fantastic and those who think it's only merely ok. I think the reason certain people don't enjoy it because they just don't understand what makes it so great. This is a slower paced, more laid back Too $hort than before, and it's a very unique release from the Oakland pimp. While it's not his best - those honors go to 'Cocktails' and 'Short Dog's in the House', it's among it, and he should have definitely retired with this one.

'Gettin' It' opens with a song of the same name, and it just gets better from here. On 'Surviving the Game' Short Dog sounds very frank and angry, and it makes it a great track. 'That's Why', 'Pimp Me', and 'Buy You Some' are some of the best songs on here, and 'Baby D' is a special track featuring the talented young rapper of the same name (whatever happened to him anyway?). There's not a single bad track on here, though 'Never Talk Down' is mediocre and sounds like filler. Otherwise, this is a well produced effort that belongs in your collection. However, you may or may not understand what makes this one so great and why it's different from any other release by Too $hort.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Solid.......2006-10-24

I'd say from all of his pre-retirement albums this is about #5. I'd def. go with the pre '96 albums from Short Dog as he is the representation of the old school funk. So get this album it is still pretty dope

3 out of 5 stars Album "#10" maybe my least favorite of his .......2005-11-17

16 months after his last album (my 2nd favorite of his) $hort is back with his last album before "retirement". Gladly he came out as of the 11 $hort albums I own this may be my least favorite and it be a shame if he retired after this. With 13 songs, none are near classic amterial, 1 I skip, 6 are ok and the rest are good, not great. Guests are on all but 3 songs, and $hort ain't even on 2 of them!! Production isn't near as funky as his early 1990's and 1980's stuff that made us all love him, but it is still decent, just not GREAT like his earlier releases. Shorty B does 5 songs, Colin Wolfe does 3, Ant Banks does 2 and Spearhead X, MC Breed and LA Dre all do 1 song. A good album for his fans to have but far from the man's best work.

5 out of 5 stars last album...? yes, last before the game got switched.......2005-06-09

if you dont have this album after d*mn near 10 years in release then DONT BUY IT. your just bored. minnesota loves TOO $HORT...all the the way to album #10 getting it. i dont wanna hate, but being honest about it, this is the last credible album from short dogg. he claims to have retired after it, but came back with "cant stay away" and starting using mainstream guest spots and not so funky beats. ill always be a fan but nowadays his albums and songs are real hit and miss. ps~ bring back goldy, fm blue, rappin ron, mahly mall, pee wee, baby d and the rest of the DANGEROUS CREW....?

5 out of 5 stars The definition of a classic!.......2004-12-30

What a way to go out!! See, after this album Too $hort was about to retire. Actually he didn't record any solo albums untill his big comeback in 1999. And he hasn't stopped since then. But this isn't about now, it's about his 1996 album "Gettin' It". And what an album it was. Short Dog was making sure his 10th album would be a classic! And he didn't dissapoint, making this another PERFECT album, from beginning to the end. In terms of lyrics and flows, it's Short Dog at his best. Of course most of his raps are about pimping and being a playa, but he also adresses some social issues as well, talking about what's going on in the ghetto and also talking about the rap game, representing Oakland to the fullest. And the beats are top notch, some of that Dangerous Music funk, with some of the hardest bass-lines you'll ever hear (just listen to track no. 7, after 3:24 minutes into it... you'll understand!). Production is handled by Ant Banks, Shorty B, Too $hort, MC Breed, LA Dre and others. Guest appearences by MC Breed, Erick Sermon, Goldy, Rappin' 4-Tay, Funkadlic Parliament, Kool Ace... It's a classic Too $hort album , just an album you'll enjoy without skipping a track (unlike those weak ass albums maistream rappers come out with these days). Too $hort shows on this one that he's still the best at what he does, he's still a pioneer and one of the realest rappers out there. [Oh, and by the way, you'll hear Luniz disses all over the album! :)] Get this album, if you're a fan of Bay Area rap, even though any REAL rap fan should enjoy this masterpiece!

4 out of 5 stars Ronnie sings like a country boy at heart.......2005-10-26

Playing Time - 44:52 -- I just finished listening to Curly Seckler's "That Old Book of Mine," and now Ronnie Bowman's new project is spinning. Boy, has bluegrass evolved within just the course of a few decades. There's the rustic mountain side, but there's also an urbane and more refined contemporary side. Both types have their own elegance and sophistication. Ronnie Bowman sings like a country boy at heart, and he actually does hail from North Carolina and Virginia. Music's been an enormous part of his life ever since he first started singing with his parents and four sisters in "The Bowman Gospel Singers." He became a professional bluegrass musician when he joined The Lost and Found in 1987. By 1990, he was the lead singer with The Lonesome River Band. His first solo album in 1994 climbed to #1 on the BU Top 30 chart. The 1995, 1998 and 1999 IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year is also a fantastic songwriter. You may recall award-winners like "Cold Virginia Rain," "The Healing Kind," and "Three Rusty Nails." Country musicians Dan Seals, Brooks and Dunn, and others have recorded his songs.

Just like Curly Seckler's tenor was many years ago, Ronnie Bowman's bluegrass voice is a defining one of our time today. Combined with stellar instrumental support and an enchanting repertoire of fresh material, Ronnie hits a homerun right out of the park. His musical companions include Wyatt Rice (guitar), Dan Tyminski or Adam Steffey (mandolin), Andy Hall (dobro), Steve Thomas (fiddle), Dave Talbot (banjo), Dave Pomeroy (bass). "The Epitaph of Lester Moore" has the assistance of Del, Ronnie and Rob McCoury. "It's Getting' Better All the Time" is leanly arranged with just Ronnie singing with John Jarvis' piano and strings. With a little more acoustic country emphasis, we really only hear banjo on three songs ("Crazy Train" and "The Epitaph of Lester Moore" and "Walkin' the Dog"). The latter features the banjo-picking of Don Wayne Reno, fiddle bowing of Jeremy Garrett, and Mike Anglin's vocal. I wish that a couple numbers (e.g. "Perfect Love") might've also included some five-string, but thank you Ronnie, for not incorporating drums or percussion into your music. In most arrangements, Ronnie sings both lead and tenor vocals. High baritone harmonies are beautifully rendered by Garnet Imes-Bowman.

Eight of the eleven songs were penned or co-penned by Bowman. In his songs, he exhibits a natural inclination to set the stage, pull you into the stories, and impart evocative messages. His melodies and attention-grabbing lyrics flow smoothly. The lines all sound so correctly assembled. With this amount of original material, I wish that the CD jacket would have included lyrics. Many of us benefit from being able to use both our auditory and visual senses when contemplating such beautiful lyrics as Bowman's. Covers come from Hugh Moffatt ("Old Flames"), Larry Rice ("Four Wheel Drive") and E.M and W.C. Grimsley ("Walkin' the Dog"). With both country and bluegrass overtones, it's clearly "getting' better all the time" for vocalist Ronnie Bowman. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

First of all, y'all needa get y'all facts straight. This wasn't no new album for 99 just a re-realese of Fly's undaground album. He added one track, too (F_ck a Wannabe).

secondly, Fly is validated in making the Triple [...] Mafia song. 'Cause that's what they is. They used to be hard, but they sold out, and now they commercialized and part of the got damn system. Fly said it himself...it wasn't 'bout no paper or time or anything...he just thought that was [...] and exposed them for that. That simple

Third of all, this album is bumpin' as hell and is a classic like all of Fly's albums. This is either his best or second best album, and he comes hard all tha damn time. Plus, guests like Gangsta Blac, Lil' Ced, Lil' Yo, V-Dog, and more make this album one that you gotta listen to.

PS Fly back on lock down, but MAFIA ALL DAY still gon come out. Cop it when it drops.

This 1994 recording was McBride's debut as a leader, and it consolidated his place as the most eminent bassist of the mainstream youth movement. His big sound, relaxed time-feel, and keen harmonic sense all hearken back to the great bass players of the '50s, and his adroit bowed solos can recall the work of Paul Chambers. McBride has assembled some of his most talented peers here in various permutations, forming a tight rhythm unit with drummer Lewis Nash and inspiring strong contributions from trumpeter Roy Hargrove, tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman, trombonist Steve Turre, and pianist Cyrus Chestnut. Together they invoke many of the moods of classic modern jazz, from Chestnut's elegance to Redman's rambunctious energy. Neal Hefti's "Splanky," a staple of the Basie book, gets an unusual workout from a bass trio with Ray Brown and Milt Hinton, McBride holding his own with members of the bass pantheon. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gettin' to the New Generation.......2001-12-28

Hey, you lovers of Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Paul Chambers,Ron Carter, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Oscar Peterson, Miles, Coltrane, et al: round out your collections of yesteryear's jazz giants, and then take heart, because there's a whole new posse in town. And this cd is a great place to start.

What a marvelous collection of young talent. Certainly, the cd belongs to McBride. He shows himself to be an extremely talented composer (The Shade of the Cedar Tree, Black Moon, Gettin'to It) and an already accomplished bass man. His solo interpretation of the great Night Train is audacious, confident, and attention getting.

McBride, however, doesn't hog the spotlight. Pianist Cyrus Chestnut is bluesy, tender, boppish, and extremely supportive.
Roy Hargrove and Joshua Redman take their turns on trumpet and sax respectively and go a long way in bringing this strong material to life. Young trombonist Steve Turre even sits in on a couple numbers and wields that unwieldy instrument with detexerity and determination. And Lewis Nash on the drums holds everything and everyone together.

A few of the pieces feature McBride, Chestnut, and Nash in trio; a few more add brass or reed to the mix, and one cut--Splanky-- consists of only three bass players: McBride, Milt Hinton, and Ray Brown. That cut, along with McBride's solo work on Night Train, makes you wish these bassmen would get together for an all-bass outing.

Young lions, and two old giants--Hinton and Brown-- come together here in a way that makes you optimistic for the future, where the likes of Kenny G and "smooth" jazz can scare the life (and other things) out of you. Hinton and Brown seem pretty comfortable and confident here. You will, too. Get to Gettin' to It.

5 out of 5 stars Great debut album...great bassist........2001-02-14

A fantastic debut for Christian as leader. Plus 6 of these songs are his own compositions which really prove his song writing skills. Joined here by first class musicians...Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Steve Turre, Cyrus Chestnut and Lewis Nash, this album is sizzling. Plus the wonderful bass trio of Christian, and the legends Ray Brown and Milt Hinton on "Splanky", make this a must have album for any jazz lover. And Christian sounds exactly how he wanted to on "Night Train", which he plays completely solo. As he states in the liner notes, he only worked it out 15 minutes before recording, and he simply wanted it to sound as low down, gritty, nasty, and funky as possible. Well, it does, and is absolutely brilliant. Every song on this album is fantastic, I can't rate it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars How good is this guy?.......2000-02-03

This is a great CD. The first just kicks you right in the face and after that it never lets up. "Gettin' To It" has a great feel. Christian is to jazz today what guys like Paul Chambers and Ray Brown were to jazz back in the day.

4 out of 5 stars Getting into it is easy to get into..........1999-05-14

Great album with a breadth of musical styles and tones. Every song is seriously tight and crisp, yet he avoids sounding merely like a technician. It's a special treat too to hear Joshua Redman on this album. Splanky is my favorite track: it's a all-bass number with Christian, Milt Hinton, and ray brown. Worth the whole album just for this one track...IMHO.

4 out of 5 stars Great Cd which mixes jazz sounds........1999-01-20

This is a great cd. Christian McBride has always played great jazz, but this time he is joined by Joshua Redman, Lewis Nash, and others to create a wonderful mood. Some tracks include a five piece band, while others like Night Train, are McBride solo tracks. Splanky is a song which features an awesome bass trio doing solo's over a nice blues line. I suggest you get this album immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Gettin' with it.......2005-09-07

This was the third of three albums Benny Golson made for Prestige in 1959, and it is every bit as good as the first two. The version of APRIL IN PARIS that goes down here is among the prettiest on record. BOB HURD'S BLUES, taken medium-slow and at 12 minutes, gives everyone a chance to stretch out. Golson has a very warm, appealing sound on tenor, an excellent contrast to Curtis Fuller's rather gruff trombone sound. Tommy Flanagan is on piano and to my ears, Mr. Flanagan can do no wrong. A very solid hard bop recording date. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars Another gem in the row.......2005-02-07

Another super cool album from Benny Golson. This one is from 1959. The team consists in Benny, Curtis Fuller trombone, Tommy Flanagan piano, Doug Watkins bass, Arthur Taylor drums. These albums from the late fifties are the records that every jazz enthusiast should own. They are so cool it's ridicolous. People unaware about the history of Jazz music generally tend to buy the same old super famous things. Miles' Kind of blue, Trane's A love supreme, Brubeck's Time out, Chet Baker singing stuff, Jarrett's Koln concert. Fews are so committed to search deep inside the history of jazz music to discover something different but of equal importance and quality. This blowing session from Benny and the guys is something that helps to define what Jazz is. A super cool record from the best period in the history of jazz music. Benny and Curtis Fuller form a spectacular front line. They complement each other perfectly. The Flanagan trio comps impeccably. This music is still modern, almost fifty years later. This quintet has the sense of time and the super cool attitude only the greatest combos in Jazz had the privilege to own.

5 out of 5 stars Get With This!.......2000-07-07

Benny Golson is one of the most under appreciated tenor players of the 50s and 60s. Blue Note never signed him to a recording contract (though they should have!), but felt him talented enough to arrange Lee Morgan's early albums for the label among other things. Golson's Prestige/New Jazz albums can be counted with the best hard bop of the era, and "Gettin' With It" in particular sounds like a Jazztet album without Art Farmer, but better. By that I mean, the Jazztet tends to write very succinct, lovely nuggets of songs, which is great but sometimes the solos feel a tad constrained. On Golson's solo efforts however, the songs are still well constructed, yet he has room to stretch out. This is most evident on the terrific "Bob Hurd's Blues" which logs in at over 12 minutes. Golson's Jazztet mate Curtis Fuller joins him on this album, along with a rhythm section of Tommy Flanagan, Doug Watkins and Art Taylor -- all in top form. One final note, this CD is an OJC "Limited Edition" but it has been available for years now. Even though these limited editions hang around longer than Blue Note's Connoisseurs, don't mess around with this one's availability -- get with it soon.

5 out of 5 stars Is there anything James Brown couldn't do?.......2007-05-28

This is a very cool project. Mr. Brown is singing a few standards, as well as giving some of his hits a new twist. If you're a fan of the Godfather, you gotta have this!

3 out of 5 stars Tha Jazzy Side Of The Godfather........2006-01-02

This is an incredible jazz album put out by Verve records. I didn't think it'd turn out to be this great as I've never had a copy of the vinyl of this one. To all who are familiar with James Brown and do not dislike jazz--you will LOVE this. Not one song is skippable. The jazz version of 'Cold Sweat' on here is amazing.

4 out of 5 stars JB After Hours?.......2005-10-07

The title of this Verve-King reissue suggests the expected funk and fire of James Brown during his 1967-73 period of ascendence, indeed the title is shouted during "Cold Sweat", his only (recognizable) vocal on a very familiar JB classic, but the song titles suggest a much quieter, introspective side, and quieter it is: with the Dee Felice Trio. [A mellow, jazz-inflected back-up gig with Brown on "Playboy After Dark" comes to mind].
Last year Verve gave us "Soul On Top" - ofcourse Jazz and Soul, but in a "Big Band" setting. Here...a small band. And it works.
The highlight is the opener - "Sunny" - with JB harmonizing up a storm with Marva Whitney. This is his only released version (apparently issued on CD only one time before on an Australian collection). The intro. is slow, voices in a whisper; then into the verse with a passion. No screams here...just Soul in a different light. [Not long after this issue, it appears Brown introduced the song as a set-list piece. It's been written that it remains an unissued track from the "Love, Power, Peace" set from '71].
"That's Life" is very subdued compared to the version heard on a couple of 1968 TV Specials; although the two released Apollo versions were more in the "Gettin' Down..." vein. Some nice improvizations on this one. Nothing to return to very often but well worth hearing.
"All The Way" is tremendous. This is perhaps his most *controlled* vocal...ever. On The Louis Bellson album mentioned above there are occasional uncomfortable sudden shifts in the decibel level and the track as a whole suffers. On this cut a great singer gets a chance to stretch and invites the initiated to relax and enjoy the change of pace.
The mix is fine, however, I would have preferred a bit more echo on most of the numbers; also a slower tempo in a lower key, here and there.
This is an important release. It also serves as a reminder to the historians collectors that there's still plenty of never-on-CD JB in the files, including some titles that a Jazz-Blues label like Verve might not touch, namely "Live At The Garden", an incredible live set at a New Jersey venue. Let's hope this notable set begets a few items not exactly similiar in content but in...Soul!!!

    4 out of 5 stars KOOL!.......2002-06-25

The songs on this cd are mostly not up to par with her moderate commerical sucess in 1996 "PAPER CHASIN'". However ," GETTIN' IT" should be enjoyed by people how liked the two albums from H.W.A.,MIA X, SYLK E.FYNE and GANGSTA BOO aka LADY BOO. SIGNED MUSIC FAN.

1 out of 5 stars Fed up and Sic Wid It..........2002-04-30

This has to be worst album produced by the Sic Wid It family (aka "the Click"). The music was so garbage it was difficult to pay attention to the lyrics. The only saving grace about this album is cover shot!

    3 out of 5 stars Okay.............2000-10-18

Suga T is a fine woman. She can flow and her tempo blends with the beats. Best cuts in the album are " Ridin til da wheels off', Super Bad Bi*#h, Ghetto Love and Party Up. Overall, its a solid effort.
