Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall burst onto the public consciousness last year with her gritty debut album Eye to the Telescope, a provocative sonic mesh of heartfelt pop, rootsy, electric blues, and left-field alt-rock. Eye spawned three hit singles — the Grammy-Award nominated "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree," "Suddenly I See," and "Other Side of the World" — all of which became omnipresent on radio, television, movies, and the Internet. Thanks to the multi-media exposure, Eye is certified platinum in the U.S., with worldwide sales exceeding 3.5 million copies.

Now Tunstall is readying her follow-up, entitled Drastic Fantastic, which will be released by Virgin Records on September 18th, 2007. It showcases the 31-year-old's growth as both a songwriter and musician on songs like the thumping "Hold On," the rollicking "Saving My Face," the jazz-inflected "Someday Soon," and the frisky pop gem "I Don't Want You Now." "I wanted to be braver," Tunstall says of the album. "I wanted to push the musicality. You can't let previous success scare you away from moving on."

3 out of 5 stars not really kansas, but an incredible simulation.......2007-07-10

This album was a bit different than any of their other releases. This is the second album they put out after the original line up went their separate ways.

I had this for a long time on cassette and wasn't really surprised that a CD didn't come out for a long time. It eventually did of course and I snagged this up right away, along with Vinyl Confessions.

This album is not their best. However, as with all terrible albums, there are still a few good songs here. Fight Fire With Fire is hard rocking, and its still played in shows to this day, I believe.
Everybody's My Friend is pretty lame with equally bad lyrics. Mainstream is one of the better songs here and has a great middle section. Andi is my vote for the WORST KANSAS SONG EVER!!
Going Through the Motions is a nice idea lyrically and this song isn't too bad really. Get Rich is an obvious and blatant attempt at writing a song like Song For America or No One Together and falls flat on its face in the process.

Don't Take your Love Away is a power ballad that is almost laughable. End of the Age is another one of the good songs, both musically and lyrically. Ironically enough, all the good songs here were penned by Livgren.
Incident on a Bridge is a decent song too and a good way to end this album.

So we have 9 songs here. 5 are in the OK/good range, 3 of them are terrible and 1 is the worst song these guys ever did. Do you like those odds? This is for the hardcore fan only, or for those of you who want to take a bet than you'll like part of this. 3 stars for this one.

3 out of 5 stars Kansas - John Elefante Takes Over.......2007-06-27

"Drastic Measures" had the unique distinction to be the first Kansas album without a violin. Founding member Robbie Steinhardt left (or was fired) prior to this album and the band moved on as a 5 piece unit. In the end the album would be the last from the John Elefante era of the band. Kansas would basically cease to exist for more than a decade after this album and tour. John Elefante (and his songwriting partner, brother Dino) really comes to the fore on this disc writing the lion's share of the material. Many of the songs deal with the impact of sudden fame. Kerry Livgren only contributes three songs all in the with mainly Christian oriented lyrics. The single "Fight Fire With Fire" was a great rocker and managed to get both radio and MTV airplay. I also like "Everybody's My Friend", and "Mainstream" the longest track on the disc. The rest is all pleasant enough, but does not come close to what the band had previosly achieved. Overall for Kansas fans it is worth owning, but if you are a more casual fan there are many other albums that I would purchase prior to this one.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding ... shoot... I guess... Progressive pop?.......2007-06-06

This is one of the few albums I repurchased on CD long after I owned it on tape. Since the Essential Kansas box set ignores this album completely, this is a MUST BUY in the same Amazon cart with that collection. If only for the first three songs.

The catchiness on this one is up there for a band like Kansas. That is why I want to call it "Progressive Pop" which is hardly an insult. The first five songs are amazing.

If you are fan of Hold Your Fire era Rush you will IMO enjoy this.

4 out of 5 stars Do not let this get away........2007-03-29

I want go on and on I just want anyone debating to buy this CD to buy this underrated and worthy disc. Every song is memorable and infectious and what more can you ask for in a CD.

      2 out of 5 stars Weak attempt........2006-10-12

I think that Shawn Sutherlands review is most accurate. This is NOT by any stretch a KANSAS album. Being a avid Kansas fan since the beginning I was reluctant to purchase this last CD because I knew/felt that it is what it is, mostly a John Elefante solo production. I did pick it up to complete my Kansas CD collection. After hearing it I realized that I could have done without it. Even with the earlier release of Vinyl Confessions, the Elefante Brothers had changed the sound of what was Kansas. This cd took the sound even further from what was the signature prog rock sound one of the most instrumentally minded rock bands today. So much was missing from this production. Robbie Steinhardt's presence is obviously missing...no stinging violin...means no Kansas..!! Kerry Livgrens lyrical input was minimal, only contributing three tracks. Quite a change from the norm when he was the primary song writer along with Steve Walsh. One reviewer stated that he could not tell the difference between Steve Walsh and John Elefante. I would suggest that this person listen very carefully to the ealier albums...MASQUE, IN THE SPIRIT OF THINGS, POINT OF KNOW RETURN and of course LEFTOVERTURE. Steve Walsh IS the Voice of Kansas. What has John Elefante done outside of Kansas...i'm not sure but I do not think that KANSAS......will be his legacy. Go for the earlier albums...!!!

5 out of 5 stars If I had to describe this album in one line............2005-10-06

...it would be, "post punk, pre new wave, English science-fiction pop rock". Personally, this is one of my favorite albums of all time, probably due to the wonderful discoveries of adolescence. But even then, I had a hard time falling in love with a couple of these tracks. When this album was released, I was a guitar slinging teenage rocker, rebelling against all things disco and synthesized. Songs like "Electrical Language" and "Japan" (which for some reason is not in Amazon's track listing) just had too much synthesizer for me. I've later come to appreciate these tunes more, which is indicative of "Drastic Plastic" as a whole - a bit of an acquired taste. Bill Nelson's fantastic guitar prowess doesn't so much take a back seat as it does support each song...and the songs are what make this a GREAT album. That's not to say that he doesn't throw down with some fat-toned, heart-felt wickedness that has made him one of the world's best unknown guitarists (except those already in the know). These tunes are what I call "cream-of-the-crop pop". Every song is filled with catchy hooks that not only keep you listening, but stay in your head long after the stereo power button is turned off. "Panic in the World" is the best example because it's simple and catchy. The only problem is that Mr. Nelson crams so many words in some of the lines that it's hard to make out the words, but that is also one of the endearing quirks. And compared to much of Be bop's prior releases, it is more "quirky" - "left of center".
"Superenegmatix" is a nod to early punk rock (which when this was released, punk WAS early), "Dangerous Stranger" is reminiscent of Nick Lowe, "New Mysteries" musically brings to my mind a futuristic, mechanical, marching army, and "Island of the Dead", is a morbid love ballad. There is a lot of ground that Be Bop Deluxe covers on Drastic Plastic. I have not heard the unreleased tracks yet, but the price of admission is well worth the listening experience.

3 out of 5 stars Great Title, but Disappointing.......2005-08-28

Drastic Plastic. The title suggests something new and fantastic. Well, there is one stellar track on this album...Panic in the World. The sound created here was a precursor to sounds that would become more popular in the early 1980s: great guitar, synthesizer, brooding vocals. Great stuff.
The rest of the album, unfortunately, is not very coherent. Kind of interesting, but just not quite finished. I tried to like this record, but couldn't find a way. Of course, this was the final album for Bill Nelson and Be Bop Deluxe. Maybe that explains the many shortcomings, which I really didn't expect after the genius of Sunburst Finish and other earlier material.
Panic in the World has always been a favorite of mine and it still appears on many playlists today. If you like that sound, pick up Graham Parker's, Another Grey Area [1982]. The sound is a little more punchy, the vocals a bit more strained, but similar.
It's nice to see Drastic Plastic reissued, if only for Panic in the World. Just don't expect to be blown away.

Really awesome mix of jungle and hip hop music. I read about it in a few magazines and decided to pick it up after listening to it at my friends house. I love the hip hop raps over the drum and bass beats. My favorite tracks are the Kool Keith and Wizone song, the song with Bahamadia, and the song with Kingsize. Really cool.

          5 out of 5 stars Mostly Magic.......2004-04-26

This album is an interesting combination of Michael Manring's own compositions and some interesting covers (Sting - Spirits in the Material World, Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze, and Chick Corea - 500 Miles High). Almost everything is 'Soft Jazz.' Sometimes a bit too soft - sometimes the album slips away from you and suddenly it's several cuts later.

Still, it is very much the sort of thing I like. Peaceful, for the most part, with some very interesting displays of technique (see Purple Haze). Keep in mind when you are listening that there are not other guitars other than the basses. Paul McCandless does a superb job on several solos, especially his oboe on Oyasumi Nasai and the sax solo on Deja Voodoo.

Manring allows his bass playing to take a larger part than he does on many of his albums, but keeps it from dominating the music, which makes for a good balance. I find that the more you listen to the album, the more you find in it, and the more you like it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Bass Album.......2003-10-25

this has got to be one of my most favorite albums, in the early 90's i actually bought 2 casette copies of it, one i wanted to preserve and the the other i played till the player bled.

Michael Manring, is one of players who are able to mesh in awesome technique with out compromising the soul of a song, this album speaks to your emotion yet will baffle you with how much technical skill is used.

          kudos Mike.

On this album, the Transcontinental Saxophone Quartet really puts forth a recording of some great pieces in the saxophone repertoire. Their ensemble musicianship is quite good and very well rehearsed. This album is simply a great recording for anyone looking to get some saxophone quartet into thier music library.

The first piece is Mountain Roads by big name wind composer David Maslanka. The piece is a series of movements of reworkings of Bach chorales. The piece is absolutely wonderful. The melodies float and soar and are full of American nostalgia. Maslanka's reworkings are absolutely gorgeous and the quartet just exhibits fantastic technical skill and musicianship in the ensemble. The lyrical melodies and rich harmonies are just absolutely magical. The compositional skill of Maslanka and the quartet's fabulous execution are both very evident from the beauty of the recording of this wonderful work that accounts for about half of the album.

The next piece on the album is David Frederick Stock's "Sax Appeal." While this piece is more grounded in pop music and American influence, the quartet still does a fabulous job to make this piece work. The second movement, "Blues" is a little cheesy but the third movement "Sarabande" has both some very beautiful and exciting moments in it. The last movement is absolutely jarring. The piece ends with a fury of notes and creative harmonies. While this piece is not as strong as the title cut, it still makes a fine addition on this great recording.

Finally, the disc closes with Russell Peck's "Drastic Measures." The piece opens with a slow, haunting melody that leads into a beautiful floating exposed wash of sound. The harmonic colors in this piece are absolutely gorgeous. The piece builds marvelously. However, feel like the first movement builds too quickly and would really like to hear more of the material that we got right at the beginning. It also trails of at the end a little bit too long but the haunting chord that we hear at the end is absolutely wonderful. The second and final movement of the piece is quite spritely and fun. We hear some slap tounging and great fast motion. However, there is some blues influence which seems all too cliche in a saxophone quartet. The excitement in the Allegro movement is just infectious though. Once again, the blend and the musicality in the ensemble is just fantastic.

I really love the sound of the orchestration in a saxophone quartet. I wish it more exposed in the classical music world. Unfortunately, it seems that there is too much cliche jazz influence in the repertoire. The title piece on this recording is the corner stone of the album. The other two pieces are fine, but nothing to write home about. The recording is worth the Maslanka piece, and if it wasn't on here, I wouldn't have bought it.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful new piece by Maslanka.......2001-05-15

This is a beautiful cd starting out with a new quartet by David Maslanka and is the six-movement Mountain Roads the cd is named after. The movements are based on Maslanka's study of Bach chorales, and he includes two chorale melodies around which the piece revolve. This piece was commissioned by the Transcontinental Saxophone Quartet, who also premiered it.

The second piece, Sax Appeal, was commissioned by the Amherst Saxophone quartet. It is a lively four movement piece inspired by the jazz idiom.

Russell Peck's Drastic Measures is based upon a three-note figure at the beginning of the piece. It later goes on to include elements such as slap-tonguing.

Overall, the performance of the Transcontinental Saxophone Quartet is very excellent--they blend well together and this is a wonderful cd and a great addition to any collection.

          5 out of 5 stars New Mysteries...............2005-03-12

While some fans may find it's not the best(they have some points)it does jump around, still a good batch considering when it came out. With punk nipping at the heals of any established band at the time I think this is one of my favorites(and I like each one as it pertains to each release in the bands catalogue. The shape of things to come,(wait'l they get a listen to "Sound On Sound"-Hoo Boy!...A Nelsonian then....A Nelsonian now.

3 out of 5 stars Not their best, but not bad by any means.......2004-07-16

This one doesn't hold up as well for me over the years as their earlier 5-STAR studio albums do. There are some decent songs on here, but it seems like they were unsure what direction the band should take. There are hints of New Wave and industrial influences, but the "outtakes" from the Be Bop Deluxe compilations show that they were also flirting with jazz fusion at the time!

In keeping with the New Wave sound, the recording is quite dry, a marked contrast from the liquid, crystalline sound of their earlier work. Sonically, it was a bit of a shock, almost in the same way the dry-sounding "Tormato" was for YES fans. Nonetheless, it's still BBD and Bill Nelson, and if you're a fan, you'll find plenty to like here. It's just not as "essential" as Futurama, Sunburst Finish or Modern Music.

4 out of 5 stars "Drastic Plastic" - Still Vintage Be Bop Deluxe.......2004-03-26

The 1978 release, "Drastic Plastic", was the band's 5th and final studio album. Some critics and fans dismiss this work as weaker Be Bop Deluxe material. I say not so. Though not as artistically powerful and consistent as the classic "Modern Music" and the fine "Sunburst Finish", the band shines brightly on several tracks here. With Bill Nelson taking the band into a little bit harder, a more robotic style and even more sci-fi progressive feel in the music combined with very fine, witty and accomplished lyrical content, songs like "Panic In the World", "Electical Language", "New Precision", "Superenigmatix", "Japan", "Possession" and the fabulous "Islands Of The Dead" still give the band a thumbs up.
Too bad it ended for Be Bop Deluxe after this album. Worth getting this on CD if you can get it!!!!!! Hopefully, somebody will reissue this ---soon please!!!

          3 out of 5 stars Drastic Plastic.......2002-11-16

Hardly the best work by this very musical and (woefully) short-lived band Be Bop Deluxe got onto the fame ladder with "Axe Victim", their '74 debut. With flashy costumery, garish eye makeup and loud rock and roll, Be Bop was initially pegged as a glitter/glam act. Leader Bill Nelson broke up the original band, though, regrouping with bassist Charles Tumehai, percussionist Simon Fox and keyboardist Andrew Clarke, the lineup heard here. When held up to the previous three efforts ("Futurama", "Sunburst Finish" and "Modern Music") "Drastic Plastic" comes up wanting. Nelson, Be Bop Deluxe's guitarist, lead vocalist and only songwriter, was attempting to update the band's sound with then-current production techniques, with mixed results. Where Nelson's earlier songs were catchy and enchanting the material on "Drastic Plastic" is darker and not as immediately accessable; this was one band picked to click but success on a grand scale eluded them and the grind of being an opening act with little or no promotional support had taken its toll by the time they recorded this, their fifth and final studio album (it was followed by "Live! In The Air Age", a superb live album and a greatest-hits package called "The Best Of The Rest").

Not as strong as their other efforts, "Drastic Plastic" is worth picking up to complete your library-Be Bop Deluxe never put out an album that sucked.

3 out of 5 stars Weakest album by a superlative band.......2002-06-28

Its a weak album by BeBop standards. Get it last after Sunburst Finish, Axe Victim, Modern Music.
