Euro power metal from... the USA !.......2007-06-09
Consisting of eight tracks, the album packs unbridled speed, driven by ultra-fast double bass drums, grooving twin guitars, and searing, high-register vocals by Michael Gremio. This guy sounds so uncannily like Kiske in his heyday or Gamma Ray's Kai Hansen when he decides to tear the stratosphere with his maniacal screams, it's totally unbelievable. The energetic, fists-in-the-air opener "Leaving All Behind" kicks the album off in grand fashion, carried by pumping rhythms and crushing twin guitar harmonies while "A Sign Far Beyond", arguably the best cut on the album, drives their music into the more aggressive territory of power metal, perfected by mid-90's Gamma Ray. Cellador's songs boast irresistible choruses, as on "Forever Unbound" and the epic "Seen Through Time", both graced by the genre's hallmarks. The tasty guitar opening of "Wakening" belies that this song was actually released in 2006 as opposed to 1987 when Helloween-style power metal was taking the entire metal community by storm. Lyrically, unlike most Euro power metallers, Cellador focuses on more personal issues rather than fantasy-based themes or tales of knights and epic battles.
That said, Euro power metal genre is a pretty limited genre to expand on. Over the past two decades, everything has been done by countless bands, so it would be wrong to claim Cellador is by any stretch of the word doing anything remotely original or unheard of. However, judging by the songs on this disc, originality must be the band's last concern; they seem more interested in having fun while playing the music they enjoy. And in that, they are more than successful.
They've made a great start. Let's see what happens when they put out their sophomore album. Check Cellador out if you're into bands like Gamma Ray, Helloween, Edguy, Stratovarius, and Sonata Arctica -- or pretty much any other Euro power metal act.
Nebraska? Debut? I can't believe this.......2007-02-15
Good solid performance.......2006-08-20
Now, with that all out of the way, I find this album to be an excellent and very solid performance by a talented young group of musicians here (the drummer is only friggan 17 years old as of this writing!). I've heard the gripes about the vocals, but I honostly think Mike sounds quite good here (and he does at the live performances as well, but I digress as this is supposed to be a review of this particular album). I imagine he'll get even better with more experience. There are some excellent guitar work here as well. The three guitarist (two guitars and bass) really do play off of each other very well and seems to never get in each other's way. Young David (like I said above, only 17 years old), really does a solid job taking up the percussion duties. I sure was impressed when hearing it here on this album, as well as seeing him play at the show as well. To barrow a line from one of my friends, there is something "honost" about the music here. There are no "hidden" keyboardist, no "synth loops" or anything like that. This is just 5 guys that are having a good time, up here just jamming out some really cool music.
The only real down side (and why I did not give this a perfect 5 out of 5 stars - wish I could give 1/2 stars, as I think this is better than 4 stars, but not quite 5 stars) is that the music does sound somewhat derivative at times of similiar bands of this style, most notably DragonForce (who I also saw live and got to hang out with at length as well). For example the track "No Chances Lost", sounds like something right off a DragonForce album, to the point where when I first heard it, I thought it was a DragonForce cover. Also, the guitar work may not be "as technical" as that of DragonForce and others, but then again, I think that'll come with experience. I just got done listening to this back-to-back with DragonForce's Valley of the Damned, and I can definitly tell a difference in play ability and experience. But still, these guys are good at what they are doing here, and there is no denying that. They will only get better if they can keep this up.
One interesting aspect that I got after talking at length with Chris, the lead guistarist, is the issue of a keyboardist. It seems there is a bit of disagreement within the band about wether to add a keyboardist or not. One side thinks it'll add a more melodic or symphonic feel to the music, whereas the other side thinks it'll "cheese out" the music to much. Personally, I tend lean towards "pro-keyboardist" side here, as I think, if done correctly, can add to the music - but the key here is "done correctly". May be in the future, they will add a keyboardist. Will be interesting how that would work out. But anyway - I digress....
To sum up - this is a very good, solid performance by an up-and-coming band, and an excellent debut. If they can continue, I think we'll all be seeing some really good stuff coming from these guys in the future. I sure hope so, and already looking forward to a second album. If you are a fan of this type of music (and perhaps a good way to introduce somebody that may not be), this album is definitly recommended.
Nebraska + European Power Metal, Who would have imagined.......2006-08-18
I have been in Omaha for 2 years now, and I am shocked I have not heard of these guys until now. They just do not play this stuff on the radio around here enough. We have a great local scene, just need more rock stations. I'm glad the world has a chance to get this album now.

There have been so many great recordings of all of the important masterpieces that critics and listeners are often justified in thinking that there's no point in recording them yet again. Then along comes a recording like this one, which revives one's faith in the future of classical music. Gil Shaham is competing with classic performances by Isaac Stern in the Barber, and Jascha Heifetz in the Korngold. And he's as good as either of them, not to mention far more impressively recorded. In particular, the Korngold Concerto--a masterpiece just now coming into its own--has never sounded so resplendent. What a great disc! --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:
Fan of Classical String Music.......2007-07-22
1- Find on Amazon Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto.
2-The price was ok.
3- To place an order for the CD and it was delivered within 5 days.
4-Note that no local retail outlets sell classical music. I would burn several gallons of gasoline to find a store. Probably if I got there, the CD would not be available.
5-The quality of Gil Shaham's treatment on the violin of Barber's concerto was first class.
6-I recommend this disc. I make no claim to being a music critic.
great performance, substandard recording.......2006-10-15
To begin, there are some real dynamics problems with this recording. Its as if the orchestra was recorded using overzealous compression while the soloist was placed front and center with artificially exaggerated levels. I am sure the other reviewers would have to admit that Mr. Shaham was placed way to forward in this recording. His violin sounds enormous!
Second, and this is very curious considering this was a studio recording, Mr Shaham's violin begins to go out of tune in the second movement. It is only the lower strings, but it is very evident to my ears-this resolves itself as the music climbs higher, but I am shocked that no one stopped the recording session to address this.
I will say that the performance is excellent, particularly the conducting, as the dynamics in the score, especially at the end of the second movement, are very well articulated by Mr. Previn. While Mr. Shaham is excellent, I feel the emotions of this piece, for whatever reason, are better served by a female player. I have seen Hilary Hahn perform this piece live, and I believe she understands the intentions of Barber to the letter.
All in all, a very good effort by the performers, a seriously questionable effort by the recording company and especially those overseeing this recording session.

short and sweet suites.......2007-05-18
in fact, it is a much stronger set of kormgold's melodies than 'the sea hawk' because korngold didn't write much for films. when he did, the efforts were towering. sometimes, as in the case of 'another dawn' or 'of human bondage', then overpowered the film altogether.
when you hear the suite for 'bondage', this remark will make perfectly good sense. there is no sense of a film about a young medical student lost in an obsessive love for a tawdry waitress. there is just melodious euro-stuffs, arranged and performed to perfection.
korngold's style suited 'elizabeth and essex' and 'the sea wolf'. for 'elizabeth', the quasi=operatic style is totally appropriate to the romance and intrigue of the court of elizabeth i and for 'wolf', he actually tones it down a bit and creates melancholy, haunting music for the love scenes between the characters played by john garfield and ida lupino.
and best of all, he gives a preview of his gift for composing orchestral pieces with the 'hollenius concerto', a one-movement piece for cello and orchestra that is built partly from a theme from 'elizabeth'. it's beautiful. and it's the on'y recording of the piece so it's a treasure and a weighty addition to your film music collecgtion if you can find it.
Excellent record of Korngold's film music.......2006-05-16

Album Description
In 1988 Philip Glass scored Errol Morris' extraordinary documentary film entitled "The Thin Blue Line". This film helped exonerate a man named Randall Adams who was serving a life sentence for the murder of a police officer that he didn't commit. It was also responsible for exposing the actual murderer. Mr. Morris' repetitive, obsessive storytelling style is perfectly supported by Philip Glass' hypnotic score and the overall effect is so engaging and irresistible, that it is impossible not to be drawn into this true-life drama. That same year Nonesuch Records released a CD of the film's soundtrack that interestingly included the narration and interviews from the film and it tells the entire story. In continuing with Orange Mountain Music's mission to expose prime material from the Philip Glass archive of recordings, we have decided to release the original score without the voice-over so it can be experienced thoroughly. We have also included the extra material that was written and recorded for the film but was never used.
The Munkasci/Riesman team produced the original recordings and the ensemble includes strings, flutes, trumpets, French horns and percussion. The music is dark and moody, full of tension appropriately for such a chilling film. You can expect to be captivated by this masterful score.
Album Description
Orange Mountain Music reissue of the acclaimed composer's masterful score to the 1988 film (minus the voice-over that appears on the Nonesuch edition). Also includes extra material that was written & recorded for the film but was never used.Customer Reviews:
THE THIN BLUE LINE soundtrack with music only is a quest fulfilled!.......2006-10-27
Now is your chance to buy this musical masterpiece without the distraction of dialogue. If you are like me, you might have yearned for a music-only release for years and years. Finally, your quest can be fulfilled!
P.S. To the "geniuses" in the soundtrack music industry,
Please do us all a huge favour by sparing us from any more soundtrack releases that have dialogue superimposed over the music (CASABLANCA, BLADE RUNNER, MORE MUSIC FROM TITANIC, MORE MUSIC FROM GLADIATOR, etc.)! If we wanted to hear the dialogue, we would either just watch the movie or burn a copy of the dialogue onto a CD by ourselves. So do us all a favour and open those music vaults to release complete soundtracks in their entirety without cheating with dialogue tracks! Thank you.
THANK GOODNESS--the music w/o the words.......2006-07-09
I eagerly went out and purchased the soundtrack to the movie, and was quite disappointed because it was the movie w/o the picture. All the dialog was on the disc (WHY????) So thank goodness someone reworked the score using a symphonic orchestra. They were very close to the original, but some of the instrument choices were a bit "generic," that's why I could only give it 4 stars. A verbatim track from the movie w/o any dialog as a TOTALLY original Philip Glass score would be a 5 star deal, all the way.
PS--w/o means "without." Sorry for the shorthand.
Worth buying as complement to the old CD issue.......2005-10-15
Off the Beaten Path!!.......2004-01-19
Well, I can't complain anymore - and I'll gladly stop. This soundtrack - without any dialogue, thank you - is available for our enjoyment and it has been making regular rounds on my CD player ever since. For those whove not heard the soundtrack before, but have some familiarity with Glass, this music probably sounds most (loosely) akin to "Dancepieces". The instrumentation is sparse, the pieces are inventive while maintaining an openness and accessibility, and the chord changes have a tendency to give you chills (well, they do to me anyway).
There are plenty of highlights: really the first five tracks are all brilliant (the third being rearranged as Glass's solo piano piece 'metamorphisis 1'). I also really liked tracks 9, 10 and 11 (which are all extremely short peices exploiting the same chordal theme). Also, track 19 (a longer peice for strings that I don't think made it into the film or the other soundtrack) has a calm but mighty sound that I've only heard Glass be able to pull off.
There are, to be sure, a few...well...bizarre tracks that almost sound more like a Michael Nyman experiment than something Glass would do. Two tracks use jazz brushes on a snare, playing a soft swing underneath strings that are playing in straight syncopation. A mismatch, in my opinion. Another two tracks (one of them track 20 - the 'hidden' track) use a surf-sounding guitar and a peppy - almost poppy - feel akin to Michael Nyman. Besides that, track 20 uses more studio effects than I've ever heard Philip Glass use. Very bizarre indeed (but you may well like it, and at any rate, it is very different)!!
Long and short, this album is a gem, even if some of the tracks are a bit eclectic. Glass is to be commended for creating a soundtrack that is a.) this compelling, b.) this diverse from track to track, and c.) simply put, this beautiful!

Criminally Underrated Crossover Album.......2005-08-14
Finally, I'd like to comment on the actual pressing of this album. This is definitely a fly-by-night kind of "remastering" work. On several tracks you can actually hear "record scratch", which leads me to believe that this is a very well done Vinyl to digital transfer. In other words, this is NOT a transfer from the original tapes. COMBAT has done the same on other so-called "remastered re issues". If it's done so cheap, why is this album so DAMN expensive?!?! It's really a shame such a colossal album as this one is not given a fair digital treatment when so much "garbage" is floating out there. Sure, the sound is good enough, and it sure beats the tedious job of doing the transfer yourself (if you own the album and have the gear to do this stuff), but we'll have to wait for some better re issue, because this album deserves one!
