5 out of 5 stars Endearing Collection of Montovani Film Music.......2006-09-28

This is a very good collection of Montovani film music. These recording are so soothing and pleasing to the ear. Most impressive are Montovani's versions of YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE is incredibly beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Movies and Mantovani Make Magnificent Musical Memories. .......2005-04-18

In this year in which fans celebrate Mantovani's 100th birthday, another excellent British compilation of some of the great maestro's original recordings has been released. The tracks on this CD come predominantly from Mantovani's 1957 bestselling LP, Film Encores, his 1959 Film Encores Volume 2, and his 1967 LP entitled "Mantovani/Hollywood." Up until now, the six tracks from the Hollywood LP have been the most difficult to find on CD in locations other than Japan, and it includes Monty's exciting arrangements of the themes from Zorba the Greek, the Magnficent Seven, Lawrence of Arabia, and You Only Live Twice. While these alone are worth the CD price, the remaining selections comprise the very best of Mantovani's film music library, including Unchained Melody (now better known as the theme from the movie "Ghost"), April Love, the theme from The Apartment, and Charlie Chaplin's Limelight. Attentive Mantovani fans will hear the inclusion of a less heard variation of the "golden hit" Moon River in which the maestro replaced the trumpet solo with the soprano sax in a later recording of this forever popular number. Sooner or later, and we hope sooner, everything recorded by the original orchestra led by the incomparable Mantovani will appear on CD. That is a just and fitting tribute to the most popular light orchestra leader in the 20th Century whose music will live on and will be heard to delight fans all over the world in the 21st.

4 out of 5 stars Best of Xavier Cugat.......2006-11-13

If you are looking for Xavier Cugat original style of playing this album will not disappoint you. The title selection contains some of his most popular songs namely "Fly Me To the Moon", "Green Eyes", Papa Loves Mambo" and many more. His music in the traditional Cuban Latin style is the closes you can find with a touch of the ballroom sophistication. His ability to have variety in his percussion rhythm section makes his music much more interesting and a pleasure to listen or dance to.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT ONE-- MANY GOLD STARS.......2003-01-19

After just receiving this CD, I would give it a star for each selection on this CD. There isn't one that I do not like. I particularly like "SWAY". I don't have this song on any of my MANY CD's by Cugat. All familiar songs are done in a different style and each one is done superbly. I don't understand why this CD is considered an import. This one, along with ABSOLUTE BEST, THE KING PLAYS SOME ACES, CUBAN MAMBO, CUGAT CALVALCADE, CUGAT IN SPAIN, MAMBO AT THE WALDORF, BREAD,LOVE AND CHA CHA CHA and a couple others should be on AMAZON's list of top Cugat sellers instead of the ones they have been showing for years as the top sellers. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Mercury recordings.......2002-03-11

This CD from GB has music from Xavier Cugats period on Mercury, about 1958-1964. Very good with swinging beat. I onw about 55 CDs with Xavier Cugat and many old LPs too. Anybody who wants to discuss this music is welcome to write to me.

5 out of 5 stars Heartstrings.......2000-05-22

I have just recently discovered Muriel Anderson through a CD entitled "Theme for Two Friends" which featured her friend Julie Adams, a cellist. This limited edition CD was absolutely beautiful, which led me to do more research on her music. I am impressed with her versatility which shines in the "Heartstrings" album. It is obvious she loves music and is able to express her passion and sensitivity through a various types of music. I am partial to the more melancholic themes, but it is all wonderful. This album album is refreshing! Thanks Muriel.

    Album Description

Spectrum is a collection of 15 new songs from the legendary Yes guitarist, Steve Howe. Recorded in Switzerland during the Winter of 2004 / 2005, Spectrum gloriously showcases Steve's unique talent and his unmistakable style. Joined this time by Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel) on bass, Oliver Wakeman (son of Yes's Rick Wakeman) on keyboards, and Steve's own sons, Virgil and Dylan on Moog synthesizer and drums respectively, Spectrum is a wonderful display of instrumental prowess from one of progressive rock's founding fathers.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars great soloing..........2006-04-11

...one person says there is too much soloing, one says not enough...which is it? Frankly I find this cd very well played with just the right amount of everything. This cd along, with the new live Traffic cd, are great examples of groups and musicians that have let various styles of music influence them to create their own unique, hybrid and eclectic styles. What Steve does on this album is simply beautiful guitar playing. He goes from country, classical, and rock sometimes within the same song. Also jazz, fusion, and progrock stylings and some indian and latin is also heard. All styles of his playing are unified with rocknroll energy and passion. I have the acoustic cd by Steve called Natural Timbre, and that one and this one, are great complements/compliments to Steve's unique guitar style.

I find this a masterful cd and I probably like what Steve does on this cd better than even his Yes work(not that I hate his Yes work, but I find this cd is simply a very good guitar work. Yes is more than just guitar.)

btw, the supporting musicians do a great job backing up Steve. that dont sound unsure of themselves at all.

3 out of 5 stars Great musicianship, however slightly unchained.......2005-10-15

Spectrum is a very good album. I'll admit first off that I'm relatively new to the Yes/Howe world and have been ingesting as much of this body of work as I can.

The guitar work is very fast and technically clean, a trend I've come to expect from Howe. The only other album I have to reference is his other recent album Natural Timbre, and these two albums are polls apart in terms of their mood and general thrust of their sound. Spectrum sounds like a jam session, moving from different styles and sounds from track to track. Some are intense and jarring while others are a bit more melodic and pleasing to the ear. Natural Timbre, being purely acoustic, had a uniformly smooth sound, and from what little I've heard, had many similarities in sound, if not implication, to what I've heard from the Album Skyline. The melodic, almost vocal style his guitar adopted for much of these two albums is less pronounced in Spectrum; there are many more blazing solos here and for many listeners who didn't enjoy natural timbre this may be refreshing.

However, as a casual listener this album made much less of an impact on me. Honestly the album as a whole is a bit all over the map. It sounds like a "Greatest Hits" album rather than a new piece of studio work, which isn't wholly welcome for me. The album just doesn't quite flow making it difficult to truly find the more exemplary parts of it.

Not to say Howe's contribution isn't top notch, because it is. His guitar work is truly legendary; I've never heard anything that he's played that isn't technically brilliant; the sound he achieves while playing is another story completely. I feel that this album overall is very well performed but a bit jumbled and schizophrenic.

While I wouldn't recommend going to far out of the way to acquire Spectrum I would definetely recommend picking it up if you cross paths with it at the record store, or if you are simply a huge die-hard fan of Howe. It actually may be a very good starting place for new listeners interested in exposing themselves to Howe's many different styles and the technical mastery he has over this instrument. I enjoy and respect it for what it is, but am cognizant of the fact that he has done much better work.

4 out of 5 stars Forget the other reviews this is a good album.......2005-10-09

This is good listening and has some exceptional tracks. Tunes that stay in your head. Steve Howe is a legend and has not lost it.

3 out of 5 stars Do I recommend Spectrum? YES.......2005-09-12

Steve's playing is delightful on this CD! Too bad the song writing isn't up to the same standard. This may have otherwise gone down as a classic. Irregardless, this still is one of Steve's better releases and it will remain in my collection.

    5 out of 5 stars A Truly Fine CD.......2005-08-18

This is an extrodinary CD by and extrodinary guitarist. Steve seems to shy away from the blazzing guitar solos that he played in the 70s but he more then makes up for it with his complicated, excellent chord playing. Steve is truly a guitarist playing excellent chords and lead solos within a variety of musical styles. This CD features mostly electric guitar with some accustic guitar sprinkled in. Buy this CD along with Elements and Skyline

    Keep the CDs coming Steve.

Countless instrumental records later, Man or Astroman? have seemingly chosen "Astroman" as their modus operandi. The skewered Ventures surf-rock riffs are still lurking in the mix, but the emphasis these days is on space travel. The song titles themselves grow in length and absurdity ("Obligatory Part 2 Song In Which There Is No Presently Existing Part 1, Nor the Plans to Make One" is a personal fave), but the sonic jousting is focused on a propulsive bull's-eye that ensures these tunes rock, no matter how much they meander. They are, perhaps, the only band to incorporate a Pink Floyd influence without turning their music into ambient environmental music for superior plant growth. Instead, with the help of gurgling synthesizers, hyperelectrified lap-steel guitars, and short-wave radio interference, Man or Astroman? continue their search for life beyond standard three-chord rock, and they find it. --Rob O'Connor

4 out of 5 stars Album Grows On You.......2001-07-11

When i first purchased this album I was in dismay on how it succeeded in leaving me in withdrawl from Man or Astro-Man. After listening to this album for a second time i grew some liking to a few tracks, and now i have found it to be an entertaining album, although it lacked the certain appeal that Man or Astro-Man has had in the past, i do believe that this is an exceptional album but in reality Man or Astro-Man isn't much without Starcrunch and the great albums produced by these fellows will most certainly never equal the "Project Infinity" and "Experiment Zero" days. Then again, I could be wrong.

2 out of 5 stars a bit too far over the edge.......2001-06-07

this is by far my least favorite astro-album. MOAM started a gradual transition away from "space surf rock" toward more offbeat and noisy music with the "technetium" album, and may have gone a bit too far this time. "Technetium" is an amazing album, "EEVIAC" is good, but this one just goes too far into the "strange noises" for my tastes. i mean, really, there's a track that's nothing but the buzzing of a dot-matrix printer! there are very few tracks on this album that seem to be more than "organized noise".

but hey, they're free to experiment, and i'll be buying their next effort the day it comes out. but as it stands, I can't recommend this particular album even to seasoned MOAM fans, much less people looking for an introduction to the band. (for that, you need "Project Infinity" or "Experiment Zero")

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoying, excelent, unique.......2002-09-01

I've bought this CD yesterday and it's fabuloous.
This remind me much of the original Mauriat sound when
i was child (70's). Very variate (songs and style),
appasionate, "Theme of A summer place" is wonderful,
with a sound "Mauriatic" to his best. "Jeux-interdits"
is good but i prefer the 70's version (in the "The best
of Paul Mauriat" or so, vol. 2 (3 LP's). "Ebony and Evory"
is modern, with synthetizers but veru nice, etc.
        Very enjoyable.
