Having long recorded as Palace Music or Palace, the enigmatic, elusive Bonnie "Prince" Billy continues to confound musical expectations. His latest may well be his loveliest, a series of meditations and tone poems on love and mortality, with the autumnal strains of a chamber quartet and the vocal counterpoint of Dawn McCarthy supporting Billy's tremulous expression of his surreal, stream-of-consciousness lyricism. Results range from the dreamy, bluesy "Cursed Sleep" and the evocation of a British madrigal on "No Bad News" to the discordant propulsion of "The Seedling" and the call and response of the folkish "Then the Letting Go." It all fits together in a manner that defies categorization and dares the listener to resist its aural seduction. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Just as Cave.......2007-05-31

A gorgious record. Oldhams music is becoming mature, aged like wood or spirit. A true treasure and one not to be missed unless you care nothing for poems. This release is on par with Nick Cave's masterpiece "No More Shall We Part". Both artists highly prolific, yet Will seems to be a tad more rooted. Simply amazing to have someone like him around in our lifetime. Sort of like Prefontaine. Go Pre...Go Will.

4 out of 5 stars Chill.......2007-04-07

if you like the really chill BPB stuff, this one is for you. However, there are none of the rockin' type ones, so yeah good stuff

5 out of 5 stars Inevitable, as if it grew out of the ground..........2007-02-10

This CD is for me, Will Oldham's finest thus far as a solo artist. It has all the sleepy, druggy quality you expect from him, but the backing vocals here provide a crystalline, almost fairport-convention-ish counterpoint to Oldham's soft, broken-in, guy-down-the-block-who's-deeper-than-you-thought-he-was voice. Will is crunchier than crunchy in terms of his hippiedom these days, but the music never suffers from hippie pretensions. The way he pronounces "stairs" on "Bad News" alone should tell you all you need to know about him and his "thing." To those who are mystified or put to sleep by this, you've missed a key factor in appreciating this stuff: it's meant to be modern folk music for mellow times. It isn't party music, and doesn't attempt to "rock" at all, and that's OK. He does three songs IN A ROW in waltz time, for chrissakes. The real kicker is that Oldham is so accomplished at 3/4 that you don't even notice until the third waltz that that's what you're hearing. This record has charms that many "mainstream" listeners might miss, and that's OK. If you wear sweatpants and watch "American Idol" and find Paris Hilton fascinating and are all broken up over the death of Anna Nicole Smith, this CD ain't for you. You may listen to your Coldplay and feel "sophisticated" and leave Bonnie Prince Billy alone, thanks very much. If you like to put on music, lay down and close your eyes and actually LISTEN and be transported somewhere, then you probably already own this. If you don't, then purchase it with all speed. It's mellow and satisfying, like drinking good red wine or reading a good mid-period Richard Brautigan novel. Nice.

5 out of 5 stars No one else is writing songs like this..........2007-01-22

While this disc is not as good as "I See a Darkness" (certainly a member of the proverbial "deserted island disc list"), "The Letting Go" is terrific. BPB is so creatively prolific, giving his fans twists and turns that are almost always welcome (the disc with Tortoise is an odd choice, however). Standout tracks include "Love Comes to Me", "Cursed Sleep" and the title track, which maintains BPB's mystique as much as anything he's ever written. Any fan of Americana should begin to include the work of BPB in their disc collection. As a fellow with more than 500 discs, I can safely say that there isn't much more rewarding, thought-provoking music in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful; True to Form.......2007-01-09

When I was told that this album had strings on it to accompany the guitar, I was skeptical. Then I listened to it. The string accompaniment works beautifully. I don't know from what well Will Oldham draws the emotion with which he has performed album after album, but it runs deep and dark. The Letting Go is just another in his long line of exceptional albums that consistently deliver in terms of songwriting, music, and performance. I whole-heartedly recommend this album to both new listeners and long-time fans.

When word spread through indie gossip sites that Bonnie Prince Billy AKA Will Oldham AKA Palace was set to team with Matt Sweeney of Chavez, Zwan and Man `Zine fame, unless you were a dedicated fan of elaborate facial hair, it seemed hard to be very intrigued. But the Superwolf collaboration between the two is frayed, fuzzy and undeniably excellent. It's hard not to get hooked from the first song, which declares "I am under your spell/ And you will have me I reckon," a near six-minute epic that goes from moody sparse organ bit to absolutely choogling guitar part, the words shouted like some Southern anthem or ancient sea shanty until it ends with an elongated coda that sounds a lot like a Jerry Garcia solo album. It sounds a bit like Neil Young ca. Tonight's the Night covering British folk singer Nic Jones' Penguin Eggs album. Sweeney and Oldham play most of the instruments and though the vocals are mostly by Oldham, they do harmonize well. It's remarkable how Oldham continues to reinvent and reinvigorate his mystic mountain man persona The truly surprising thing is that the rest of the album is just as ridiculously good. --Mike McGonigal

This album took a few listens before I got it, but when I did it blew me across the room. This is heavy stuff, deep, reflective and dark. Listen to Blood Embrace to see what I mean. Wow!

4 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing.......2005-09-15

Fans of Palace Brothers/Bonnie Prince Billy will find much to love in this album. It's much richer and more electrified in its arrangement than the spare recordings of earlier days, but I think it really works.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Oldham Release.......2005-06-25

For anyone who's familiar with Palace music or Will Oldham's previous releases, a familar, raw and building intensity will greet you on the first track, "My Home is the Sea" and persists throughout the album, rising and falling with the skillful grace and control of a bird in flight.

Superwolf's sound quality is a bit more polished than other Bonnie "Prince" Billy releases, displaying Will Oldham's confident, hovering vocals over playfully adorned verses, courtesy of Matt Sweeney. The songs maintain a Bolero-like quality in that they build toward an inevitable, triumphant release, taking in an important journey toward the epiphany at the end.

To buy this album is to invest in a solid, indie-blues album that exists delightfully outside of conventional definitions. Will Oldham has NEVER released anything I've ever regretted buying. He continues to be maddeningly capable of engaging his listeners in an authentic, reflective way that keeps his fanbase growing and growing.

5 out of 5 stars A Prince Becoming King.......2005-06-17

Will Oldham is an artist who has for years been hovering just outside the lens of the indie genre he is often credited with having birthed. Funny thing is, he never, for a moment, seems to want to let the categorizers of music zero in on him. Most reading this review are probably aware of how he has embraced the alter-ego concept and sent about 5 different monikers flying off into musical space, and how, after 5 incredible albums under his most recent nom de plume, he seems to have settled comfortably on the wonderfully cryptic and nonsensical Bonnie "Prince" Billy. With Superwolf, his latest release with the disgustingly talented Matt Sweeney and the follow-up to the devastatingly dark and beautiful Master & Everyone, Will Oldham the man has taken a bold step forward and assumed his place somewhere alongside the likes of Neil Young and Bob Dylan as a mature and persisting musical genius who can do no wrong with ink or guitar strings-and, in this case, yet unexplored electric guitar strings. In terms of career progression, Superwolf is Oldham's Rust Never Sleeps, his Before the Flood. It is a signed affidavit to all doubters that he is the real deal.

From Sweeney's very first riff on "My Home Is the Sea," one can immediately sense an assertiveness in Oldham's voice that was absent on previous undertakings. This contrasted with dramatic shifts in the shaky, tortured falsetto that has become his trademark, what you have are some unusual flourishes to what has thus been a consistently dark sound, a sliver of light in that ever-darkening canon of his. "Beast for Thee" and "Bed Is for Sleeping" are sad ballads filled with brief glimmers of hope by Sweeney's dreamy guitar playing, while "Rudy Foolish" and "Only Someone Running" are devastating tracks in and of themselves, but with arrangements and harmonies that somehow keep the thing floating above water, up there in the sunlight. The rest of the album is pure aching bliss, with the middle track, "Lift Us Up," serving as the crescendo and centerpiece, making the ebb and flow of agony and ecstasy a symmetrical two-faced beast. When I took a few of my friends to see this sparsely attended concert live, one (who'd never even heard of Bonnie "Prince" Billy) said, "My God, that was triumphant..."

As an added bonus, the album itself is full of interesting little tidbits, like the rather wordy political insert with interesting insights into cannibis and alcohol obsessed cultures, as well as the lovely sadistic artwork. Hearts drawn in blood and beautiful pornography are some of the contradictions offered, reflecting the richness and oddness of the man and his music. And there's a priceless shot of both men on the back cover, Sweeney looking stoned out of his mind in aviator shades, and Oldham in what looks like a mechanics overalls stringing an electric guitar. Given the accessibility of this album, if you've never heard of Bonnie "Prince" Billy (like many of my now-obsessed friends never did), this is a good place to get hooked.

5 out of 5 stars "Why aren't you kind to me? You could so easily...".......2005-02-13

I don't want to write a lengthy review or reiterate what you have already read in the preceding reviews, but let it be said that this album is amazing, and you should at the very least take the time to listen to the previews above in either the Windows Media or Real format before navigating away from this page. "Bed is for Sleeping" or "Beast for Thee" are the popular tracks and contain Oldham's most accessible singing in his entire career. He has come a long way from his shaky, cracking vocals on albums like "There Is No-One What Will Take Care of You" and "Days in the Wake". Sweeney's guitar work here is gorgeous and also not to be missed.

Notes on the limited edition- a bit of a ripoff- no extra tracks or artwork. In fact the only thing better is that it's a cardboard DigiPak. It's even missing out the funny drawing of "Will and Matt" contained in the standard edition.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy, a.k.a. Will Oldham, is no ordinary bard. His writing, which can call to mind 19th-century American poets like Walt Whitman, has won him a cult of fans that include Marianne Faithfull, Björk, and Beck. Master's painfully fragile intensity is disconcerting and challenging, yet its purity and tenderness is soothing all the same. Dark, intimate, and sparsely arranged, it's a loose, meditative concept record that explores issues of gender, self, and love. Here Oldham trades in his familiar warble for a hushed, clear high tenor and a rock band for his acoustic guitar; ever-so-soft strings and keyboards warm up the arrangements while he is backed by Marty Slayton's sweet, feminine harmonies. Lyrically less dense than previous releases, Master does retain Oldham's typically quaint phrasings, as in "Ain't You Wealthy, Ain't You Wise?" and "Joy and Jubilee." With a few listens, these 10 oddly gentle songs will endear themselves, and perhaps prove Master to be Oldham's best and most personal work to date. --Jillian Steinberger

A very intimate cd not easy to categorize into the existing musical genres. Songs ranging from easy and gentle to very tense.

5 out of 5 stars Ain't It All Good Enough to Sing?.......2006-02-21

When critics reference Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, they tend to emphasize the shortcomings of everything following I See a Darkness. Heck, it's no wonder. Pitchfork's Samir Khan hit the nail squarely on the head, stating in his 10.0 review that ISaD is "not music." Indeed, that enigmatic album stands out as something of the "other"--from its skull-centered cover to its gypsy-funeral feel.

True, Master and Everyone echoes neither the ghost-folk eeriness of I See a Darkness nor the family-reunion feel evinced by its follow-up, Ease Down the Road. Nonetheless, when considered song-by-song, MaE represents BPB's most cohesive, melodic (though sparse) work. In fact, I would argue that it is--taken as an entire album--"better" than I See a Darkness.

Master and Everyone retains the gut-wrenching honesty set forth in ISaD. What it does in addition, though, is strip away the Halloween spirits and fiery chants. Rather, Master penetrates to the inner feelings that fuelled these chilling displays. One senses a strong degree of solitude in songs such as "Master and Everyone" and "Wolf Among Wolves". I cannot help but picture a broken man, sitting alone on his prairie porch, defeated by love, war, and/or life writ large.

This brokenness seems intense, yet it is not final. In "Maundering" and "Lessons...", BPB grabs hold of something--a hope born of faith, love, and humanity. The fact these songs feature little more than the barest of guitar strums effectively places our attention on the vocals--on the man whose ever-fluctuating cycle of direction and despair we are witnessing.

The album's closing track, "Hard Life", provides a fitting end to the sentiments expressed therein. Whether or not such is its intent, BPB's last number conveys a feeling of...contentedness, and even humble appreciation. "And it's a hard life/For a man with no wife/Baby, it's a hard life/God makes you live. But without it/Don't doubt it/You don't even have/Your tears to give." We have drawn an often trying and tumultuous lot; nonetheless, it is what we have, and we (or, at least he) will strive to survive the terrain.

Indeed, these 10 songs present to us the core of a tormented, yet beautiful, soul. He still, no doubt, sees a darkness. There is, however, light at the end of the road. There must be, or else why is living worth it?

3 out of 5 stars Moody.......2006-01-05

This album is a moody album, not a lot of arrangement. Just Will playing guitar with an occasional background voice.
It's a great album, but not his best. If I hadn't reviewed BPB CD's before I would have given it 4 Stars, but compared to "I See A Darkness" and everything he recorded under the name of Palace and it's derivitives.

5 out of 5 stars A longtime favorite.......2005-10-24

This record and I have been through a lot together. I got it freshman year of college, I am graduating soon and it stil warms my heart, makes me happy and wistful at the same time. One of my favorite Autumn records and great for quiet days. Typically I listen to it when driving at night or cooking in the afternoon, I don't know why but it works well with those two events.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Songwriter Of This Or Any Generation!.......2005-09-21

Bonnie Billy is an under appreciated genious. His lyrics and music will blow you away everytime you listen to him. This is a new generation of folk music, with the same mountainous feel. Old tyme lyrics and a scratchy voice brings this artist to a higher level. This piece of work happens to be my favorite, but everything this guy puts out is upstanding, but as far as a starter to Mr. Oldham, this will do ya right. Also try his new album "Superwolf" and his older album "Ease Down The Road" if not just for the masterpiece song "A King At Night".

Greatest Palace Music appears to be a strangely-packaged greatest-hits collection, stuffed nicely some of the most affecting songs Will Oldham's penned, "Ohio River Boat Song" and "Horses" among them. But while his own fan club picked these songs, here they've been wholly re-recorded by Oldham under his currently-preferred moniker Bonnie Prince Billy (though he continues to record under his own name when he feels like it) since retiring the Palace name and its permutations in the late 1990s. Sings was cut in a fancy Nashville studio, with a host of wizened session pros including pianist Hargus "Pig" Robbins and bluegrass fiddler Stuart Duncan. Each song has layers of fiddle, pedal steel, vibes, vocals, even saxophone. You'd sooner have expected an electronic album from Oldham than this--none of it appears to have been played by a drunk indie-rocker. A few of the arrangements are almost Branson/ Mandrell-ish and seem like a put-on at first (witness the off-Broadway gospel backup vocals on "Pushkin.") But with a few listens, the album's adult genius is clear. Here are intriguing, laidback versions of a master songwriter's best songs, sung in his most assured voice yet. Is it some bizarre, ironic in-joke? Who cares, when the result sounds this great? --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars dare i say, cute?.......2006-03-24

somehow this release is very endearing. the richer production takes away from the barebones feel of days in the wake, etc., and it's in a way more effective, i think because it feels less pretentious, which is not to say ingenuine necessarily. calling this dude a genius is kind of like calling conor oberst the next dylan, but he is certainly very talented and a good wordsmith.

4 out of 5 stars There is darkness, there is light.......2005-05-25

This is a really fun album for folks who are already familiar with these Palace songs. The songs that were originally dark are still dark, but now they're fun and dark. The version of Cinematographer on this disc is celebrational! I would not recommend it as a starting place for anyone interested in Palace or BPB. But if you've already had an "in", then go ahead, buy one of these!

4 out of 5 stars Nashville Skyline.......2004-09-06

About a year ago or so, Drag City had a deal where you could vote for your track listing for the greatest Palace hits. Well it is a greatest hits album, but re-done in Nashville by a bunch of legendary studio musicians. Well it's an interesting concept and right away I was intrigued. I knew buying this that it would be expecting too much to assume that the songs would be improved. In fact a lot of the songs are really polished, w/high fidelity which to me detracts from the charm the originals have. But there are some moments where the results are something completely different, and interesting. The overall result is a lot like Dylan's Nashville Skyline. The similarities stretch beyond the way this records sounds...It crosses over into the same way that when it came out it challenges the audience. If you're a Will Oldham fan then you're along for the ride. Expect that he's going to turn the corner at any moment and challenge you. If you're a Will Oldham fan pick this up. Listen to it a few times, because it's a grower.

5 out of 5 stars Accessible versions of Will Oldham's genius........2004-07-19

Like many people I know, I became interested in Will Oldham after hearing Johnny Cash's cover of Oldham's song "I See A Darkness." I went right out and bought the "I See A Darkness" album, as well as "Ease On Down The Road" and I loved them both.

When I explored a bit deeper into Oldham's back catalog, I found the presentation a bit more, um, "challenging." His brilliance as a songwriter is there, but his work prior to "I See A Darkness" is EXTREMELY (and I mean extremely) "lo-fi"--rambling, unfocused performances that sound like they were recorded underwater. I still own "Arise Therefore," "Days In The Wake," and "There Is No One..." but I can't say I listen to any of them very often.

So it was wonderful to hear this disc- the performances are tight and professional, and the greatness of the older songs really comes through. I *highly* recommend this to anyone interested in Will Oldham's music, especially if they find the sloppiness of his earlier albums off-putting.

5 out of 5 stars If you haven't figured it out yet, you never will........2004-06-17

Will Oldham is a genius. Period.

Recording under a variety of "Palace" guises, indie critics are hailing Will Oldman, from Louisville, Kentucky, as the '90s' answer to Robert Johnston for his fractured blues and country primitivism. Palace Brothers, is a one-mic strum & croon affair that exerts a strong, emotional undertow on "Whither Thou Goest" and "Pushkin." --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Palace Brothers - really good.......2005-12-20

Will Oldham has released records under many names: Palace, Palace Songs, Palace Brothers, Palace Music, Will Oldham and now he is with his longest incarnation: Bonny Prince Billy. As the last alias he is been fairly succesful, he has of course been covered by Johnny Cash.

This album, which I just know as "The Palace Brothers" is one of my favorites. Whereas many lofi albums are a mix of junk and popdiamonds, the quality of this album is good.

The guitar is acoustic and very basic, the voice shaky but the songs are of a high standard. The beautiful "You Will Me Me When I Burn" starts of the record and it just goes on. The simple song "I Send My Love To You" is the best song and should be sung around campfire everywhere.

    A must-have for the indie/lo-fi fan.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and beautiful and shivery.......2004-12-08

This is one of those CDs that gets under your fingernails and down into your bones. Oldham couldn't play acoustic guitar or sing or write songs back then, but he's like a spooky old man on a front porch somewhere in coal country. Every song is a quiet night with a storm gathering in the distance. It's absolutely unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect in all it's brutal subltey.......2004-07-24

OHHHH man. So I dug Palace before I heard this album. I had heard alot of his other stuff, and thought him pretty brilliant. But THIS album... OH MAN. I was driving to Boston in the middle of the night with my fiancee, popped this in for the first time, and niether one of us spoke for the duration. All time froze, the cars and darkness cleared a path, and we were swept along with this gorgeous simple infinite sound in our ears. Sure, his voice is a little wavery but THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT! I mean PLENTY of people can 'sing pretty', but Will Oldham sounds like he's seen 100 years of pain and glory and his voice just bleeds honesty. The whole thing is just amazing. I hate to gush, but I can't help it. This is music at it's best. Buy it, please, it'll make you smile and stop your breath, I promise.

4 out of 5 stars Oh my God!.......2004-01-29

buy this one and viva last blues and i see a darkness.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious and perfect pie.......2003-12-21

This is an album that cools by the windowsill and will take you to a thousand different backroads, each one more rustic and poetic than the last, like a movie, until you realize you're listening to an album and not getting lost in a visual world you didn't create but feel so attached to. Songs like "I Send My Love To You" or "All is Grace" are timeless snapshots of everywhere and everything, in the grass and heads nodding underneath the fire of the sun. This is music they make suitcases and trains out of. These are all must-have songs that will leave you satisfied. Buy this novel immediately.

These 26 selections, recorded from 1904 to 1922, document the work of an important American player and band composer. Despite the trivial nature of most of the music, one can't help listening to Herbert Clarke's playing with respect and growing affection. He was a most elegant player, with a beautiful tone that comes across even in the earliest of these recordings. The showiest pieces, which can be quite dazzling, are still performed with taste and musicianship. This disc is an important sound document, and the transfers from even the earliest of the recordings are surprisingly listenable. Highly recommended to all brass and nostalgia lovers. --Leslie Gerber

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant playing transcending primitive recording technique.......2001-01-11

Hearing this CD -- despite the distracting surface noise from the primative acoustic recordings from which this CD was remastered -- I appreciate for the first time the greatness of Clarke as a cornet soloist. If he is not the greatest to date, he is surely one of the giants upon whose shoulders modern virtuosi of the trumpet (which has pretty much replaced the cornet) stand.

Clarke's sheer artistry in both composition and performance still dazzle and his interpretive ability brings to life some of the 'tear jerkers' of the golden age of popular brass music in a way no modern performance comes close to.

Although on first hearing one could be very much distracted by the primitive recordings, the brass player soon focuses on Clarke's playing so completely that the the surface noise disappears.

Every trumpet player and cornetist, more, every brass player and lover of band music, should own a copy.

5 out of 5 stars The Master of the Cornet.......2001-01-04

God bless Crystal Records for taking the time to re-issue these extremely rare and valuable recordings from an unfortunately neglected giant in American musical history. Most people today don't realise how famous and influential Mr. Clarke and his peers (Sousa, Pryor et. al.)were on the American musical scene at the beginning of the Twentieth century. It is very important that these recordings (and others from this period, the birth of sound recording) be preserved for future generations.

As for those who could not stand the "hiss" on these recordings, how spoiled can you be? You simply miss the point of all this. We all know that these records were made during the infancy of the recording industry, and that they didn't have the technology we now have. I find it thrilling to listen to them just as they are. Recorded sound is the closest we have to time travel, and I find it fascinating to listen to these recordings as though I was there when they were first made. And most of all, through the marvel of recorded sound (Mr. Sousa notwithstanding) I can listen today to the greatest cornetist who ever lived, even though he passed away over 50 years ago.

Hopefully Crystal Records will someday put out an anthology of original Sousa and Pryor Band recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Clarke is the cornet master!.......2000-08-03

Herbert Clarke is the finest cornetist the planet has ever seen. The technical brilliance on Carnival is just breathtaking. The sound quality of the recording is little hinderance on the true genius behind this man's playing. Don't let the hiss bother you!!!

5 out of 5 stars heartbreaking music from a bygone era.......2000-03-22

These vintage recordings would have been otherwise lost to us--and a great loss at that. Clarke plays so beautifully, esp. those pieces that he wrote. It's notall oom-paa-paa, but music that is deeply affecting and stirring. This is the effect that Wynton Marsalis was going for in his "Carneval." While Marsalis's album is a wonderful tribute, this is the original. A must-have for any serious trumpet player.

    1 out of 5 stars Be careful.......1999-09-14

Watch out if you want to buy this cd! It's a good cd with Herbert Clarke playing some of his own pieces the way they should be played...but the recording is TERRIBLE! Naturally, it's a 1904 recording! But the hiss for the first half of the cd is almost painful. It's NOT something you can just ignore, so don't be caught unawares.
