5 out of 5 stars Stunning CD.......2003-04-19

Essentially, an amazing lesson on who's who in hip-hop. Quality tracks by hip-hop pioneers and innovators, as well as a few pleasent surprises, make this an excellent buy. Solid grooves and tight basslines make the CD what it is. Classic old school cuts like Tone-Loc, NWA and House Of Pain are instantly recognizable, as is the remake of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way". Also featured prominently are early tracks of classic gangsta rappers. Snoop Dogg's "What's My Name" is probably my favorite song on the disc. It's an amazing party song with a killer groove. 2Pac's "California Love" is a rap classic, and it shines here. Dr. Dre's breakout single "Nuthin' But A G Thang" still remains a quality song, and is a perfect addition to the CD. Even better though are the more artistic cuts scattered throughout the disc. Arrested Development's soulful Tennessee was an excellent choice. Outkast's early Southern hit "Player's Ball" is probably one of my top favorites on the disc. But the real surprise was the Digable Planet track "Rebirth Of Slick". A cool beat combined with the lyrical strength of the trio lets the song speak for itself. The track is definitely one of the highlights. I would definitely recommend this CD. It is an amazing collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a huge surprise.......2001-01-13

If you really love to listen to r&b music, then this cd is definitely for you. It has songs from the late 80s to the late 90s. I love Bobby Brown, Lisa Stansfield,Brian Mcknight, etc.I actually bought this CD for one of my coworkers and she loved it!

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Great Collection.......2000-02-19

These types of collections are usually good for a few songs that one might then tape or re-burn on another CD. But based on a tip from a review, I bought this one, and it's suprisingly excellent -- like getting a superb party tape of (mostly) '90s R&B from a DJ friend. Pretty high quality throughout, and even the songs that got played to death on radio (Never Gonna Get It, Been Around the World, etc) sound good mixed with other lower key (but excellent) songs from Brandy, Aaliyah, Jodeci, Blackstreet, etc. A couple of songs seem out of place or don't fit (Tina Turner's What's Love Got To Do With It, Brian McKnight's ballad), but overall great stuff, ending with Boyz II Men's killer "End of the Road".

5 out of 5 stars Great Mix from the history of R&B.......2000-01-21

This CD is awesome. The songs range from 1984 to 1998, and it brings out the best in R&B. From Boyz II men's"End of the road", and R.Kelly's "Bump n'grind" this CD is great. Also "Anytime""This is how we do it", and "No Diggity" are real good.

4 out of 5 stars A very good mix.......2000-01-03

I though it was a very good mix and I really recomend it to any long term fan of R&B. It's a real shine from MTV.
