One of the most surreal singles in memory, "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)" has an even stranger story than you'd imagine: in 1998, a student lifted the text of an article columnist Mary Schmich had written for the Chicago Tribune and started sending it around the world, crediting it as a commencement speech given at MIT by Kurt Vonnegut. Film director Baz Luhrmann (who had taken a big part in designing the soundscapes of his films Strictly Ballroom and William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet) got his hands on it just as he was working on a remix of Rozalla's 1992 dance hit "Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)." Within a day, Luhrmann had hired a local actor to read the text, and a single was born. It's a wonderfully surreal pop-cultural moment on an album that strives for such things. Luhrmann's modus operandi involves the remixing and customizing of tracks until they have a fabulous sheen, and it owes a lot to the equally media-attuned Malcolm McLaren (and especially to McLaren's 1989 album Waltz Darling). Though he throws in a handful of time-tested songs (Doris Day's "Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps," La Bohème's "Che Gelide Manina"), Something for Everybody is very much of a specific moment--and though the moment may pass, fans will enjoy revisiting it time and again. --Randy Silver

I could tell you that song, but that would perhaps have you unscrupulously downloading it from some nefarious site. Besides, the whole album is a trip through musical spaces that no other compilation I have has taken me. It's that good.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Music!!!.......2007-04-02

As described, it is truly is "music for all..." The "Wear Sunscreen" song is My personal favorite...

5 out of 5 stars At last I found it!!.......2006-07-11

I'm from Spain and I really like Baz Luhrmann's music. I used to have this Cd but I lent it to somebody and never got it back. You can't imagine how difficult is to find it in Spain! And at last, I decided to buy it here because I really wanted theis album again.
I'm really happy with the service. I recieved it very fast! Thanks very much!!

5 out of 5 stars THE MAN IS A GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-12-11

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE ALBUM. IT IS TRUELY SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album From A Modern Master.......2003-03-01

If you've ever had the good fortune to see STRICLY BALLROOM, ROMEO + JULIET or MOULIN ROUGE, then you've been exposed to the pure visual and musical genius that is Baz Luhrmann. This pre-MOULIN ROUGE album covers a wonderfully wide range of music - mainly original and remixed music from Luhrmann's first two films, two of his theatrical productions for the Australian Opera (LA BOHEME & MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM), his production of HAIRCUT for the Sydney Theatre Company, and music from LAKE LOST.

Fans of STRICTLY BALLROOM will again recognize the original versions of Doris Day's classic "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" and Stanley Black's "Os Quindos De Ya Ya" as well as remixed versions of "Happy Feet," "Love Is In The Air" and Tara Morice's "Time After Time." ROMEO + JULIET lovers can hear fantastic remixed versions of "Young Hearts Run Free," "Everybody's Free," "When Doves Cry," and "Angel."

The real treat for Baz Luhrmann fans, however, are the tracks from and inspired by his works for The Sydney Theatre Company and the Australian Opera. They range from the purely operatic "Che Gelida Manina" from LA BOHEME (which has since been brought to Broadway) to the fantastically funky electronic "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In" from HAIRCUT.

If you've ever seen and loved a Luhrmann film, you shouldn't be disappointed by this fantastic album. It celebrates the works you know and love and introduces you to this modern master's other, equally wonderful works.

5 out of 5 stars a standard...a classic.......2007-07-08

This album lives up to its title...there truly is something for everybody on this set. When Elvis came back from the army...he immediately grabbed onto his place as the best ever and didn't look back. His first album Elvis Is Back and this album Something For Everybody might be the greatest one-two punch since his first two albums Elvis Presley and Elvis.Surrender was a number one hit for him and shows off his voice well. There's Always Me demonstrates Elvis' vocal power.Gently is a beautiful, tender work from Elvis that has escaped the years for some reason.Put the Blame on Me is a vehicle for the king to show off.I Want You With Me allows Elvis to prove he can still rock.Feel So Bad allows him to show why he should be regarded as one of the best r&b singers ever.

5 out of 5 stars I wore this LP out!!.......2007-05-14

I played this LP all the time and drove my college dorm roommate crazy in 1965. I played the slow side to go to sleep by (am a very light sleeper and it helped me fall asleep) and played the fast side to stay awake by. I could not possibly pick a favorite song. However, I would like to point out that the song "Give me the Night" IS REALLY "Give me the Right." It is a must have for any Elvis fan, especially with the extra songs added. I have already replaced my LP with another one in the 80's and, of course, have bought the CD to enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. I have never tired of listening to the songs on this LP/CD.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis at his best.......2007-05-12

Whether you are a child of the sixties or the new millenium you cannot help but like this Album. It is Elvis at his most romantic. You will want to play it whilst you and your babe are snuggling by the fire side sipping wine with the lights down low.

5 out of 5 stars The last real Elvis........2006-07-18

This is the last real Elvis recording before he started his "film career".

4 out of 5 stars Something Extra.......2005-04-28

In its original form, SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY wouldn't qualify as one of Elvis' greatest albums. While a solid enough package of songs overall, the 1961 LP boasts neither any hit singles nor any particularly stunning musical moments. Its division into an A side of ballads and a B side of rockers makes for some repetitive stretches, and the decision to hijack what would have been its strongest number ("I Feel So Bad") for a single required RCA to pad the album with a rather out-of-place movie tune ("I Slipped, I Stumbled, I Fell"). The result, as the title suggests, is a decidedly mixed bag, with a few strong performances ("There's Always Me" and "Gently" stand out among the ballads; "Put the Blame on Me" and "I Want You With Me" highlight the rhythm side) amid a lot of undistinguished filler. Not bad, certainly, but very much an album geared toward the Elvis enthusiast.
As reissued on CD, however, SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY is an altogether different and starrier collection, effectively anthologizing the King's 1961 non-movie work and proving decisively what a riveting and gifted performer the post-army Elvis was. This startling transformation is accomplished by a mere half-dozen bonus tracks, opening with the classic "Surrender" (which showed Elvis scaling new highs as a vocalist and introduced a greater degree of complexity in his records' arrangements) and continuing through the celebrated singles "I Feel So Bad," "His Latest Flame," "Little Sister" and "Good Luck Charm," all of which rank among the King's very best 1960s work and several of which would make the short list of his greatest songs in any era. Similarly impressive is "Anything That's Part of You," a melancholy ballad which almost prefigures the heart-rending performances Elvis would start committing to tape nearly a decade later. The addition of these outstanding songs turns a largely mediocre album into a tight, tough forty-minute compendium of one of the King's better years, and a package truly worthy of its name.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2004-02-20

Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11

After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16

When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13

This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.

I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.

So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!

1 out of 5 stars ... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

Alternative Funk In Hip Hop Form....Each song has it's own flavor, which when combined with the other tracks forms a product that can only be described as HOT! The tracks zig-zag from underground, to commercial funk, and then back again creating an addictive blend of genres. "Another Day" takes us on a trip through Bludshot's life, from the classic party tracks to the disturbed inner thoughts and feelings he so vividly conveys. With a smooth, hypnotic flow gliding over both incredible beats and live instrumentations, this CD is solid from top to bottom. It's party time!

This album is amazing from start to finish. It's so much better than most of the stuff on the radio right now. This guy is very talented and shows major potential. The production on this record is impressive and is of the same quality level of most major label releases. I can't say enough!! If you like hip hop you will love this CD. It's just surprising to me that it's been such a well kept secret for such a long time.

I stumbled upon this album on I tunes and rushed out and grabbed the Cd. This album is tight from beginning to end. Kind of reminds me of Eminem - much better than Encore. Favorite song is Another Day. Great flows and beats. Bludshot should blow up with this album. Peace & stay crooked.
