4.5 stars from one of rap's legends.......2004-12-23
Almost 3 years passed since his last album, the mediocre "4,5,6" but G Rap Giancana returns with a great album. One of rap's don's, the album cover and skits are fitting, tying in "Scarface" & "The Godfather". Packed with 15 songs and little guest appearances you get enough of G Rap to satisfy you. Out of the 15, there is 1 or 2 that I skip, 1 classic snd the rest are good or great songs. The production is much better than on his "4,5,6" and his lyrics are as sharp as they were in the mid 80's. Dr. Butcher produces 5, J Stank does 3, Rich 5 & Fade do 2 each, and Haji, A Evans, E Thompson each do 1. A must have rap album.

One Gangsta Movie!!!!!.......2004-04-16
1998 was a great year for hip hop. It's just sad that this EXCELLENT marvel in storytelling from Kool G.Rap went virtually unnoticed by most hip hop fans. Roots of Evil goes back to where Live And Let Die left, as G.Rap, in his greatest from, produced some of the greatest storytelling I personally have ever heard on record. Listening to this album(just like Live And Let Die) is like watching a straight hardcore gangsta film. It's filled with gritty, explosive moments throughout. Here's the review:
Album Highlights: DON'T skip ANYTHING on this album. NO FILLER. One movie all the way through.
Production: Thumbs up. Nothing spectacular, but the tracks G.Rap's storytelling style.
Lyrics and Subject Matter: Thumbs way up. It's like a "Live And Let Die Part 2."
Originality: Thumbs way up. NO ONE was coming like this in 98.
The Last Word: Absolutely entertaining album from G.Rap. It might have been slept on, but I still appreciated this album from him. As with his first three albums, G.Rap ultimately proved to me that he is one of the all-time greats in hip hop, and his spot is WELL DESERVED. Overall, if you can locate a copy, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND this album, especially for the fans of deep, precise storytelling.

DEAD RECKONING.......2005-12-24
ROKY ERICKSON & THE ALIENS-THE EVIL ONE: As delicious a slab of downright devilish dementia as ANYTHING Alice Cooper ever conjured up, this ex-13th Floor Elevators head case (literally---he fried himself in the psychedelic 60's Syd Barrett style, though at least he still sporadically records) exhumes a real winner here. Produced by former Creedence bassist Stu Cook, the song titles read like an old Saturday afternoon MONSTER FEATURE marathon: CREATURE WITH THE ATOM BRAIN, NIGHT OF THE VAMPIRE, I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, and IF YOU HAVE GHOSTS, to name a smatttering. All are shrieked, shouted, and screeched in Erickson's patented Charles Manson-meets-Frankenstein delivery (Now THAT would be a movie!), convincing even the casual listener that while Ozzy and Rob Zombie may SING about demons, this cat is the truly unhinged one, and actually HAS them. Check out the frantic rock and raunch disemboweling of DON'T SHAKE ME LUCIFER, the haunting ode IT'S A COLD NIGHT FOR ALLIGATORS, or the comparatively serene (but still creepy) CLICK YOUR FINGERS APPLAUDING THE PLAY at you own risk---Roky Erickson is an audio exorcism that will leave you either disgusted or amazed, but never EVER bored! (Unlike a certain bat biting Beezle-boob). RATING: FIVE BLOODY HAMMERS
Roky rocks..........2001-01-10
My uncle used to be his manager, so that's how I learned about him. Of course, I just blew it off initially as some garage band he was hanging around with, but Roky has some rockin' good music! My faves on this album are: Creature with the Atom Brain: I crack up when he talks with the creature ("...but you're not Buchanan!"). Also my favorite Roky tune. Don't Shake Me Lucifer: Old fashioned loud rock 'n roll. I Walked with a Zombie: How many folks could write a song (covered by REM) with lyrics consisting solely of "I walked with a zombie/I walked with a zombie/I walked with a zombie last night." over and over and make it sound good? Night of the Vampire: Good Halloween music. Play this and the cover of Burn the Flame on the tribute CD. He has a lot of great tunes, however he also has plenty of less memorable ones. This album has many of his better songs.
This is the best intro to Roky's weird world.......1999-06-09
Black Sabbath only talks about being paranoid - Roky really brings you into his insane world, and it's worth the trip.
Does Satan better then anybody because he's objective........1999-05-09
Roky lives behind a porno store and next to a trailer park in Austin,Texas. He needs your help! This is his best most cohesive peice of work.It puts the whole human and sub human experience to the Bo Diddley beat and has an aural sheen that will remind you of anything good you've heard in music. He uses the same mythology as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath but, can summon the fury of both those bands with just his voice. Some albums don't gain a wide audience because they blow. That is not the case here. This is the best album you have never heard or heard of.But it and cry.Buy it and boogie.Buy it and hide in the closet so the cops don't find you.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best.......2005-06-07
Probably one of the most underated albums out there. If you like serious, dark, smart, inspiring, hustler type music, than this is straight for you.
The Absolutely Most Offensive Thing.......2002-08-19
The absolutely most offensive thing about this album is that it never got the props it deserved. It truly establishes Mr. Rap as the Mario Puzo of hip hop (whom I am sure he was influenced by considering the puppeteer's hand). The greatest story teller in hip hop, who despite clearly being a "gangsta rapper", still manages to get on a lot of backpacker albums. This is due to his undeniable talent which transcends genres. This concept album is clearly KoolG's masterpiece. Anyone who enjoys well put together storytelling is sure to enjoy the cinematic lyrics on this musical trajedy. Not even Shakespeare could have created a protagonist who takes the path of the tragic hero while so delighting the listener with his lyrical wit as Rap has. Did I mention I'm an English teacher? In my professional opinion, Kool G. Rap is one of the great American poets.
A different route.......2000-07-15
In this CD, Kool G. Rap took a new path to what you are used to if you are a fan like I am. I rank him tops of my favorite rappers. G Rap is one of the originals to bring the gangster image to the East. This CD proves that. He linked up with some producers in Mesa, AZ to do the album. It has a style like no other album that came out in 1999. It didn't get on the radio unless it was underground radio. A friend and I just happen to see it in a record store and bought it. Everyone reading this review should cop this. Its hot!!
