It's been a nice surprise to see High Rise being recognized as one of the best of '06. The reviews have been amazing and it turns out that the record is acheiving top 50 on itunes for weeks in a row. We've also been receiving some unsolicited radio play all over the country. I want to thank all of you who've been so supportive from it's very quiet beginning. I encourage the sharing of music, so if you know someone that might like a song off High Rise burn or share it with them. Ok? We started out selling High Rise on itunes and hard copies via 2minutes59.com Now the growing interest has pursuaded us to put the records in stores. Right now we're striking an agreement with The Coalition of Independent Record Stores / Junketboy. So, High Rise will be available in traditional hard copy exclusively through independent record stores. I'll share a list of these stores soon so you'll know where you can find it in your city! Don't forget about the February tour with Tim Easton. Dates are posted on my myspace homepage. Happy New Year M

5 out of 5 stars Stop and think.......2007-05-03

He makes me think from the head and from the heart, this Matthew Ryan. Because of this I own every CD he has produced. This latest piece maintains the calibre and quality that endears me to his music and to his lyrics. Sweet. Did I say sweet?

5 out of 5 stars What a beauty.......2007-04-10

Though this is my first contact with his material, Ryan has apparently been around awhile, tagged with the dreaded "alt country" label. Whatever that may have been about, this is another type of creature, combining a grit and beauty rarely seen in today's pop music. Surrounding sumptuous melodies with a combination rock-and-ambient instrumentation (much better than I'm making it sound), this is a superbly crafted & heartfelt piece of work, cinematic in its scope & delivery. More to come, I hope!

Pretty Ricky pretty much have sex on the brain, and with hits like "Grind with Me" and "Your Body" off 2005's Blue Stars winning the Miami foursome overnight superstardom, you sort of can't expect them to mess with the formula. That explains the obvious if-it-ain't-broke approach the boy-band of brothers took on this, their sophomore CD: If song titles like "Up and Down" and "Push It" don't say it all, lyrics, as in the unapologetically raunchy ones to "Personal Trainer," most certainly will. Look beyond the sleaze (some of it borderline sweet, as in the line "I've been thinkin' about you all day/In a nasty, passionate way" from "So Confused"), and what you'll find on Late Night Special is a whole lotta talent, though. Pretty Ricky is the current decade's answer to Jodeci, with a little Bone Thugs thrown in; "On the Hotline" brings the heat of the latter, and "Make it Like it Was" steps up with the taut hooks of the former. --Tammy La Gorce

1 out of 5 stars If "0" was an option, that's what I would've given this.......2007-07-12

Awful, awful, awful lyrics....why does it have to be all about SEX. Can we sing about something else....why do lyrics today have to be so raunchy, just straight up nasty! Are they that crazed for SEX. Teens today need to know that other things exist other than sex, violence, and drugs...there's nothing "special" about this at all.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Ricky Is Something Special!.......2007-05-01

So I was kind of skeptical about this cd. But I gave it a try anyway. And I am pretty glad that I did. The cd is great! All the songs are good and the boys blend the vocals and rapping perfectly. The rap lyrics, could have been stepped up a bit though. The beats are well produced too. Overall, I say Pretty Ricky did their thing on this album. They don't even begin to compare to Jodeci, but they are worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Late NIght Special.......2007-04-10

Pretty Ricky was pretty much inspired by Jodeci and Usher to record this hot album. This album is very sensual and sexual at the same time. I love this album. This album seems destine to surpass their previous success. The growth and maturity of their lyrics, production, and vocals, coupled with their innate ability to connect with virtually any market that shows the diversity and expansion of these superstars. Forget everything else on the menu-This group is your one and only LATE NIGHT SPECIAL.

1 out of 5 stars Oh, no; not these guys again..........2007-03-27

I'll admit it; I never was much of a Pretty Ricky fan, especially after listening to Bluestars. I mean, I like sex as much as the next guy, but that seemed to be all these guys ever talked about -- and it didn't help that they have very, VERY below-average rapping skills (and Pleasure's singing is pretty okay). And this trend continues on Late Night Special.

Now, I won't say that nobody likes Pretty Ricky; after all, this album DID debut at #1 on the Billboard 200. But I have to say that this is another one of those cases where I looked at the other reviews and now I'm asking, "Did we all listen to the same album?" And aside from all the usual sexual talk, the guys still rely on dated rhymes, like "let me do you after school like some homework" ("Leave It All Up to You"), "you got me feenin' like Jodeci" ("Love Like Honey"), and, once again, "if I'm lyin', I'm flyin'" (the title track).

As was the case with the first album, the guys aren't very impressive when they DON'T talk about sex either, mainly because considering the way they normally rap (lyrics AND style), it's kind of hard to then take them seriously (especially Slick). This is evident on "Stay" (but Pleasure's singing is pretty God-awful on that song too) and the necessary song about clubbing, "Push It Baby". And "So Confused" is aptly titled because the chorus is about being in love with a girl who's taken, but then the verses contain their usual dirty talk.

This album also contains a pretty statutory song, the aforementioned "Leave It All Up to You". But in the long run, maybe that isn't HORRIBLE because teenage girls are probably the only people that'll pick up this album. Like I said before, I have nothing against sex, but if that's all you talk about AND you're wack, then it's really a turnoff. I'm going to have to pass on this late night special and see what else is on the menu.

Great blues guitarists are about tone, mood, and style. Being nimble helps, but intensity and passion more often exist between the notes. Rick Holmstrom revels in this abundance on his first album in five years. A West Coast veteran who backed harp greats William Clarke, Billy Boy Arnold, and Rod Piazza, Holmstrom can swing with the best of them. But 2002's controversial drum-loop-powered Hydraulic Groove showed the guitarist expanding blues boundaries rather then repeating past sounds. His fourth solo release retreats from those techno trappings, concentrating on a tough yet loose vibe driven by a stripped-down band of bassist/sax player Jeff Turmes and drummer Stephen Hodges, best known for his work with Tom Waits. Holmstrom kicks off with one of the album's five fiery instrumentals, slinging out resilient, ragged lines that build until finally exploding into the immortal riff from "Rumble," a nod to Link Wray, also no stranger to gristly tone. There's a sure sense of balance and tension as Holmstrom expertly weaves his gripping solos between the taut rhythm section's own dusky rumble. John Lee Hooker, another master of atmosphere, is the reference for "'77 Red V8" and a raw, instrumental take on Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"--one of only two covers--gets an unusually sleazy treatment thanks in part to Turmes' strip-club-style sax. Holmstrom is an effective, unfussy vocalist with an understated croon perfect for this album's dusky quality. But it's his guitar that really sings on Late in the Night, as it takes us on a rain-drenched stroll to the dodgy side of town. --Hal Horowitz

5 out of 5 stars Late Night Piano . . . For Your Ears Only.......2007-04-03

For passionate music lovers like me, listening to this compilation CD provides a great entertainment with its relaxing sounds of jazz piano music. I love all the timeless melodies in this collection of piano works that are full of majesty and virtuosity as played by a bevy of the most influential jazz pianists of all-time such as Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Erroll Garner, George Shearing, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Teddy Wilson, among others. It has a little bit of everything for your listening pleasure starting off with Erroll Garner's signature piece, "Misty" to the last track, Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges' "Just A Memory."

"Misty" has that tranquil beauty that whispers to your ears down to your heart and soul. I love it to death that I listen to it with a few repeats. "Moonlight In Vermont" by Oscar Peterson Trio and "As Time Goes By" by Teddy Wilson and Gerry Mulligan have that calming effect that soothes all your cares away. Count Basie's performance in "She's Funny That Way" is so full of innate charms that shows off his majestic style.

The First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald, sings gorgeously the intro of "You Go To My Head" to her version of "Going Out Of My Head" with Duke Ellington's accompaniment on piano. One great Bossa Nova tune made it to the list, "Chega De Saudade" by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Bill Evans plays a Cole Porter gem "I've Got You Under My Skin" in a swinging fashion.

This collection of beautiful piano works is perfect for a late night listen.

Wholeheartedly recommended.

Album Description

This is the perfect setting for acoustic guitarist Earl Klugh, playing strong melodies (including such standards as "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," "Laura," "Mona Lisa" and "Two for the Road") while joined by strings and several horns in an orchestra arranged and conducted by Dave Mathews. As usual for a Klugh session, the guitarist sticks mostly to the themes and does not improvise much, as he never considered himself a jazz player; but the overall effect is quite pleasing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My favourite late night flight!.......2007-05-10

Earl Klugh enjoyed incredible success with his self-titled debut album in 1976 and with follow ups that included among others, personal favourites like Living Inside Your Love (also released in 1976), 1977's Finger Paintings, 1979's Heart String, the Grammy Award winner, One on One (with Bob James) and, just before this one in 1980, "Dream Come True". Klugh was the veritable Jay-Z of the jazz-fusion world back in the 70s and 80s, in the sense that he rarely if ever, allowed a year to go by without releasing at least one very good album.

Many considered this particular album (also originally released in 1980) a risky departure but his fans loved it and I was one of those fans. I think the album broadened his appeal because his next album, 1981's Crazy for You (another of my most loved) was his first album to go gold.

On paper, it sounds simple enough: Klugh plays 13 well-known songs on his acoustic guitar with the impeccable precision that he's renowned for. These are all standards - songs like "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "Laura" and "Mona Lisa" - and Klugh mainly plays solo, though on some cuts he plays with a full orchestra (arranged and conducted by Dave Matthews). The sound always remains basic and sparse though. He is joined by a handful of musicians mind you; there's acoustic bass, piano, rhythm guitar and Latin percussion here and there, and there are even people like Marcus Miller on bass on a few selections and Dr Gibb on percussion on "Jamaica Farewell".

But this is mostly about Klugh's tasteful and intimate sound, with lush and sweeping strings and horns in the background. It's truly beautiful and absolutely perfect for those late nights as the album title suggests. There isn't a dud to be found anywhere on this CD but I still have my favourites: "Nice To Be Around (Nice To Have Around)", "Like A Lover", "Laura", "Triste", "Two For The Road" and "A Time For Love".

Klugh took the theme just one step further in 1984's Nightsongs (cleverly subtitled "More Late Night Guitar"), which if possible, I love even more. For the orchestration on that album, Klugh tapped both Dave Matthews and Don Sebesky and with songs like "Theme From "The Pawnbroker"", "The Look Of Love" (Klugh's version was the first I ever heard), "Nature Boy", "Night Song" and "See See Rider", and with help from people like Barry Eastmond on keys, Brian Brake on drums, Sammy Figueroa on percussion and a special appearance on "Night Song" from Toots Thielsman on harmonica, this is also one not to be missed. Also look out for "The Shadow Of Your Smile" with Ron Carter on bass, Grady Tate on drums and a wonderful piano solo from Eastmond.

Earl Klugh went on to produce many a phenomenal album, way too many to list here but I'd say to any Earl Klugh fan or any fan of acousitc guitar - your collection is not complete unless have these two now iconic albums in it.

5 out of 5 stars the best classical jazz guitar album of all time.......2006-05-31

for jazz enthusiast, this album is a must and if you don't have it your missing the greatest guitar melody of all time; its a stress-relief music that is so gentle to the musical ears particularly the rendition of EK " LIKE A LOVER" that one could possibly describe it as if your listening it in paradise!be sure to get a copy of this masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect For Late Night's Listening Enjoyment.......2003-11-17

I was introduced to Earl Klugh music by a friend way back in early '80s. Since then I have followed his recording career because of my love for guitar music. My late father owned a number of LPs of Chet Atkins, hence, my great appreciation for guitar music. The greatest influence in Earl Klugh's life is Chet Atkins, and I believe that he is as equally talented and creative as his idol.

I have collected some of the albums he recorded, "Living Inside Your Love," "Magic In Your Eyes," "Finger Paintings," "Heart String," "One On One" (with Bob James), "Sounds And Visions, Volume 2," "The Best of Earl Klugh - Vol. 2 (CD) "Late Night Guitar" (CD)and "Solo Guitar" (CD). This is the best Earl Klugh CD I own, next to "Solo Guitar." It has excellent material and impeccably interpreted by one of the greatest acoustic guitarists of all time, from the initial track Jerome Kern's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" to the last track "I'll Never Say Goodbye." It's just perfect for easy listening and relaxation.

My personal favorites aside from the first track includes "Like A Lover," "Triste," "Tenderly," "Two For The Road," "Jamaica Farewell," and Paul Williams' "Nice To Be Around."

Highly recommended! I guarantee it will be a lifetime of listening enjoyment!

4 out of 5 stars A Little Late Night Guitar Music.......2001-12-16

I was very glad to see this come out on CD, since my old cassette tape went south (just like all of them do eventually). This collection made me an Earl Klugh fan. Songs like "Jamaica Farewell" and "Mirabella" also got me more interested in acoustic guitar and learning to play it (albeit pretty raggedly). I would have added a few more Klugh gems to this collection, since it's rather short. But overall, for relaxing music, this is a fine CD.

5 out of 5 stars "WHEN IT'S TIME FOR LOVE...".......2001-03-05

put on "Late Night Guitar," Earl Klugh's masterpiece, to set the mood off right. Songs like "Tenderly," "Mona Lisa," "Like a Lover," and my favorite, "I'll Never Say Goodbye (The Promise)" put one in a state of pure relaxation and a desire to be with the one you love. Earl's playing is so melodic and filled with so much emotion, you're completely taken in by his artistry. From first song to last, you're hooked. The flow of this CD is simply beautiful. One of my favorite periods in Jazz is the '70's and some of the best artists (Noel Pointer, Grover Washington Jr., David Sanborn to name a few)who came out of that era of Jazz-Fusion continue to be my favorites. Earl is one of them. I've got a lot of his work and this is what I consider a classic. A must have for Earl Klugh fans.

Hi, my name is Jayson, and I am 13 and a half years old. I was over at my friend Brian's house, and his sister was listening to this CD. She is cool but she is a private person. She didn't like us practicing karate, so she turned up her stereo, and my friend Brian and I ended up practicing karate to the CD. I think everyone should own this CD, and I would like to get a copy for my birthday. 5 stars.

Product Description

Hailing from Peoria, Illinois, THE FORECAST exploded onto the indie rock circuit in 2003 with their insane live performances alongside bands including PLANES MISTAKEN FOR STARS, HEY MERCEDES and MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK. They quickly earned a rabid following in Peoria and the Midwest as word spread. With respect to their predecessors, THE FORECAST give the genre a well deserved ass kicking, ratcheting up the intensity and doing away with any pretension. Inspired by influential bands such as BRAID, RAINER MARIA and THE GET UP KIDS, their sound is solid beyond their years. Since their inception in 2002, THE FORECAST have played over 200 shows and entered the studio with AJ Mogis (CURSIVE, BRIGHT EYES, THE FAINT) in 2003 to record their debut EP, Proof Of Impact. The passion and sincerity of their approach attracted the attention of Victory Records and plans for Late Night Conversations began.

5 out of 5 stars Pass me that bottle, please........2007-06-09

My main problem with The Forecast--especially this CD--is that if I'm not drinking (and it's usually whiskey if this band is involved), it has to be autumn or the sound just sounds out of place. I remember the first time I heard this CD. Of course, I was deceived by Victory saying they were for fans of Bright Eyes and Limbeck, but I found something I would enjoy far more. (I'd tell you what they sound like, but there're a million other reviews that compare them to a million other bands.)
You see, I'm from central Illinois--just a mere two hours from Peoria. I got off work around 1:30 in the morning (I delivered pizza for Papa John's) and went to wal-mart to spend some tip money. I saw this and the artwork drew me in. It reminded me of an old barn near where my best friend used to live. It was nostalgic. I bought it and left.
I was on track four by the time I got out of town and turned down a lonely gravel road on my way home. There was corn to right of me, corn to left of me, and a full starry sky above me. How can I explain this to someone who never grew up in that kind of atmosphere? There is an air about the night when the corn is just ready to be harvested: autumn is near and soon the world will be lulled to sleep by the falling of the leaves, the whole landscape seems at rest.
If anyone is from Amish country, you'll know how it feels to drive down a long gravel road and know that another pair of headlights is a rarity. That is what I feel when I listen to this album--making out on desolate country roads where the only lights you can see are the stars and the moon, driving through quiet towns at 2:00 where you'll only have to stop at one stop light (if any at all), walking down to river with your best friend just to have something to do.
I'm not a "country mouse" by any means, believe me, but I never did care much for the city, and will always have a soft spot for the place I was raised, even if I do claim to hate it from time to time. And that's what I think this album is really about.

5 out of 5 stars Good indie.......2006-12-21

I really enjoy this band. Mid west indie rock has not let me down yet, and the dueling male/female vocals works nicely (I agree with the Rainer Maria/Braid comparisons). They're really good live too; they played like they really care, no matter how many were in the audience. Exercise Demons, and Seating Subject to Availability are my personal favorites. Their new album is also worth checking out.

1 out of 5 stars I finally get it!.......2006-04-04

In the past, I used to distance myself from certain rock genres because of a bad first experience. I'd be introduced to band, not like it, and claim the entire genre as being 'not for me'. The Forecast, however, has changed how I feel. I, personally, love a heartfelt emo record just as much as the next guy, but only because I was introduced to Jimmy Eat World and Spitalfield a couple of years back. Those bands allowed me to embrace the entire genre as a whole, and expand my emo knowledge. Imagine though, if you will, that I was new to emo. You, in theory, hand me a copy of "late night conversations" and tell me to listen. Of course, I hate it, and lose any interest I may have had in the genre. To make a long story short, the only good that came out of 'late night conversations' (an underproduced, generic, stale piece of s**t) was the revelation that came post-listen. Never judge an entire genre by the first or second band you're introduced to (from said entire genre). Not every metal band is Iron Maden. Not every punk-pop band is blink 182. Not every nu-metal band is linkin park. Not every 'emo' band is jimmy eat world. Every aspect of music has it's ups and downs, and the forecast is clearly one of the downs.

Now that I've bored you with an entire rant about nothing, I'd like you to PASS on 'late night conversations'. With your help, the forecast won't sell another record, and, in turn, leave the scene forever. Not recommended, duh!

4 out of 5 stars victory records gets a hit with this one!.......2006-02-01

with victory records, it seems like the bands and albums they release are either hit or miss (not to mention, how they false advertise with their band comparisons). i would have to say they got a hit with the band "the forecast". after listening to this record, it's not nothing incredibly ground-breaking or new yet i still can't really find anyone to compare them to. i do know that it's a fairly solid record with a fresh/exciting sound. the vocals are duel, with a guy singing most of the notes but the girl shannon sings some of the songs choruses and let me tell you; she can sing! the forecast are starting to get a hype around them, and it's a deserving one. they're talented and they can produce some interesting music in an overcrowded scene. if you like emo/indie rock with a mix of male/female singing check these guys out. i'm sure we'll hear more from these guys in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Shannon rules.......2005-09-06

This album is so great!! I saw a commercial for the album, and "These Lights" became my favorite song without even hearing the whole thing! My favorite songs on it are "Seating Subject to Availability", "Late Night Conversations", and "Exorcise Demons" If you're looking for something good and new, you should get it.

5 out of 5 stars NICE.......2002-03-20

This CD is a smile waiting to happen. As soon as a I popped it in the cd player I was dancing around my apartment, shaking my hips to the caribbean beat, completely forgetting the bad mood I was in 10 minutes before. The beats and guitar work are great, Jimmy Buffett's vocals on some of the tracks are balm to the parrothead soul (esp his take on No Woman No Cry) and I have long been a huge fan of Nadirah Shakoor, since I heard her solo while Jimmy took a break at his Cincinnati concert one year. The live ambience only adds, with the energy and noise of the crowd as much a part of the listening experience as you own tropical island fantasies. Buy it for the rhythms, buy it 'cause it's Jimmy, buy it 'cause Nadirah is on it....just do yourself a favor and buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Great Songs and Great Musicians.......2001-01-22

This is a wonderful album. It's great to hear these guys, normally confined to being Jimmy Buffett's backup band (aside from all their side projects), get a chance to shine together. This is a tropical album, but some of the songs are very jazzy, which is guitarist Peter Mayer's background. One of the songs (Soltar) invokes Santana, especially in Peter's tasty guitar solo and Hammond organ work of Mike Utley.

The songs range from dance in the streets party music to lazy relaxing poolside vibes for a sunny summer day. The album was recorded live at Margaritaville Cafe in New Orleans, so the crowd interaction is cool and the jams are authentic. The only thing keeping this from being 5 stars is that Jimmy Buffett pokes his head in for a few songs and just doesn't fit the vibe. His vocals detract from the great Nadira's on "Cairo" and, while "No Woman No Cry" is good, he doesn't fit there either. Sorry to you guys who liked him on this album, but he didn't belong here.

5 out of 5 stars Coral Reefers at their best.......2000-12-17

If you're only into the core of the Parrothead Cannon, then this CD isn't for you. No Son of a Son or Changes here. The emphasis is on the talent and brilliance of the Coral Reefers. If you lay in bed at night thinking about going back to the island, or dream about going down to the Banana Republics and listening to the local bands, consider yourself a fit for this Album. Nadirah Shakoor fans will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A must have CD for any Parrot Head.......2000-09-21

I am a 20 year Buffett fan. I've had this CD for 2 weeks and have'nt stopped listening to it for the last two weeks. Bubba's singing of "No woman, No cry" is absolutely incredible. I keep punching track 13 over and over again. His never released "Come on in" is in typical Buffett fashion, have to listen to it 10 times before you say, "Wow, he did it again." You get to hear how truly talented Robert is on the steel drums. Trini's rendition of "African Friend" is super. People talk about taking one CD with them on a deserted island, this one is it. Steel drums and Bubba, what else is there.?

5 out of 5 stars Club Trini at its best!.......2000-07-10

Club Trini's best cd yet! The live recording is powerful, just like their music.

When the mid-'70s Jonathan Richman traded the "snotty," Velvet Underground-tinged sensibility of the original Modern Loves for a strummed, twangy electric style and an even lighter percussion sound, he didn't give up his convictions. The 22 cuts here, drawn from Rounder releases from the '80s and '90s, are as joyful and unironic as anything cut during those years. He explicitly acknowledges his roots in the innocent '60s on "Parties in the U.S.A.," both lyrically and in its borrowed "Hang On Sloopy" riff, and he reaches back to the Collins Kids' rockabilly nugget for this collection's title track. Richman celebrates urban delights ("I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar," "Cappuccino Bar," "Vampire Girl"), but these tunes find him digging ranches ("Circle I") and island jaunts (an expansion of "Bermuda" includes a pointed jab at the old Lovers' "She Cracked"). Openheartedly, he even cut a whole album in Nashville (well, Springfield, Missouri) style and a long-player in Spanish. Finally, "She Doesn't Laugh at My Jokes" sounds like the product of a much less damaged Brian Wilson circa The Beach Boys Love You. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Get to know Jonathan!.......2007-03-18

When I was a teenager in the mid 70's living in NJ, there was a NY FM station (WNEW) that was just the only one I listened to - one dee jay, the morning man, Dave Herman, used to occasionally play an artist that was out of the mainstream, simple yet with something going on. He turned me onto many of my favorite groups at the time, The Roches, Jonathon Richman, Ramones, T.Heads. In later years he did the "something old, some thing new, borrowed & blue" allowing listeners to program thematically a small 4 song set - I entered several times; in fact, he was invited and read our wedding invitation (1980) on the air...I digress. That was where I first heard one of the tracks off Beserkley Chartbusters, either Government Center or The New Teller (still love that one). Anyway, I went nuts to buy it, instead found original The Modern Lover's album, and it was very different; had JoJo's love of the Velvet Underground all over it, with several added layers of snottiness - when Beserkley Chartbuster's had come out, JoJo must've had already visited Bermuda and was off in his own direction apparently...(listen to THIS album, being reviewed, to better understand). I loved Roadrunner, bought the next JP & ML album (with alternative version of the world famous Roadrunner on it) and started following the band around the tri-state whenever they played. Only thing is that JoJo never played anything from the albums I loved - he was taking off his shirt and crawling around the stage singing that he was "a little dinosaur", or running around like "a little airplane". It was great. Over the years I purchased the vinyl albums, but somewhere around the Egyptian Reggae era, I stalled.
I listen to Yahoo Launch radio and they played (on my station) some JoJo a few weeks ago, the song where he explains his trip to Bermuda's impact on his musical values and leanings, and I was back - back in my old room, headphones plugged in, listening to a stack of albums. So I ordered up several JoJo albums. And now my 8 & 9 year old kids can't get enough either - I cracked out the old vinyl and played them 'Pablo Picasso' (who was so jealous, he "turned the color of an avocado") on their own record player, and they didn't believe it was from the same dude - "that guy who has fun singing but not like a regular singer".
Anyway, my 5 stars are obviously based not just on content, eh? But you owe it to yourself to get to know JoJo, listen with your heart and pretend that life isn't slathered with reality, and come on a fantasy trip, where there are parties somewhere right next door, with potato chips and guys playing guitars, and that you can walk right in and start dancing...and perhaps hopefully end up dancing in a lesbian bar.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2003-03-02

I, at one point, owned all of Jonathan's Rounder material. "I, Jonathan" is a great album; "Jonathan Goes Country" is better than you would ever imagine. But on all of Jonathan's Rounder albums there are some songs I really feel are not needed. "I, Jonathan" and "Jonathan Goes Country" both contain remakes of some of his better late seventies and early eighties cuts for Beserkly and Sire--"Corner Store" and "That Summer Feeling" for example--which pale in comparison to the originals. What this best of collection does, contrary to some of the other reviewers' opinions here, is give you a very good representation of his best material for Rounder. If you really want a good collection of Jonathan, buy this cd, pick up "Jonathan Sings," and "The Beserkley Years: The Best of." I would hope to God that you would already own "The Modern Lovers."

4 out of 5 stars Of course it ain't perfect but who's counting.......2002-12-17

As the liner notes state (which by the way are a great addition to the package) favorite songs are going to be left off.

It seems they went heavier on the Richman albums that aren't as popular and rather skim on the classic discs. Why do we get four cuts from the mediocre "Having A Party" and only two from the his much agreed upon masterpiece "I,Jonathan"? Why four from the OK "You Must Ask the Heart" and only two from the great "Modern Lover's 88".

It's a good disc because simply it's Jonathan and it's a good sampling of a phase of Jonathan's life. Keep in my mind this isn't an introduction to Jonathan's music, just a snapshot of a particular time. This is a good album to have if you can't afford the albums the songs individually came off of. You are missing out on some classics by doing that however (When Harpo played his Harp,That Summer Feeling). I suppose you are getting treated to some classics too (New Kind of Neighborhood,Parties in the USA). My only complaint with this is the complaint I have with all "best of.." collections is that it never is the best of and often times it can be the worst if. (I really think Reno is a terrible song).

Four Stars for the music, Three for the idea.

5 out of 5 stars Richman offers a solid overview of his years on Rounder.......2002-06-07

This 22-track collection could have featured some of Jonathan's forays into instrumentals ("Blue Moon," "Grunion Run") or spoken-word pieces ("1963," "Twilight in Boston"). There, I'm done quibbling... What this disc lacks in variety, it compensates by showcasing Richman's strengths as a songwriter. His songs from this period (1988-95, on the folk-based indie label Rounder) generally revolve around relationships ("You Must Ask the Heart"), music ("Fender Stratocaster"), dancing/partying ("I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar," "Parties in the U.S.A."), rural joys ("Circle I"), urban delights ("Reno"), and the minutiae of daily life ("Everyday Clothes"). The simple rock 'n' roll arrangements place Jonathan's often humorous lyrics front and center. Action Packed is a solid introduction to Richman's post-Modern Lovers career. Fringe Benefit: The liner notes include Jonathan's charming third-person account of his "First Twenty Years in Show Business."

4 out of 5 stars "Jonathan, don't get all excited...but I do!! and I am!!".......2002-05-22

Jonathan writes rock and roll songs. They could have been written in the 1950s or 1960s, but there's also a sense of timelessness about them. Like Ray Davies, Jonathan doesn't write about Big Subjects. He writes about everyday clothes, cappucino bars, love, and occasionally Bermuda or Vampire Girls for fun. And like Ray Davies, his focus on the everyday, combined with his big heart, makes him one of the best rock songwriters ever.

This is a grand collection of the music he did for Rounder Records. Jonathan sharpened his focus and honed his craft during his time on Rounder, and this terrific selection of songs shows that. Most of the music here is Jonathan as a solo artist ("believe me, it's better that way") putting his heart out there, as open as the sky and beautiful as the moon. The material ranges from the rockin' (Parties in the USA, Dancing In The Lesbian Bar, Fender Stratocaster) to 50s-style country (Reno, The Neighbors) to wistful balladry (The Girl Stands Up To Me Now, You Must Ask The Heart). Every song on here is a gem waiting to be discovered.

There's not much any reviewer can say that can match the songs themselves. Jonathan's interviewers and attempted biographers all find a guy who hasn't got much to say about his life or his music. That's because his life is his music, and his music tells you all you need to know about Jonathan. His music is clear and honest and speaks from the heart, and in the final analysis, that's exactly what music is supposed to do. To Jonathan's credit, that's what he's done since the Modern Lovers days, and that's what he says he'll do "until it stops being fun." Let's hope it stays fun for a long, long time.
