5 out of 5 stars wonderful music.......2007-06-22

The classic sound of Genesis was almost in full swing as early as Trespass. Peter Gabriel does a fantastic job with his singing ability throughout the album, along with the rest of the band.

Upon first hearing the album, I was surprised that the production is quite different from the future Genesis albums. It doesn't sound as good. It's muddy, but sort of tacky as well. It doesn't sound pure or delightfully attractive, like on Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound. Still, it's good enough.

As far as songwriting goes, these are some really well-written songs. Not *quite* as memorable as what would happen as early as Nursery Cryme, but really, just one step down in terms of quality. I love the album anyway.

"Looking for Someone" has a really neat atmosphere that reminds me of walking through a forest, not to mention a spectacular build-up of piano work near the end. "Visions of Angels" sounds like the Moody Blues which is always a good thing.

"The Knife" ROCKS like Genesis never really rocked before. Seriously, it's a special song in the catalog of Genesis in that it's a lengthy jam that's mostly dominated with guitar soloing and a few fast-paced vocal lines from Peter Gabriel. Quite unusual for Genesis to tackle something like that but they're really GOOD at it, that's the amazing part.

Fantastic album.

4 out of 5 stars Genesis was clearly on their way.......2007-04-19

The last album to feature Anthony Phillips, Trespass is a unique and wonderful album. Though the band has not yet reached the mastery they would see with Nursery Cryme, they already managed to become accomplished musicians at 19-20 years old! One of the highlights of the album is Stagnation, a very looked-over Genesis classic about a post-appocolypse world. A beautiful vocal rendition by a young Peter Gabriel. The other highlight is, of course, the Knife, a song about a violent revolution in which the revolutionaries of today become the dictators of tomorrow. This song is the closest Genesis has ever come to heavy metal.

Overall Tresspass is a great album and there is not too much bad to say about it other than the boys were still growing to the perfection that they would see on the next few albums. A definite must-buy.

3 out of 5 stars The real true first Genesis album.......2007-02-28

This album is the second but should be considered as the first release of the band. With this one, the band was free to explore and create, this was not what happened with their first release.
From Genesis to Revelation)

All the tracks are good but not great. Real close to Nursery Cryme in my opinion. If you like old Genesis lie Nursery Cryme or Foxtrot, you should own this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Visions of legends all around.......2007-01-28

Wow! What an improvement from the first record. Genesis grow up fast and produce a classic prog masterpiece. Anthony Phillips is a big part of this record and they knew it, they almost broke up after he quit shortly after this record was released.

5 out of 5 stars Delicate acoustic textures and gloominess.......2006-12-27

This is a fantastic album from 1970 that shows Genesis moving beyond the charming pop songs of their debut and bringing a bit more of a prog feel to their pieces. Of course, Trespass is still a far cry from sophisticated, "full blown" prog albums like Selling England by the Pound (1973) and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974), but it is still excellent nonetheless. I guess it is worth pointing out that a folk revival was in full swing in England around this time, and the guys in Genesis were apparently not immune - as such, a "pastoral serenity" colors many of the pieces. Come to think of it, I really appreciate the gloominess of Trespass and the rich textures generated with several acoustic 12-string guitars being played at once.

The lineup at this early developmental stage included Peter Gabriel (lead vocals, flute, accordion, percussion); Tony Banks (Hammond organ, piano, mellotron, 12 string acoustic guitar, vocals); Mike Rutherford (bass guitar, 12 string acoustic guitar, cello, vocals); Anthony Phillips (12 string acoustic and electric guitars, dulcimer, vocals); and John Mayhew, drums, percussion, vocals). Although not the classic lineup, the Genesis sound was definitely beginning to emerge and Anthony's delicate guitar playing is excellent throughout. Unfortunately, Anthony was taken ill (with bronchial pneumonia I believe) and when coupled with a growing anxiety, was forced to leave the band (he was replaced by Steve Hackett in 1971). In addition to the overall sound, rough sketches of both the story-telling and aggressive playing found on the follow-up album Nursery Cryme (1971) appear on Trespass.

The six pieces on Trespass are fairly short by prog standards and range in length from 4'14" to 8'56". In large part, the songs are very quiet and loaded with 12-string acoustic guitars and piano, with the single exception of the excellent (and aggressive) closing track The Knife, which features some thunderous playing on the electric guitar. Like a lot of folks, this is my personal favorite (along with White Mountain) and certainly would not have been out of place on Nursery Cryme. It is an extremely aggressive piece and the screams at the end are positively hair-raising - they freak me out every time I listen to the track in fact. For those of you that liked this combination, Nursery Cryme is somewhat similar (although the bizarre nature of the lyrics was bumped up a thousand-fold on Nursery Cryme).

I used to own this on vinyl and the CD version has not cleaned up the murkiness of the vinyl recording much at all - this really is not a big deal though, given that it only serves to enhance the generally dark mood of the album. For those of you that are curious, my understanding is that this version by MCA sounds better than the 1994 remastered version by Phantom Sound and Vision, although the reviews are somewhat mixed.

All in all this album is very highly recommended in whatever format you can find it in.

2 out of 5 stars The end of an anomily..........2006-06-05

I hate it when life's little mysteries prove themselves to be too good to be true, and sadly this album is a shining example of that disappointment. Pushmonkey's self titled album was amazing, it was solid, cohesive, innovative, compelling, inspiring... it was a diamond in the rough, somehow this Austin band put out one of the greatest albums of the 90's and no one seemed to notice. They should have been superstars for just half of that album. Then came this follow up, it just wasn't as raw, it left you wondering what happened, and if that first album was just a fluke. It was uninspired, cliché and played out. Sure it has it's moments with "Myself" and "Mine To Waste" but that was about it ("Diamond" had been a crowd favorite since their early days but it felt like they just kind of threw it on the album), and neither one of those songs measured up to anything off their self-titled album. Now going from "Maize" to "Pushmonkey" was an epic leap, but "El Bitche" (even the title comes off immature and not to be taken seriously) was a disappointing down step to a band that had nothing but potential.

1 out of 5 stars Push the destruct button on this sad monkey.......2005-07-05

UNREAL! NOT TO BE BELIEVED! IMPOSSIBLE! However, it's true; this cd is such utter CRAP that it defies explanation.

Their "Pushmonkey" cd is, without a doubt, INCREDIBLE. After very little thought, in fact, that is the ONE cd I would choose if I had to pick just one to listen to for the rest of my life. So incredibly moody, and melodic, and powerful, and rocking, and mellow; hits all the bases. "El Crappy", however, CANNOT possibly even be the same band, and yet, after looking into it, it is! Incredible.

These songs SUCK, period. "Nu-Metal Rap-Rock" NOISE!!! What the Hell is wrong with these guys? Didn't they realize that they had an INCREDIBLY unique and AWESOME sound going? Didn't they realize that the listening audience was BOUND to "catch up" to them? Too impatient? Wanted to "cash-in" on the "new wave" of crap rock, guys? Shame on you!!!

Listen, people: DON'T even THINK about buying this crap; even the people who reviewed this recently and said they liked it had to admit that "it had to grow on them", and "at first they had to agree with the bad reviews", etc; what does that tell you? Doesn't sound like an overwhelming endorsement, does it, when even its SUPPORTERS have to make "disclaimers" about it. I should NOT even THINK about listening to their new cd; I should ban them forever for putting out such COMMERCIAL HORSECRAP like this; idiots!!!

This must be the most INCREDIBLE turn for the worse in the history of music; these guys should be FLOGGED for intentionally turning away from the synergystic-genius they found and created just so they could try and "make a buck"; traitors to art and integrity! Don't support this crap; don't buy it; DON'T!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Old fan: it had to grow on me.......2005-02-23

I am an older fan. No recording can capture this bands' stage presence and the earlier albums rock! That aside: The first time I listened to El Biche I reacted like some of my fellow reviewers. It is definitley not like earlier ventures. Seems like the result of experimentation; its not too polished and bland though. A little ballad heavy. Although some lyrics or short riffs walk the line of cheesy or typical rock rap hybrid stuff ("thing" "master breaker"), they still work in Tony's melodic trumpet ("tag"), vulenerable lyrics ("mine to waste") and some good old fashion blunt aggression to balance it ("chemical skin" & "carbomb"). They have kept their identity. They do seem to be going in a few different directions but I think El Biche is definitley worth it. I'm proud of this central Tx band. Looking foward to the next one: Year of the Monkey.

4 out of 5 stars great undiscovered band.......2004-08-18

I'd almost agree with some of the reviews that suggest getting only their self-titled CD...however, much like that one, the songs on this one have also have to be seen live to really get what's going on. El Bitche is not as consistant as the self-titled cd but it definitely has a lot to offer, especially for metalheads as well as pop lovers. Yes, it runs that entire gamut of music. They played a lot of these songs live forever before finally putting them on an album and for that I say, "FINALLY!" Can't wait for the new cd coming out soon.

4 out of 5 stars I don't know what you are talking about, this is good stuff!.......2003-10-23

so everyone thinks pushmonkey took a turn for the worse with this album...on the contrary, i think this album is easily as good as their self-titled album. i'm from austin, and i have seen them several times in concert (including one more this weekend), and everytime they have put on a great show. the song "chemical skin" is such a great song to rock out on. "myself" and "mine to waste" are two of the best pushmonkey songs ever written. just about all of the other songs on the album are great as well, although there are a few mediocre songs--most albums have at least a mediocre song or two. i listen to everything--from slipknot to bread to phil collins, there is nothing i dislike. if you like pushmonkey, this album is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Remastered early masterpiece.......2006-06-21

Trespass has always been my favorite Genesis album, but the sound quality of the original releases was, well, awful. No longer. This remastered edition is so clear and smooth that it actually brought a tear to my eye.

I love the Genesis lineup and music all the way until ...And Then There Were Three..., but each succeeding album seemed to lack the punch of Trespass, though a few came close (Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Dance on a Volcano). If you like Peter Gabriel, or Gabriel-era Genesis, you'll probably love this remastered classic.

5 out of 5 stars Visions of Angels, all around, dance in the sky...leaving me here forever, goodbye.......2005-11-04

If they had just made this one album and dropped off the face of the Earth, it would stand as an obscure classic of folk-prog that would command hundreds of dollars at record fairs. As it stands, they first became Progressive Rock standard-bearers and then later took over the world commercially, so this album kind of gets overlooked as a signpost on their career trajectory, largely because it is the last not to feature the drummer and guitarist whom they would recruit in the months following its release, and who would solidify what many if not most feel is the "classic" lineup of this legendary group.

That said, this is a magnificent album. The elaborate song structures they would become known for, with the challenge always present of how to cohesively marry disparate sections of contrasting melodic and rhythmic content, begin to come to the fore here. All 6 tunes have charms all their own, particularly Visions of Angels (perhaps about the disorienting ecstasy of the Divine?), Stagnation (about a man who uses his innumerable riches to bury himself in a vast subterranean bunker to await Armageddon), Dusk (a serene meditation on mortality with a gorgeous flute solo) and the first of the signature epics for which they would garner their reputation, The Knife, with its refrain of "Some of you are going to die...martyrs, of course to the Freedom I shall provide!" could truly be torn from today's headlines, be they about Bin Laden or Bush or both. Amazing to think that the incredibly emotional and urgent vocals in these songs are handled by someone barely 20 years old at the time... they bear the imprint of someone much older, somehow. But then, that's why PG is a household name after 3 and a half decades, right?

Another thing: make sure you get the European version that is the Definitive Edition remaster, it is sonically eons ahead of the muddier US version available on MCA. Overall, this is a must have for Progressive Rock fans in particular and lovers of good music in general.

4 out of 5 stars Genesis came of age with its second album.......2004-01-25

Genesis' 1970 second album "Trespass" was a huge jump forward from "From Genesis to Revelation". The group went from being a collection of songwriters to a band. The album's sound quality isn't great, and lead guitarist Anthony Phillips and (especially) drummer John Mayhew aren't in the same league with Steve Hackett and Phil Collins, who joined for the next album. But you can hear all the pieces in place here for the band Genesis was to be over the next decade. This isn't the first Peter Gabriel-era Genesis album you should buy, but if you like early Genesis, you'll definitely want to pick this up eventually.

The album's closer, and show-stopper, is "The Knife", the hardest rocker on the album, which tells the story of a rebel leader willing to line his path to glory with the bodies of his supporters. "Some of you are going to die, martyrs of course for the freedom I shall provide." When I bought the album circa 1980, the song made me think of Iran's Khomeini; today it may remind you of Osama. In the early 80s, Genesis was performing revitalized live versions of their old songs. They did a shortened version of "The Knife" on the "Duke" tour. I'd dearly love to have heard their take on "Visions of Angels", one of the most unsung pieces in the Genesis repetoire. "Stagnation" is an example of the songwriting style that Hackett later called "songs that started out at point 'A' and occasionally ended at around point 'Q'". It goes through many changes, including a unique Tony Banks pitch-bending organ solo and a riff that you will recognize from live versions of "I Know What I Like". The album has more overdubs than most Genesis albums.

(1=poor 2=mediocre 3=pretty good 4=very good 5=phenomenal)

5 out of 5 stars What they were to become is all there to see and hear.......2002-08-04

Even though it was only their second album, Trespass is many miles ahead of From Genesis To Revelation. The songs on this are the fruits of their labors during the summer period when the five members all were living in the McPhail's cottage and practicing literally all day long. Phillips and Mayhew departed after this one - the former by his own choice (he developed bad stage fright, for one) and the latter by suggestion from the rest of the band. (He's not a bad drummer, but he really didn't provide much creative input.)

Some don't like Trespass because they think it's too simplistic, but in reality it's actually quite involved and shows a quantum leap in writing ability for five public school boys barely out of their teens. The delicate balance created through layered 12-string guitars, organ, flute, mellotron, and distant harmony vocals produced an innovative blend that oozes with pastoral atmospheres and melancholia and in places almost seems to stop time. The lyrics are also very involved, occasionally pretensious, sometimes cryptic, but often thought-provoking. Gabriel's personality is already coming into its own here - lots of color and emotion are on display.

MCA still owns the rights to this album in America, and they as yet haven't gotten around to remastering it... which, according to the informed opinions of quite a number of audiophiles, is actually a good thing, believe it or not. The imported "remastered" version has, as it turns out, been subjected to a form of noise reduction that does some very unkind things to the delicate acoustic guitars. The short of it, then, is get the MCA version if you can, and remember: a little tape hiss never hurt anyone.

Believe it when I say this is an excellent Genesis album from start to finish. I listen to this one perhaps more than some of the other Gabriel-era output because it has a unique and decidedly melancholy atmosphere about it that I love. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Good only as an historical artifact + Peter Gabriel.......2001-12-19

Tresspass, released in 1970, was finally given the "Definitive Edition Remaster" CD treatment in 1994, although you'd be hard-pressed to find it anywhere. (I had to order mine through Amazon.) Unfortunate, since I can't think of another Genesis album that so sorely needed remastering. The flat production found on Trespass makes it, in my opinion, one of their least listenable. And the six relatively simplistic songs (by comparison to their later work) just don't hold my attention.

Ahh, but then you have to take into account The Peter Gabriel Factor. He's fascinating to listen to anytime, anywhere. And this -- Genesis' second album -- features his voice throughout, although sometimes a tad buried in the mix. Witness "Stagnation," for example (an apt title if I've ever heard one). Interestingly, strains of "Stagnation" will be heard on Marillion albums a decade later, and even Genesis will borrow from their own material to repeat the keyboard/flute line that begins 6:57 into the song on later albums.

Pre-Phil Collins and Steve Hackett (drummer John Mayhew and guitarist Anthony Phillips made their final recorded appearance with the band on this album), this version of Genesis lacks the depth and complexity that even their very next follow-up album (Nursery Cryme) would exhibit. Consequently, the songs all tend to sound the same and none are as overtly weird or prone to odd meters as they were to become. One ("Dusk"), in fact, sounds like something you'd hear in the Sixties -- all flowery and sweetly melodic. Yuck.

Still, this album scores 3 Stars from me because of its historical value. This is, after all, Genesis. (Yet, I still can't even begin to listen to most of Genesis' '80s output, absolute Pop Pablum For The Masses that it is.) And it still features Peter Gabriel, who was just coming into his own as a vocalist/lyricist. Consider his performance on Tresspass Peter Gabriel Lite. Or Pre-Weird Gabriel. Whatever. It's Peter Gabriel. You gotta love him.

If you're already familiar with Genesis, especially the Peter Gabriel-era version, you may, with a bit of effort, find Trespass to your liking. (You'll probably really enjoy "The Knife," in fact; it's the most Genesis-like of the songs on Trespass.)

If you're a fan of the '80s and '90s, Phil Collins-led version, you're likely to hate this album. It's not complex enough to be one of their classics, yet it's not upbeat and Top 40 enough to hold the attention of listeners who prefer their music short, upbeat and saccharine-sweet.

Bottom line: You might want to borrow someone's copy of this one before you buy it.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview of Zorn's soundtrack compositions........2005-10-24

Over the past twenty years or so, John Zorn has built up an enormous library of composition for film, released on sixteen CDs (cleverly titled "Filmworks I", "Filmworks II", and so on...) on his Tzadik record label. For a neophyte, this can be a bit much to tackle, as such, this album, "Filmworks Anthology: 20 Years of Soundtrack Music" has been released to provide an overview of Zorn's soundtrack composition.

As an overview of Zorn's work, this succeeds well. It also appears that another goal was to represent every volume, as at least one piece is drawn from each (volumes VI and VIII get two cuts, I and XII get three, and III and VII get four). Just about everything in Zorn's diverse catalog of film soundtracks is covered-- movies, documentaries, pornography, cartoons and commercials (certainly none I've seen!) are all represented with a suitably diverse array of pieces, from gamelan to string trios to surf rock, Zorn pretty much covers a wide array of sounds and moods-- if nothing else, the diversity of these 28 tracks is a testament to his vast skills to compose in virtually any environment. I could make a few arguments about what cuts I would have picked, but by-and-large, the compilation is a rather good and thorough overview, and the cast of performers is immense, with virtually all key players in the downtown scene involved to some extent or another.

Another notable point about this release is the artwork-- packed in a digipack with a pair of photos of Zorn (one from '86, one from '05) and stills from the various pieces littered throughout the liner notes, it certainly looks great. And speaking of the liner notes, Zorn offers a superb essay on film soundtrack composition and appreciations by musicians Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, Jamie Saft and Cyro Baptista (all of whom appear to some extent or another on the music) are included.

I've got currently about half of the filmworks series and I found value in this overview. Several of the individual pieces hold together far better than this recording does, but it certainly does a great job providing an impression of Zorn's diverse film scoring career.

5 out of 5 stars Curious about Zorn?.......2005-10-23

Considering myself a casual fan of John Zorn I have been at times either annoyingly put off or enthusiastically engaged with the diversity of his music. Admittedly, It can be daunting for a Zorn novice to find a suitable entry point in which to begin navigating through the extremities of his musical output. This new collection, which pulls material from the sixteen releases (thus far) of his FILMWORKS series, is everything the curious could want in a well-rounded introduction.

The selections chosen for this disc make for an exhilarating listening experience from start to finish as the focus jumps from one musical genre to the next, from cartoon scores to punk rock to jazz and surf music. Most selections early on clock in at under 4 minutes, with many others zipping by under just one. All these various styles meld together so effortlessly that it's impressive it all comes from a single creative mind.

The packaging is also deserving of mention, as the CD is housed in a fold-out digipack case with two booklets attached inside. In one of these booklets Zorn describes his methods and self-imposed rules in creating music for film (as well as for dealing with snoopy film directors). The other booklet features short essays by a few of Zorn's collaborators on what the creative sessions were like. There are also many photos from the films the music accompanies. (So far the only films I've seen with Zorn's scores are "Trembling Before G-D" and "Protocols of Zion".)

5 out of 5 stars A Little Known Classic.......2005-10-03

This is actually a tight hip hop album from the second golden era. WC, Ice Cube, Ice T, Lord Finesse, Gang Starr, Black Sheep, it's all good. Even Sir Mix-a-Lot's song is something you can kick back and nod your head to.

5 out of 5 stars This cd tight........2004-05-22

this cd is tight i like all the rap songs 1-11. Track 12 sucks i dont know what the other guy talkin about. My favorite tracks are #5 and #11 i like every track but those are my favorite. #5 is performed by PPC(Penthouse Players Clique) who worked with Dj quik and were apart of Eazy-e's Ruthless Records around this time.#11 is a tight song with W.c and coolio i dont really know much about wc but that he was with westside connection and had a group named w.c and tha maad circle. this cd is tight get it right only for the gangsta rap music lovers like me get this if you really like gangsta rap.

3 out of 5 stars Minimalist, un-atmospheric but strangely likeable.......2004-02-22

Ry Cooder is a great musician with massive talent and he's always Walter Hill's first choice to score his movies. I loved Cooder's music for Last Man Standing but his score for Trespass is well...ugly. It's grungy, dirty and filled with lots of strange sounds. I'm not sure why he took this particular route but it doesn't exactly match what is happening onscreen.

Some tracks, such as the opening credits are in typically undeniable Ry Cooder style. Others are twisted and craggy, but they grow on you. Tho more like hemorrhoids than a head of hair. The second last track 'King of the Street' is simply awesome and is Ry Cooder performing at his best. It's worth buying the CD just on it's own. The final track is a tacky country western song that you'll like but not admit to.

4 out of 5 stars Classic NWOBHM Anthology.......2007-03-17

If you're a fan of the celebrated New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement, you have to love what the Castle/Sanctuary label has done to bring the most obscure NWOBHM bands' material back to life. One of These Days - the Trespass Anthology is a perfect example. Here is a band that, aside from an appearance on the Metal for Muthas II album, never really made the kind of impact that bands like Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Judas Priest, and Motorhead did on the scene. Trespass wasn't as pop-oriented as Def Leppard, as powerful as Priest and Maiden, or as gritty as Motorhead, and their straightforward hard rock style probably wouldn't be classified as metal by today's standards. Still, the band's White Sprit meets Demon sound definitely rocked, and they did play a role in one of metal's most influential scenes.

The good folks at Sanctuary have painstakingly compiled the available Trespass recordings, cleaned up the sound considerably, and provided NWOBHM fans another must-have 2-disc anthology. You get all of the band's studio material (previously collected separately as The Works and the Works II), plus previously unreleased BBC sessions, all digitally remastered, plus extensive liner notes, all for just a little more than the price of a single CD. Like all of the Sanctuary NWOBHM anthologies, it is well worth checking out, whether you're a die hard fan of that scene or you're just interested in checking out an overlooked piece of metal's history.

        Product Description

This brand new band from Israel, has nothing in common with other bands named TRESPASS you may have known or heard of. This powerful trio (Keyboards-guitars-vocals, bass & drums) offers us its first album "In Haze Of Time" (2002). These young (Around twenty-eight) but experienced musicians have been playing in numerous local bands, with very diverse styles, until they got together in this group. Gil STEIN (Keyboards) received a classical training, and was even offered a scholarship in Berklee which just means he is a complete virtuoso ! This album reveals astounding Progressive rock pieces, English sung but with instrumental sequences dominating. You may think of EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER, FOCUS, UK or THE NICE, but these bands can't be considered as influences: the leader and main composer did not know them, nor any other bands working in this field, until the album's recording ! That's why this music is exceptional, a natural synthesis of classical, rock and jazz music, full of power, musical ideas and technical skill, with an excellent and modern sound. Moreover, TRESPASS composed mid-long pieces, very well structured, and avoids self-indulgence and endless soli. A sort of musical perfection ! Four years later, still on the Musea label, "Morning Lights" (2006) renews the pleasure to hear three virtuosos playing a mostly instrumental music in a more classical vein than before, influenced by BACH and VIVALDI, but enthusiastic and refreshing after all. Brilliant !
