Appalachian Stomp is an ideal starter disc for those just beginning to explore bluegrass. Mostly this is because its 18 selections are so immediately accessible. The "classics" here, in other words, are usually those infrequent bluegrass cuts to have gained radio recognition beyond a core bluegrass audience. That explains why along with timeless standards such as Flatt & Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" and the Osborne Brothers' "Rocky Top" we also get "Dueling Banjos" from the film Deliverance, a cut that is to classic bluegrass what Walter Murphy is to Beethoven. There are less immediately obvious choices too, though. If your previous exposure to bluegrass doesn't go beyond the Holy Trinity of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and the Stanley Brothers--for example, if you've never heard J.D. Crowe & the New South's stellar example of progressive bluegrass, "Old Home Place," or experienced Jimmy Martin lay down the law on his rousing "You Don't Know My Mind"--then you're in for a high-lonesome surprise. --David Cantwell

Album Description

"Stepping," or "step-dancing," is a high-energy, wildly entertaining African-American dance style that's been blazing across traditionally black fraternities and sororities for decades. STOMP THE YARD is a film featuring acclaimed singers NE-YO and CHRIS BROWN that pivots on a national stepping competition. Rivalry and brotherhood drive the action, but music is what makes this story move. That music is captured on STOMP THE YARD: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK. The disc boasts music not only from NE-YO ("Sign Me Up") and Chris Brown ("Poppin'"), but also THE ROOTS FEATURING MALIK B. AND PORN ("In the Music"); GHOSTFACE KILLAH ("The Champ"); ROBERT RANDOLPH AND THE FAMILY BAND ("Ain't Nothing Wrong With That"); E-40 FEATURING THE FEDERATION ("Go Hard or Go Home"); UNK ("Walk It Out"); CUT CHEMIST FEATURING EDAN AND MR. LIF AND PUBLIC ENEMY.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome to hear the old masters almost live........2007-03-27

It was an awesome experience to hear Ragtime and early blues played by the masters themselves. When you hear the music from their own hands, if not their own pianos, it makes the music immediate, and makes even clearer the stylistic differences of the various American musical pioneers. The sound quality is excellent. I'd strongly recommend this recording to anyone who enjoys early-20th-century jazz.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Ragtime of the Century.......2005-10-30

What a terrific CD. What a joy to add to your life. Everyone should begin their day with this Great Ragtime. We would all be much better.

As a former dancer, Flapper, wth the Charleston in my routine, I do appreciate Great Music. I'm not quite as good as I used to be, but neither are you, Gal. Will be 66 next birthday. Still have the rhythm and love life.

Put some spice in your life and don't let this CD get away. Please, just get it today.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction and sampling........2005-08-23

Prior to this album, the only ragtime I really knew was "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag". I don't know how this album fares for enthusiasts, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It introduced me to several different composers. The way the album is organized by giving you a two or three song block by each composer is good. As you listen to this, you can easily hear the different styles from one composer to another. As for the recording quality, I don't have any complaints whatsoever. Each note is clear without much noticable fuzz or hissing. The versions of Scott Joplin's songs are played a bit brash and speedy when compared to Joshua Rifkin, but I think they sound livlier because of it. Overall a solid release.

A dreadful "Let's Do It" by Joan Jett and Paul Westerberg is the only lame moment on the soundtrack of a flick that's destined to become the Rocky Horror of the '90s. The contemporary A list--Björk, Portishead, Belly, Veruca Salt, Hole and L7--all weigh in with new tracks; Björk's "Army of Me" and Portishead's "Roads" are standouts. "Season with Mockingbird Girl" by a Stone Temples Pilots spinoff called The Mad Bastards adds to the film's considerable hip quotient. --Jeff Bateman

Loved the CD - lot's of great tunes, including L7's Shove, Joan Jett's version of Let's Do It (great running song) and Bjork's strange, but compelling Army of Me.

4 out of 5 stars pot of sound variety.......2000-11-29

When I first got this CD after compulsively watching the movie several times over, I have to admit that I was a little bummed that not all of the songs I was expecting to hear were there. Over time it really grew on me and I have been quite please with the CD. I've picked up more of the music of the different bands featured on it. It's a great choice for someone who likes to keep a nice variety of sounds swimming in her ears. It has given me a taste of artists that I wouldn't normally have stumbled upon otherwise. See the movie if you want a fun & funky chick-flick. If it gets you revved you can expect to be dancing, hopping, bobbing & lipsynching to the soundtrack!

Product Description

Stomp Yer Feet! is a CD full of 15 songs for kids that won't drive parents crazy. Except for maaaaaybe one song you'll know it when you hear it! But seriously, the idea behind this CD is to try to provide great music for kids in a context that they are familiar with but with a new twist. You'll recognize most of the songs, but they are more folksy and bluesy this time around. It's my own Johnny Bregar twist on some of the classics. I hope you and your kids like it! I never thought that my first solo release was going to be for kids. Not that that's bad, but I just sort of pictured myself as a rock star and never imagined that the first song on my CD was going to be If You're Happy and You Know it BUT Maura and I had a baby boy named Tobias and... well, I started listening to kid's music a lot and found that I was wishing for something a little more fresh. I wanted something that had some soul and could groove a little. I mean kids are fully capable of enjoying adult sounding music, but you just need to sing something they can relate to. That's what this CD is all about. Most of the songs are all me, playing various instruments and implements but I got some help from the Ballard Singers, my brother Uncle Stan, my wife Maura and my son Toby. Oh, and Paul Elliott who is a mighty fine fiddle player. To make this a fully interactive project, rather than writing out lyrics to songs that you mostly know already, I'm providing song notes that you can share with your child. See if you can pick out the instruments and see if you can get your child to recognize them as well. How cool would it be if your kid could pick out a Fender Rhodes electric piano on the radio some day???

I first heard about this CD when it got a great review on NPR. I ordered it and love it. The music is updated age-appropriate sing alongs with a lot of strong blues and jazz influences. Perfect for my 18 month old daughter to listen to without making me want to pull ny hair out.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful mellow music for kids.......2006-11-10

My daughters (3 years old and 11 months old) both love this CD. I really enjoy it, too. Johnny Bregar has such a smooth, mellow voice. Despite having many upbeat songs, the CD is really calming. My favourite is Waltzing Matilda. My 3 year old loves I've Been Working on the Railroad so much she puts it on repeat, and we have to listen to it over and over and over.

Is there anything more inherently ironic than an IMAX film celebrating the global musical primacy of the foot? Already the most successful off-Broadway show in history (350-plus productions in some three dozen countries), Pulse ambitiously deconstructs several millennia of humanity's rhythmic heritage, a journey that wends from prehistoric African beats and Indian elephant processions to Brazilian Carnival drum bands, Spanish flamenco, American marching bands, hip-hop, house and so much more. The 21 performances here showcase the infectious conceit in all its flashy diversity: an audio travelogue that reaches beyond the original stage troupe to showcase many of its international inspirations, including the American Indian Dance Theater, Brazilian bandleader Carlhinos Brown (performing with Timbalada and Os Zarabe, his massive "Candyhall Beat" is also featured in a propulsive remixes by Police drummer/soundtrack composer Stewart Copeland and the UK's Mr. Bill and Mr. Ben), the Jersey Surf Drum and Bugle Corps, West Africa's Le Percussions de Guinee , and the Kalahari's Qwii Arts Trust Khoi San Music. The Stomp troupe, assisted by the film's other performers, somehow blend it all together on the dizzying "Beat Box," a forceful piece that virtually redefines the musical potential of the human body, while taking star turns on their own set pieces "Underwater" and "Rooftops." It's part history lesson, part philosophical rumination, powered throughout by a vibrant, expansive sense of human commonality. - Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome album..........2005-01-06

...and probably my favorite. A great collection of global sounds, that in the first track and by the end are all coming together in remixes and such. First of all the traditional music is amazing. About 10 or so tracks is just that, beautiful music, mostly from Africa.
Also interesting is a Karsh Kale track (karshkale.com). Kale is an Indian/American who combines traditional Indian with Western electronica.
Another one of my favorite tracks is called Flamenco, which is just that.
At the end of the album are remixes (think of African music with drum kits and keyboards). These tracks, especially the last one, which throws together elements from almost all of the different tracks, complete the album.
And of course the two STOMP tracks are cool too, but honestly I prefer the world percussion music on this CD over them.

When is the movie coming out on DVD? I never saw it, but discovered the soundtrack while listening to the radio.

5 out of 5 stars STOMP!.......2004-12-16

Stomp is a cultural sensation and it is quite a shame that more people don't know about them. Intially it was born out of percussionists not having the money for large expensive drum sets, so they set out and made their own percussion isntruments out of anything they could find: trach cans, brooms, lighters, sinks, basketballs, and even their bodies. They have revolutionized the drum world. Here again, they present audiences with something to take their breathe away and amaze them. But don't be fooled, Stomp did produce this soundtrack but only about one or two tracks are actually Stomp. Instead, Stomp set out to look at the world and see how they percieve percussion. How does Japan look at drumming? How does Spain? These questions are answered with full vivacity and color through Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey. The tracks are performed by traditional groups from all around the world. If you get a chance to see the IMAX film, do it. Some things work on IMAX, some don't this film deffinately does. Just listening to this music will make anyone's body start to move with the beats. It just goes to show that the world is connected in many ways we may not even see.

5 out of 5 stars Just try and remain calm when listening to this-if you can.........2003-02-26

This is an amazing collection (and the soundtrack to) called STOMP that showcases the beat-heavy offerings of the entire world through songs and pieces that rely heavily on strong dance beats and drums. Each of these pieces will shake your skull and have your heart pounding to the beat - from African drums to Asian cymbals-to the vocalized beats of Kalahari bushmen. The energy is maintained throughout the entire CD and it will energize you to no end - working out to music such as this may prove a tad bit to exhausting.

This is a great cd. First one that I bought of this group and I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging, Entertaining, Skillful.......2005-09-16

This live album shows off the dazzling talents of three dynamite musicians, revisits some excellent classic tunes, and (most importantly) makes a point of entertaining the listener. The Hot Club of Cowtown is an extremely talented trio of players (and singers) that avoids the common pitfall of talented players: trying to show off how talented they are.
Instead of trying to stupefy the audience with technical prowess, the Hot Club draws them into a synergistic musical experience, and that's why I love this album. You will hear excellent picking, soulful singing, searing solos. But most importantly, you will be entertained and have a great time.

If you've seen and got blown away by Bob Dylan's fiddler on his 2005 tour ... this is her band ... You got to love them ! :)

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs!.......2004-10-04

Though the style of music is quite unlike anything else in my collection and I stumbled across the CD on a fluke, I adore it! In fact, upon discovering it, I was so pleased with it that I played it for my whole family (ages 16 through 57), and it got a thumbs up from everybody. The songs have an old time traditional American feel to them and the musicianship is fantastic. (I hope to see these three perform live someday!) I love many of the songs, but I think my favorite is track 9, "After You've Gone." The best thing about the CD is that it makes me happy every time I listen to it, without fail. Highly recommended!

thanks to prairie home companion i was introduced to hot club of cowtown. they are positively wonderful with their fusion of jazz, country and standards. it's so great to hear young people breathing new life into "old" music! cowtown's hard driving energy is nicely balanced by their quiet finesse. may these people entertain the world for at least another hundred years.

Most of the tracks were excellent but some were a bit long winded.Tracks by Spencer Wyatt best on the disc and made it all worth while.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent olio of music styles.......2007-02-23

Do you like ethereal New Age? Gotcha covered. Does Boogie piano get your toes a-tappin'? Check. Is Swing more your thing? It's here. All fine reasons to add this sound track to your music collection. As for the movie, I like to think it Carrey's best work. The man has the most expressive face in Moviedom. Regarding the story, it's set in the early Fifties during the rabid Communist scaremongering headed by Senator Joseph McCarthy. One result was the blacklisting of suspected Communists and sympathizers in liberal Hollywood, of which our protagonist Peter Appleton became a victim.

5 out of 5 stars This movie is a slam dunk.......2006-10-29

To hear the roar of the crowd as the player goes in to slam dunk the basketball in the professional sports arenas, this film equals those thrills for the audience as Jim Carrey (Luke Trimble)takes us through the mind of someone that has amnesia and unwittingly becomes the hometown war hero set in 1945 period. Stars abound in this film like character actors Martin Landau and James Wittemore.Boy meets girl, they fall in love, then a twist in the plot as Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is accused of being a communist, similar to the Army McCarthy hearings for those old enough to remember. It all turns out like everyone wants.....Ed Lynch 10/29/06

4 out of 5 stars Boogie Majestic.......2003-08-07

This soundtrack is the best soundtrack I have heard in a long time. Bringing the swing big band music was fantastic.I wish they would have included Pennsylvania 6-5000 in the soundtrack though. This by far is the best movie soundtrack next to Swing Kids. So buy this soundtrack. This is real music.

5 out of 5 stars An answer for a question from Texas.......2003-02-15

Music fan from Texas, Yes both songs are there and as strange as it may sound, those where the two songs that cought my attention when I saw the movie. The one with the clarinet is called "Stranger on the shore" while the one with the piano is called "Boogie Woogie Stomp" I believe. The soundtrack as a whole is flawless and I strongly reccomend it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great live recordings of historical importance.......2004-11-11

The only mystery about this cd is why Delmark Records is marketing it as an Albert Ammons recording. Half of the numbers are recordings by Meade Lux Lewis, and two belong to Pete Johnson. They ought to have equal billing on the sleeve...
That aside, the music here is top notch. How often do you get to hear in-concert live recordings of these guys?
The music is frequently a lot looser on stage than in a recording studio, and that is clearly audible on this disc. Ammons & co take their time, they change bass figures a lot more than on the studio recordings, and they seem to have good rapport with the audience, which can be heard clearly on several tracks. It's great to hear how the crowd responds to the music with applause and shouting. It seems that a good jazz/blues audience hasn't changed much...
The sound quality is a lot better than you might expect, considering that the recordings were done in 1939, and the playing is uniformly excellent. In many ways, a record like this is a lot more interesting than a studio recording, if only because you get a true glimpse of a long gone era, and a very vivid impression of the music the way it used to be played in an authentic live situation.
In addition, the entertainment value of this relentless groove-based music hasn't decreased one bit in 65 years!
