This soundtrack offers a pretty standard mix of new songs, old chestnuts, and excerpts from the score (here by John Debney). On the new tip, Joss Stone and Patti LaBelle engage in an overheated battle of the divas on CD opener "Stir It Up," a bouncy piece of fluff that sounds more like Aretha Franklin circa "Freeway of Love" than classic soul. Other originals include Barenaked Ladies' "One Little Slip" (this movie's answer to Counting Crows' "Accidentally in Love" from Shrek 2) and the Cheetah Girls' peppy-but-bland cover of "Shake Your Tail Feather." But the real highlights are the songs performed by the movie's vocal cast, which includes Joan Cusack, Garry Marshall, Zach Braff, Steve Zahn, and Amy Sedaris. Their group cover of Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Don¹t Go Breaking My Heart," for instance, sounds as if half of them were drunk in the recording studio (and this is meant as a compliment.) Braff's a cappella version of "We Are the Champions" is smashing and Cusack and Zahn's take on the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" is completely demented. The kids will laugh; their parents will laugh even harder for completely different reasons. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

101 Dalmatians (Original Soundtrack)

Given the two belated live-action sequels and numerous other TV and video spinoffs spawned by Disney's charming 1961 animated original, the Dalmatian count is more like 1,001 by now. This reissued soundtrack (admirably restored in the late '90s by producer Randy Thornton) showcases the original orchestral film cues of George Bruns to good effect. While the composer's bright, lively work was largely fragmentary (originally written as punctuation for the film's turns of action and comedy), its components have been skillfully sequenced and gently edited here for a more cohesive listening experience. The film's most memorable musical moments remain Mel Levin's delightful trio of songs, "Kanine Krunchies," "Dalmatian Plantation," and, of course, the classic villainess romp "Cruella DeVil." Bonus cuts include both a bluesy piano rendition and Levin's decidedly goofy piano/vocal demo of the latter tune. A great primer to Disney's animation underscore philosophy, seasoned with one of the studio's most memorable songs. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

The Jamaican-born pianist Monty Alexander has worked with musicians such as Milt Jackson, Dizzy Gillespie, and Sonny Rollins, but over the years he has always managed to wed North American improvisation to reggae and Jamaican folk rhythms. This CD is a happy hybrid of all of the above. Alexander weaves his American rhythm section consisting of drummer Troy Davis, bassist Hassan Shakur, and guitarist Derrick Di Cenzo with the five-man Jamaican ensemble Gumption--who back up dancehall stars like Buju Banton: drummer Rolando Alphonso, guitarist Robert Angus, keyboardist Dwight Dawes, bassist Glen Brownie, and percussionist Desy Jones. The result: Imagine the Nat King Cole Trio sitting in with the Wailers and you'll get the CD's boppish island-breezed vibe. Alexander and crew stick to Marley's melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic structures. Spliff anthem "Jamming," title tune "Kaya," and "Could You Be Loved" can rock any sports utility vehicle or summer festival, while "Heathen" rings with Alexander's raindrop chords, piercing melodica, and ethereal tonal shadings. The ska-guitar scratches drive "Is This Love?" and Alexander's gospelish pianisms echo Marley's loving laments on "No Woman No Cry." Steve Turre makes a guest appearance and his splendid seashell sound heralds "I Shot the Sheriff." Alexander's plaintive composition "Nesta"--Marley's middle name--is spiced by Jones's Rastafarian nyabinghi conga rhythms and completes this jazzy "jump up" carnival. --Eugene Holley Jr.Customer Reviews:

A "Hip" Deviance.......2005-08-12
While a few of the songs are memorable hits ("Taking Your Love For Granted", and a personal favorite "Put The Weight On My Shoulders"), sadly there are several songs that just went too far in the attempt to modernize. The synthesized keyboards and drums are rather garish. This is early 90's music, so it is expected that one understands that garish keyboards and synth drums were the norm, but it can become difficult to find the music through all the synchopated pops and pizazz. The most distracting production decision in making this album was to place the vocalists on a flanger + chorus effect, making them sound like they are singing into a fan.
Probably the greatest reason why this album was somewhat of a flop is because the first and final tracks "Change The World" / "Change The World (Reprise)" has just about the corniest lyrics ever to be produced for a major Christian album...
If I wanted to change the world,
I would start by lovin' you!
And if lovin' was all we knew,
Ooohh baby, we would change the world!
We need to change the world!
(Repeat over and over and over again to a "hip", modern beat, until vomiting is successfully induced)
Not all is amiss. The theme of the album seems to revolve around coming back to God, giving hope for the distracted Christian. "Taking Your Love For Granted" is an upbeat, enjoyable song that takes the perspective of a repentant believer who recognizes that lukewarmness is inherently a disregard for the appreciation of God's love. "Stir It Up" reminds the believer that when the Christian walk becomes stagnant, revival is a willful action to perform, and it is his/her responsibility to re-focus on God, to make love of Him a proactive effort, and to remember Him, His power, and His word. "Put The Weight On My Shoulders" is a powerful song from the perspective of our Father, insisting that the believer hand all his/her burdens upon Him.
The rest of the album is good, but not great, mostly filler and casually thoughtful songs about faith.
