Stanislav Ioudenitch, who shared first prize with Olga Kern in the 11th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in June 2001, is the most deserving Gold Medal winner in Fort Worth since 1989. The winner then was Alexei Sultanov, another Russian-trained native of Tashkent, the capital of what is now independent Uzbekistan (but was then part of the former Soviet Union). The 29-year-old Ioudenitch, however, bears little resemblance to Sultanov, a fire-and-brimstone player who disemboweled pianos. Ioudenitch's Liszt playing (in the Rhapsodie espagnole and Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6) is not particularly thunderous, but is filled with ravishing color effects and fascinating detail. His Schubert (Nos. 2, 3, and 6 of the Moments musicaux) luxuriates in the composer's evergreen lyricism. And his performance of Rachmaninov's Sonata no. 2 (Ioudenitch courageously chooses the treacherous and dense 1913 edition instead of the composer's much-simplified, dumbed-down 1936 version) is expansively lyrical as well as grandly scaled. He can become carried away in his quest for meaningful detail, as he does in an affected reading of Bach's Partita No. 2. But Ioudenitch is more than just a pianist to watch; he is a refined and subtle virtuoso who deserves attention now. --Stephen Wigler

Having heard Ioudenitch in two live concerts and comparing to this recording, he is getting better and better as time passes. This recording shows his extremely sensitive musicality and the passion of his live performances on a couple of tracks. The beauty of his interpretations brings great delight to the heart. He is definitely not a piano banger, but a truely gifted musician whose technique is quite superior. I hope he is recorded in the near future with some of his most recent work, it is something to look forward to!!!

Stanislav Ioudenitch is one of the best. This CD leaves off his version of Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto. But it is still a great CD.

This man is extraordinary. His perception of music absolutely astounds listeners. He is able to play with such delicacy and attention, creating music that can be georgeously soft or brisk at turns. His passion exudes from everything he plays, transforming notes to melodies and sounds that take breath away from everybody that has the priviledge to listen. I recommend this cd with all my heart but, if you are lucky enough, see this artist in live concert, because he is undoubtedly one of the greatest pianists of our time.

Stanislav is extraordinary talent! You will find his performance amazing if you love lyrical expressionist style. He can bring extra feelings and passion to every piece of music. But if you regard Glen Gould the most, you can be disappointed.

This is a remarkable disc of music for the guitar. Steve Kostelnik displays the utmost virtuosity and musicianship on this disc. The Batchelor, and Mertz are dazzling displays of impressive technique. The Bach is sublime. The new pieces by Kulp are also very engaging and well played. A must have for any fan of the classical guitar!

Olga Kern shared first prize with Stanislav Ioudenitch at the 11th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in June 2001 and became the first woman to win a Gold Medal at the Fort Worth contest since Christina Ortiz in 1969. I am less impressed than the Cliburn's jurors were. In show pieces such as Liszt's Reminiscences de Don Juan, she certainly reaches decibel levels higher than those of Ioudenitch in the same composer's comparably flashy Rhapsodie espagnole and Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6. But if she's louder than Ioudenitch, she's also less compelling musically. Her performance of the Liszt fantasy on themes from Mozart's Don Giovanni lacks the flashing wit and depth of feeling revealed by such Lisztians as Gregory Ginzburg (Arlecchino), Simon Barere (Pearl and Cembal d'Amour), and Jorge Bolet (London Classics). In another Liszt transcription--of Wagner's Isolde's Liebestod--her tremolandos and her use of the sustaining pedal are too ponderous to provide the shimmering and glowing texture necessary to the music. And her performance of Scriabin's Sonata No. 9 ("Black Mass") lacks the requisite grotesquerie and menace. She is at her best in second-rate music--the Impronta Digitale of Judith Lang Zaimont and the neo-Romantic Sonata (Op. 26) of Samuel Barber. --Stephen Wigler

Olga Kern, age 26, was born into a family of musicians and began studying piano at the Central Music School of Moscow at the age of 5. Winning her first international competition at 11, she has earned several top prizes, including the grand prize of the 2000 Cantu International Piano Competition in Italy. Kern has already performed in many of the great halls of the world, including La Scala in Milan.

I was entralled with Olga Kern's performance when I saw her in San Jose several years ago. I was also incredibly lucky to be one of the students for her masterclass the following evening. To be honest, I wasn't that familiar with a number of the pieces she played in her recital, but I thought they were nothing short of amazing. She is a powerhouse, and my personal experience with her showed her to be a wonderfully kind, patient, and very witty person with simply phenomenal musicianship. Highly, highly recommended.

I'd have to say that, being from a younger, more receptive generation, my opinion of Ms. Kern is that of great regard. Having audited masterclasses and been to concerts, seeing her interact on the personal and professional level, it is easy to see that Ms. Kern's ability to project and produce in her abilities are much greater (and evidently more taken for granted) than other reviews would like to give her credit. Bravissima, Ms. Kern.

Great Music and Even Greater Musicians.......2001-10-29

This album contains an incredible selection of music played by the gold, silver, and bronze medalists of the '93 competition. I particularly enjoy Pedroni's performance of Isolde's Libestod, an incredible composition which he brings to life. But what makes this CD especially worthwhile are the Carmen Variations performed by Kuleschov. Though Horowitz wrote these variations and played them regularly, they were never written down. Valery listened to recordings of Horowitz performing the Carmen Variations hundreds of times and transcribed what he heard as closely as possible to the way Horowitz played the piece (the composer would more aptly be listed as Horowitz-Kuleschov). So what you have here is a rare recording of an incredible piece that can't be found anywhere else. This alone makes this disc worthwhile to have.

Joyce has a big heart and huge sound.......2006-09-15

I've seen 2 master classical pianists, Mitsuko Uchida, and Joyce Yang. I have Mitsuka's 5 CD box set of Mozart on Phillips. I was told it took Spivey Hall, on Clayton College Campus in Atlanta 20 years of consecutive invitations before they could schedule her recital, Halloween, Oct 31st 2002. I was 2nd row, what I call the handkerchief section. Violinist Mark Steinberg accompanied her that memorable evening of Mozart's five violin Sonatas. My favorite performance still, was Joyce's Silver Medal recital inside Harris Concert Hall, in Aspen, July 2nd, 2005, performing Bach, Vine, Scarlatti, Currier, Chopin & Liszt. I sat front row center at Lakewood Cultural Center for Joyce's March 23 2006 recital, and 4th row again in Aspen for her Prokofiev piano concerto with the Aspen Festival Orchestra, July 2nd 2006. All 3 times I was greeted by her with a hug backstage Aspen and in the public lobby at Lakewood. She has a magnetic, sparkling, bubbling, wonderful spirit and personality, is constantly laughing off all the well deserved fans praises, and even introduced me to her Mom. I told her it's becsause of her sophomore yr high school tour to Decatur, Illinios' Millikin University recital, that my Mom attended that I discovered her prior to winning the Van Cliburn silver. Oh, and Alexander Kobrin, did not "blow away the competition", during the 17 day competition in the opinion of some judges and reporters of the Dallas Morning News who proclaimed "Joyce Yang...won the heart right from the start... She's a brilliant pianist and million-volt presence on stage". Whew, I'm going again 4th row to see Joyce with the Colorado Symphony Oct 1st 2006. Also reccommend Jennifer Lim, Canadian pianist, Juillard & Curtis Institute trained, with perhaps the finest Chopin recording on the Green House label.

Makes Horowitz and Rubenstein Sound like novices !.......2006-02-27

Listened to her perform at Barns at WolfTrap much the same works that are on the CD. Yang is an exceptional performer who really does excel in all of her work. She is a rising star and this CD is a must have!

Definitely Yang, and not Yin: An Inspiring Young Pianist to Watch! .......2005-10-24

Joyce Yang won the silver medal at the recent 12th Van Cliburn Competition. She also received first place for the best performance of a contemporary piece; and first place for the best performance in chamber music (with the Takacs string quartet.) If you have a chance, take a look at the DVD of the competition--where her chamber performance is briefly shown. A testament to the respect and chemistry between her and the Takacs string quartet is that she has been invited to perform with them on one of their next tours.

Joyce Yang is young but she is not a newcomer--she came from Korea to study at Juilliard and won a competition to perform with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of thirteen, playing the same Prokofieff Concerto #2 that she performed in the final concerto round of the Van Cliburn. Her playing is clean and musical. There is a maturity and a grasp of the music that is palpable. Plus, she has a charismatic personality that imparts passion and a plucky sense of humor. What I can't figure out is how someone with such thin arms and fingers can play with such stamina and musicality. She "gets" really complex music, like the Vine sonata...and then rolls right into the Liszt right afterwards.

Joyce Yang has the potential to become a truly great pianist. How she matures as an artist and grows as a person will be watched with great interest. Buy this CD!! I hope she records with the Takacs Quartet--buy that one too if it comes along!

Ms Yang plays with a maturity that far exceeds her age of 19. For those that have had the privalege of viewing her performance at the 12th Van Cliburn Competion know the pure depth of emotion she expresses through her music. Treat yourself to her wonderful performance. Your spirit will soar!

These are actual performances that helped Jon Nakamatsu win the gold medal at the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The pianist's personality is the most obvious element, as it should be. His Brahms sonata is outstanding, meeting the extravagant technical demands head-on while making music at every moment--a fervent, youthful performance completely appropriate to the music. In the Chopin, another technical showpiece, Nakamatsu also keeps the focus on the poetry of the music. His Stravinsky and Bolcom, while neither of them is in a "difficult" style, show a decided affinity for the 20th century. By the end of the disc, we are glad that such a major prize has gone to such an admirable musician. --Leslie Gerber

Masterful!.......2007-01-12

Jon Nakamatsu played for us recently in Davidson, NC, and I must say that he has to be one of the five greatest living pianists extant. His exquisite precision and dextrous articulation is far from sterile, and he plays with enviable aplomb music which he colors most appropriately with just the right touch of expressivity.

What a privilege to have heard and seen him live in concert! His CDs recall perfectly the thrill of his live(ly) performance.

I am a big fan of Mr. Nakamatsu, and I thoroughly enjoy his performance in this CD. You will be moved by his precise, dynamic and brilliant performance. The music pieces selected in this CD may not be as familiar to many of us as the ones in his other CD (Chopin), therefore, it may take a while to feel intimate with this CD... nonetheless, his solid music talent is crystal clear in his performance here.

Nakamatsu CD won me over.......1998-10-28

Jon Nakamatsu is truly a great pianist. The selections on this CD just why he is the champion. I have listened to this CD while studying, on road trips, and when trying to relax. I highly recommend this CD. Of course, I may be a bit influenced by the fact that I was his student for 4 years, however, with an objective ear, I still highly recommend it.

Winners of the international opera competition sponsored by Placido Domingo generally have lots of potential, but lack polish. Most promising from the first competition in 1993 is Nina Stemme, whose dark, rich voice shines thrillingly in La forza del destino, but succumbs to flabbiness and choppiness in lyrical passages. Ainhoa Arteta and Inva Mula-Tchako have pretty, sparkling sopranos, though the latter pushes needlessly through the middle voice and Arteta's selections are unchallenging. Kwangchul Youn, a competent, full-bodied bass, lacks style and phrasing skills. According to the verbosely translated liner notes, Domingo, a "matinee idol ... for adolescent, opera-addicted teenagers" (wherever they may be!) is a much-needed role model for these young singers. Only time will tell if these masters of the art of competition will have masterful careers. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
