What could possibly be cooler than hipping kids to some of the best pop music ever made? Music for Little People makes this project simple by producing a batch of the Beatles' sunniest songs performed by a prime adult band and your children's peers and slightly reworked in kid-friendly keys. The result is largely devoid of over-the-top cutesy-poo histrionics--these kids can really sing and the harmonies are quite commendable. Young listeners will be thrilled to sing along on the bouncy chorus of "Life Goes On," to count and do the alphabet on "All Together Now," and to distinguish the amusing sounds of a penny whistle, mandolin, and zither. Both Raffi and blues artist Eric Bibb make guest appearances, but the shining star at this party is child singer Bernie Steinberg, who takes lead on three tunes, including the touchingly performed "Mother Nature's Son" and the amazingly soulful "Birthday." --Paige La Grone

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Honest Effort.......2007-06-09

The songs of the Beatles are timeless. I loved most of the renditions on this CD, but there were a couple that I would have liked to have been done differently. This is strictly a matter of personal taste, and I'd still recommend it. I have no complaints about the seller, either.

4 out of 5 stars Most songs Pretty Good for young kids.......2007-02-19

My children are boys ages 5 and 6. They love the "Birthday" song on this CD, actually. They also love "Yellow Submarine" and "All Together Now." A few others are OK, such as "Ob-La-Di" and "Octopus's Garden" and "When I'm 64." No, it's not the Beetles singing it, and I personally usually hate cover albums; it's disconcerting at first to hear a different version or different voice singing a familiar classic song. (We usually listen to kids music as well as "real" party songs-type music and other "real" music including even Johnny Cash.) And, yes, it's a little irritating to have some of the intro's by kids, such as a child complaining that it's been raining all winter before the kids sing "Here Comes the Sun." However, my kids (and their friends) do enjoy hearing other kids singing the songs. And I enjoy many of the songs myself. My biggest complaint is that many of the songs are too mellow and deemed to be not very fun by my bunch. Perhaps more suited to younger kids or girls or calmer kids? I would recommend it overall.

5 out of 5 stars Fun version for kids.......2006-09-11

Who can sing Beatles songs better than the Beatles? No one, of course! But it sure beats Barney! Or, at least it's a nice change from many kids'albums. I play regular Beatles' music for my kids too. But they also like this album a whole lot. Another reviewer said that children like to hear children singing and this is definitely true in our case. I think it's well done and I base much of my choices in childrens' music on what I can stand to hear repeatedly in the car. So this one definitey qualifies for that standard. I'd highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars lame.......2006-05-27

Birthday is as lame as it gets, except for the version on Bugs Bunny & Friends: Sing The Beatles. The better version is on White Album: disc 2

4 out of 5 stars The kids love it...and I like it too........2006-03-16

My two kids love it --- my daughter since she was 1 and my son since he was 3 - and we've had it for about 6 months now. Ok not all the songs are so great and yes the Beatles sing it better then a bunch of kids do (but kids like hearing kids singing) and every once and a while I try to skip something but my son usually stops me and says "No, I want to hear the ...whatever... song. " They especially love ObLaDi, Octopus's Garden, Yellow Submarine, Birthday and All Together Now.

With the seventh installment of Pavarotti & Friends: For Cambodia and Tibet, the beloved tenor assembles yet another all-star cast of musicians in hopes of helping the children of Cambodia and Tibet. The music of the pop stars--which ranges from the modern rock of the veteran Eurythmics to the dance-pop of Aqua--really steals the show here, with Pavarotti lending his impeccable vocal support. Tracy Chapman performs "Baby Can I Hold You" as a duet with Pavarotti, and Eurythmics team up with him on "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)." Of course, the tenor's fans will be begging to hear the opera great in his element, and it's no surprise that he shines on Bizet's "Agnus Dei," with international pop star Mónica Naranjo joining in; Eduardo Di Capua's "O Sole Mio," with Savage Garden; or even Luigi Denza's "Funiculi, Funicula," with Aqua and a children's chorus. As globetrotting benefit tributes go, this is a mixed bag, but there's probably something here for everyone. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent video...........2002-10-13

I am a fan of Savage Garden, The Eurythmics, and George Michael - all of them did a great job with and without Pavarotti....

And the man who sang O SOLE MIO - Darren Hayes (formerly of Savage Garden)... has the most beautiful- angelic- sultry and great voices I have ever heard - and to do it in Neapoliaton Italian (dialect) and in my opinion the best duet of ALL of them featured!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great songs sung by a diverse group of artists.......2002-02-07

As always, Maestro Pavarotti's Modena concerts are highly entertaining and uplifting.
All artists sang two songs during the concert (one on their own and another with Maestro Pavarotti), but unfortunately not all of the songs are featured on this video. Another shortcoming is that there are no interviews or any extra footage.

It is funny to hear Pavarotti sing a pop tune as it is equally funny to see a pop singer with virtually no voice doing "O Sole Mio", but if it is all in good spirit and for charity, then it is enjoyable.

If you are intersted in European music scene or simply love Pavarotti, this tape will be a great treat for you.

5 out of 5 stars Pavarotti's Best War Child Concert.......2002-01-04

Bravo showed this concert on New Years 2002 and it blew my mind. It is certainly the best of the War Child concerts, which started in 1996 as Pavarotti's effort to help the children of war-torn countries.
Like in the previous concerts, Pavarotti appears with international pop stars in the open-air piazza of his home town, Modena, Italy. (How do I get tickets for that?)
If you haven't heard any of these concerts, also available on CDs, you will be surprised how well Pavarotti's voice--a voice that makes the gods swoon--blends with the likes of Enrique Iglesias, George Michael, Tracy Chapman, and the Eurythmics. Previous concerts included B.B. King, Elton John, Ricky Martin, and Liza Minelli. Sometimes he sings along in English, sometimes in Italian counterpoint. The effect is stupdendous! These concerts display all the beauty of this great operatic voice while at the same time honoring the art of our greatest pop artists.
What makes this video the best is the children's chorus, the combined Ars Canto of Parmi, Italy, and the Children's Choir of Cambodia and Tibet. The video starts with this chorus joining Pavarotti and the totally sexy Enrique Iglesias in a rousing "Cielito Lindo."
Pavarotti really knows entertainment and in this one he pulls out all the stops! Best of all, part of the proceeds of this tape goes to benefit the children of Cambodia and Tibet. Pavarotti's efforts to help War Child have already built music centers for children in Kosovo, Liberia, and Guatemala. What great leadership!
He says on one of his jackets: "All too often, children are betrayed by the inhuman actions of adults, and become the innocent victims of war and cruelty. War Child is an energetic, and practical organization offering vital hope, working tirelessly for children to regain their rightful place in the world."

4 out of 5 stars Very diverse! Loved it!.......2000-12-18

I am a HUGE Savage Garden fan so that was the main reason to buy this album. And I have to say Darren's voice is AWESOME in "O Sole Mio", the first time I listened to it it made me cry. So I bought the cd. I was glad to see that there are very enjoyable songs in the album not only the SG tracks. I loved Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight" performance, now I am a Tracy fan too. You'll enjoy the performances by Aqua, Enrique Iglesias and Eurhytmics and of course the queen Tracy Chapman " ("Telling Stories" is superb!). I even discovered some new artists I had never heard of and I liked them. You won't be disappointed by this album.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully enjoyable and diverse collection of music.......2000-11-05

This collection of music has given me great pleasure. Aqua's Around the World is a joy. Hearing the Eurythmics and Pavarotti perform together is fun and beautiful. I also especially liked Enrique Iglesias's Be with you. 20 tracks and 77 minutes of great music I will listen to again and again. And all for a good cause.

1 out of 5 stars How can you call these "Hymns".......2006-08-05

Not to harp on anyone here, but it's obvious that none of you grew up in a church or environment that had a good choir. I know, a Hymn is a genre of music, but a recording of a hymn isn't one if it doesn't contain HARMONY. If they're a "choir," then why don't the tenors sing a different note than the sopranos, altos, and basses? The organist is quite good, I'll admit, but you're wasting your time if you're looking for a good recording of these beautiful songs that were COMPOSED with harmony, not unison. If they want to sing in unison like this, they need to be stripped of their "choir" status and simply be called a "group."

5 out of 5 stars wonderful collection of magnificent music.......2006-01-18

Most everything on this CD is very well done. The recording environment might have been less than perfect, but that shouldn't dimish one's enjoyment very much. Most of the arrangements are very traditional, with the notable exception of Amazing Grace, which though it isn't terrible, it isn't very good either. Some songs had verses removed, which is understandable, though it was poorly done in Eternal Father, Strong to Save -- they did verse 1 ("Eternal Father"), then they skipped(!!!) verse 2 ("O Christ, the Lord") and went on to the final verses ("Holy Spirit" and "O Trinity") -- which is skipping Someone important! However, outside of that, it was excellent.

If you like sacred music, or hymns, then you'll thoroughly enjoy this CD. If you're a Christian, you should enjoy this as well, no matter your taste in music (and you might just learn to like hymns as well!). It is a well-chosen set of some of the most magnificent, God-honoring music of all time, done is a mostly very traditional manner, and it was done well.

3 out of 5 stars Flawed but enjoyable.......2005-04-15

The huge size and reverberating acoustics of Washington National Cathedral make it difficult to hear any kind of live choral performance clearly, even if you're sitting in the front rows in the nave. The Cathedral Choral Society is handicapped by having to record in this acoustically mushy space, and it shows in this CD, often creating an uneven balance between the organ and the chorus as noted by other reviewers. The repertoire is well-chosen, but the quality of the arrangements is uneven. Too often, the chorus seems to be singing in unison right out of the Hymnal, like any parish church choir at an ordinary Sunday service. Certain pieces do suggest the heights which the Society is capable of attaining. But the group never achieves the splendor that the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys displays every Sunday morning. Just when the Society seems to be getting there, the conductor pulls them back. And the shrill folk arrangement of "Amazing Grace" will have you covering your ears as the sopranos shriek clumsily, confusing volume with fervor.

5 out of 5 stars Hymns through the Centuries.......2002-03-18

This is not a review. I just have a question. Does "Hymns through the Centuries" contain the hymn "It is Well with my Soul?" Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars A must own for classic church music lovers.......2002-02-16

I purchased this CD just based on the titles and am very glad I did. There are only two downsides to the album. First is the fact that there isn't a companion CD with 26 more hymns! Second is picky, but I do agree with another rater that the organ could have been a little louder related to the singing. Hope you enjoy listening!

5 out of 5 stars It's all about the "Razor Sharp RMX".......2005-04-03

When this CDS came out, the Puff Daddy Mix was all over the airwaves. The album version is very true to the Marvin Gaye track, in terms of the accompanying music.

RZA, the man who sculpted many of the early Wu-Tang sounds/solo albums/group albums/etc, came in and remixed his original. It was kind of updated, more futuristic sounding. It's got tight, crisp drums, which was kind of outside of the realm of his normal, "dirty" sound. The melody and bassline might sound repetitive, but its that motion that helps catapult Meth's grimey vocal. The fact that Mary J. still sounds flawless over this very underground Hip-Hop track shows all of their genius. This version rips any of the others in my humble opinion. One of my favorite Meth tracks, ever.

"I gotta love jones..."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The ultimate duet vocalists........2004-08-03

These import two-fers' are terrific. They feature terrific sound quality and great packaging. The albums included are:

UNITED (1967; with Tammi Terrell) **** (4 out of 5) After artistically promising but commercially unrewarding collaborations with Mary Wells and Kim Weston, Motown finally captured lighting in a bottle by pairing Marvin with the demure Tammi Terrell. The incredibly attractive pair were born to sing with one another, and remain one of the all-time great duos in the history of recorded sound. Three big hits were scored right out of the box, including the immortal cuts "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" (#19 Pop, #3 R&B), "Your Precious Love" (#5 Pop, #2 R&B), and "If I Could Build My Whole World Around You" (#10 Pop, #2 R&B). The rest of the album follows the fairly disjointed `60s Motown formula, however "Two Can Have A Party," "Give A Little Love," and the beautiful, Gaye-penned "If This World Were Mine" (which received some airplay as the flip side of "If I Could") are almost as strong as the majestic singles. There are a few faulty selections (such as the silly "Sad Wedding" and the unbelievably straight-faced cover of Frank and Nancy Sinatra's hit "Something Stupid"), but Marvin and Tammi's immense chemistry can make even the most worn clichés seem new and exciting

YOU'RE ALL I NEED (1968; with Tammi Terrell) ****1/2 (4.5 out of 5) Stronger album tracks and a more unified feel make Marvin and Tammi's second release together superior to their first. The big hits "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" (#8 Pop, #1 R&B) and "You're All I Need To Get By" (#7 Pop, #1 R&B) are two of the finest singles to ever grace the Motown label. The third single "Keep On Lovin' Me Honey" (#25 Pop, #11 R&B) was less successful, but is just as amazing as any of the duo's other hits. Unlike many of Motown's sixties releases, the singles are not the only strong tracks on YOU'RE ALL I NEED. Several of the album tracks are nearly as stunning as the singles and sound like they could have been hits in their own right, including the infectious "You Ain't Livin' Until You're Lovin'" and the joyous "When Love Comes Knocking At My Heart."

In an effort to save time, over half of the "duets" were actually recorded separately. Most of these were Tammi's previously unreleased solo songs, with Gaye's vocals added later. The overdubbing is seamless though, and the chemistry between Gate and Terrell vocals is remarkable. "I Can't Help But Love You" and "That's How It's Been (Since You've Been Gone) are perfect pop and, for my money, their version of "Come On And See Me" is superior to both Tammi's original solo version and the later version by the Supremes. YOU'RE ALL I NEED is the finest album Motown released in the sixties, and it stands as Gaye and Terrell's golden moment together.

5 out of 5 stars Their only two genuine duet albums.......2003-08-16

In theory, Marvin and Tammi recorded three albums together, but Tammi was desperately ill and dying at the time the third album was being recorded, so for most of it, Tammi was replaced by Valerie Simpson, although it was Tammi's name that appeared on the album and the singles that came from it. So the two albums featured on this collection are the only albums that Marvin and Tammi recorded together.

The first album, United, yielded three American hit singles - Ain't no mountain high enough (top twenty), Your precious love (top five) and If I could build my world around you (top ten). In Britain, only the last of these charted and even then it was only a minor hit. There are plenty of other great duets here including a cover of Nancy and Frank Sinatra's Something stupid.

The second album, You're all I need, yielded two American top ten hits - Ain't nothing like the real thing and You're all I need to get by - that also charted in Britain, though less successfully. Keep on loving me honey became an American top thirty hit. Its B-side, You ain't living till you're loving, became a British top thirty hit. As with the United album, there are plenty of great album cuts here.

Since I bought this collection, a double-CD has been released in both Britain and America titled The complete duets. The tracks on this set form the first 24 tracks of the first CD of that collection. The rest of that collection includes the so-called third duet album, plus some of Tammi's solo recordings and various alternate takes. If you just want the definitive versions of the songs that Marvin and Tammi recorded together, this twofer will be sufficient. I looked at the track listing of the other collection and the only important tracks not available here can be found on various other Motown compilations.

4 out of 5 stars Familiar but fresh........2007-06-15

My wife first heard this album and told me about it because I am both a Beatle's fan and a lover of good jazz. On several of these tracks the song was instantly recognizable and on some it took longer. The musicianship is outstanding and I thought the arrangements were creative and enjoyable. Easy listening and fun.

4 out of 5 stars Always listenable, sometimes remarkable.......2007-04-08

By and large, Beatles covers are a dreadful lot.

They tend to follow one of two paths: a one dimensional transposition of melody performed over standard charts or noodling by small combos whose self indulgence rarely resolves itself in a satisfying statement of the melody.

Truly transcendent reinterpretations like those by jazz pianists Brad Mehldau and Fred Hersh are sparse.

The group BeatleJazz--consisting of Brian Melvin on drums, David Kikoski on piano, and Larry Grenadier on bass--has devoted itself exclusively to performing Beatles pieces. This, their fourth outing, is at worst pleasant and listenable. At its best, it is remarkably good.

Joined by Toots Thielemans on harmonica, Richard Bona on vocals and electric bass, and Joe Lovano on saxophone, this collection succeeds best where it takes the greatest liberties.

Some pieces, like Fool on the Hill and The Night Before, fall into the pervasive category of pedestrian covers. All You Need is Love, featuring vocals by Richard Bona, is similarly pleasant but forgettable.

The standouts include Lady Madonna, which defeats expectation at every turn and demands repeated listening and even analysis. In the midst of bold liberties and interpretations, the piece returns to the peg of a signature phase before launching back out on trajectories that take it to rapturous experimentation on the edge of time signatures and sonority.

Also notable is the trio's treatment of I Want You. The dark Beatles original seems an unlikely candidate for the transition to jazz ensemble. More improbable still is the group's decision to underpin the tune with a funky little backbeat. It works.

The Continuing story of Bungalow Bill shows Joe Lovano to his best advantage and the Beatles at their least recognizable. When the theme finally appears, it's almost a taunt, a deft sleight of hand before the music disappears up the sleeve again.

This album is a gamble for both Beatle fans and jazz fans alike. But there's something here that will seduce the radicals on both sides of great divide.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth buying!.......2007-05-29

I found this recording basically worthless. It contains only very short excerpts of the song. Not enough to get into and enjoy!

    1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-01-18

This is the worst purchase I have ever made. It is a truly dreadful piece of work.I was so disgusted with it that I threw it into the trash can.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for "drop the needle" style tests.......2006-11-19

If you want to hear full recordings of arias, then this disc is not for you. It plays only tidbits of 99 arias. Contrary to the title, this is definitely not the only opera disc you'll ever need. You shouldn't take it seriously. This disc has next to no value for an opera neophyte. But for opera fanatics, there has never been a better test of your knowledge of operatic repertoire and singers. It's a great challenge for opera buffs. Sit down with your opera loving friends for an hour, play this disc, and try to be the first to identify the singer, composer, opera, and piece. If you're a music professor, this disc would make for an awesome pop quiz. Find out how well your students really know their opera repertoire.

1 out of 5 stars A CD with Attention Deficit Disorder.......2006-10-02

I don't know anyone who would enjoy this CD. It will drive opera fans nuts with a hundred exerpts that run about 30 seconds each, then fade out without the singers even finishing a single verse. It's more like an index of arias, or a volume of teasers that hucksters might use to sell opera CDs.

I never realized how much Bernstein's "Glitter and be gay" sounded like Delibes' "Bell Song" until I heard 35 seconds of one, followed 23 seconds of the other.

Maybe the TV show 'Jeopardy' could use this CD. 'What is "Hush little baby don't you..."??'

What a waste of beautiful voices and great music. 38 seconds of Enrico Caruso, followed by 31 seconds of Jussi Bjoerling, followed by 38 seconds of Dawn Upshaw.

My copy is going to go sailing into the wastebasket as soon as I finish this review.

    1 out of 5 stars This sucks..........2006-03-31

I should only blame myself for not checking out more reviews... this is a CD filled with short, little snippets of great operas songs... and I mean SHORT, LITTLE snippets of 30 seconds or so, each. Don't buy this CD... it is a complete rip off... and that is saying ALOT since it is only $4.00... Again, my fault for not reading the reviews but I trusted that something called a "Music CD" would actually have complete songs... What else does this company offer? A "Music CD" that only has the intros or applause tracks to great songs...?

Move on to something else... Amazon has a great selection... just not this one.

5 out of 5 stars Cowboy Mouth is best live.......2007-03-08

If you've been to a concert, you know how awesome Cowboy Mouth is live. Innovative, fun, energetic!

5 out of 5 stars "The Mouth" That Roars.......2006-09-18

Unlike many previous reviewers I'm not a CM veteran, so I have only this CD to base my review on. And based on this CD, this band COOKS! They could almost rate 5 stars based purely on energy and (positive) attitude alone. Their sound is a combination of rock'n'roll, blues, country, punk, funk & God knows what else. The autobiographical "Ballad of Cowboy Mouth" kicks things off with a frantic pace, & sums up their show with the line "We'll leave you feeling great I swear." They follow up with the smoking "Light It On Fire", featuring an absolutely wailing blues-rock guitar solo. If I had to pick the highlight (which isn't easy), it would probably be the joyously rollicking "Hurricane Party" with John Thomas Griffith tickling the ivories. Lead vocalist Fred LeBlanc's obvious ability to connect with an audience is unsurpassed in this "part concert/part revival meeting". I could go on and on, but suffice it to say that these guys will get your blood pumping, adrenaline flowing & endorphins popping. If it gets any better than this, as previous reviewers say, a live CM show must be a truly religious experience!

5 out of 5 stars Seeing the Mouth live is always the best, but..........2006-08-20

Everyone says nothing compares to seeing Cowboy Mouth live, and that's all true. While more recent albums (Uh-Oh, Voodoo Shoppe) have been getting more polished, Fred's live shows are truly unmatched. That said, this live album does a great job capturing the feel of a live Cowboy Mouth concert...close your eyes and you can imagine rockin' at the Southern Comfort Stage at Jazz Fest, the Howlin' Wolf in the New Orleans Warehouse District, or wherever else you like to catch Mouth concerts. The set list flows well and covers some of their best material. All Mouth fans should own this album.

5 out of 5 stars If trapped on a deserted island with a cd player & 1 disc..........2004-04-03

this would be it! I have every CM album out there, but this one is definitely my favorite. No, it's not the same as being there -- but it's as close as you can possibly get! Cowboy Mouth's rampant enthusiasm at live shows is enough to make me weep... and this CD is enough to make me misty. That is, when I'm not bumping my head on the roof of my car trying to dance in the driver's seat... or endangering my vocal chords screaming responses to Fred. If you only own one Cowboy Mouth album, this should be it!

4 out of 5 stars The MOUTH of the south and beyond..........2002-08-21

While I agree with an earlier comment that this CD does not encapsulate the true sound of Cowboy Mouth live, what recording possibly can?? Any live concert recording will always come up short of the unadulterated energy these guys produce live. I've seen this band in concert at least a dozen times and this CD is the next best thing. I'll take this over the radio-friendly 'Easy', although I bought 'Easy' the day it was released. ;-) Get this CD and get to a live performance on the Southern Comfort tour. The music produced by this band defies a single categorization which makes it a truly unique New Orleans 'gumbo' band. 4 1/2 Stars.

    2 out of 5 stars Great Concept, Ho-Hum Results.......2007-05-30

I loved the idea of this album... until I actually listened to it. Most of the tracks sound like aimless noodling, especially the original material (the "introductions" to several songs). On the few tracks that are well-suited to a brass band, such as "When I'm 64", the results aren't bad, though. If only Canadian Brass had chosen to cover more appropriate songs--"Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite", perhaps, "Because", or even "Only a Northern Song"--they might really have had something.

    4 out of 5 stars a cry for help?.......2007-03-22

ANYBODY OUT THERE GOT A PROBLEM WITH ME LIKING THIS CD! well, you may have a point. i know it looks bad on paper: a group of geeky looking canadian guys playing beatles tunes on brass instruments. but i really enjoy this album. the tone here is not cheesy. it really isn't! well, at least not too much. there is an elegant classical feel to this band's delivery, and i have always felt that the beatles melodies lend themselves nicely to classical workouts. who knows: maybe this review is really a cry for help. i don't care. i am recommending this to you (that's right, you), and i really believe that i am not insane in doing so.

I believe that this CD is of low quality; Don't WASTE your money. Get another CD, like Canadian Brass Super Hits. Trust me, this CD is boring, and it some of the songs sound have no tune. It's just sounds. Believe me, this is the worst of the CB.

I have played my CD no less than 100 times. Jens Lindeman plays the Picc solo on Penny Lane so precise and beautiful, it is hard to believe someone can play that high that well. Articulation and tonality for a Picc is superb. One of the best albums I have ever purchased. I saw them do this live and they are just as good live . Go get it!
