even have a decent follow-up LP.They may not be the best
Scottish musicians ever. But as BOURGEOIS TAGG put it:
I Don't Mind At All. This album is what British Pop is
all about: Simple & beautiful pop songs. Ask The Lord
became easily a club classic, Forbidden is one of the best
ballads ever written by Scottish group and my all time
favourite song, with a solo by Pim that shakes my bones
each and every time, is Long White Car.
Music the British might use to make out by.......2002-04-08
The British pop scene was mostly dominated by synth-pop in the 1980s, but occasionally you had a band who rose above the norm by introducing a more soulful bent to their sound, the fact that most of them were white notwithstanding. ABC, Style Council, Go West, Cutting Crew & Simply Red (even if they didn't fall into the synth-pop category) were good examples of soul-pop from England that was truly worthy of the soul part of that equation. Hipsway was another such band, but because of their only one hit single, they've been forgotten except for really & truly fervent fans of pop music (yours truly included). Their 1986 self-titled debut was a masterpiece of white-boy soul that deserved a bigger chance by the fickle music-buying public.
With Roxy Music (a definite inspiration to 1980s synth- & soul-pop) defunct by the early 1980s, they still seemed to be the standard by which other soundalike & lookalike bands aspired to, with a sophisticated, squeaky-clean image & a singer doing his best Bryan Ferry impression. But for my money, Hipsway lead singer Grahame Skinner did the best job at it. HIPSWAY is mostly made up of ballads & midtempo numbers that Bryan Ferry could easily have given his distinctive treatment to. "Bad Thing Longing", "Long White Car", "Tinder" (with its film noir-ish horn section) & "Forbidden" (probably about a May-December romance) are songs where Skinner comes on oh-so-smoothly with a voice that will melt any woman's heart.
But it's on the uptempo numbers that Hipsway proves themselves the equal of any 1980s R&B band. "The Honeythief" was their only hit single, peaking at #19 in America. This white boys' version of hardcore funk (without losing the polish, of course) was also a hit in the dance clubs & I'm sure even Americans couldn't resist the urge to get down. "Ask The Lord", "The Broken Years" (I have no clue what this song is about), "Upon A Thread" & "Set This Day Apart" (who knew the English gave birth to great horn players?) are other songs (but not as fierce as "The Honeythief") that will make even the most staid listener do what the band's name claims.
Except for "The Honeythief", HIPSWAY's assault on the charts was minimal at best. Hipsway released a second album SCRATCH THE SURFACE in 1989, but it sold disappointingly & the band disbanded soon after. Grahame Skinner & guitarist Pim Jones later formed a band called Witness, which I assume barely went anywhere. Bassist Jon McElhone, who had previously been with Altered Images, later formed Texas, who have since proven to be a more successful & polished version of what Hipsway set out to do. In fact, Texas has virtually steamrolled Hipsway in the way of commercial success with "Say What You Want" being their most recognizable hit. But I think the seeds were being sown for what became Texas all the way on a modest album by an even more modest group called Hipsway.
Thank heavens for used CD stores because that is where I found this album, which is out of print in the U.S., no surprise. So if you happen to remember a little song called "The Honeythief" from way back when, by all means, check out the album from which it came, either as a rather pricey import or as an obscenely-bargain priced used CD in your local record store. Trust me, some one-hit wonders are ones you wish you had heard more from & Hipsway is one of those at the top of the list.
