Album Description
Produced by Ms. Montgomery and issued on her own record label, Little Sunflower features nine tantalizing songs, many of them written by the songstress and her longtime pianist and co-writer, Barry Sames, as well as covers of Freddie Hubbard and Duke Pearson tunes with Ms. Montgomery's appendant lyrics. Two songs, "Armando's Rhumba" and "You're Always in My Space" hearken back to Ms. Montgomery's previous album, Dakini Land, a tribute to her friendship and the music of master keyboardist Chick Corea and his wordsmith Neville Potter. The latter song is a premier of a never before recorded work of Mr. Corea's; the former includes lyrics written at the request of Ms. Montgomery and recorded for the first time as well. Ms. Montgomery assembled an empathetic group of musicians and let them stretch out, the result being that the songs seems to fully and organically developed to the point of luxuriation. Tenor saxophonist Chris Farr and hornman John Swana provide the perfect complements to Ms. Montgomery's strong, protean singing and their ample solo spaces are packed with smart harmonic inventions and infectious phrasings. Sames, a sparkling pianist, not only energizes the rhythm section, he also supplies a broad, knowing acccompaniment to Ms. Montgomerythat allows her to confidently ride the groove. Her vocals show that she is an acute expositor of the language of power, coercion, and, ultimately, love. Whether it be with husky declarations or soaring sanctifications, Ms. Montgomery's exquisite vocal gifts and unerring attentivness to a song's dynamics come together here on Little Sunflower. Bluesy, shrewd, seductive, gracious, sentimental--few singers around today can color a song like Barbara Montgomery.

Dark and delectable.......2005-10-21
Murder, madness, despair, and occasionally, love: welcome to the world of Reverend Glasseye. This album is great fun, and absolutely recommended to anybody who likes the weirder, darker side of music. Adam Glasseye's dynamic, bizarre vocals (often a reedy vibrato tenor, but occasionally sinking into a huskier yowl) may be jarring to the uninitiated ear, but they're the perfect complement to the fine, sprawling band of horns, guitars, drums, and keys.
Midnight Cabaret is a fast-paced romp, running through a long list of strange revelers in the dark of night. Blood O' Lambs is a true country holler, and 3 Ton Chain calls to mind the plodding horror of a coal mine, and Carnival of Pills feels like love turned to poison. But for me, the stand out track closes the album: Black River Falls. This haunting tale really highlights the amazing talent for songwriting this band has. Starting out with a simple guitar line, the song quickly blooms, with the sad rise of the horn section as things go from bad to worse, along with keyboardist Piet Masone's truly ghostly falsetto, and ending with an intense layering of voices, and a plodding, ominous sloshing sound closing out this strong early effort from a band I can only believe will get stronger as the days pass.
It's just weird.......2005-07-20
I read the reviews here on Amazon and purchased this album partly on the strength of the review, and partly because Amazon recommended it for fans of 16 Horsepower. I'm a big 16 HP fan, so I figured I'd give Reverend Glasseye a try. The album cover looked like something 16 HP would produce, so I figured it must be in the same genre. Big disappointment - it's not to my taste at all. Although the music itself is very tight and the instrumentation is creative, the vocals are just waaaaay too annoying. The lead vocalist sings so fast that you can't understand a word he's saying. This in itself is not necessarily damnable - I love Blues Traveller, despite the fact that John Popper sings like he's on speed too; but what's worse is that that the Rev. Adam Glasseye (is he really a Reverend?) sings in an affected brusque shouty voice that I find totally intolerable. The vocals are basically rapidfire yelling, and it's really grating. Some of the lyrics sound as though they might be interesting if they were intelligible, but the Reverend sings too fast and way too obnoxious to make any sense out of them. The only song I really like is 50% Murder, which is sung in a completely different affected voice - sibiliant and intriguing. The slower, quieter vocal track makes room for the beat and instrumentation and the whole song works really well for me. Too bad the rest of the album is like fingernails on a chalkboard...
Dark, haunting and splendid!.......2004-01-10
When listening to this CD, you cast into the black ink genre of movies like "Dead Man, Ravenous and Judge Roy Bean", dissect cadavers in a Mark Ryden painting, or think of whiskey halls, taxidermy and frozen mill ponds. This collection of spooky, Walnut Grove hymns reaches into the mysterious dark heart of the nineteenth century. The sound is cold and haunting, even more than the nostalgic and eclectic croons of Waits and eastern euro-cabaret. These tunes creak with squeezebox melodies and western rhythms that seem to place you on the ill fated wagon train to Truckee. A little bit further down the road and a little bit further in the barn, the lyrics and music are peculiar enough to set a bucolic mood with a taste of dirt in your mouth, but not lose you in esoteric translation. Like all great songs and tales of the west, there is an element of no return and no looking back. What an excellent motif for a clever debut by the Reverend Glass Eye and his Wooden Legs.
Fan-Stinkin-Tastic!.......2003-03-25
To begin with, this is not a long cd. It's only about 40 minutes long. It is, however forty amazing minutes. I was played this cd, and straight from the first song, I was fascinated by every minute. I kept expecting to hear a bit of filler any second, but the tracks get better and better as the album goes on. Buy this thing. Expect rowdiness, lots of wailing and soaring vocals, and dare I say Tom Waits inspired story songs with full on organs, horn sections, and polka beats. There's really even no way to describe this album, you need to hear it for yourself. And I mean that literally. You NEED to hear this.

Well-done.......2005-12-08
The release of Reverend Glasseye's triumphant new album "Our Lady of the Broken Spine" does not render moot this brief but brilliant release. Rather than a handful that didn't make the cut for the album, these are in fact older songs with which the Reverend simply couldn't bear to part.

Coo Coo Cal's Disturbed offers more variety than previous efforts, but his lyrics remain wanting. Beats on the LP come courtesy of Kay-Gees and Big Hank, and though they sometimes contain flashes of originality, for the most part they sound stale and reheated. There's some good collaborations with cats like fellow Midwesterners MC Twista, Koffee Brown, Midwikid, Mr. Do It to Death, Kela, and a few others, but the main reason for digging this joint is Cal's on-point flow and his ability to throw down occasional patches of colorful wordplay. With better production and more-imaginative tales, Cal might just live up to his own hyperbole. --Paul Sullivan
Customer Reviews:
COO COO.......2004-09-18
Coo Coo Cal is probally my favorite rapper out there right now and I love all of his cds. This isnt only because im from Milwaukee. All of these tracks never get old.
Coo Coo brings heat.......2004-01-12
The production on this cd was outstanding. Coo Coo has the unique ability to inflectuate his voice in a way that sounds tite, not annoying like other rappers who try to do this. He does represent the MIDWEST very well.
U GOTTA!.......2001-12-05
Coo Coo Cal's "Disturbed" is simply one of the finest rap albums out there. The album showcases phat tracks back to back. "The Projects" is indeed 2002's summer anthem. Git on it fellaz, you wont be disappointed.
Production lets Cal down on this one.......2001-12-02
Coo Coo Cal is a talented MC, no doubt about it. The first thing that strikes me after listening to this album is however the weak production. Especially the producer Big Hank dissapoints. The beats are boring and sound too simple. One of the few good tracks, "How does it feel to ya" is produced by former Naughty by Nature member Kay Gee and this track stands out. Another good track is "Still ride til we die". Again the production on this track is a bit dubious but the song sounds good due to the MC skills of Cal and Twista. Except from these tracks the album is boring and will have you sleeping rather than dancing...
One of the Best CD's of 2000/2001.......2001-10-21
I think this is an excellent CD. It's complete with all the themes imaginable: drugs, harlots, Prison, Ghetto life, criminal acts, depression, and some good stuff like hope. Unlike the Cash Money or NO Limit, this rapper actually has some interesting ideas, not only Ice, Cash. His voice isn't annoying like Lil' Wayne's or jadakiss's. I think this album is good because every song is good: from track 1 through 16. I especially liked songs: My projects (2), I did it again (3), HOw does it feel to ya (4), sick and tired (5), dedication (7), ghetto dreaming (10), My mind is gone (12), and My projects remix Ft. Trick Daddy and Kurupt (16). But every song is good. You won't need to skip through tracks, trust me. This guy has flows. I hope he gets new artist of the year. Another good thing about this album is that every song's beats are sweet. No stupid Stuff, COo is an incredibly versatile rapper with good intelligent lyrics and timeless beatz... fo sho... If you respect the rap game, you gotta get this. I didn't trust coo's new album since he was a new artist, so i got the mp3's, but after hearing like 3 songs, I Got this CD. It's Awesome! better than Dmx, Ja rule, Petey Pablo, Jadakiss, and other east Coast rappers. But 2pac and Snoop still rule the game! If you want to get a Cd that you won't have to take back, GO and buy this!

RICK DERRINGER IS DRESSED TO KILL WITH ROCK AND ROLL HOOCHIE KOO........2007-03-05
I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "THE BEST OF RICK DERRINGER, ROCK AND ROLL HOOCHIE KOO" by one of Rock's greatest premiere guitarists. I give you MR. RICK DERRINGER. This compilation album was originally released in 1996 on Compact Disc on the Epic Legacy Records label in association with Sony Music Entertainment Inc. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
The only word to describe RICK DERRINGER'S blistering guitar playing is AWESOME. DERRINGER has continued to entertain audiences the world over since his early days as a teenager in the 60's scoring the hit single "Hang On Sloopy" with the band THE MCCOYS. DERRINGER (Real name ZEHRINGER) moved on from "Hang On Sloopy" (A 1975 Rock/Raggae version is included on this set) to an active schedule of performing, recording, writing and producing. While pursuing a solo career, this collection features the best of Rick's solo recordings from 1973 to 1980. DERRINGER was also in demand as a session guitarist and played on recordings with legendary artists such as STEELY DAN, ALICE COOPER, JOHNNY AND EDGAR WINTER and many others. While having a reputation as one of the best Rock guitarists in the music business, this is the first time RICK DERRINGER'S solo career has been chronicled on a single collection. In my opinion, "THE BEST OF RICK DERRINGER, ROCK AND ROLL HOOCHIE KOO" is a true testament of the creative musical brilliance of one of the greatest guitarists ever and a fine fitting tribute to one of true legendary pioneer guitarists in Rock n' Roll history. And yes, THIS ALBUM DOES KICK A*S.
Now it is time to let the music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This legendary compilation album begins with the legendary blistering merciless Rock anthem "Rock And Roll, Hoochie Koo," the funkish killer Rocker "I Didn't Ask To Be Born," the fast paced orchestrated acoustic turned electric Rocker "Time Warp," the beautiful orchestrated slow soothing "Teenage Queen," the breathtaking Rocker "Let Me In," the daring groundbreaking Rocker "Still Alive And Well," the soulful heartfelt Rocker "Let The Music Play," the funkish Rocker "Modern Love," the slow beautiful orchestrated acoustic "Everything," the rugged and tough Rocker "Sleepless," the amazing and fast paced Rocker "Need A Little Girl," the incredible remake done in a Rock/Raggae music style "Hang On Sloopy," the energetic and vibrant Rocker "Sittin' By The Pool," the beautiful slow acoustic orchestrated mild Rocker "Don't Ever Say Goodbye," the funkish soulful fast paced Rocker "Teenage Love Affair" and the speedy merciless Rocker "Beyond The Universe." DERRINGER plays his guitar with such skill and a devastating fury that he shows no mercy for his guitar nor does he ever let up on his music.
Overall, this legendary compilation album is worth seeking out and cheeking into further especially if you are a newcomer or a curious listener about the sound and music of RICK DERRINGER.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This priceless gem will definitely prove to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, RICK DERRINGER is here to stay. As long as Rock n' Roll still exists, RICK DERRINGER'S name will always be listed among the greatest guitarists of all-time. I know for fact that we haven't seen or heard the last of DERRINGER yet. DERRINGER still has so much to contribute to Rock n' Roll. I know that we will all be hearing from DERRINGER in the near future soon. So here's to you Rick. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. RICK DERRINGER RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
RICK & ROLL HOOCHIE KOO.......2005-12-24
RICK DERRINGER-ROCK & ROLL HOOCHIE KOO/THE BEST OF RICK DERRINGER: Guitar slinger Rick Derringer has just about done it all---he was a teen star in the 60's group THE MCCOYS of HANG ON SLOOPY reknown, supported both Johnny and Edgar Winter in their best bands, produced for acts from Cyndi Lauper to Meat Loaf to Weird Al Yankovic, ghosted for Ace Frehley's on some Kiss records, created music for the WWF, and most recently, he's released blues albums. In spite of his musical diversity and undeniable talent, he's still only really remembered for a pair of classics---the previously mentioned 1965 McCoys bubble-rock chart killer (and possibly its follow-up, a SLOOPY soundalike retread of PEGGY LEE's FEVER) and ROCK & ROLL HOOCHIE KOO, which Johnny Winter also covered. Unfortunately, a wimpy 70's update of SLOOPY no fan should EVER have to endure appears on this career retrospective, although one of Derringer's few other semi-hits, a respectable cover of Warren Zevon's LAWYERS, GUNS AND MONEY is MIA. That leaves the Johnny Winter-associated (though Derringer penned) STILL ALIVE AND WELL and a dozen or so decently executed, but not overly essential other tracks of guitar antics, several from his 1974 breakthrough album ALL AMERICAN BOY. Make no mistake---the little dude can play---but at 16 selections, BEST OF could be too much unfamiliar material to digest at one sitting. RATING: THREE BULLETS
They're Playing My Song!.......2005-09-01
"Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo" has been my official theme song for years now. Derringer is a guitar god, sadly unrecognized by most. When I hear this music, I feel like I'm being crazy at a wild college party. I see kegs of beer and pure madness, and I love it! The other songs on the collection are all great too.
Where is Derringer Live ???.......2004-06-07
Just purchased this cd, looks like it is full or great tunes, I am just wondering about the cd version of Derringer Live that was issued back in the late 70's. I played that eight track to death! It rocked so much harder than the studio stuff and featured big fat sound. I believe it was on Big or Blue Sky records. If any Derringer fans know if this is available on cd, please let me know.
