In My Songs is soul man Gerald LeVert's final farewell, a collection of vintage-sounding R&B equal to any of the discs he put out in his 20-year career. Only, of course, sadder: Prior to track one, Gerald's legendary father, the O'Jay's Eddie LeVert, reminisces momentarily about the months leading up to this album and his son's pride in presenting it; shards of that short speech linger through songs like "Sweetness," in which the man who was called "Teddy Bear" before Ruben Studdard was a twinkle in Paula Abdul's eye promises to "be sweeter tomorrow than I was today," and "Hang in There," a soulful plea sent out to a sulking lady friend. Two upbeat songs break the solemn mood midway through--"DJ Don't" molds itself to fit old-school party-night sensibilities, and "Wanna Get up with You" whisks the ladies off to the dancefloor--but even those tracks can't help going bittersweet around the edges. It was such a shock when the world lost one of the greatest R&B singers, Gerald Levert, in November 2006 but he left behind one of the greatest CDs I've ever heard. There is not one song on this CD that I don't like; I love every one of them! My particular faves are:

The R&B World lost another balladeer a few short months ago when Gerald Levert passed away at the early age of 40. Although we will miss him, he left behind a extensive music library including an album that he had just completed at the time of his passing. In My Songs is a 12-song collection that encompasses the diverse array of sounds that we have come to love from Gerald Levert. The upbeat tracks that stand out the most are the happy-go-lucky song "Wanna Get Up With You," the charismatic "DJ Don't," and the bouncy "What Cha Think About That." His best mid-tempo songs would have to be "I Don't Get Down Like That" and "M'Lady" although "Fall Back" and "To My Head" are also respectable. But Gerald still gives the ladies a couple slow jams to cuddle up with. The title track "In My Songs" has to be one of his best ballads to date with all of the compassion that you hear from him while he's belting out his feelings. "Is This The Way To Heaven?" and "Deep As It Goes" are smooth love songs that will put anybody in the mood for some extra-curricular activity. "Hang In There" and "Sweeter" are more romantic in their approach than the other slow cuts. Gerald Levert definitely proved himself time and time again that he more than just Eddie Levert's son. He stood the test of time and garnered fans from across the globe. In My Songs is a great complement to his already huge discography. Even if no more albums are released, the world has many great songs and great memories of the man they called 'Teddy Bear'...R.I.P.

I still think I'm going to wake up and realise that Gerald's death was all a dream. But, alas, it isn't so. This album was worked on by my boyfriend and the pain that appears on his face each time the video comes on, makes me just want to take away the pain somehow. It's a great purchase in rememberance of a great guy!

Italian Amercans--a must buy.......2007-07-28

As an USAF Air Attaché, I played this music at many a dinner party with a surprising amount of interest and positive comments from my foreign colleagues--often asking for copies of the music.

As a child of the 60's, these songs resurrected long-lost memories of great Italian music that was at one-time almost prevalent in the entertainment industry. I am proud that our culture produced these great songs, hope you are too! I still often listen to this music at dinner while enjoying a glass of great Italian wine.

We bought this CD for our daughter's wedding. After reviewing it, we could have saved our money. The version of Funiculi sounded like the Salvation Army band and it was totally lifeless. Lou Monte's Hey Gumbaree (it is actually Eh Cumpare in Italian--that should have given it away) was awful, and he consistently butchers the Italian language in all his other songs (annoying, I mean, couldn't he have learned the right pronunciation?).

While Perry Como and others have melodic voices (and very wisely sing in English because they don't know Italian), these are '50s versions of the songs, for the most part. While you have to appreciate them, they are really old and reflect the '50s type of instrumention and style. Would have loved to have heard all these songs done in a fresh and original way. Soldi Soldi was our favorite by far, and that is why we gave the CD two stars.

Could have gone to the library for this one.

Thanks for letting me voice our opinion. We are a big Italian family and just spent hundreds of dollars buying every CD out there for our daughter's wedding and figured we would share our opinion with others.

You may not have heard of the name Ne-Yo before, but you've more than likely heard some of his lyrics--specifically, on Mario's massive hit, "Let Me Love You." This talented musician wrote for a number of chart-toppers before the age of 22, penning songs for Mary J. Blige, B2K, and Faith Evans as well. After working for others, Ne-Yo--a.k.a. Shaffer Smith--decided to focus on his own career. Judging by the quality of songs on this debut, his creative well is not running dry anytime soon. The kick-off single, "So Sick" showcases the same tenderness evident in his Mario hit, as does much of this slow-jam heavy CD. Smith also shines on the Michael Jackson-esque "Sign Me Up," giving props to the icon in the chorus by singing "I just wanna rock with you" with beat-fueled bravado. Ne-Yo's songs come from a love of seventies and eighties soul; as a result, his music contains some unique samples, including an O'Jays lick (on the sexy "Get Down Like That," and a Switch snippet (on "It Just Ain't Right"). Not Ready For Prime Time.......2007-07-30

Ne Yo has had some promising singles and on the strength of "So Sick", I picked up this album. In the same order, I picked up an older Anthony Hamilton and man, let me tell you they are like night and day.

Ne Yo is obviously a talented cat, but his delivery and overall presentation leave a lot to be desired. R+B and Soul come from having some history, having some real pain, having lost your woman the night before your wedding, having your man two time you all over town. No matter what, you need to go through the pain to sing and write about the pain.

Ne Yo comes off like a teenager, with immature experiences and no street cred. Maybe someone that is 13 and is breaking up with their girl of 6 weeks can realate...but I need Teddy Pendergrass, Anthony Hamilton, Marvin Gaye, James Ingrim, Johnny Gill...or anyone else that keeps it real to tell me whats up, not some kid whining on track after track.

Ne Yo may grow into a solid performer, but for now he should stick to MTV and pop radio...cause he just doesnt stand up in the midnight hour like R+B singers that I know and love.

Ne-Yo is the real deal...real singer and writer. I strongly recommend that he eliminates the use of profanity; it is not necessary with his talent. Real singers don't need to use profanity. I recommend he and real singers like Jaheim leave the profanity to the countless other entertainers (not singers) performing today.

You can only leave a good review for Neyo or you get your review removed from the list. But I have over 500 cd's, so my expectations are high and after so sick, Mario's let me love you, I was expecting a great cd but sorry, this is not, he can write good songs like the above, but the cd as a whole, is only worth 1 star.
I just had to write a review because I was so disappointed in the almum as whole and I did not want another person to fall into the same trap I did, due to the hype around this guy. So if you have been into r&b like me from the early 90t's, and you have alot of cd's and you have reached a stage were, if you are going to spend your money on a cd, all or at least 8/10 tacks must be good, then take your time before you decide to buy this cd. When he comes up with a great cd with more than two or three songs I will be one of the first, to get online and say so.
Having said all that, he just writes better songs for other people, so If you like his music, I highly recommend...Save The Last Dance 2 Soundtaack, he does some of his best work on it.

If you enjoy classic gospel music this CD is for you. I love all the songs and Selah has a unique version of each classic hymn. I believe it is one of their best CD's along with "The Hiding Place." Both makes your soul want to worship our Saviour and joyfully sing along.

Josh Groban fans who caught the singer's 2004 Closer tour would no doubt take note of Lucia Micarelli, who was the violinist and concertmaster for Groban. Like her boss, who also is executive producer of Music From A Farther Room, Micarelli is a young, attractive, and talented player who has the classical training, but who is also enchanted with pop music. Also like her boss, her strain of classical crossover works thanks to tasteful accompaniment, in this case from arranger/composer Paul Schwartz. The smartly chosen program of material comes from such varied catalogs as David Bowie and Rogers and Hart. Micarelli's playing is emotional without being overreaching, assertive when called upon, and nuanced. When she does go over-the-top pop on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's brief but fun; when she navigates Piazzolla's "Oblivion" she draws upon the song's passion more than its technical requisites. Music from a Farther Room.......2007-05-22

I heard Lucia Micarelli during a 2007 Josh Groban concert. Her live solo performance in addition to her backgrounds for Groban were mesmerizing. I purchased this album to see if it was as enjoyable as her live work, and I was not disappointed. Micarelli performs a good mix of classical and pop pieces. My favorite tracks on the album are Smarkland, Meditation, Lady Grinning Soul, Portrait, and Nocturne/Bohemian Rhapsody.

This CD is very well done. I was familiar with old favorites and delighted with new songs. I would like to hear more of the rock songs preformed by her. I think she's got a lot of talent and could possibly do well with the rock songs on a future album.

Lucia has power in her playing. I think that she shouldn't be allowed to play violin this good. Her raw talent is conveyed in every song. She doesn't just stick to classical, as the accompaniment music isn't just strings. I wished she had played a little more in Bohemian Rhapsody. I saw her in concert with Josh Groban and I knew I had to purchase this CD. Lucia is an inspiration and her love for the violin cannot be contained.

During one of the "interludes" on My Life, Keith Murray is rapping about "Grab your cranium for my ultimatum," when someone in the studio control booth asks producer Chucky Thompson, "Hey, Chuck, put on some of that smooth [stuff]." Murray disappears; the dreamy synth chords of Blige's title track emerge, and her sultry voice moans with a combination of weary loneliness and unslaked desire. The ballad which follows is "smooth" but never slick, for the singer's sinuous, extended notes confess the blues even as they yearn for something better. It's tempting to see this little scenario--the rapper being turned off in favor of the soul diva--as a repudiation of hip-hop in favor of old-fashioned R&B. An honest listen to this album, however, makes such an interpretation impossible. Blige does no actual rapping herself on her long-awaited second outing, but the sound of "My Life" would have been impossible without hip-hop. The best of Mary's music.......2007-06-09

Of all her CD's, this one has to be the best and that's not putting the others down in any way. My Life had less street edge than What's the 411, but the CD showed so much growth of maturity. She put her heart and soul into and you can feel the emotion whether she was happy or sad. I remember right before this CD came out, i was wondering how was she going to top the first one and i am glad to say, there was no let down with this one. I have been a big fan since the debut, but this still remains my favorite Mary J. Blige CD.

Out of all of MJB's CD's, this one has always been my fav. I have purchased this CD in the past at least 4 times. The majority of the songs on here are sung with great passion and meaning. MJB really delivered on this one.

I love Mary J. Blige. But on this sophormoric effort, she is at her best lyrically, and vocally. If What's the 411? introduced her, it was this CD that etched her title as the Queen of Hip-Hop into the history books. The sentencing of these songs and the quality of these songs along with the pain and agony in which Mary J. Blige sings about has made her the MJB we have all come to love. Of all the CDs that she has released, it does not get any greater than this. This is a CD now in which one needs to press play and sit back. Mary is nominated for 8 Grammys for her lastest CD, the Breakthrough, which I have given 4 1/2 stars, the only reason is that there is My Life before it. What's the 411 and Share my World were phenomenal, but this is her masterpiece. A bonfied classic. Long live the Queen.

I'm not sure what the "Other Hits" metioned in the title of this CD are as no other tracks on it showcase Renee Diggs' awesome vocal talent better than "Object of My Desire." I still think of Teena Marie when I hear it.

Excellent 80's CD.......2007-02-13

I have been trying to get this on CD for quite a while; I think that Renee Diggs was one of the most powerful female vocalists of our time, who unfortunately didn't get the chance to prove it. My favorite songs on the CD are "The More We Love" and "Am I Still The One?" I recommend this cd to any and everyone who loves the 80's!

Song for My Father.......2007-03-14

This is one of the goog works by Horace Silver, with a very good remastering. However , as I did when listening to the Cape Verdean Blues, I couldn't find clear influences of the music from Cape Vede isls, music I'm familiar with.

Horace Silver (b. 1928) is a skillful jazz pianist with a knack for composition, and this album highlights his genius for simplicity that has since become his trademark. The title track pays homage to Horace's Portuguese father from Cape Verde, John Silver. On "Song for My Father", Horace mixes up his own F-minor jazz piece with traditional Cape Verde and Brazilian carnival music. The result sounds a bit like bossa nova/jazz samba, which was popularized a year before on the Stan Getz/Joao Gilberto album of 1963. Everyone was doing it at this time.

Much of the flavor on this album works its way out from the influence of the title track, while "The Kicker" is a Joe Henderson composition. This Rudy Van Gelder 24-bit remaster sounds wonderful, though it is not necessary to upgrade from the 1990 edition if you are considering it. There aren't any extra materials, aside from new liner notes. The sound is great, but is comparable to the 1990 release. All in all I would purchase this edition only if you do not have the earlier reissue.

Great music, terrible remastering.......2007-02-09

This is definitely a jazz classic, and with the advertised "24-bit remastering", not to mention that it is part of Blue Note's Rudy van Gelder series, I was ready for a sonic treat. However, it was obviously mastered too loud. Looking at the waveform with Cooledit, there's obivously a fair amount of peak clipping on the CD. What a shame to do this to such classic music.

Hammerin' Funk.......2006-04-18

Horace Silver has always been one of my favorite piano players. Though his styling isn't as distinct as chops of Monk, Horace got some Hammerin'Funk of his own. I've always felt that this album is where is talents have been showcased the best. The album opens with his very own brand of deceptively simple Funk. Yet if it's so simple why aren't there more piano players who sound so joyous and free as Horace does on this track. Que Pasa is a fine latin effort. It sounds almost genre defining. You wanna know what Latin Jazz is. It's Que Pasa! Finaly there's lonely woman. A bop classic that listens like a song with full lyric and all. Each time you revisit this song the lyrics are different but always carry a melancholy beauty.

I feel this is one of his best CD's. The tracks and his saxophone are crisp, discreet, and moving. The funky opening tune will get you in the grooves and his remakes of "The Closer I Get to You", "Inseparable", and "You are My Lady" will make you want to break out that bottle of wine with someone special. Trust me on this one. The minute I played it for the Mrs. it was on and I just wish we had a fireplace. Mello, Mello, Mello, with great sax. Don't miss this one.

Would somebody please get this guy a live band?.......2007-04-03

Well, well...another lame CD from the "King of Drum Machines". KW is a great sax player, but I wish that he would hire a back up band instead of relying on drum machines and other electronics to produce music. This stuff sounds like karaoke music or something that my 4-year-old plays on her toy keyboard. I do, however, like his rendition of Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up", but still it would sound so much funkier if the song were performed by a live band instead of a computer. Anyway, if you like poorly produced "electonica", then you may enjoy this CD. Ohterwise, try some Sanborn, Najee, Kirk Whalum or Boney James for your "saxual" pleasure.

Come on now; let's judge this album on its own merits. Firstly, the Statler Brothers( retired now) have been OUTSTANDING country music performers; far from third-rate!!! I am not a country music fan, but I do know GOOD singing when I hear it!!!!!! Their recommendation of this disc is a compliment to the producers of it, and for the choirs on it. Does it really matter whether they are English, American or from Upper Slobbovia???????
This is an excellent representation of hymns in general; and it is good to hear that some of the more traditional hymns are alive and well. There is no one that performs them better than the British choirs!!!Their hymn tradition goes back for centuries, and many of the hymns we hear today in this country have a direct relationship to that heritage.
A quote from John Rutter (an Americanized Englishman, and director of the Cambridge Singers, from his own album "Sing,ye Heavens") : "Hymnody is forever changing......the emergence of pop and folk-influenced worship songs and choruses, whose worth time will tell.....Perhaps it is time to reflect on the immense riches of hymnody built up over so many centuries, and to be reminded of them at a time when they are at risk of neglect."
Therefore, those of you who will, listen to this album with joy and not with the idea of finding something wrong, because you won't be successful.

Hymns for personal worship.......2007-01-09

I deeply appreciate the quality of this collection of well known hymns. They are sung with expression and clear diction. The accompanying music enhances the message rather than dominating the words sung. As a whole the words and accompanying instrumental music provide a very rich worship experience.

Excellent traditional hymn CD.......2005-08-15

Being a fan of traditional Catholic hymns this general Christian hymn Cd was excellent. It has all the classics and is over 77 minutes long. The recordings are crisp and clean and the track listing flows very well. A few omissions of some popular classics but that is forgivable. An outstanding addition to any Cd hymn library. To my fellow Catholics, if you really want awesome mass music buy Catholic Latin Classics.

Wonderful and Glorious.......2004-03-12

Being an Episcopalian choir member, it is such a treat to hear many of the same hymns I sing each Sunday performed by such a talented choir. The beauty and majesty in each hymn makes for a wholly uplifting experience. I like that they include the lesser known arrangement of Nearer, My God to Thee(my personal favorite) and lesser known Anglican hymns. If you enjoy listening to these gorgeous hymns sung as they were meant to be, I highly urge you to purchase this CD.

A glorious CD with top-quality hymn-singing........2003-03-09

I wonder if hokiedave and I were really listening to the same CD.

Judging by his comments, he clearly isn't aware that King's College choir is an all male choir. Consequently, his comment about a woman singing "a mile off key" in the first track is strange, to say the least. I suspect as well (in fact I know) that Stephen Cleobury, the conductor of the choir, has a far more sensitive musical ear than all-round nice guy hokiedave and would be able to pick up any poor intonation before the CD was pressed, and even during the performance itself.

Hokiedave's comments about rolled r's are likewise somewhat absurd. Anyone who has sung in a choir of this type will know how important it is for the "r" to be rolled; otherwise the sound produced is a particularly unpleasant one to listen to. If you don't like it, hokiedavie, go and listen to something else more hokie.

And finally . . . . these are not SONGS! They are HYMNS.

Definitely worth buying!
