Product Description
Traffic Entertainment and B Boy Records present one of the most influential and original albums in music history, Criminal Minded by Boogie Down Productions. KRS-ONEs combination of street slang and Websters dictionary knowledge backed with Scott La Rocks hard hitting, minimal beats set this record apart when it was originally released in 1986. With this now classic debut album, BDP helped redefine the New York rap music scene. Criminal Minded elevated the standards to a new level and proved that rap could be a dynamic and consciousness-raising medium. KRS-ONE has gone on to become one of the most prolific and critically-acclaimed artists in Hip Hop history. A true classic, Criminal Minded was included in Vibe Magazines 100 Essential Albums of the 20th century.

A classic among classics........2007-07-30
In my opinion this is not the best album by BDP or KRS-ONE, but what it is definitely is the foundation or blueprint for everything that has come after it ...and not only for the members involved in creating it...but rap music on a whole. It has very simple stripped down production with sharp poigniant lyrics that doesn't try to make you dance..it goes for the gut. It's brilliance is in it's simplicity and boldness and honesty.

Old School Classic.......2007-06-22
It's hard to believe this one only has one other review, I got this one back in January and have listened to quite a bit and like it better and better with each listen. Only recently have I began to collect old school hip hop and rap, and this one is definitely essential in many circles in the evolution of rap and hip hop in general so I've read.
I'm not one who really understands the techniques of the MC's or the recording process, all I know is that it still holds up after all these years. Back then I probably wasn't into this type of stuff (when it was first released), but it is an important part of music history for sure along with many others I've gotten like Schoolly D, Ice T, N.W.A, and Public Enemy to name a few from that era. And of course you got KRS-one on this one who is one of the most influential and best MC's of all time.
Next on my list is 2 Live Crew, and then my old school fix will be complete with Dr. Dre's debut and Snoop Dogg's debut...and boy am I looking forward to hearing those!
The beginning of the KRS-ONE legacy--.......2007-06-04
Criminal Minded: The beginning of the KRS-One saga
Put together by an ex-social worker and his formerly homeless client, Boogie Down Productions' DJ Scott La Rock and KRS-One introduced Criminal Minded to the hip-hop public in early 1987, after a year or so of dropping 12-inch singles on the indie B-Boy Records, and making a name for themselves in New York's underground hip-hop circles. The 10-track, groundbreaking album by BDP is definitely up there with the greatest rap albums of all time. The production by the artists (and according to many interviews, an un-credited Ced Gee of the Ultramagnetic MC's) brought a new sampling aesthetic to hip-hop, focusing heavily on then-dusty James Brown sides from the 60's & 70's. In KRS-One's rhymes listeners can hear a rapper whose intention is not just to entertain but to educate. The album opens with "Poetry", with a trademark James Brown scream; KRS declares "I'm not an MC, so listen--call me poet or musician". "9mm Goes Bang" is a reggae-driven tale of street revenge, focusing on the fictional "crack dealer named Peter". The Bronx-based act made instant rivals in the Queens-based Juice Crew, as evidenced in songs "South Bronx" and the perennial "diss record" favorite "The Bridge is Over" (with an oblique nod to Billy Joel at the end). "Dope Beat" samples AC/DC's "Back in Black", making for an influential rap/metal combo. The title track reinterprets the opening lines of the Beatles' "Hey Jude" with subversive results. In the ensuing years since the LP's first release, the album has fallen in and out of print several times. Fortunately, Traffic Entertainment (formerly Landspeed) has secured the catalog rights, and made the album available again. Subsequent re-releases have tacked on a few bonus tracks or an entire instrumentals disc.

BDP's first album--and the only one to include the late DJ Scott La Rock--sounded harder than hell when it came out in 1987. Though the simple beat-box patterns on a few tracks sound dated, most of La Rock's tracks are bluntly effective, especially the AC/DC riff he appropriates on "Dope Beat." And KRS-One still performs most of his Criminal Minded rhymes, because his audience knows them word for word: the ultraviolent dancehall of "9mm Goes Bang," the battle cry of "South Bronx" (and its counterpart, the anti-Juice Crew screed of "The Bridge Is Over," with its little Billy Joel homage), the catalog of La Rock's condom collection on "Super-Hoe." KRS bloomed later; here, he just rocked. --Douglas Wolk

Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded.......2007-01-12
Two decades ago Boogie Down Productions released their debut album "Criminal Minded" (1987). I was six years at the time and only came across this release in recent years. The Bronx group at this time consisted of KRS-One (A.K.A. Lawrence Parker), D-Nice (A.K.A. Derrick Jones) & DJ Scott La Rock (A.K.A. Scott Sterling). Production comes from Ced Gee, Scott La Rock & KRS-One. Scott La Rock was killed at the age of twenty-five in 1987 leaving behind a wife and baby son. This is one of the early notable gangster rap albums, after Scott La Rock's death KRS-One turned to conscious Hip Hop. My favorite track on this release is "9MM Goes Bang", KRS delivers raw lyrics, and a memorable chorus. Old school Hip Hop heads will probably shake their head at me but the first time I heard the lyrics to this release, 50 Cent was reciting them in his movie "Get Rich Or Die Tryin". KRS rhymes with confidence over a "Dope Beat" (for the time). On "South Bronx" & "The Bridge Is Over" the crew represents their hood while dissing Queensbridge. The title track "Criminal Minded" is another strong cut which has been sampled from (like many other parts of this album) over the years. Boogie Down Productions "Criminal Minded" is a memorable release which I recommend to new and old fans alike - good chance some of your favorite MC's of today were bumping this back in the day.
RAP IS SOMETHING YOU DO HIP HOP IS SOMETHING YOU LIVE.......2007-01-03
Well I did not read any reviews for this as I am sure there all good. What can I say that has not been said about this Classic album. First of all you can start with the cover which gets your attention. You have Scott La Rock and Krs-1 just stareing at you which makes you wonder wow what is this going to sound like. I have had this for close to 20 years now and it still sounds as good as it did the first day I opened the record. I dont really have a favorite on here as almost all of the songs are great but I would have to go with South Bronx as that is what reminds me of pure Hip Hop and its the birth of Hip Hop also. I can imagine in my mind like the rest of us what Krs-1 is talking about block parties and just having a good time. Then Criminal Minded which even at 37 years of age makes me me get excited about hip hop and still hold out hope for good music. They say Hip Hop is dead I dont know if it is dead more like it is stalled and waiting for a kick start.
u no what to expect.......2006-10-02
this is criminal minded by bdp, what more should i say, straight up classic
"Criminal Minded...You've Been Blinded".......2005-11-13
The original BDP crew consisting of "Blastmaster" KRS-One and DJ Scott La Rock(before being murdered in the late 80's) debuted out of Bronx, NY with this historic release and introduced hip hop fans to hardcore rap. BDP technically was the first hardcore hip hop act to come out when the genre was still very young and took the industry by surprise. Possibly considered one of the best rap albums of all time, who can disagree. The late 80's began to develop a list of 2 man duos or what I like to refer to it as..."2 turntables and a mic" consisting of one emcee and one DJ. The self proclaimed "teacher" and hip hop scholar, KRS-One along with DJ Scott La Rock in my opinion are the originators of the boom bap sound that would be further developed and become the influence for many years to come. During hip hop's golden era and when dissing in rap was at its peak, naturally this album did reference the "beef" between KRS-One and Queensbridge rival MC Shan with the groundbreaking dis record "The Bridge Is Over". This monumental classic will never be outdated and will always be a favorite among hip hop fans.

An Essential D.J. Tool..........2001-08-16
While the actual record with lyrics is an obvious choice, this is a great tool to mess with for dj's out there. The ability to have these tracks on the instrumental side is a godsend.. everyone knows the classics and they could be used as a tease till the you choose to drop the lyrics. classic beats - nothing beats them. If youre into beat production, take a class in the simple genius of BDP and cop this. peace.
Essential Hip Hop.......1999-05-21
I wish I could express to the younger hip hop fans of today how important this work is. In 86/87 when these cuts were out, KRS One & Rakim elevated the hip hop game like Magic & Bird elevated basketball (although you probably wouldn't remember that either). "Poetry, South Bronx, P is Free,Bridge is Over, Criminal Minded" would be mandatory learning if there was a Hip Hop 101 in college. The relevance of " The Bridge is Over" and "South Bronx" as answers to MC Shan's "The Bridge" claims that Queens started hip hop cannot be understated. What followed was years of intense battles of radio allegiance between KISS-Fm & WBLS, both important role players in the legacy of hip hop. Although I have to rate Rakim as the greatest MC ever to date, KRS-One/BDP probably had a bigger overall impact. I love DMX,2Pac,Biggie, and the more recent MC's as much as anybody, but respect must be given to the foundation the pioneers laid down for those brothers to succeed. Buy this CD and get to know an important piece of hip hop history.

Legendary.......2006-04-14
In 1987 a new generation of rappers entered the scene. One of the most aggressive newcomers, was a young battle-rapper from Bronx named KRS-One. Together with his best friend and producer DJ Scott La Rock he started Boogie Down Productions, but Criminal Minded was the only record La Rock made, before his tragic death. Later BDP became a big crew, with D-Nice and Ms. Melodie as members.
Criminal Minded have become a legendary album, and that's for several reasons. Scott La Rocks instrumentals are a constitutive factor. Besides it was released on the underground-label B-Boy Record, and the record was hard to get. At least that time. The most important thing though, are the music, and this was really hard-hittin' stuff. It wasn't necessary to enter into any compromise, and each and all 10 songs was 100% pure hip-hop. It was used drum-machines, which was the trend at that time, but there's also some samples here. Actually this is one of the first times James Brown got sampled. "Poetry" are based on "Soul Power", and "South Bronx" are based on "Funky Drummer". Speakin' of "South Bronx", it's actually Ced Gee from Ultramagnetic MC's that produced it. The same goes for "The Bridge Is Over".
Criminal Mined was a refreshing different record. It's often this who characteristic a classic. It's not so easy to explain, but there's something about the mood, and the attitude to KRS-One, which makes this so special. Great songs such as "Poetry", "South Bronx", "9mm Goes Bang", "P Is Still Free", "The Bridge Is Over" and "Super Hoe" are all timeless which still are used as samples. Artists like MC Ren and Black Star have used beats from this record, and that says something about this albums status. KRS-One's battle with MC Shan and Marley Marl are of course eternalized here, and we even got some early tastes on both political and gangsta rap. KRS was before his time, man.
Other classic material by BDP: By All Means Necessary (1988), Edutainment (1990)
Classic Album, must have.......2006-03-17
I have been wanting to get this album for months and it was definitely worth the wait. The entire album is great, definitely better than By All Means Necessary (and that is not easy); moreover, I would place it in the top 10 hip-hop albums of all time. If you like rap at all you need this album.
As for the songs, they are all awesome. The Bridge is Over is a great diss song; I love the simple beat, the lyrics, the reggae style.
Super-Hoe is a funny song about Scott La Rock being a "Super Hoe"
----------
KRS-One:
Whatever you could do or say inside a bed
Scott LaRock has done and most likely said
He doesn't argue with a girl cause yes, he has others
Keep updated on all kind of rubbers
Got ones that are lambskin, others that are plastic
One day he'll open a school for prophylactics
They don't know... (He is the Super Hoe)
----------
Then there is Poetry, South Bronx, 9mm Goes Bang, Words From Our Sponsor, pretty much the entire album is great and there is no filler, get it while you can.
Classic oldschool rap - it takes a bit to get used to, but in the end rap fans will love it!.......2006-01-10
Boogie Down Productions' "Criminal Minded" unfortunately sounds a little bit dated, but if you can look past that then you will find that this is an AWESOME rap album. Led by the great KRS-One (who I argue sounds pretty similar to Will Smith - sorry I had to say it) is a very charismatic and unique rapper - most people will really like him. The beats here, while not anything new, are still fantastic as every song here is good or great. It's a relatively slow-paced rap album that is definitely not meant to be played at clubs or parties - you'll still love it, though. The only complaint I could give is that it definitely needs a good remastering. The lyrics are all fun and interesting to pay attention to, though they aren't really deep at all. It's essentially just a have-fun and slightly thought-provoking kind've album. If you're a fan of oldschool rap or KRS-One (or rap in general, I suppose), it would be pretty hard not to love "Criminal Minded". Highly recommended!
Highlights include:
the entire album!
The original The classic.......2005-10-06
I cant really say anything about this classic album that hasnt already been said but if you call yourself a true Hiphop head and dont own this you had better put down the Lil Wyte and get down to the record store and cop this immediately. KRS came in the mid 80s with a style like no other and when you look at MCs in terms of longivety KRS is still one of the top battle rappers of all time and hes still spittin lytrics non stop. I still love to pop this album in from time to time just to listen to scott larocks genius. This an any of KRS-ONES albums up to KRYSTYLE are highly recomended.
"This is KRS-1".......2005-09-14
Wah-Da-Da-Da-Dang. KRS-1 in the beginning and still today hard core to the end. Back in 86' when the true B-boy ruled KRS was at the top of the list. I have been a rap fan since 1982 and my opinion which should mean something is this is one of the BEST productions ever. Granted, for the new kids you might not care for the simplicity or how raw the music is, but this is when most rap actually ment something, when the rap section in a music store consisted of about 10-15 cassette tapes at best. I bought this new back in the day. Do yourself a favor and buy this one while you still can. God bless DJ Scott La Rock.

Nice Compilation!.......2000-09-08
The beautiful guitar is a compilation of 14 mellow, almost jazz like, tunes from 6 of Satriani's previous CD's that was released only in Germany. The disc demonstrates Satriani's mastery of his instrument. With the exception of "I Believe" the CD is entirely instrumental. If you believe that Satriani only plays heavy rock guitar, this CD will make you second guess that belief. A nice compilation for your collection but a little pricey.
A great collection of Satriani's softer ballads........2000-07-18
This really is a beautiful album. It features all of Satch's softer songs up to the year 1993 and is great for any fan of excellent, well-written guitar music. It has a nice mix of electric and acoustic numbers. Included is one of his most famous and best songs "Always With Me, Always With You" which is a popular selection for many figure skaters to perform to. "All Alone" is another that is used in skating and is just as great. "Cryin'" is another very heartfelt number that is one of my favorites. "Why?" is slightly heavier, but just as nice as any of the others. I could go on, but I'll just say that this album is great and well worth the price. And it would be excellent to dance to, by the way.
A must-buy CD.......1999-12-14
If you love Satriani and beautiful guitars, this CD is for you. ALL the songs inside are awesome, compiled from Satriani's various albums. It is worth the price!
