Funny and catchy...great '93 hip hop.......2007-01-12

Y'all So Stupid are a rap quartet from Atlanta whose name has been completely forgotten through the years, a group that dropped one great album and faded into obscurity. "Van Full of Pakistans" is an extremely entertaining and fulfilling album of great early 90s hip hop. The group consisted of Uncle Buck, Logic, H2O, and Sha Boogie, four guys with so much character and personality that it carries the entire album. But for guys with so much style, a closer listen shows that they are really exceptional MCs. They have a lot of depth and drop lines that make you laugh or think, like "Don't call me a negro, cause my knee ain't grown since eighth grade" or "My pops is on lockdown for life / my momms is my dad and she doesn't seem to have a social life." Lines like these are on every track. The four MCs cover a wide range of topics, usually being crazy and humorous but also tackling issues like the urban family structure, racism, and difficulties in life. H2O stands out to me as the best of the four, but they're definitely all very talented. While they represent the south, they don't show any of the characteristics that would become synonymous with ATL rap, and they're obviously more influenced by New York music. The production is also very good, usually upbeat and creative, using good instrumentals but not really over the top. Listening to "Van Full of Pakistans," you can see a lot of similarities to The Pharcyde, not only because their subject matter and production sounds similar, but the MCs actually have similar voices and sometimes harmonize in the same way Pharcyde does. "Van Full of Pakistans" is an excellent album, but definitely not perfect. While there are a handful of songs that will make you drop whatever you're doing and say, "Wow!" there are others that just don't. A few sound like kind of clichéd and basic 93 hip hop, and while it's excellent in all respects, the album isn't the most consistent in the world. There are also eight completely unnecessary interludes that add absolutely nothing to the product. Nonetheless, "Van Full of Pakistans" is a great listen, obviously very obscure and underrated today, but one I highly recommend.

The album begins with "Introduce Me," an upbeat and funky, catchy song with great instrumentals, and the rappers introduce themselves as great rappers on a good song. "85 South" is one of the absolutely phenomenal tracks on this album, a song that interpolates all the best elements of 93 rap. Great, funny verses, an awesome chorus, and interesting beats are all part of what makes this song perfect, a must for riding in the car or chilling to. The title track is similarly amazing, a slower song where a contemplative Y'all So Stupid discusses the problems and difficulties in life, like drugs and the shady rap business, over the best beat on the album. I love the chorus ("Think of all of our problems, all I ever do is try to solve `em / But all I need is a mack and let me loooose myself..."), this is a heartfelt and deep song executed to excellence. "Bowl of Soul" is upbeat and showcases the rappers' lyricism pretty well. "The Plant" is well produced, but it's just an okay song to me. The blunted weed-ode idea seems pretty familiar, I feel like I've heard this song done before. "Bootleg Beatdown" confronts one of the biggest problems for 90s rappers: the street-corner bootleg tape salesman. "Family Tree" shows the group at their conceptual best. This song confronts "the black family," and the problems in the familial structure of African Americans. This song is thought provoking and interesting. "Dirt Road White Girl" is as well, discussing "white girls who try to be black." "Monkey Off My Back" has a good trumpet sample, and "Super N..." is entertaining but not absolutely memorable. "Y'all" is all around very solid, a highlight for sure, as is "On & On." The album ends with "You Wouldn't Understand," a good and musically catchy song, and a nice remix to "85 South."

Y'all So Stupid was somehow connected to Da King & I, I'm not sure of the specifics but they shout each other out a lot and were on the same label (Rowdy Records). Fans of "Contemporary Jeep Music" should check out "Van Full of Pakistans" for sure. This is a unique and entertaining showcase of hip hop from the best year of the genre, 1993. Fans of The Pharcyde or Black Sheep will also adore this album. It's definitely not perfect, but it's got something that really appeals. Should "Van Full of Pakistans" come your way, I highly suggest you pick it up, this is a great album that should not be ignored.

Yall So Stupid = Mass Influence.......2006-05-01

Like many of you reading this, I too was a teenager during the late 80's/early 90's and had the honor of listening to the quality hip hop that formed my listening habits for years to come. Not many groups post-2000 can compare to the sounds and ill vibes produced during raps golden era. But one of the few "new school" crews that caught my attention was Mass Influence in the ATL. So just what does Mass Influ have to do with the "Van Full of Pakistans" album by Yall So Stupid? Well, group member H20 is coincidentally a member of both! I first stumbled upon this a few short years ago after Mass Influence's "Underground Science" album peeked my interest in my dealings as an online record shop owner. For all intents and purposes you can consider "Van Full Of Pakistans" some early Mass Influ material that doesn't disappoint.

Right, where to start, where to start. Now, I bet when you decided to take a look at this cd you were not expecting to scroll to the bottom and find a 5 star rating from a group called "Yall So Stupid" and an album titled "Van full of pakistans"?. Well, neither was I when I heard it... but I can confidently claim it has to be one of the most suprisingly fresh and genuine Hiphop albums I have ever heard. And, take it from me I know my hiphop (Mainly Underground,Old School,Uk Hiphop you name it) but my speciality is that early-mid 90's ish...and this I can actually class as a 1993 classic!. Now picture Pharcyde (Bizzare Ride II the pharcyde in 1992 - probably the most original album in hiphop), now give it a NY sound and you've got "Yall so stupid". How comes nobody has ever heard of these guys? Nobody knows...but from the front cover and the name you can tell these guys are in this to have fun. BUT, that doesnt mean to say that the lyrics arent on point, that their styles arent fresh or that their flows arent tight, because they are, oh they are! and best of all the beats are top-notch!. With that typical early -mid 90's sound provided by the producer from the duo "Da King & I" "Van full of pakistans" will have you nodding your head before you can say "I can not believe what I am hearing!". Now, incase that doesnt do it for ya, ill break it down a little better just to emphasise how these cats "get down". Now, the album offers an essence of that funky vibe (Bowl of soul), to serious issues (family tree), wacky/funny (the plant), quintessential early 90's headnodding (bootled beatdown & introduce me) and thats just to name a few. Theres 22 tracks (14 songs & 8 Skits)...but dont fear the skits do not slow down or hinder the progression of the album, it enhances it making it flow like every album should. Now with that said, this orignal cd is quite hard to find since its Out of print so it may cost a bit, but take it from me...its worth every penny. Plus it'll make you probaly like the 5th person in the world to own it or something ridiculous! Convinced yet? Now do yourself a favour and try by any means necessary to get/hear this, and if your disapointed then you don't appreciate fresh hiphop! PEACE!

Think of "The Pharcyde." Now picture them coming outta ATL. Now give them a NY sound. Now you have "Y'all So Stupid."

Okay, I know...Pharcyde is one of the most creative and unique crews in Hip-Hop history, so naturally nobody can touch them; but if you love The Pharcyde (who doesn't???) then you owe it to yourself to check this out.

YSS consists of 4 members; H20, Uncle Buk, Logic & Sha Boogie. As you can tell from the front cover of the album, they're a bunch of wacky guys and they're in this to have fun. The cover really sets the tone for the great album, YSS crams 22 tracks onto their debut (14 songs + 8 interludes).

The tracks widely range from funky (Bowl of Soul), to funny (The Plant), to hard-head-nodding (Introduce Me), to loungin' (Van Full of Pakistans) and even serious (Family Tree) - just to name a few. Whatever track it is, the beats are always surprisingly top-notch and the MC's always come nice, each with a personality of his own.

I wanted this CD for 2 reasons: 1993 was the greatest year in Hip-Hop (85% of the albums were amazing) and Majesty, the producer for the ill duo "Da King & I" produced "The Plant" and "Bootleg Beatdown." Those were the only reasons I needed.

Anyway, I just got this CD last month and have listened to it maybe 10 times. The album is so layered with such diversity, you can listen to it again and again - with a different track becoming your favorite each time around. Honestly, the last time I heard such a creative and diverse CD was Pharcyde's "Bizarre Ride" and that's my favorite album ever.

Bottom Line: This album is SOOOOO slept-on it's a shame. I don't just hand out 5 star ratings (like most reviewers seem to), the album has to REALLY deserve it. 5 stars, Peace.

Solid early 90s hip hop album.......2005-07-14

This is a solid early 90s hip hop album that often gets lost in the shuffle of so many classic hip hop albums from the early-mid 90s.....Its definately worth a listen if you love rap from this time period....
