As a greatful owner of every release by the man (misc. songs included), I could write an 80 page essay on what there is to love about Brother Ali, but I'll state it like this to save everyone's time: If you don't like Brother Ali, you don't have a soul.

I was extremely impressed by the video and lyrics to Uncle Sam..., consequently I bought each CD. I returned all but The Undisputed Truth. Please keep in mind as you read this that I am a 51 year old woman and it is quite unusual for me to buy anything even resembling rap nowadays. I find Brother Ali refreshing and believe him to be a man with a strong social conciousness. I was not always impressed with the beats or rhythms in this CD...some sounded choppy to me... but I truly appreciated his lyrics.

Brother Ali is a good lyricist. If you reminise back to Scribble Jam, it shows him battling pretty well. But him as an MC droppin an album, it doesn't fit him. I guess everybody has their own perspective taste in hip hop. He brings up good concepts but his rhythm attraction really lacks. His beats is just terrible. You don't have to have a phat beat to have a good song but I don't think anybody would sound good spitting to these beats. If you're that type looking for the deep ill rhythm blending in real soul instrumentals, this album is not for you. Rhymesayers is full of talented emcees but this one im not feeling. An emcee that I highly recommend (Not from Rhymesayers) is RODAN - Theophany: The Book Of Elevations. After listening to this album you'll definetly know what im talking about. OnE............

Wishing upon a star.......2007-05-18

This guy means well, and is a pretty good lyricist, but thats as far as this album goes, i give him credit for choosing to have different content than the usual rappers lately, but then again, he don't have much choice, he's white. He basically has 2 songs on the whole album, and then each of those songs are done about 7 times, to slightly different beats, which are garbage, i never understood how artists can release albums with beats like these, don't they listen to them before hand? maybe its because he's a lyricist and so he's too wrapped up in himself to understand a good beat. Of all the songs, he has 1 that is worth having on your ipod "here", but other than that, if he wants any kind of success, he needs real production and he needs to learn that an album shouldn't be one giant rhyme battle, it should be an album, with different tones, different voice perspectives. There is a reason eminem is the only successful white rapper, he understands the difference between making songs for an album and battling, that and he has always had Dr. Dre to show him what is and is not a good beat, in Dre's case, a great beat.

Beware.......2007-06-25

The reviewer that stated that these songs are remastered IS correct - contrary to the many people saying otherwise. Smiling Faces, while decent enough, has been redone. The end result is that it's too orchestrated and overly "smooth". It has lost a lot of it's original bite.

I'm gonna give this five even though I don't own the cd. I do however own all the albums on vinyl, and its criminal that the only cd releases are 2 best ofs and "face to face with the truth". Motown or Hip-O selct need to remaster the first 6 albums and release them on CD, (their last two were released on Whitfields on record label)But until then, do yourselves a real real favour and try and hunt down these vinyls, because these compilations don't do the group any real justice. You need the whole truth and nothing but the whole truth. Maybe we need to start a poll and nudge these record execs to "do the right thing"

Other notable "truth" songs not on cd include (imho) "California soul", "If i die" "sunshine" "i saw you when you met her", "our day will come", "i'm losing you", "ma" and "misunderstood"

The Undisputed Truth, or "Underrated Truth" as I sometimes call them, are generally remembered today as the "Smiling Faces" group, but producer Norman Whitfield really took them to fascinating musical heights in the years following that everlasting hit. You need to buy a turntable, and hunt down their old albums to completely understand the Truth.

Unfortunately, you can't buy records on Amazon, and turntables aren't exactly the most practical means of home audio. So, just go ahead and buy this album, even if you own all the records. Just so you can hear "Lil' Red Ridin' Hood" remastered in your thumpin' car stereo, with the windows rolled down, while you're cruisin' through the ghetto!

"Law of the Land" is a pulsing, rythmical, complex soul/funk work-out. It has grooving chops, and dynamic vocal and string arrangement. Sorry to say, I don't know the stand-out female singer's name, but this lady can belt it like the best Motown vocalists. She makes you wanna gasp for air whenever you hear her.

"UFOs" is a pristine example of the group at their pulsing, psychedelic funk rock best. Great lyrics, trippy sounds fx, goofy vocals. Very interesting stuff.

"Lil' Red Ridin' Hood" is almost the penultimate black rock song. This one, I think, is up their with some of Funkadelic's most grungy opuses. The premise for the song is genius: a young, pretty, rich girl in a red dress walks through the ghetto and gets harrassed by a funny-cigarette smokin' brother. Instrumentally, the song is simplistic, and frankly have a thrashy, head-banging feel. Vocally, the lyrics of the verses aren't melodic, and are "exclaimed" more than sung, giving the song a unique and threatening feel. I dig it as one of my favorite '70s recordings.

"Help Yourself" is a great song, but I'd much rather have the version from the Higher than High LP than this one.

"Poontang" a fun, raucous funk romp. It's a self-referential song where the singer talks about dreaming of becoming a star since childhood, how he recorded "Smiling Faces" (or "a hit record" as it's referred to), how it sold sold a million ten days after it was first released, "and that sounds alright to me!", he says. Consequently, he gets a lot of Poontang. Good, bouncing, joyous funk with great horn arrangements...naturally.

Well the Truth of the matter is, this's just a sample of the what the band was all about. But until they finally release their whole original albums on CD, this is the best you'll have to do. Please Universal, please give us the Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth, in the form of a BOX SET. Now that would be NASTAY.....

at oberon "from motown": "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for The Undisputed Truth. The Single was released in the spring of 1972. This is almost forgotten, because later in 72 Norman Whitfield revised the song for The Temptations and created the grammy-winning funk symphonie.

If it weren't for Smiling Faces .......2005-06-17

This actually is rather good stuff. There's Gospel and Funk, and Disco, and some Psychedelia on this slab of cd. I do hate thier lone hit though, and that was the "Smiling Faces". I hate it for many reasons; for starters it's a turn off to me the way that they sing about people only pretending to be your friend. Well after all they are the Undisputed Truth, but it still hurts, and so does the harmonica. You see I hold out for the faith that there are people out there who love you for who you are, and not what you can do for them. I feel my favorite here is thier song "Higher Than High". It's got some real grooves there, and it's sounding rather psychedelic. The rest are good too, but I just wanted to finally vent on "Smiling Faces". For those who have been hurt by people, and want to turn your back on them just remember this "A who wants many friends must be a friend himself..., but there's a friend who sticks closer than a brother." Proverbs 18:24.

Slayer Shows Their Real Influences........2007-07-18

This is the music that Slayer was truly inspired by. The 80's hardcore attitude. Minor Threat, TSOL, The adolescents, The stooges. That right there is some of the best music you'll ever hear. Slayer is an incredible band and I like that they covered punk bands who influenced them because that's pretty much where the thrash genre originated from. Thank you Slayer. You guys shredded in the 80's and you're still thrashin' now. Keep up the hardcore and punk attitude. And why don't you cover a Dead kennedys song?

Being relativly new to Slayer I can still understand why some fans might feel alinated by this album, but I can't understand why anyone would call Slayer sellouts for making a punk tribute album done in classic Slayer fashion. Basicaly you have an album full of two minute Slayer songs . And the problem is what exactally????? These aren't Ramone's or Clash covers, they pull off beautifuly 3 Minor Threat songs which are among my fav's. You get the same Slayer sound only without the satanic lyrics. Top notch album.

This is my favorite Slayer album (gasp). Slayer playing old school hardcore punk covers -- could anything be more fun?? This is one brutal disc and it is exceptional. Awesome display of chops!

If you are some sort of metal purist,well then you shouldn't be listening to thrash, let alone Slayer. To call this album a "sellout" is ridiculous and demonstrates a high degree of ignorance. How can an album so brutal be a "sellout"??

First off, kid. What's your age, 12? Slayer's Undisputed Attitude is not a new album, it's over 10 years old (may be older than you). Second, how is Slayer selling out by doing a tribute to music that basically started hardcore, thrash and speed metal (which Slayer was considered in the beginning) along with many other of the genres today. Do some research on punk and see all of the genres that came from it. Also, is it a crime for Slayer to be a fan of punk? Third, Slayer has come out with several albums since then and none of them are slow or even a different style of music. They don't even campare to the change that Metallica went through. Learn what a sellout is and don't run your mouth so much!!

The nearly 11 minute 12" version of the infamous disco jive song is actually included on cd labeled DISCO CONNECTION, also found on Amazon, and as for the Undisputed Truth? True, I am a big fan of 70s, even 60s soul, but this group was never for me other than the big disco song. I much rather hear stuff like Papa Was A Rolling Stone, Ball Of Confusion from other groups.

good funk, very unusual sounds from a group........2007-03-09

I would agree with the other reviewers, that there are one or two songs here that were always played on the 70's dance floor. Also the group dramatics had some good dance floor songs which were popular. However there are also a few songs on this cd which are not so good. The question remains why has nobody ever put together a 70's dance compilation that ever has the same songs that were actually on the dance floor in the 70's. Any person familar with disco or dance music will agree the 70's era dance music just is not available on compilations. Altho the market for such a product would be terrific.

Who`s Tampering With the King?.......2006-11-20

After "Dude" and "Back to Basics", Beenie Man lay claim to the title King of Dancehall and with good reason. But he didn`t stop there. The ace deejay went on to record a series of blistering dancehall smashes during 2004, 2005, and early 2006 which set the dancehall on fire and galvanized his claim as dancehall emperor. The release of Undisputed was eagerly awaited. However, while it is a plausible package, it does little to display the full worth of the artist, failing to include very little of his most popular recent work, a lot of which was still in the pre-release stage and was anticipated to be included here. It almost seems calculated to downplay the hardcore nature of probably the most versatile dancehall DJ around.
FIRST THE OBVIOUS STRENGTHS...
Absolute hits which are included are "Come Again" and "Heart Attack". Driving, intricate dancehall beats on the two tracks lend extra shine to Beenie`s flawless delivery which, by the way, is everywhere on the album. These two are straight fire.
Beenie Man and D`Angel team up to deliver "Beenie Man", one of his best tunes, but which is sabotaged by a weak hook sung by Angel.
'Hmm Hmm' is a known and proven club-banger...enough said.
Other good ones are "Chaka Dance" a remixed version of a the original "Chaka Chaka" done in 2004, and which acheives the same frenzied effect as the original that can make parties go wild.

NOW TO THE INTRIGUING STUFF...
"Welcome to My World" and "Undisputed" are in a class by themsleves. Beenie takes time to deliver a different flavor on these two and also on "My Woman". Musically 'My World' is miles ahead. 'My World' is a classic sleeper track which gets off to a slow start with Lady Saw, comes into its own quickly, and by the end it`s begging for a rewind. On my first listen I skipped past it; didn`t impress me. A second listen and I was humming it. A third listen and I couldn`t get the beat out of my head for days. What makes it even more clever is the couple well-veiled references to his rival Bounty Killer.

AND THE REST...
Again, Beenie`s delivery is great throughout the album, but weak lyrics and unimpressive beats dog him in tunes like 'Girls', with Akon, 'Jamaican Ting', 'Duty Wine Gal' and 'Walk Out'. Those are among his worst tunes on any album I think. How those songs earned a place on an international release from the same artist who did Art and Life is beyond me. The man has so much hit material he doesn`t need fillers. Something just doesn`t make sense. Oh, and 'Set You Free' is just ok.
'Fire' is of course Beenie`s experiment in reggaeton, and it works. At least for me. And I HATE reggaeton. I wonder if people who really like reggaeton like this track, because Beenie does the job of keeping it a lot more dancehall than reggaeton-sounding. After all, original is original.

So there is more to like, than not to like, and more to dance than to stand still, but I cant help but compare this package to what I know this "Bulletproof" DJ who "Set Di Trend" is capable of.

Not his best.......2006-10-05

This album is just not Beenie Man's best work. I found this album to be missing some crucial tracks (We Set The Trend, Swing Eh Weh, Jamaican Style) and a few more. Anyway, there def are some real good tracks on there, such as heart attack, hmm hmm, beenie man, but he still fails to nail it. The reggaeton song was a very bad idea, it just doesn't flow with the album. I was expecting big things from Undisputed, but didn't get what I thought I would.

since Back to Basics which was brillient i waited for another album from beenie. after he released a few Very tight mixtapes he got to this. i am very happy cus this is tight as hell.
all the songs are good, nothing isnt bad, but the reggaeton thing sucks. but still i love this album and i am happy he is back.

Fitting for a King?. . . .......2006-08-30

2 years ago fans of Beenie Man were treated to what was one of his finest albums in a very long time, Back To Basics. B2B was a 15 track nearly totally dancehall smash of an album which featured 2 of Beenie's biggest hits Dude and King of the Dancehall.

Now just 2 years later he returns with an attempt to follow up on that fantastic album. While definitely whats going on, on Undisputed is more than interesting, this is one of those cases where whats going on outside of the studio is even more interesting. Amidst rumors of leaving his longtime mangers, Shocking Vibes and splitting with his longtime band (and the best backing band in d'hall) Ruff Kutt, and his marriage to a model who just happens to be the ex of his decade+ long rival Bounty Killa. Everything is crazy for Beenie Man!

And while some may question his acts outside of the studio (especially if he really fired Ruff Kutt!), his actions inside the studio are becomming less and less questionable. Undisputed is not as good as Back to Basics, not at all. But when you just take the artist's part of it all, Beenie's flow hasn't lost a cut at all.

The best tune here is probably the first JA single, Hmm Hmm, the song is the big sounding vibe that was found on King of the Dancehall from B2B, not surprisingly both are produced by the brilliant Tony Kelly. The biggest hits here which were previously released are Heart Attack and the MASSIVE Come Again over Vendetta's Sweat riddim. The flow on Come Again is something out out of a Papa San/Twista lyric handbook, flat out brilliant! And definitely one of the best songs on the album.

Also check My World featuring longtime spar Lady Saw which features the best hook on the album outside of Hmm Hmm (there are HIS/HER choruses!), the two always make a good team and My World ranks up there with the best of them. Also, Set You Free is more an old school (at least melody-wise) sounding vibe over a Black Chiney riddim. And his tune Beenie Man is at least interesting because it features his wife, D'Angel singing the hook, and the flow is of course masterful.

All that being said, the musically most interesting tune on all of Undisputed is the title track. The song features a wicked wicked sampling of Conroy Smith's Dangerous (pat yourself on the back if you remember the original). Undisputed is a fine fine tune, and credit goes to the continuously brilliant Black Shadow.

There are missteps here: I'm not too fond of the second single, Girls with Akon or the Storch produced Dutty Wine Gal, Storch's other production, Jamaican Ting isn't a very strong tune either, however, it is ultimately saved because of the sickly flow Beenie builds around it (especially the last verse!), and the reggaeton tune Fire. . . NO! (and on a sidenote, how do you not put Wi Set Di Trends on this one?)

Overall, however, the good here far outweighs the bad, and the bad even isnt that bad. Beenie Man is as sharp as ever, proving he is one of the few acts who could probably write a full album in his sleep. Glad to see him back, glad to see Lady Saw with him, and this album will appeal to many of the same crowd that liked B2B, there are no obvious crossover attempts (even with Storch on board) and its a fine fine effort from the Undisputed King of Dancehall.

Swoop G, the LBC rapper proves on this album that he has all it takes to be a major rap star in the dope game. The album is all good, from beginning to the end. The production is just fine and the album features many artists, especially some of the Bay Area rappers like JT The Bigga Figga or 3x Krazy and Cydal. It's just pure gangsta rap comming from Long Beach, Swoop delivers a very surprising album. You won't realize how perfect this album is untill you get it. And if you have any doubts. Over 150 thousand people can't be wrong. I really think it's one of the most slept on joints ever. A tight bumpin' G-funk joint by my LBC loc, Not To Be Fucced With has a good beat, Gangstas In California is another bomb joint by Swoop rapping about G's from the LBC, SCLA, Inglewood, Pomona, O-Town, Frisco & Sac-Town, East Side Madness featuring T.Luni & Tray Deee is a tight G-funk joint about the crazy east-side, and Simpin' Into Pimpin' featuring Poppa LQ is a tight joint with an eazed G-funk breeze to it. Tight G-Funk Melodies.......2006-03-01

First of all, I mean to give this album 5 stars. Swoop G takes the LBC by storm in 1997 with Undisputed. he is a tight lyricist, and adapts well to his variable beats. Beatwise, the general feel is, of course, G-Funk. A few beats may be a little weak, but then there are several that are surefire classics. The standout track is "G's house." The beat takes you back to a time when the West was on top, and fun, relaxing G-Funk beats were blazing in stereos all around. it is perfect for lowriding around the town. Some Bay area heavy hitters like 3X krazy, Cydal, and The Luniz rap on the album, and some others like Bosko produce hot tracks like "Gangsta in California," and JT Bigga Figga creates fire on "Who Got the Gangsta S--- pt.II." So, there is a medley of a Long Beach and Bay Area feel to the whole record. So, despite a couple of songs with weaker beats, the album is a definite late 90's banger!

Swoop delivers a classic album that is a must-have. This is actually one of my favorite albums of all time. Mainly because of the beats he has on several tracks. Its full of the G-funk flavor and a nice old-school feel. Some of the best tracks are 3,9,11(great beat), and 12 which I think is the best song.

Finally, Slayer creates an album that matches the furious savagery of its breakthrough American debut, Reign in Blood, and wouldn't you know it, it's a bunch of cover tunes. In Slayer's speedy mitts these hardcore classics from the early and mid-'80s have twice the impact of the originals and actually sound a lot like outtakes from Reign in Blood minus the gorey lyrics. The original versions of these tunes don't have the ripping solos created by guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, but aside from that one liberty, all the songs are done with good faith and reverence.

There's little doubt that at one point Slayer was influenced as much by Metallica as D.R.I. Unlike Guns 'N' Roses' weak attempt to patronize their punk idols on The Spaghetti Incident?, Slayer perform tunes like D.I.'s "Richard Hung Himself," Verbal Abuse's "Verbal Abuse/Leeches," and Dr. Know's "Mr. Freeze" with such verve and exuberance that it's hard to question their sincerity. The biggest letdown on the entire record is a new original, entitled "Gemini," that slogs along. Their cover of The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is more spirited.

Punk purists may object to a metal band paying homage to these tunes, but Undisputed Attitude proves the two worlds aren't that far apart. Hopefully Slayer will draw from this inspiration once again and create a new album of originals with the same punishing hybrid of hardcore and metal.-- Adem Tepedelen

Ultimate headbanging fun.......2004-01-19

I dunno why some reviewers bashed this CD. It never meant to be serious Slayer product. Rather, it's their tribute to those bands that they loved to listen to while being teenagers. And it's also a proof that 1980's punk is a very aggressive and violent music.

I was stuck from the 1st spin, really. It's a simple yet effective, often at 160+ bpm, angry, straight, in-ya-face music. It screams "Love me or get the hell outta here", and that's cool. My favourite tracks here are the speedy ones, and "Richard Hung Himself", too.
And the new Slayer tune, "Gemini" proved to me that there's something in Bostaph's drumming that I might have missed listening to "Divine Intervention". The drum fills and skillful tempo delays in the end of this track are a must-hear Slayer-esque classics.

Don't expectanything serious out of this record. Just put it on and have mindless headbanging fun!

Oh, and this was also the last decent Slayer record, too.

A Slayer Cd with cover versions of the songs that influenced them! Cool, or..? Not at all. This is a collection of punktunes buildt around three powerchords. All of them are about one and a half minute each. Allright if those tracks had some kind of charm in their original versions but none of them are really good, eaventhough Guilty of being white has cool lyrics. Just imagine a cover collection of songs by Megadeth, Priest, Anthrax, Sabbath, Venom and Maiden. This is the worst Slayer cd out there. Please buy something else.

This is a very excellent CD. A guy named "Sepultribus" gave this 1 star because it's not "metal". Slayer is as metal as it gets. It is very awesome that they would do a tribute to hardcore and punk music, rather than be closeminded, limited to a single genre, and do what's "acceptable" because fans like Sepultribus are lame category fans and not truly MUSIC fans. If you like music, and aren't some closeminded "tough" kid-- mall metal loser-- BUY THIS, it is very amazing.
A SLIGHTLY different direction for these guys but still holds on to the heavy sound and attitude Slayer is known for.
Not recommended for the mall metal Slipknot drones out there.

I just didnt like this one too much. I mean its heavy and it is good...just not as good as they usually are. The songs on this cd are not thier own. they redid them and made them heavier.

Let Punk-Rock and Thrash Metal stand prod and united........2002-05-19

I have always liked Punk-Rock, and I LOVE Thrash/Speed metal. What Slayer have done here is put them together and it RULES!!
Every song on here is a winner. Old and long time fans of Slayer will not be let down here. Even if they hate usually hate Punk-Rock, and Old, long time fans of Punk-Rock who usually hate Thrash should also buy this. Amazing guitarists John Henneman and Kerry King give there very best here.
