On his 1998 debut Fantasma, Japanese recombo master Keigo Oyamada, a.k.a. Cornelius, sampled pure pop styles from Music Machine to the Beach Boys to stadium acts such as Wings and icons such as My Bloody Valentine, redreaming them into an orchestral tribute pastiche. His Devo-like live band then toured the U.S. as a hybrid retro-rock show more akin to his '80s band, Flipper's Guitar. FM is an album of celebrity retreatments of Fantasma's genius DJ treatments. The hip-hop identity mantras of "Mic Check" by Money Mark and "Free Fall" by U.N.K.L.E. trace the streets of Shibuya to the streets of Brooklyn, where stardom meant an infinitely repeatable tag. The High Llamas, Buffalo Daughter, and the Pastels hybridize Cornelius against their own signature sounds. The Esquivel-like vocalese of "The Micro Disneycal World Tour" makes a nice High Llamas cut. Pizzicato Five's Konishi Yasuharu reveals "Count 5, 6, 7, 8" as speedy Bacharach ultrapop while Blur's Damon Albarn delivers a bright but menacing Casiopop version of "Star Fruits Surf Rider." The palsied jungle of Coldcut caps an album of cutting-edge DJ re-recontextualization that passes the true test: the tracks hold up as entirely new works. --Dean KuipersCustomer Reviews:
Fantasy "Mix".......2005-03-25
It starts off with a taut hip-hop rendition of "Mic Check" by Money Mark, followed by a bubbly, whimsical remix of "Micro Disneycal World Tour" by the High Llamas, which loses some of its impact when the banjos kick in. Cut out the banjos, and the remixed song would be really, really good.
"Clash" is remixed by the Pastels, who really don't add anything to the song. "Free Fall" by U.N.K.L.E. is a solid remix, percussive rock with spacey overtones, and Coldcut's remix of "Typewrite Lesson" is a solid, weird one with a too-long intro. I can only take so many minutes of swirly static and electronic bleeps.
However, "FM" has two absolutely gorgeous remixes. The EP peaks in the third and fifth songs: "New Music Machine," a gloriously offbeat remix by Japanese avant-pop band Buffalo Daughter, complete with robotic vocals, murky guitar and spacey electronics. And Blur's Damon Albarn produces a sparkling, catchy, slightly out-there version of "Star Fruits Surf Rider."
This is actually the one-in-a-million worthy remix album -- most remix EPs simply take a few songs, add extra electronic blips and wavers, a bit of distortion, and that's it. But since Cornelius had some truly good bands and artists doing this, such as Albarn and Buffalo Daughter, it's far better than remix EPs usually are.
Naturally, people are tempted to hod this up against the original "Fantasma" songs. Don't do that. The remixes are able to stand on their own, whether sparkly and warm, or spacey and rock-ish. In other words, judge the remixes by their own standards, because sometimes they are quite different.
"Fantasma" was an outstanding album, but "FM" is pretty good in its own right. Despite a lackluster remix by the Pastels, it stands above most remix albums.
