In a world oversaturated with box sets and anthologies, it's tempting--if not downright easy--to overlook a self-congratulatory, and conspicuously tardy, endeavor like Tommy Boy's Greatest Beats, a five-volume retrospective of the seminal hip-hop imprint. Don't. Although the label seems more focused on their highly successful MTV Party to Go and ESPN Jock Jams series than street-based hip-hop, the compilation aesthetic serves them well on this box. Rather than present a chronological walk through the label's history, this box consists of four mix discs that feature surprisingly successful (and occasionally bewildering) segues, and a consistent flow of high-energy tracks. Although there is a little electro-boogie, (most of that element of the label was saved for their Perfect Beats series), you get hits by Afrika Bambaataa, Coolio, Queen Latifah, Naughty by Nature, Stetsasonic, and the Force MDs, plus a remix disc featuring some leading DJs (Jason Nevins, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris) and a great booklet with lots of color pictures that make great period pieces. The box is a fine testament to the enduring vitality of hip-hop; most of the tracks have aged well, and some that didn't were improved by the remix. --Martin Johnson

True to the DJ-dominated era which birthed most of the songs found here, the four CDs even come packaged in a miniature milk crate like the ones favored by spin doctors the world over.

One of the seminal hip-hop labels, Tommy Boy has turned to the successful MTV Party to Go and ESPN Jock Jams series as cash cows, but increasingly the label is also turning to its vaults. Following the Perfect Beats series, a four-volume collection of New York electro-funk and dance music of the early and mid 1980s, comes Greatest Beats, a four-volume series of the label's finest hip-hop, with a sprinkling of R&B. They've left the chronological approach to Ken Burns and his ilk and sought to make mixes that are equal parts historical documents and party tapes. Volume 1 launches with Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force doing "Planet Rock," a song that defined summer 1982. Then the disc seamlessly jumps into the 1990s for Naughty by Nature's "Everything's Going to Be Alright" and Digital Underground's "Doowhutchyalike." In all, it's surprising to see how well Latifah's "Ladies First" and K7's "Move It Like This" aged and how much better the Bambaataa-James Brown collaboration "Unity" sounds without the nearby shadow of "Planet Rock." The mixture of radio, 12-inch, and LP versions creates an interesting combination of funk, rap, and soul. --Martin JohnsonCustomer Reviews:

Tommy Boy Records, one of the leaders in the compilations trend, has programmed this series of "greatest hits" to be part historical retrospective and part jam tape. On volume 2 the music segues confidently from the Soul Assassin throb of House of Pain to the proto-techno grooves of 808 State, with stops in between at Force MD's soul classicism, K7's pop dancehall, and Club Nouveau's lite R&B. The highlights on this volume are supplied by Naughty by Nature's "Feel Me Flow" and "Uptown Anthem," Digital Underground's "The Humpty Dance" (which still sounds funky), and De La Soul's "Ring Ring Ring." The volume also makes a vital point about the importance of up-tempo dance music in hip-hop by pairing Queen Latifah's "Come into My House" with Coolio's "1-2-3-4 (Sumpin' New)." --Martin Johnson

Though volume 4 of Tommy Boy's Greatest Beats, a four-part retrospective and party mix from the label's vaults, starts with Apache's "Gangsta Bitch" and ends with Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise," there is none of the gangsta aesthetic anywhere to be found. Apache's work is a humorous novelty, and Coolio provides a seething lament, yet that's about as close to the Too $horts of the world as this label gets. Instead volume 4 offers more of the dance and electro-boogie side the roster. RuPaul makes his first appearance (with "Supermodel"), as does the Jonzun Crew with "Pack Jam," a track ripe for a Squarepusher-ish remix. Some of the tracks haven't aged well; for instance, Stetsasonic's "Talkin' All That Jazz," sounds quaint, owing to its relatively facile acoustic bass line and their tendency to rap right on the beat rather than just behind it (as is the case in most jazz-influenced raps). The high points lie in rediscovering lost pleasures: the didgeridoo-like intro to Naughty by Nature's "Hip Hop Hooray," Digital Underground's playful "Kiss You Back," and some early Jazzy Joyce on Sweet Trio's "Non Stop." Like volume 3, this one doesn't stand on its own as well as it makes a companion for either volume 1 or volume 2. The box set, which collects all four volumes with a fifth disc (of remixes), might be the best place for these two. --Martin Johnson

A big part of the fun of homemade mix tapes is solving the geographical riddles: how to get from track 2 to highly dissimilar track 5 while making musical sense in the segues. Judging from the disparate items on volume 3 of Tommy Boy's Greatest Beats series, the programmers must have had a blast. For instance, they get from Coldcut and Lisa Stansfield's housed-out "People Hold On" to Paris's smoldering "Break the Grip of Shame" in a matter of three tracks--specifically, Coolio's "Fantastic Voyage," Club Nouveau's Why Do You Treat Me So Bad," and DU's "Same Song," which features 2Pac clowning around with the (Digital) Underground. There are more clunkers on this volume than on others in the set, but the high-wire acts in the mix tend to hide the flaws well. --Martin Johnson
