Is there a rap fan out there who didn't like "The Message"? It took rap in an entirely new direction: while others were content to ride the "Double Dutch Bus" down to the disco, the Furious Five spoke out about social decay. The chorus of "The Message" ("Don't push me, 'cause I'm close to the edge / I'm trying not to lose my head / Sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under") describes the effect of Reaganomics in ways that Dan Rather never could. Of course, Grandmaster Flash and company weren't against partying. In fact, they cut some of the best party tracks in the genre's history ("Freedom," "The Birthday Party"), along with some battle raps ("Step Off," "Showdown") to complete the package. Copyright restrictions probably kept the beat-edit classic "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" off the track listing. Still, one glaring omission isn't reason enough not to pick this up. --Todd Inoue

I can't imagine a rap fan out there who would argue that Grandmaster Flash & Furious Five were not one of the best of all-time. Recognized as one of the pioneers of rap, particularly for turning rap into mainstream music, Grandmaster Flash should be respected for his work and ability to work with multitude of talents. "The Message" has to be regarded as one of the most popular rap songs of all time, and possibly in any type of music. That hit has been re-made, mixed, and sampled so much that even youngsters that were born after the hit was recorded will recognize the sounds. "Step Off" was also a hit during the break-dance era of the '80's, and many fans found that song more enjoyable than given credit for. Speaking of enjoyable hits, who didn't enjoy "Beat Street" (from the movie Beat Street) back in those days? It has to be regarded as one of the most fun rap songs to memorize, and "New York, New York" is another one that many enjoy rapping themselves. "White Lines" is a hit that many initially had no idea what the meaning of the song was supposed to be, but many figured it out after a while, once drug usage in urban areas of the country became heavily exposed to the mainstream audiences. Original lyrics, street-cred, hip beats/sounds, and strong social messages... Nothing seems to be missing in this compilation. If you like old school, make sure you add this one!

The Beginning of an Era .......2006-07-18

If you consider yourself a hip-hip fan (espically if you listen to most of todays garbage pop fake hip-hop, this is a must that you have this in your collection. Grandmaster Flash was one of the pioneers of hip-hop and even though this collection of songs was taken from the early 80's, it still holds up with its rawness. Its a shame that hip-hop has reached what it is today and the just arent enough hip-hop artist that do it just for the love of the music. Its a cruel world today in the music bizz, as most of the hip-hop artist of today are creations of some billion dollar record company and signs them to be the next MTV music hit. If you want raw, no nonsense hip-hop from the early days before artist cared about being #1 on TRL, this is a great place to start. ENJOY

Grandmaster cuts faster.......2005-11-01

Extraordinary music. Listen to what DJ GM Flash puts together: the grooves are so carefully fashioned and leap out at you time and again. In particular I've never heard a funkier slap bass sound - ever.

And let's talk MCs. Why don't rappers these days attack the mike anymore like these guys did? Are they afraid it's not cool to be energetic? Well no wonder no one dances to rap music anymore. But when you listen to this - the grooves and the punchy vocals - you will definitely move your body.

Only problem is: when you get hold of any other Hip Hop after this you'll be disappointed that the DJs don't cut as fast and clean as this Grandmaster.

The Quintessential 'Best Of' Collection.......2005-06-14

Like many of you, I've only heard "The Message" prior to purchasing this incredible 'best of' collection. As you probably know, Grandmaster Flash and company were recording the most popular rap songs in the early 80s. Most of these songs are stunningly wild and fun party jams. But in 1982, they released "The Message", which is considered to be the first rap song to be pushed from a novelty party jam, to a chilling prophecy, featuring effective social commentary. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five built a rock solid bridge for Run-D.M.C. to step in, and push their "Message" even further, which eventually brought the hardcore edge to hip-hop. Whether you know it or now, their presence is still felt to this day, since hip-hop hasn't made that drastic of a leap since Run-D.M.C. (that's quite debatable). It also helped that the production was flawlessly perfect. It featured dub, electro, and R&B that was sure to hook nearly every listener of urban radio.

So if you're in the same boat as me, you're probably asking yourself, "Are their any other good songs from Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five?". Well, the answer is yes. This is probably the best single disc best of collection you'll find from these guys. These are long infectious party jams. Many of which include the artillery of a large emcee battle, such as the epic Furious Five / Sugarhill Gang collaboration of "Showdown". A song I didn't think I'd like given the title, "The Birthday Party", actually turned out to be one of my favorites. Although, "It's Nasty (Genius of Love)" would have to be one of the most under-appreciated rap songs of all time. It's got one of the most clever attacks on the compilation, and will surely please any and all hip-hop lovers. They do tackle a bit more social commentary on tracks like "New York New York" and "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)". The latter features hard hitting lyrics about the dangers of drug use, and probably the most effective lyrics in it's time, given the subject matter. The only knock I have on the album is the first track, "Step Off Megamix". It's merely a "megamix" of their most popular songs thrown into one track (recorded in 1994). It would have been nicer if they would have thrown in a old-school jam up front, or at least put this track at the end, since the original versions shine much brighter throughout the remainder of the album.

Overall, if you're into old-school rap, this is a great listen. It's chalk-full of groundbreaking historical material. If you're at all interested in the evolution of rap, from the pre-Run-D.M.C. days, then you owe it to yourself to check this out. One could only be happier about the completeness of this collection.

With the exception of one new track--the cynically titled "One for the $," by the Sugarhill Gang and Melle Mel--and some commentary by Ice-T and Public Enemy's Chuck D, there's nothing on The Showdown that can't be found on other collections. The Showdown also skips some important classics--"The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" and Grandmaster Melle Mel and the Furious Five's "Beat Street" among them. Those quibbles aside, this collection does achieve its goals: by showcasing the Sugarhill Gang--who emphasized the party groove from which rap came--and the extended Grandmaster Flash family--who saw themselves as social messengers (pun intended)--side by side, the album brings to light the pair's differences and groundbreaking creativity. I was only 13 years old when I bought this album on vinyl. After 20 years, for the first time on cd, this masterpiece is available again! This is the first album without Melle Mel and Cowboy, so without The Furious Five. Someone said that the magic was ended after the singles the message or white lines, but I don't think so. My prefer tracks are: Rock the house, Alternate groove, Girls love the way he spins and sign of the time.

This set is a three-disc box of material recorded by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (plus a few cuts headed by Grandmaster Melle Mel). Adventures on the Wheels of Steel spans all the way from their earliest, pre-Sugar Hill recordings (the great singles 'Super Rappin' No. 1' and 'Flash To The Beat') to the mid-'80s material recorded after Grandmaster Flash split from Sugar Hill (both he and Melle Mel headed collectives composed of former members of the Furious Five). this is a very good complilation of old school rap. This is good for the soul. Classic stuff. Caveat: the 2000 release was censored. Some tracks were 'beeped' on the the curse words. Just not acceptable. All they should do is put an advisory sticker on the package and let the buyer decide. Aside from the censoring, for which I docked a star, the music is amazing.

This is the best compilation CD I've ever heard!!! If you're 31 and over you must have this. This definitely makes me reminisce about my younger days when hip hop was in its infant stages. Grandmaster Flash is truly the DJ of all time and he definitely proved it by releasing this breathtaking mix.A true pioneer and creator of "The Message". The guy was obviously light years ahead of everyone back then as well as today. This mix starts off with Flash's cool intro changing into Nu Shooz-I cant wait.The mixmaster includes The Fatback Band-I found Lovin' which had one of the tightest beats for 1984.Flash also includes monster tracks such as D-Train's you're the one for me,Indeep's Last night a Dj saved my life as well as Afrika Bambataas' Planet Rock where he adds some of his own scratching in a phenomenal way. I also had a chance to see him live in SF a few months ago and i honestly lost my mind. If you are into this kind of music(best there ever was unlike today's waste)you have to buy this cd. A true classic with over 70 minutes of the best mixing and scratching. The Flash is the best Dj of all time.

Since I've purchased this CD, it has hardly ever left my car, much less my CD player. Flash is on top of his game here. He includes such classics as "I Can't Wait" (Nu Shooz), ""Before I Let Go" (Maze), and "Rapture" (Blondie). This CD is a must have for those who love the genre. It will provide a nice flashback to the 80s and have your car mirror quakin' with some serious sounds. It is good to know that each song is mixed into the next one and Flash does not miss a beat.

Another seminal mix album from Grandmaster Flashý........2003-10-30

Not to be confused with "The Official Adventures of Grandmaster Flash" which still stands as one the greatest mix Album ever.....this is more of a personal introduction of music from the 80's era with a seminal track selection from the Grandmaster. And as soon as "Nu Shooz's - I Can't Wait" kicks of the proceedings, it just an amazing retrospection of why some of the 80's bands where held in such high regard. "Blondie" makes an appearance with one of her best tracks "Rapture" (where she was one of the first white females to rap), and "Indeep's - Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" disco-anthem, with the godfather of soul...'James Brown' appearing on "Give It Up or Turnit a Loose" providing the funk side of things, and not forgetting "Afrika Bambaataa's - Planet Rock" provides a non-stop catalogue of hits....obviously supremely mixed & Scratched by Grandmaster (who subtly mixes in the tracks, instead of grand scratch heavy introductions)....if you haven't bought a Grandmaster Flash album then buy "The Official Adventures of Grandmaster Flash"....but if you already have that (or can afford to buy two albums)..buy this as well, for a wonderfully insightful look at the music that influenced the Grandmaster.

This CD is such a pick-me-up! In fact, I'd say it is one of my very favorite sunshine, summertime CDs. Flash keeps the mix moving with classic sing-along tracks that are all guaranteed to make you smile.

This was indeed the pioneer days of hip hop music. It might not have been as profitable then as it is now, but these brothers really had something to say that made since and that was really relevant to the times right now. "The Message" is indeed a true classic song for all ages. Kudos to Grand Master Flash and my main man Melle Mel.

Mixed Bag from rap pioneers.......2007-06-12

This Cd is actually of a complete early rap album from about 1982. At this point, rap albums were more or less collections of an artist's recent work and not recorded as concept albums per se (I think it was either Run DMC's self-titled debut or Whodini's Escape that broke this trend).

In either case, this was released to capitalize off of GMF's Summer 1982 hit "The Message." Every rap fan knows about this tale of the ills of ghetto life and one of the first serious rap tunes. One other tune that comes close to this is their remake of "Its a Shame." The joyous, party feel belies the serious and stark lyrics.

"It's Nasty" has the guys doing what they do best, good time party rapping in an ensemble style. However, this Cd also contains the hideous technojunk "Scorpio" which consists of sickening synthesizer banging and incoherent rapping through a computerized voice box (with none of the charm of Roger Troutman, I might add). The guys also make the mistake of trying to sing on "You Are." For some reason, early rap albums on the Sugarhill label tended to feature rappers trying to sing on at least one song. This trend thankfully ended as rap albums became more popular.

Overall, a mixed bag. Good stuff coexists with the junk, but there is enough good stuff here to make it worthwhile to buy used.

Excellent mix, shame about the crowd.......2002-12-18

Do you really want a crowd chanting "the roof is on fire" and making oo oo noises over some of the best music from Salsoul, mixed and presented extremely well in most parts by a legend? No, nor would I. Take the crowd out and you have 5 stars, it makes an excellent mix CD very difficult to appreciate in parts so be warned.

I was more than satisfied with this mix -- brings back memories of the good old days -- Lincoln Park, Hollis, Baisley, etc. -- jammin at night in the summertime (sneaking out the house and getting in trouble afterward). This CD is awesome!! It is a MUST Buy for us 30 and over folks -- remember the hustle?? If you are having an old school party this is defintely a cd you would want to play. My question is When can we expect Salsoul Jam 2001 and 2002??? I am anxiously waiting.

... So I went into a discount/used CD store, and I saw this CD. I bought it...

I drove from Dallas, to Austin, to San Antonio...and I think I played this CD in the car practically all of last week. The volume was pumped all the way up, and I just had a ball listening to it. And the recorded, intimate party crowd only enhances the CD. It makes it seem like you are at the party with them.

This is a CD I will treasure always.

The Grandmaster's biggest Fan!!.......2005-06-13

Hello world, I am GrandMaster Flash's biggest fan. I have gone to almost every one of his parties dating back to 1976 when I was 14 years old. This includes: The Black Door, The Sparkle, The Dixie, The T-Connection, The Disco Fever, The P.A.L.,The Savoy Manor, The outside park jams and I was even at The Audobon Ballroom in 1976 just to name a few. This CD is exactly how Flash used to electrify every one of his parties! He used to change records so fast and go right to the breaks with uncanny precission. The only down side to this CD is that it doesn't come with a video. Yes, it does come with an extremely thorough book " The True Life Adventures of Flash ", and I was very impressed with how candid he allowed himself to be for this book. However, one of the reasons hundreds of people came from all of New York City's borough's to his party's was to see him DJ. Flash was an amazing showman. As I remember at times, he used to use three turntables. When he wanted to show off he would mix and cut behind his back (on time and on beat), with his tongue, his feet and without looking...(sometimes I thought he was a magician). But one of the biggest reasons was how he "fanned the fader" when he mixed,(this is evident in the movie "The Wild Style" when he had a cameo in his kitchen) or when he was mixing, sometimes you literaly did not know what turntable he was mixing from...Amazing! His facial expressions while doing all of this were always serious and said I don't care what other DJ tries to cut this record, I do it much better and faster with more flare and precission! The other notable reason people came from all over to see The GrandMaster, as evident in this CD, was to hear the endless breaks that Flash owned. Not only did he play the breaks that were "commercial" in that era but he oftened gave his fans treats by playing records that were not played by the average or not so average DJ. For example, he would play Earth,Wind and Fire's "Moment of Truth" or Manu Dibango's "Senga" just to name a couple. The only other Djs that would do this at that time were The original Jazzy Jay from the Zulu Nation and at times GrandWizard Theodore, both are my 2nd and 3rd all time favorite djs. These were records that us fans said "Oh yeah, I remember that record." Moreso, Flash was extremely keen,(in my opinion) on how long he played each breakbeat. Some beats were brought in and cut a few times and some were given extended play. In addition to all of this, Flash had the Furious Five mc's rapping over some of these breaks to really get the crowd into a frenzy. I have to say that this CD is for all to hear ( the young and the ones who grew up in my era.) The only other small downside to this CD is that he did'nt give us more of him being at the T-Connection and at the Disco Convention. So all you new and not so new dj's, take note! WHoaaaa! The purest from of Hip Hop DJ mixing is right here. I'm 39 years old and I grew up in Philly, so everything he played or mixed on this CD I have heard from a third generation Grandmaster Flash tape or the dozens of neighborhood block parties during 1979-1983. When the Mobile Hip Hop DJ and block parties hit philly, it was the musical highlight of my childhood. The philly DJs - they played this exact music track for track. Philly Djs Cozmic Kev and Jazzy Jeff (prior to Fresh Prince) were without question inspired by Grandmaster Flash.

If you are from Philly, New Jersey or New York, are in your late 30s or early 40s this is for you. This is REAL Hip Hop history. This is the REAL history of looping beats. No gimmicks just 2 turntables a mixer, and plenty of break beats. Awesome.

Greatest Mix album Ever???....Along with "Coldcut's - 70 minutes of madness" quite possibly!!....Having had this Cd for a year or two, I revisit it every so often, and the reason why??...is because it pushes the envelope on how far the mix album genre can feasibly be taken...Grandmaster Confidently displays why he's arguably the greatest D.j in the world, through not only his unparalleled"Mixing, Scratching & D.j skills", but also through he's Meticulous Track Selection & knowledge of listener Manipulation.....everything from: Babe Ruth's "The Mexican", Kraftwerk's "Trans Europe Express", "Yellow Magic Orchestra's "Computer Games" & Eddie & the BBS Orchestra's "Do Want you Gotta Do", are intergrated & invoke such a feeling of Euphoria...that they sound as innovative & fresh as the day of their original releases. The Cd is also carefully peppered with original source material interviews of Grandmaster, detailing his love affair with Djing and highlight influences that helped shape his astonishing career. (all skilfully overlayed with a backing music track, for the era the interviews were first recorded)....Some of the greatness of this album can be lost on the listener that has no reference point for these mixes (i.e. they aren't familiar with the actual music in question), but ANYONE that remembers (or indeed has) ANY of this tracks first time around, should feel obligated to seek this album out, for one of the defining mix albums of the last 10 years.

Short on the Grandmaster Flash flava.......2003-01-05

Comments by Grandmaster Flash are true to form.What is missing is
'MORE' of the music he played (hits and non-hits) from the days he was at various parks in The Bronx.Also,I expected to hear more of Flash 'DOING WORK' with the music selected for this CD by showcasing his God given ability which is unlike no other.If these additions were added you have a '5 star' CD which is what the 'original' cut,mix,and scratch master truly deserved.I do not regret buying this CD but 'Flash' and fans deserve more of his mid 70's Bronx flava.

Liner notes great, but overall a weak collection.......2002-12-08

The liner notes are an excellent look into the story of Joseph Saddler/Grandmaster Flash as well as that of the early days of rap music. It also pulls no punches as to the reasons for Flash's decline. But on the whole, this Cd's actual music collection is weak. Yes, it has some of his scratching techniques and features a few interesting interviews with some popuar New York street jams of the late 70s in the background. But these tunes featured in the mix are late 70s technopop that could easily be found elsewhere. There are two tantalizing snippets of Flash performing live at some street jams in 1979 and 1982, but these are all too brief, lasting for a few seconds apiece after fascinating starts. Perhaps a whole CD of one of Flash's live shows from this period (a'la the Cold Crush Bros. "Live in 82" or "Battle with the Fantastic Five") might be a better idea.
