im on fire for alexis.......2006-08-24
Masterpiece, or Disterpiece.......2006-08-12
Alexis is a band formed from my hometown (St.Catharines Ontario, CANADA) and to tell you the honest truth i'm personally not to fond of the genre that Alexis is labeled under... but to support the local talant, i gave them a chance... their debute is much more raw, uncut, and more unigue... I guess you could say, their follow up is heading them to the mainstream (sadly enough)... "Watch out" is much more clean, melodic, and more easy on the ears...
Listening to their first album, then listening to this... its almost like an all new band, but of course it still has that AOF flare... Dallas does ALOT more singing on this cd (which isn't a bad thing at all, i bet dallas on this cd has widened their fan base) and as for Georges screaming, its much more polished and easier to listen too...
Now depending on who you are, and what type of music you perfer... "Watch out" can be a masterpiece, or a distasterpiece... Now if your a type of person that likes radio friendly, melodic, easy on the ears, sing along kind of music, with bursts of occasional rawness (if thats a word) that you can head bang to, then "Watch out" is indeed the cd for you... BUT... if your one of those indipendent band lovers, who likes it raw, and hates when bands go mainstream, or step into the lights of stardom... then this isn't exactly the cd for you.. but don't get me wrong... Alexis has something for both types of people... Their self titled is more raw, Watch out is more polished...
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not an expert... so people may disagree with the majority, if not all of what i said... but that is only my opinion...
I fell in love with this.......2006-08-04
If you're a fan of the genre or you've heard good things about the band, you owe it to yourself to check this out and give it a fair shot. I'd be surprised if you were disappointed.
Purely sublime..........2006-07-09
The music is a combination of hardcore and emo done in a good way. So many bands today are trying to fit square pegs into round holes in this genre. I love hardcore music and this cd touches on the heaviness of others greats in the field while exploring melody that is actually good. The performances are top notch. The screaming is good, the clean vocals from Dallas are amazing. Musicianship oozes out of this release. This is a must have in your collection.
Fantastic........2006-05-29
Some people could be put off by George's screaming vocals, but this is perfectly counteracted by the absolute bliss offered by the vocals of Dallas. My god that boy can sing.
Also, alot of people in their reviews have suggested that there is only one singer. Incorrect.
George Petit = Screaming
Dallas Green = Singing
occasionally Wade contributes also, but that is rare

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence. If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!

Strange coinkidink.......2006-06-01
Hackett the musical chameleon strikes again..........2005-06-26
Hackett is a prog rocker, going right back to the glory years of Genesis in the 70's, paticularly the 1970-1977 period were the band produced a powerful array of music. Since then Steve has become a musician striving to explore ALL sides of music, like former Genesis band mate Peter Gabriel, he will try any type of sound. He has released a number of albums, including 'Please Don't Touch' (1978), 'Spectral Mornings' (1979) and 'Guitar Noir' (1992) that are considered classics.
And so this album 'To Watch The Storms', Hackett's first effort since 1999's anticipated 'Darktown' album. Here Hackett shifts gears effortlessly. The album has a tremendous mood throughout, and Hackett has a guitar sound that is truely distictive. From the calmness and nostalgia of the opening track 'Strutton Ground' to the prog throwback 'Circus Of Becoming', this is a perfectly crafted work.
Hackett has also become a very good lyricist, with some thought provoking words to go with his musical soudscapes. And he is a good singer, half prog, half blues croke is how to describe it best.
Other highlights include the uplifting 'Brand New', the unbelievably heavy political protest song 'Mechanical Bride', which Hackett almost scares you with its insanely wild instrumental passage. The gentle, elegant 'Rebecca', with it's classical acoustic guitars is a nice contrast, as is the powerful love song 'This World', with it's moving chorus.
'The Devil Is An Englishman' and 'Marijuana Assasian Of Youth' are both completely insane rock riots, with Hackett malevolently sinister on the former, and playing the Batman theme on his guitar on the later...
And to round off, as always their is a set of stirring instrumental pieces, from nylon guitar songs like 'Wind, Sand And Stars', 'If Only You Knew' and 'The Moon Under Water' to world music epic 'The Silk Road' and the atmospheric 'Pollution B'.
Oh and there is just time for some full on blues with 'Fire Island' and some Irish folk with 'Come Away' and surrealist jazz with the muted and moody 'Frozen Statues'.
This special edition version of 'To Watch The Storms' ios beautifully packaged, with great artwork by Hackett's girlfriend/artist Kim Poor, and sleve notes by the man himself for every track. If you want diversity, complexity and beauty, this is the album for you, i HIGHLY recommend this album.
Close but no cigar ..........2005-04-29
I'd recommend it.

A Musician of Great Dignity and Style.......2005-07-27
English is a difficult language to make musical, though saying that abruptly is countered by the fact that some of the most beautiful operas in history are by Benjamin Britten, a composer who truly understood his native tongue and kept it as fluid as the soaring melodies he wrote, as Thomas Allen proves here in 'Billy in the Darbies' from Britten's 'Billy Budd'. It is the other major arias from Korngold to Wagner to Tchaikovsky to Rossini, Bizet, Mozart, Gounod, Verdi, Thomas, Strauss, and Lehar that Allen proves that English translations do not detract at all from the performances!
For those purists who prefer opera sung in the original language (and for those who don't even need supertitles in the opera house!), then this recording may provide a temporary barrier to respecting Allen's singing. But once caught up in the ease with which he moves from style to style and comedy to drama, it is hard not to relinquish old preferences and not be wholly impressed with the beauty of the voice and the warmth and dignity of this fine musician. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, July 05
