Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Surreal, intriguing, excellent music and recording.......2004-12-27

listening to the music is like enjoying the beautiful surreal movie once again without seeing it. The more I listen, the more I love it - it's the Amercian Dream story, it's the Iggy Pop music, it's the Johnny Depp narrative make it a valuable collectible CD. This is a new version, the recording is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2003-09-02

This is the album that sounds even better without the Movie.
Goran Bregovic mixed traditional european Folk music with more modern styled instrumental and rock music.with this mix and his talent to make a moving and touching songs he created a masterpiece, delightfull voyage to teh darkest and most mysterious places...Goran added sytnhs, bass, delicate guitar (simmilar a bit to mike Oldfield),and a massive wall of drums...Check out "Dreams","Old home movie","Gunpowder","Dreams" and a huge hit "Tv screen" with Iggy pop on vocals.Definitly one of my Desert-island albums,a must have for all instrumental music fans and for everyone as well!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Versatile Composer.......2003-06-30

As most fans of Bregovic know, he is a versatile composer who blends well contemporary music technology with traditional flavors of eastern European gypsy and still manages to remain above the par of the usual techno-studio corporate music that attempts to stamp the "World Music" label on its own concoctions. "Arizona Dream" doesn't disappoint even the hard to please of Bregovic fans.

5 out of 5 stars Murphy's Law.......2001-03-04

According to the band's recount of the making of "Carry the Banner" everything was going wrong, but that didn't stop them from releasing yet another great CD. This nine song album is done by Aaron, Billie, Jason and Bill. We get a wider variety on vocals on this release, even Bill the Bassist sings one..."I Am The Stranger". Unlike most of the SF East Bay bands, this album did get some radio airplay out in the San Francisco area. It includes a great cover of "Mahogany". Give this one a shot.

4 out of 5 stars Pinhead Gunpowder ROCKS!!!!!!!!.......2000-09-14

Hey what's up?, I must say that I couldn't get this CD but I have most of the songs in MP3 and they are COOL!!, I Want to get the CD, I tryed but I steel don't get it. This band is pretty cool, is like Green Day, but the songs are more shorts. Green Day is my favorite band but I like very much Pinhead Gunpowder. So, don't expect a super-band, but expect a really COOL band... That's all, oh...sorry about my english, is not very good, I speak spanish... Good Luck and If you want another cool band search DILLINGER FOUR is a superband!!, almost better than Green Day!!, (not better) search it!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars title for my review.......2006-02-18

dude, they cover 'achin to be' by the replacements. billy joe's ties to the midwest are paying off. yeah.

5 out of 5 stars soso good.......2005-07-22

I absolutely love this album. Bilie joe's voice combined with aaron cometbus's make such an interesting record. It is like old green day but better. Interesting songs, if brief but taht just makes u love them more. If u did like green day, or any east bay punk- op ivy, rancid, anything like them u will seriously love this. i own everything green dayhave ever done and also everything pinhead gunpowder have ever done. This or jump salty( a comp of EP's) are 2 amazing records taht didnt leave my stereo for about a year.
Ive grown out of green day but i have grown into phg if u see where im going and with their new success and under 13 following now is definatley the time to stock up on some PHG and rememer why you like BJA and that he is still has amazing vocal/musical talent- despite what green day's image represents now.
This album is just fantastic and the starting lyrics 'election night that wonderful crowd'- is really memorable and the beggining of a great song. they rock. really. get all the other albums to- bearing in mind that carry the banner is the only mildly dissapointing one that i would have to lower to 4 stars instead of 5. Let me know if I have convinced any of you to buy this record! You wont be disappointed ....* god i really do sound like a mad fan....i'm not even paid by adeline for all this brown nosing!*

5 out of 5 stars Every song is a hit .......2004-09-18

This is not close to being their finest work but it is still another great release. This is the album Billie joe aka Wilhelm Fink had the most to do with. He wrote a song for it and sang almost every song. Cabot girl is probably one of the best songs in punk history.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD From A Great Band.......2003-01-25

When I first heard this band I thought it was to good to be true. I was really pi$$ed off because Green Day aren't punk anymore, and their old stuff is so great. Then I heard this. They sound just like old and better Green Day! They even have Billie Joe in the band! But anyway....This Cd is 11 Min. of great punk rock. With amazing songs like "Achin To Be", "Kathleen", and "Asheville", this can easily be called Pinhead Gunpowder's best CD. If your not sure about this band, listen to "Big Yellow Taxi". That will definatly convince you to listen to these guys. So if your a fan of old Green Day, or you like punk, go buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Best of Pinhead Gunpowder.......2002-10-01

If you like this cause of Billie Joe Armstrong, than you are not a true fan. Sure, Green Day is the best band there is, but to like PG just for that is dumb. Anyways, this is without a dought the best album by PG, with awesome songs like "Cabot Gal", "My Boot in Your Face Is What Keeps Me Alive", "Junkpile" and "27". I reccomend this to anyone who listes to punk-rock. Best song on the album, JUNKPILE...

4 out of 5 stars Nice to see this thing.......2003-04-01

This is a pretty good album, and a living proof that Green Day after leaving Lookout in 1994 they did not sold out their culos....at least Billy Joe kept their punk influences in a pretty lubricated side-project album with these guys of Pinhead Gunpowder...and he keep supporting the cause with Adeline Records......

5 out of 5 stars very good very very good.......2000-02-25

i was really impressed with this album."losers of the year"is probably my favprite track on the album if i had to pick one. it's got energy that can keep you goin' and sing along with. i think it is killer.

5 out of 5 stars kick-ass cd.......1999-05-04

Dude, this cd rules! Pinhead Gunpowder is one of the greatest bands to ever come out of the Bay Area and Lookout Records! Anarchy!

5 out of 5 stars the fuking best.......1998-12-02

The best album on Lookout! next to 39/smooth, "Duct Tape Soup" and operation Ivy's "energy"

5 out of 5 stars harder than goodbye ellston avenue, but just as satisfying.......1998-07-31

"jump salty" was the first album i bought of pinhead gunpowder. i was really surprised when i first heard it. it was a lot "harder" than i expected. never the less, i liked it. i liked it a lot. although bj wasn't singing lead, whoever it was (i suspect it was mike, but i don't know) did a great job. one of the songs on the album is a cover of joni mitchell's yellow taxi cab. i liked it and i hope you do, but you won't know until you try.

4 out of 5 stars great album! what green day should sound like.......2006-05-24

if you look at this and see "billie joe armstrong" and immediately turn your head, then you are very close-minded. billie joe proves that he can be good when he wants to be. first, this album is very good pop-punk that shows resemblence to bands such as down by law and later descendents as well as insomniac era green day. sorry, i know this band isnt JUST billie joe and isnt green day, but you cannot ignore the fact that if billie joe armstrong sings the majority of the tracks, comparisons to green day are a definate.

so anyways, i recommend this to all insomniac/dookie era green day fans as well as pop-punk fans. you wont find another horrible band like blink 182 with PG. sorry kids, but blink 182 and bands of the likeness arent even good enough to deserve the "pop-punk" label. they are merely pop bands with guitairs and speed....this however is the real deal!

5 out of 5 stars Best PHGP album.......2004-09-18

This is the best album ever put out and all of their releases are good but this one standsout as the best. I think that the only thing really missing from this album is Mike's growling vocals that Jason White tries to mimic but it just sounds kind of weak. Best song is "lIFE during wartime"

5 out of 5 stars in the words of Bill and Ted: "EXCELLENT!".......2004-03-01

amazing. totally and utterly AMAZING. Green Day's amazing, so why wouldn't PHGP be? exactly! it is amzing! great songs! great guitars! great everything! the lyrics are out-standing. aaron cometbus is an incredible song-writer. this is by far the best Pinhead Gunpowder CD. if you like Green Day, then you'll like PHGP. buy it and i gaurentee you won't regret it!

stand out tracks:
2) without me
3) high matinence
4) backyard flames
5) song of my returning
8) train station
10) brother
13) the great divide (this song is my favorite! i even made a PHGP shirt with the beginning lyrics of this song on it in graphic arts)

5 out of 5 stars Hooks? Yes! Beats? But of course!.......2003-10-26

Not to start a flame war at all, but somebody below me wrote that this record lacks in hooks and beats. That's patently silly. Yes, Aaron's drumming is more textured than that of Tre Cool, but that's part of his charm as a drummer, as well as part of the charm of PG. Hooks? They're here in abundance. "Backyard Flames," "Life During Wartime," "Once More Without Feeling," "Brother," "Work For Food," I mean, the list goes on. True, it's not as immediately poppy as Green Day; which is maybe why I've always enjoyed PG more. Plus, the lyrics on this record are just really, really good. They're like "Cometbus" essays shaped into songs. Really, really incredible stuff. This is one of my favorite records of all time, and I'd recommend it to anybody who loves music and even remotely enjoys pop punk.

3 out of 5 stars Not great, not terrible.......2001-09-14

I learned about this band after I became a GreenDay fan - and I just HAD to try it out. I heard that BJ sang most of the songs on this album, which also made it even more intriguing to me. I think I can describe this in 3 magical words: "eh it's okay."

Make no mistake, this is NOT Greenday; and this paragraph shall be about just that. The only Greenday CD this sounds even a BIT like is Insomniac: frantic pace, somewhat weak vocals, 1:30-1:50 minute songs. Most of Greenday's songs had really good beats, and were *fairly* catchy. This CD is far from that style - you wont find any "when I come around" type of songs on here...or even "Westbound Sign" types either; WS was catchier than any song on this CD. If you could take early Green Day (when they hadnt found their nack for strong hooks) and mix it with Insomniac - this is what you'd get.

Okay well that's a lot of what PG is NOT. Here's what they ARE. They are quite talented, and quite good. "Life During Wartime" is by far the best song on here, and is one of my all-time favorite punk songs. I heard the acoustic version of LDW and it's *awesome.* "Brother" is good, but depressing. "I Walk Alone" is good, as well. I loved the tune on "work for food" but the lyrics stunk and made the song kinda [weak]. The rest is pretty much unlistenable.

I love good punk music, but this just doesnt cut it. Even punk needs good rythems and hooks - too bad PG doesnt offer that on this CD. I suggest buying this CD for Life During Wartime, and maybe you'll be able to tolerate the rest better than I can.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must have c.d.......2005-10-19

I am a huge Green Day fan and once I heard that Billie Joe was in this band I decided to check this c.d out. And well...THIS C.D RULES!!! To keep the review simple I will say that this is great for any Green Day fan. My favorites on this album are as follows: Future Daydream, Freedom Is,I Wanna, Big Yellow Taxi, Beastly Bit, Bencia By the Bay, MPLS song, and Hey Now. But ...this c.d is younger Billie Joe like from 1991-1992. The only bad thing is this c.d is just over 24 minutes, but it still a masterpiece. And for 8$ it is a steal.BUY THIS C.D!!!

5 out of 5 stars Billie Joe's Side Project.......2005-06-18

A must have for any Green Day fan. Imagine Green Day, only grittier and rawer. This album has been a staple in my collection for the past decade and should be a staple in yours. This punk rock super group gets straight to the point. They cut out the fat and all you are left with is the raw power of pumk rock. Listen to this and you understand why Billie Joe is a star.

5 out of 5 stars Always good.......2004-09-18

Pinhead Gunpowder can't do no wrong. Every album is pretty much gold this album is no exception. I like how Billie Joe and Mike vocals really work together. They are so different that it makes the songs really itersting. This is old school Billie Joe before Kerplunk even.

5 out of 5 stars Vocals From The Gut.......2001-03-04

This earlier release from Pinhead Gunpowder is one of the great examples of the different sounds the memebers of the band bring to the table. The members of the band in 1991 when this album was recorded were Mike Kirsch, Bill Schneider, B.J. Armstrong and Aaron Cometbus. (In future releases Jason White replaced Mike) Mike adds a lyrical growl to the vocals that gives this realease it's originality. This album brings more to the table than just the Green Day connection, it adds in qualities from other SF East Bay band sounds like Monsula, Sawhorse and Fuel (the old now defunct SF East Bay band, not current day Fuel). Check this one out, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Billie Joe+Suprisingly awesome Cometbus lyrics=best CD I own.......1999-05-22

For any fan of punk, alternative, or rock- if you don't own this cd- your missing out on something that you- really DON'T want to miss out on! From the awesome mind of Aaron Cometbus and the odd-enough vocals of my favorite singer BJ Armstrong (Green Day) , Pinhead Gunpower really 'Carries the Banner' (band pun) in this, my favorite, PG album, not to mention one of my favortie albums ever. From the first second of the catchy 'Life During Wartime' to the beatiful lyrics of 'Song of my Returning' to the emotional story of 'Brother,' this album fills all of your musical needs in a lean 23 and a half minutes. It's definetly the most well spent elleven dollars of your life. If you like this CD, check out Green Day's 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours for similar tracks and good lyrics from before Billie Joe got all f-word crazy in Dookie , Insomniac, and Nimrod. Two words- BUY THIS CD- wait, thats three words. Oh well!

4 out of 5 stars SHOOT THE MOON REVIEW.......1999-04-13

This CD IS AWESOME, but has 2 flaws..

1. ITS TOO SHORT!! only 11 minutes and 23 seconds of this killer punk rawk.

2. songs 4 and 6 are way too familiar..Neil young tried the same thing but I think he did a better job.

other than that it rocks...the last song is that best...number 6 is cool too!

5 out of 5 stars bloody brilliant!!.......1999-03-26

From the first suspiciously "Stuck With Me" riff of "Life During Wartime" to the final crash of "The Great Divide", Goodbye Ellston Avenue tears along through 12 songs of pure punk in around 25 minutes - and for all of those minutes, this album screams 'CATCHY' down your ear until you have to give in and sing along. Its nothing new and I don't think Aaron Cometbus or Billie Joe Armstrong are going to pretend that it is but for sheer quality punk music, look no further.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch pop punk.......1999-03-19

This is the only Lp released by this punk rock supergroup and is well worth buying if you are into poppy punk rock. It is one of those rare albums where every song is really good. It is in my opinion their best material that has been released so far. Too bad it is only a side project and they don't tour because i would love to see them live. Also check out their other albums, especially Jump Salty, which is a collection of 7" ep's and comp. tracks which has their amazing cover of Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchel. Also they have a new CDep coming out soon on billie joe's new label called adeline records and the name of the new album is "shoot the moon".

5 out of 5 stars great cd.......1999-03-12

Definately different from Green Day, but it rocks...the final track on this cd is a great one. Buy this pinhead gunpowder cd first, then work your way to the older ones.

3 out of 5 stars The second release.......2004-09-18

This was phgp second release and it isn't quite as good. They miss Mike alot but they still crank out some pretty good songs. This cd is worth it for the Mahogany cover and Walking contastrophe which sounds like an old school punk song that green day couldve easily penned and made a hit. I would only get this album if you are a die hard fan or want to complete your collection you might like this better than i do.

5 out of 5 stars great music all the way.......2000-01-21

i think ive reviewed all the Pinhead Gunpowder Cd's and once again Pinhead Gunpowder has put out great punk rock music....i am a fan of Green Day also a fan of Monsula (Bill, Bass/Vocals)and Jason and Aaron Cometbus's lyrical storytelling is solid once again. The cover song of Diana Ross's Mahogany is (as already mentioned)a great cover.

    5 out of 5 stars Where's The Beef?.......1999-08-05

I ordered this cd not to long ago, and it's really great!!! I'm a big fan of Green Day, and with Billie Joe helping sing in this band is really noticable. It's a really great cd and you really need to buy it if you're a Green Day fan. Also, buy they're other cds....they're great too!!!

3 out of 5 stars blah, blah, blah.......1998-09-02

Personally, I am not that fond of Billy Joe or Green Day. Were they not commercially successful I would not feel this way, but I do because I secretly resent their success. But a friend of mine plays in this band so I listened to it. The line-up of this band is good... particularly Aaron Cometbus (ex-Crimpshrine) and Jason White (ex-Chino Horde.) So the music is not going to be bad. If you like Green Day, you'll like Pinhead Gunpowder because they sound a lot alike. But then again, Green Day sounds a lot like most other bands hailing from the East Bay, it's just that they get paid more than anyone else for sounding that way. Truth be told though, this album contains probably the best cover of Diana Ross' "Mahogany" set to record and makes the purchase worth every penny.

2 out of 5 stars good try but..........2005-06-07

This was a good try to make an acleptic disc, but... The result wasn't as nice as it could be. Song's are bored. They don't get you lintenig to them more than 30 seconds. The styles covered on the disc are very wide ranging from noise to latin hip-hop. Hard to fit all of them on the same disc! this is acheved in a good way... The problem is that all the songs are at the same level, and it's not too much high.

Listen just as an example of what can be done combining styles on he same production. Not as a reference for anything. In one Word: Borred. Just turn around and look for something else. The money is not rewarded with this cd.

3 out of 5 stars Underwhelming debut from an overwhelming talent.......2004-11-10

As a turntablist, DJ Rupture is up there with the brightest talents of his generation, charting hidden links between all manner of different genres - from reggae to raga, Dead Prez to drill'n'bass. His is a heady brew of unexpected stylistic juxtapositions, so - in some ways - it's hardly surprising that his debut album as a recording artist, "Special Gunpowder", should be so darn eclectic itself. Rupture flits all over the place: one minute dancehall, the next Latin House, then it's on to dub, trip hop, electronica and some cracked folk that wouldn't have sounded out of place on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack. Impressive enough, but Rupture falls short of making any of the genres he dabbles in his own - what's sorely lacking is any unifying voice and, though the tracks on offer are consistently competent, they're seldom remarkable. It's ironic: while there's no doubting Rupture's abilities, he's a lot more distinctive when spinning other people's records than when he's playing his own.

    5 out of 5 stars What a brilliant record!.......2004-10-06

    Friends, Lovers, Countrymen,
To be honest I read a quick blurb about this record on Pitchforkmedia.com and decided to check it out. Truth be told, I've never listened to this album at all, but the offer to be "the first to review this product" was too darn tempting to pass up. To make up for my insolence, I gave it a generous rating of 5 stars, which isn't only the best rating available, it's a universal symbol of high quality. You know, like a 5 star restaurant or a 5 star hotel. I think DJ Rupture would be pleased. So in conclusion, i reccommend listing to music of all sorts, maybe even including this record, if you'd like! BBASS 4 PREZ!
