"Queen of Sex and Soul" Millie Jackson may well be one of the most underrated female singers in R&B. Because so much emphasis has been put on the raunchy, X-rated material that made her a mainstay among a staunchly loyal, mostly African American audience throughout the '70s, this Georgia-born sister is seldom cited as a key player in the vocal stakes. Fortunately, this first-ever two-CD retrospective of Jackson's work for New York-based Spring Records includes plenty of good old-fashioned Southern soul singing alongside the famous raps and monologues that made albums like 1974's Caught Up, 1975's Still Caught Up, and 1977's Feelin' Bitchy such bestsellers for the truth-tellin' Jackson. Hit singles like her first chart outing, the socially conscious "Child of God (It's Hard to Believe)" and her biggest, "Hurts So Good," are balanced with mainstays of her mid-'70s repertoire like "The Rap" and "If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Want to Be Right)" and humor-filled ditties like "Go Out and Get Some (Get It Out'cha System)" and the hilarious "Phuck U Symphony." Long before there was a Lil' Kim, there was Millie Jackson, and while mainstream pop audiences never quite caught the fire, this excellent compilation offers evidence of her stature as a workaday, earthy, one-of-a-kind urban diva. --David Nathan

5 out of 5 stars Real and to the point........2007-05-03

Before Lil Kim, Foxy Brown and Missy Elliot, there was Millie Jackson. She was actually rapping before all of those ladies i just mentioned. Except one thing, Millie could sing along with talking trash. I really love hearing this lady perform. She's as real as real can get far as talking about relationships between men and women. This is a sho nuff must have to go in your archives. You won't find a better collaboration of songs by this soulful artist.

5 out of 5 stars Packaging & Content: Rhino does it right this time!.......2005-02-23

Sure, there are a few songs that were left out ("Put Something Down On It") and some others that should have been left out ("I'm Through Trying to Prove My Love to You"); but this is a great collection of Millie's songs. The packaging is great, too: the booklet includes an essay, complete track information, and a discography. There is only one track ("Symphony") from her live albums and nothing from her "Just a Lil' Bit Country" album, but otherwise this is a good representation of her 1972-1983 Spring records career.

4 out of 5 stars unrestricted.... is the word........2003-04-24

This is the best compilation of Millie's work so far. Totally old school, blues, and deep rhythm and blues. She's got it all, and if you buy this CD, your'e sure to hear it all. Gangsta rap aint got nothin' on this woman. She lets it all hang out.

5 out of 5 stars millie tells it like it is.......2003-01-10

I miss blues singers like millie you think lil kim, and trina are explicit they took notes from millie here she talks about all kinds of things even oral sex, and how young girls fall for older men, millie gets deep and personal can you handle this.

4 out of 5 stars Sounds different this time around.......2000-01-22

While you might expect Millie Jackson's work to sound very dated this long after release, I found almost the opposite to be true. Yes, there is a decidedly 70's feel to many cuts here - a vibe that generally works to her advantage. But material that was tinted by "raciness" at the time of its release feels very tame by contemporary standards and it turns out that Jackson's infamous salaciousness was NOT the only appeal; most of these songs stand up on their own even without controversy or scandal to sell them. What's more, the collection has been very well selected and one realizes for perhaps the first time how varied her output was and how versatile a singer she could be. (Since most of her individual albums were heavily "themed," this versatility has never really been showcased before.) Yes, she frequently liked to play the role of the shameless "other woman" and yes, she sounds a lot like Gladys Knight. But she also has a distinctive style and makes some very interesting choices. She's as risky as she is risque.

The collection also steps carefully through her '80s material, which degenerated over time into bad self-parody. Some will no doubt consider this too much Millie, or be put off by the of-their-era "raps" and arrangements in several cuts here. But overall, this is an enjoyable, illuminating, and certainly definitive career retrospective.

My favourites are "We Ready", "The Intro featuring Millie Jackson & Twista, "What Cha Like", "That's What I'm Lookin'For", "What's On Ya Mind", "Running Out of Time" feat. Kelly Price, etc. It may not be the best Hardcore Rap album but it is far from terrible. If you enjoy Hardcore Rap, check this album out.

2 out of 5 stars 2.5 Stars.......2005-01-16

Unrestricted is Da Brat at her best. She improves lyrically and shows a different side of herself. Still she does not impress me, she still could do alot better considering she has one of the best flows in female emcee history. NOT RECOMMENDED.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM OF BRAT.......2004-10-19

This is her best album to date. This album has mad flows and stunning collabs, even Millie Jackson. This is hot and a must must have. Funkdafied has nothing on this album.

1 out of 5 stars Let The Evidence Speak For Itself.......2004-10-10

The fact that you can get a copy of this CD on Amazon.com for only 84 cents should speak volumes. Da Brat hasn't dropped a hot album since Anuthatantrum.

4 out of 5 stars Da brat's last good album(sigh).......2006-11-29

Standout tracks: INTRO, WE READY, WHAT CHU LIKE, F*** YOU, BACK UP, HANDS IN THE AIR(crazy match up with Mystikal), RUNNIN OUT OF TIME(the only jilted female song I can stand), ALL MY B*****S and CHITOWN. Filler: Thats what im looking for(this dull single is a turn off), Whats on your mind(ZZZZZZZZZZZZ stop pinching me Im up!), High come down(bad weed song, makes you want to quit smoking actually)and Pink Lemonade(ZZZZZzzzzzz will you stop pinching me Im up!). Bottom Line: Da Brat's third album Unrestricted is not the bad album that alot of these reviewers make it seem. As a matter of fact this album has enough joints(Hands in the air, Chitown, Runnin out of time, Back Up etc), to give it strong replay value. Even though songs like High come down, Pink Lemonade and that sleep inducing first single Thats what Im looking for bring this album down a star the songs mentioned as standout tracks make this album worth getting. Her fourth album is bootycrack this album smokes that one anyday.

4 out of 5 stars Da Brat's Album is Tight!.......2000-06-23

When I bought Da Brat's album, I thought it was great. The beats were great. I especially like the songs "That's What I'm Lookin' For", "What'chu Like", and "Pink Lemonade." I hope Da Brat keeps up the great work she is doing now, for the future.

5 out of 5 stars Da Brat at her best.......2000-06-19

Without a doubt, this is the best effort that Da Brat has ever made. I would really like to know the team that Da Brat worked with becuase they totally re-invented her music for the better. Her beats are no longer boring and monotonous as opposed to her other cd's. They all have an original R&B beat with swaavy rap lyrics and tunes! She also succesfully collaborated with really great artist like Kelly Price, Ja Rule and Tyrese (excellent choices).Bravo da brat. You're contributing to the changing face of rap music. Well done and keep up the work. Below are my reviews of the entire album.

1. We Ready - (featuring JD/Lil Jon)- a bit annoying but it's aight.

2. What'chu Like - (featuring Tyrese)- really tight song but the r&b beat is not original (Montell Jordon's beat)

3. F**k You- a bit to explicit. I don't like it at all

4. Back Up - (featuring Ja Rule)- how could you not love this song. Ja Rule really spice it up!

5. Runnin' Out Of Time - (featuring Kelly Price)- favourite song on this cd...the pace is fast and Kelly just adds her natural flavour.

6. That's What I'm Looking For- can be monotonous but this song is really really tight! Second favourite song on this CD

7. Breeve On Em - (featuring 22)- not to fascinating but it would pass

8. What's On Your Mind - (featuring 22/La Tocha Scott/Trey Lorenz)- fairly well composed and a somewhat even share of singing/rapping

9. Pink Lemonade - (featuring Debra Killings)- interesting but not to appealling

10. Chi Town - lyrically sweet and enticing. Sweet flavour and mixing

11. Heartbreaker - (remix, featuring Mariah Carey/Missy Elliott)- the only good part in this song is Da brat's rapping (Missy could pass). Without Da Brat this song would have bombed.

In all honesty this album has it's flaws (some of the beats sound the same and one or two songs ( )) but it's worth the buy and certainly the listen!
