It's certainly not news anymore that soundtracks have a life of their own, far independent of their cinematic tie-in. In fact, it's highly likely that fewer than half of the songs on this soundtrack appear in the movie; after all, there needs to be some time for dialogue and plot. Nevertheless, these compilations--let's call them what they are--serve a vital purpose, since, with the exception of prog rock, singles are more important than albums, and a good collection of singles beats a few good songs and a smattering of filler by a single artist. However, what can be said about a handful of good singles sprinkled amid indistinct and mediocre tracks from a variety of high-profile artists? That's the problem on the Rush Hour soundtrack. Dru Hill, Jay-Z, Ja Rule, Too Short, and the duo of Snoop Dogg and Slick Rick are the few highlights in the 70 minutes of music here, while Montell Jordan, Wu-Tang, Jon B, and others mail it in. I guess that's why they make CD players programmable and sell them with remotes. --Martin Johnson

Vibe
...Ja Rule and Amil make stellar guest appearances on Jay-Z's bouncy, antigoldigger/Broke Willie anthem "Can I Get A..." Also, Montell Jordan's and Monifah's sensual vocals blend perfectly on the intimate, sexy "If I Die Tonight."

4 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2004-07-06

Def Jam's "Rush Hour Soundtrack" is an almost perfect soundtrack album. It has a skit every now and then, that was tooken from the movie. The song by Too Short is amazing, and Can I Get A? buy Jay-Z is also good. It also has a song from Westcoast gangster rappers Daz Dillinger & Big Tray Dee. I gave it a 4 star all because of the first 2 songs. EVERY other song on this album is awesome, a hip hop masterpeice.

4 out of 5 stars Good effort.......2001-05-19

First off, this isn't really focused on the movie. As you can see from the title (Def Jam's Rush Hour Soundtrack) this is mainly an excuse to get a compilation of Def Jam artists out there. Although the skits are from the movie, and Can I Get A was used in one scene, everything else is basically new. So anyways, onto my review. There is nothing unique or special about these songs, but they are enjoyable. The album opens up with the "Skit" Never Touch A Black Mans Radio from the movie. Anybody who has seen the movie should know what scene all of these skits are from, as they are all from major parts in the movie. The CD then goes into the trio of three singles from the album: the mediocre How Deep Is Your Love performed by Dru Hill, the unimaginably boring Faded Pictures by Case and Joe, and the runaway jamming hit Can I Get A . . . by Jay-Z, Amil and Ja Rule which is easily the best song on here. Wu Tang has their song And You Don't Stop, which is pretty good but could have been better. Then Ja Rule has the angry, in your face, almost too much Bitch Betta Have My Money. Some of these songs will make you wonder what rap and hip-hop have come to, but wait. Two of the most awesome songs are coming up. Slick Rick's Impress The Kid is in a league of it's own, and the Montell Jordan/Monifah collaboration If I Die Tonight is sexy and intimate as hell. Everybodies favorite hottie Jon B. delivers well with his song Glad That We Loved, which is also

pretty good. After that, none of the tracks beside the movie snippets are really good. I'd buy this if you like the artists mentioned here, or you want to buy a soundtrack with hip-hop and R&B music. Fans of the movie might like this, but as the biggest song in the movie, War by Edwin Starr, is not included, beware before you buy it.

2 out of 5 stars Something's Missing Here.......2000-10-09

Rush Hour is a great movie! The Soundtrack however is something I could do without! The biggest song in the movie is Edwin Starr's "War." Not only is it played countless times, but it is even referred to by Chris Tucker in the dancing scene. But for some reason it did not make it to the soundtrack! This is unfortunate because had it been on the soundtrack...it would've easily been the best song on this CD! True there are one or two decent pieces on here...but if you're in it for a song or two, resort to Napster!

5 out of 5 stars big pun.......2000-05-10

a great soundtrack! the terror squad song is the best r.i.p. big pun u had dope lyrics

1 out of 5 stars a sountrack must have the songs of the films.......2000-03-05

i found this movie great, of course, i'm a chan fan. i also like some songs and music of the film so i decide to buy this album. the surprise is that i don't found a lot of songs, the worst thing is that the songs that appear don't reflect the movie feeling. what's that of def jam? always the same, a poor hiphop, without strong, without heart, always the same. there are many songs or just one very long? i hate this cd, this is not a sountrack is another bad-defjam-album. SOUNDTRACK, music of a movie! if you like the music of the movie connect your taperecorder to your vhs and just record the sound, believe me.

Christine is an amazing artist, performer, and person. I listen to her CDs over and over. She understands women so deeply. You will be thrilled with her beautiful music.

5 out of 5 stars what more could you ask for?.......1998-10-05

A fabulous cd by a fabulous artist. Christine Kane's talent is unquestionable. "This Time Last Year" showcases her phenomenal voice and guitar. Touching, ligthearted, intense, sexy, and funny, this cd is sure to work its way into your stash of favorites!!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing music, amazing lyrics.......1998-05-05

I honestly believe (and earnestly hope) that Christine Kane is an up-and-comer whose name everyone will know very soon. Her voice, her guitar playing (and that of fellow guitarist Richard Birt), her sheer ability to capture incredible emotion into every song, have caused reviewers to compare her to the Indigos, Shawn Colvin, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. And she's at least as talented as any of these. This album, though somewhat spartan in arrangement, features some truly great songs and while more orchestration would be fine, it's completely unneeded. They're songs you feel completely comfortable in from the first time your hear them, like your favorite chair. Ms. Kane's ability to understand human emotion and her capacity for what Tom Robbins calls "joy in spite of everything" make her albums indispensable for anyone even remotely interested in the best of the modern acoustic world.

Rush Hour 2's mixed bag of prefab sounds seems more like a corporate merger than an artistic effort. The concept: Raid Def Jam's stable of battle-scarred veterans (LL, Scarface) and next-up's (Musiq, Christina Milian), add appearances by some genuinely hot names (Snoop, Jill Scott), throw in a couple of outside-the-genre celebrities (Japanese superstar Hikaru Utada), and--as Nate Dogg croons on "Paper Trippin'"--get to stackin' cheese. Frenzied production can't overcome the overall low-energy vibe. Ludacris's filthy-but-funny "Area Codes" is fairly catchy, as is Meth's Biggie-referenced "Party & Bulls***." Macy Gray helps turn a Slick Rick classic into an interesting big band lullaby, while Jill Scott and Jazz's "Love Again" is little more than a postmodern Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway impersonation. LL's "Crazy Girl" is, hands down, the worst song he's ever done. But here's the good news: Keith Murray's still the most 'beautifullest' thing. Even Rockwilder's synth-based beat can't take the edge off of the Def Squadian's musical reentry. Welcome back, Keith. --Rebecca Levine

5 out of 5 stars Lost Song?.......2003-10-03

I have a question. In the movie there when ever Jackie Chan thinks Carter is dead and he is riding in his car there is a song playing. I was wondering what the name of that song was. E-mail me at gamzarme@aol.com . Anyones answer would be great!
Patrick Thomas
P.S. If you're wondering what the song's words are when it starts out it's:
"It seems like yesterday we used to rock the floor..."

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good: My girl Utada Hikaru iz OFF DA HOOK!.......2002-11-16

The Rush Hour 2 soundtrack is good. There are some real good songs on this album...and there are ones that don't even deserve to be heard. Songs such as "I'm Sorry", "No", "You Make Me Laugh", "Party And Bullsh*t" are all great. I can't help but nod my head to the beats and feel the music. But, like most CD's, It has it's downside. Tracks such as "How's It Gonna Be" and "Keep It Real" should not have made it onto the Album. Even "Area Codes" got played out.

But the one song that made me say "WOW!" was Utada Hikaru's "Blow My Whistle". This song is produced by The Neptunes and features Foxy Brown. Of course Foxy's raps are tight. But Hikaru's voice flows perfectly on this song. What is so amazing is that Hikaru generated the most discussion on the album, and she's virtually unknown in the U.S. That, to me, shows a bright future in Utada's U.S. career.

3.5 STARS

2 out of 5 stars deceiving!.......2002-03-30

ok, i haven't even heard this cd--i just watched the movie and the 2 of the songs that intrigued me (TUCKER's "don't stop..." and ST GERMAIN's "so flute") aren't on the soundtrack...ok, that happens sometimes but what irks me is the spate of recent soundtracks that say "music from and INSPIRED BY"--what is THAT about?? people wanna buy the cd's for songs they heard in the film, don't they? first there was the controversy of songs used in trailers not showing up in the film or on the cd, and now THIS! but the thing is, this particular cd doesn't even warn u that alot of these tunes have nothing to do with the movie! it's just stupid, if u ask me....i don't understand it....

4 out of 5 stars Hikki! Well, read me if you like Hikki..........2002-02-24

Yes, Hikaru Utada graces this album, and this will be the only basis of this review, unless you want me to give a negative score and read an 8 page essay on why I don't like most of the rest...

We now interrupt this review for a News Story...

Hikki, or rather the name she likes better in the America biz, Hikaru Utada, has signed a contract with Island Def Jam, a division of Universal Music Group. According to Japanese news sources, Hikaru will apparently record an album and it will be released nationwide.

Now back to the review...

Anyways, Hikaru Utada becomes the single Asian on this album and sings in English. Unfortunately, this song isn't quite as good as her Japanese works or even her rendition of "Fly Me To The Moon", which was featured on the "Wait & See ~Risk~" single. Her vocals seem faded and behind the music/rapping/background vocals unlike most of her Japanese work. Her vocals also seem weak, unassertive and uninspired as well. As far as I can tell, she didn't write the song either. Overall, this isn't one of the centerpieces of Hikaru's works and this album is not an essential buy for the Hikki fan. I, personally, can only hope that she follows her own path in her music writing, since her abilities are much better than it has been illustrated in this song...

It's easy to understand why Joe Lovano is the most admired tenor saxophonist under the age of 50 in jazz today. The 43-year-old Cleveland native has the thick, burnished tone of swing giants such as Ben Webster and Lester Young, yet he is completely comfortable with the open structures and radical harmonics of such members of the vanguard as David Murray and Bill Frisell. In Lovano's playing, you can hear the essential unity of the jazz tradition. Seldom has that unity been illustrated with as much lucidity or feeling as on Lovano's Rush Hour, a brilliant album which should expand his following from critics and fellow musicians to a much wider audience. Rush Hour is an unusual album, for nine of the 13 tracks were arranged and conducted by Pulitzer Prize-winning classical composer Gunther Schuller. For four ballads, including Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss," Schuller backs Lovano with a jazz combo and a string orchestra which thickens the atmosphere without sweetening it. For four more vigorous works--including two extended Schuller compositions plus a movement from the Charles Mingus "Epitaph" symphony which Schuller resurrected--the conductor backs the saxophonist with a brass, reed, and woodwind orchestra which features some dazzling clusters of low-pitched clarinets and high-pitched saxophones. Coleman's ballad "Kathline Gray" is arranged as a jazz chamber piece for soprano sax, cello, harp, guitar, bass, and drums with gorgeous results. Lovano completed the album with three of his own compositions plus Billy Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge;" on these he multi-tracked various reeds and drums himself and added some truly adventurous scat singing by his wife Judy Silvano. In its perfect pairing of a major jazz voice and an uncommonly imaginative orchestrator, Rush Hour reminds one of nothing so much as Miles Davis's collaborations with Gil Evans. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2001-05-23

When it comes to jazz cds my collection heavily favors the classic artists like Miles, Trane, Monk, and Mingus. But I would put this recording right up there with any of the heavyweights. Lovano's technique is superb and his range is impressive. Schuller's arrangements of some classic as well as original material is on a par with Gil Evans' collaborations with Miles. Particular favorites here are some of the ballads (Angel Eyes, a great Lovano tenor solo on Chelsea Bridge), and Schuller's "Lament for M" a poignant ode to his late wife. Superb.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic mix of tunes, great orchestrations.......2000-08-18

There is a great deal of variety on this album, with tunes from Monk, Mingus, Ellington, Coleman and a few standards and originals by Gunther Schuller and Lovano. The settings range from lush scoring for band and strings to Lovano alone. Gunther Schuller's "Rush Hour" is for me the highlight of this set- it's a frantic, 12-tone bop line with some fairly free solos. Also outstanding is the arrangement of Monk's "Crepuscule With Nellie" which manages to capture something of Monk's original quirkiness while still sounding new. This album has a lot to offer, and while some of the tracks are more accessible than others, all are worth repeated listenings.

5 out of 5 stars sexy, calming, energizing!.......2001-07-11

This is not "smooth jazz" in the nauseating sense made famous by certain clarinet players. This rocks. Groovin' baseline, hot licks, great variety of rhythm. This CD is my preferred favorite, many nights running, after fighting L.A. traffic all the way home. Sexy, calming, energizing, -- if someone could bottle what this CD does for me they would make a mint! (You gotta try it!)

5 out of 5 stars Savage is the classic example of one who loves what they do.......2001-02-11

I first heard his work on the Rocky Mtn. PBS production of "Colorado Landscapes." Not knowing who the guy was after a million times watching the video I decided I needed to search more into this master of the flute and sax.

Well, three CDs later "Rush Hour" is the best sampling of his range. Pieces like "Wind River," "Scenic Route," "Coral Princess" and "Innuendo" are absolutely worth listening to over and over again. This is not just smooth jazz but a group of songs that make you feel good. "Wind River" makes me think of floating down the Colorado River or driving through the canyons of Western Colorado, soulful and strong.

I highly recommend this CD even if you have never heard his music before. His music brings civility to your daily insanity.

5 out of 5 stars Rush Hour is as Good as Smooth Jazz Gets!.......2001-01-31

Bryan Savage has long been a great sax and flute player and a good composer. Now he has gone to the next level with Rush Hour... it's got great compositions, great playing, and great arrangements/production of the tunes. These are the kind of songs that you expect to be used in good movie scenes. The title cut smokes, and I predict will go high on the jazz charts. My favorite tracks are: Rush Hour (you can't sit still to this one), Scenic Route (dreamy), Wind River (sexy tango), Innuendo (haunting), and the remix of Coral Princess (3rd Force at its best). Bryan has included remakes as usual--this time excellent jazz versions of Sunny and My Cherie Amour. This is one great blend of smooth jazz numbers, and there's not one on the CD that you will want to skip.
