The Godfather saga may have its roots in pulp fiction, but the vision of director Francis Ford Coppola turned the story of Don Vito Corleone into an epic, multigenerational metaphor for modern American society and its place in the world. Coppola's musical choices were equally sage; aged Italian scoring legend Nino Rota's mournful solo trumpet theme ("Godfather Waltz") would become both a crucial, emotional link in all three films and an enduring modern icon on a par with the themes to Star Wars and Jaws. This compendium gathers key themes from the Godfather trilogy in modern rerecordings, by conductor Paul Bateman and the Prague Philharmonic, that are sonically pristine and faithful to the originals. Utilizing the rich musical heritage of his native Italy (and occasionally evoking memories of his great collaborations with Fellini), Rota's Godfather music would ultimately net him his only Oscar ®, for Godfather II. Carmine Coppola, the director's father, supplements Rota's work with music that's more distinctly ethnic, while the prelude from Italian classical composer Pietro Mascagani's masterful opera Cavalleria Rusticana becomes a crucial element in Godfather III, filling the void left by Rota's passing in 1979. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Noticeably different from the original soundtrack, but that doesn't make it any less fantastic........2006-11-10
However, when I got the CD in the mail, I was pleasantly surprised. While I did notice some differences (Tarantella sounds somewhat changed) between the Collection songs and the original analogs, they were not a change for worse. These tracks produced the same, if not greater emotional response than those from the films.
Listening to the whole soundtrack is a great experience from beginning to end for fans of the films and their music, and I absolutely praise the Prague Philharmonic orchestra, Crouch End Festival Chorus, and conductor Paul Bateman for their excellent transition of the original work into this 30th Anniversary collection.
If you like the music from the films, get this disc!

Do not confuse music you love with rendition you won't.......2003-11-11
Yes, the tunes are memorable and, right from the first movements, they evoke the ghosts of complex cinematic imagery that are so deeply ingrained in the mind of anyone who loves this film. But the magic is gone. You know it's not THE soundtrack, and you've heard the real thing so many times.
The truth is that if you had Pavarotti to sing classic songs of The Rolling Stones, you would be disappointed with the result - despite the fact that Luciano has a much better voice than Mick Jagger.
Those artists who recorded the original soundtrack 30 years ago in Hollywood - and who remembers their names today? - were probably not as accomplished as the Prague Philarmonic. But they created the real thing, and therefore this cover disc will forever be no more than nice background music. That's all I use it for.
Great Quality.......2003-07-15
I bought the regular Godfather 1 cd after this, and I've hardly touched it since I bought it. I think this Godfather Trilogy is far superior in audio quality and performance. I think it has more feeling then the originals.
Disappointing performance of classic Godfather music..........2003-01-09

Witty and Charming.......2000-08-15
This is Professor Pete- Peter Schickele introduces himself as well as P.D.Q.
1712 Overture- A takeoff of the 1812 overture of course, with snatches of some famous folktunes thrown in here and there.
Oedipus Tex- A parady of the Greek Myth Oedipus Rex where he murders his father who is the King. Oedipus Tex lives a life like his brother but in Texas style.
The next tracks are more comedy than exactly music like the WTWP station giving options over the phone about how you would like to hear a certain peice of music. Cooking French... is a woman cooking a French gourmet meal but flubbing up the entire time.
What I have already said pretty much sums it up. The rest of the tracks are equally hilarious and as witty as all the others. If you buy this CD you will not regret it no matter what type of music you listen to.

Customer Reviews:
I've found it, at last!.......2002-09-07
Along with "The Wurst of PDQ", this is the CD to buy.
Short, sweet and satisfyingly funny.......2000-10-29
The first item is the "Missa Hilarious," which purists are advised to avoid at all costs - if this weren't offered in the spirit of good clean fun, I am sure many would find it offensively blasphemous. Even so, I cannot help chortling at such moments as the "Gloria," in which the words aren't quite those that one would expect... The customary array of weird and wacky musical instruments required for P.D.Q. Bach's music is here as well, and puts the finishing touches on the comic effect.
"Echo Sonata, for two unfriendly groups of instruments" is equally amusing - and pokes fun at the trends of contemporary music making along the way whilst being short and digestible. Also digestible (just about!) are the Three Christmas Carols that end the programme: "Throw the Yule Log on, Uncle John" is perhaps a bit predictable, "O Little Town of Hackensack" doesn't work as well as it might have done (although that may have something to do with the tune employed- very different that the classic tune I'm used to as a British cathedral singer), and "Good King Kong looked out" is an absolute blast, with its tongue-twisting vocal sound effects, catchy rhythm and melody, and the surprise appearance of... well, that wouldn't be a surprise if I told you!
Also on the programme is one of Peter Schickele's own pastiche works: "Eine Kleine Nichtmusik," which is a justly famous and side-splitting re-composition of Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" with added woodwind and brass parts. Whether you laugh or scoff at this, it is undeniably a prime example of the fact that Peter Schickele really is an accomplished and learned musician- only someone with a deeply-honed musical background could pull off a spoof like this in such a way that it actually works.
Though it's just forty minutes long, this disc is very amusing. P.D.Q. Bach's portrait could not have been painted much better than this...
Mozart would have liked this one.......2000-07-07
(Of other P.D.Q.Bach offerings, my favourite is `Iphigenia in Brooklyn'.)

Customer Reviews:
A magnificent basso from a brilliant era.......2005-10-19
This is not a Julius Patzak cd, but a compact disk dedicated to Wilhelm HESCH (1860-1908) one of the most scintillating stars of the Mahler era [from 1895] at the Kaiserliche-Königliche Hofoper Wien (The Vienna Imperial and Royal Court Opera.)
Hesch had a large, majestic, "black" bass voice of imposing timbre and breadth, and excelled in a huge repertoire encompassing Mozart, Meyerbeerian Grand Opéra, Wagner, Verdi, German Komische works of the Martha and Barbier von Baghdad stripe and a variety of "modern" works by the likes of Smetana, Dvorak, Goldmark et al.
He died of a rare blood disease when only 48, but not before creating an impressive legacy of Grammophone & Typewriter disks made between 1903 and 1907. The large number of these testifies to his great popularity, the breadth of his repertory and the dizzying company he kept: all the leading lights of a particularly brilliant era of the Hofoper: Selma Kurtz, Franz Naval, Leo Slezak, Elsa Bland, Elise Elizza, Hermine Kittel, Leopold Demuth....
If you know basses like Gottlob Frick or Josef Greindl you know the type, but Hesch had a tonal vibrancy, a perfection of placement, a clarity of attack that bespeaks an earlier era. He remains, in a real sense, the unbeatable prototype. Listen to his LA JUIVE items (sung, like everything else here, in German) as emblematic of this very major singer from the forever lost (and deeply regretted) Austro-Hungarian Raum. Felix Austria!
Preiser's remastering of the increasingly rare originals is predictably superb.
Patzak, another Viennese Charmer!.......2005-10-14
Just sample the Goldsmith of Toledo aria (not Viennese - by Offenbach!). If that has no appeal for you, it is unlikely that the remainder of the music would be of interest either.
Julius Patzak although lacking that warmth of tone so much the property of Richard Tauber nevertheless runs his great colleague a near race for the position of most genial, winning tenor in presenting lovely, romantic, lilting melodies.
Only the age of the original recordings (late 1920s to early 1930s) and some slight harshness in the sound of the transfer precludes what otherwise would be a very well-deserved, 5 star rating.
