5 out of 5 stars Intelligent, airy and effin' awesome.......2003-01-04

Laying in bed and reading Breakfast at Tiffany's or sitting in your friend's cold duplex this album always satisfies. In this album the band quietly steps away from the subtle punk that can be heard on previous albums. I'd say that I enjoy this album more than Some Boots, as well as the other albums. You can't help but feel intellectual and lost with this cd in hearing distance. Definitely pick this one up, and listen to it everyday.

5 out of 5 stars an album you will never get bored of.......2001-08-20

This is one of these amazing albums which you discover over a couple of hearings and which grows on you to a point that you could never get bored of it. The tunes are all finely composed, with subtle complexity, allowing all instruments enough space to be heard and enjoyed. It has to be mentioned here that the album has the crispest, most delightful sound (the vintage (Leedy) drumkit, with that distinctive Gretsch Broadcaster snare sound, the perfect bass and guitar sound), due not only to the instruments themselves but also to some great sound engineering work. Being a long time Karate fan, and having listened to them since their first album, I must say that I am delighted to hear Karate evolve in such a way and that I strongly recommend giving this CD your full attention; and if you like it, work your way back to "The Bed Is In The Ocean", "In Place of Real Insight", and their first album "Karate".

4 out of 5 stars Quiet, Jazzy, Intense.......2001-05-23

If you've seen Karate live, especially in post 2000 shows, you'll have noticed that there seems to be a lot of improvization happening, even occasionally drifting into avant-garde. On several occasions, I have confronted them with this point after shows, and have found that all of these "improv" sections are actually all planned out, like a Rush concert.

I would assume the same for "Unsolved" on which almost every song has some sort of jazzy guitar solo by Geoff Farina. But bear in mind that this is not a new direction for Karate, it has simply been exploited far more on this album.

Generally, the songs are slower, some of them swing, there are a couple of true rockers ("Sever" is as impressive on album as it is live) but all in all less yelling and a more conversational tone to the lyrics. Confusingly, there are also some delay/feedback Thurston Moorish soundcapes in many of these songs, which are often coupled with some fancy drum work. And speaking of fancy drum work, check out the tension/release coda of the album, the 15 minute "This Day Next Year" which next to "Diazapam" from The Bed Is In The Ocean is one of my favorite Karate songs.

One last thing: The sounds on this album are all crisper than crisp, which goes against the scratchy indie-rock aesthetic. Another rumor I heard was that G. Farina, unsatisfied with his guitar sound both live and in studio, took some time off from recording and touring to study the mechanics and electronics of amplifiers, so that he could better fine-tune his sound. The result: Unsolved is perhaps the best mixed album I have ever heard, though some might hear it and claim it adds to this albums supposed wimpyness. Well, this album has its dull moments, but all and all it is an enthralling album.

5 out of 5 stars An unarmed assualt on the world of music..........2001-04-15

This could well turn out to be one of my favourite albums of all time. There's simply not one weak track on the whole album. The three of them seem to gel perfectly together. I'm not going to pigeonhole the style as I think it should be heard on it's own merits, regardless of which vogue of music you are into. This is as timeless as jazz, to which it most closely resembles. Oops! I still however, havn't got even close to understanding the lyrics yet, and I can add that for me anyway, it took many listenings to fully appreciate it overall. Every instrument seems to be playing independent of each other, and yet, in perfect harmony with the others. Please make this album known to others as it rightly deserves. I give this a rating only because i'm required to.., I think that the words should be read first, and not the rating.

5 out of 5 stars talented indie rock musicians..........2001-03-27

Karate is tight. Geoffs lyrics are awesome. Don't expect punk, this is jazzy rock, pretty mellow. The best way to describe it is like jazzy- Slint.

      5 out of 5 stars Better than..........2003-07-24

I came to GE after Clapton, Winwood, et al and he is so much better. The secret is that he is so consistent throughout the phases of his career that are sampled on this album. Even the likes of EC and Bowie have dimples on their pimples, but it seems that GE just keeps on doing the same great stuff over and over. And like Van Morrison, he is less mainstream and therefore seems to not be inflicted with superstar ego ambitions. A career to start to be appreciated...

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary and Essential.......2003-05-17

George Elliott who is now 50 years old continues to astonish. He is showing no signs of diminished power on "Unsolved Bliss-Teries" which is his third release. This somewhat underground and aloof figure who seems to rarely perform live, has single-handedly been able to challenge the prevailing understanding of the singer/songwriter model. Be prepared, this is not indie rock type music. It has nothing to do with Nico, Tori Amos, Cat Power, or the numerous other's. It will completely demand you rewire your prevailing thoughts on what not only a "new artist" is capable of, but any artist from now on. Actually, sin of sin's, he disregards even the most current understandings of what hipster thought is. It's words, beliefs and lifestyle he ignores all of it. George exists on his own terms.

Elliott's musical universe is a hall of mirrors that reflect direct expression. Removed from this world are notions of difference, such as beauty and ugliness. You are left floating in a musical galaxy of tempo and key-changes which seems to appear at random. his completely unique voice moans in a dream state of believable un-reality. He jumps from a Skip James-like falsetto to a grueling Om Kalsoum death throb in an instant. You are allowed here to create yourself in a way. The sign posts are removed but you don't feel lost. George Elliott holds your hand. This is very pure but "damaged" music. It is a strange but beautiful feeling. It is odd joyfulness.

Here you find a young man of unusual beauty decked out like a demi-god. Flowers are in his hair, glitter is in her eyes and he is surrounded by plastic jewels, candles and cardboard stars hanging by threads from the ceiling. Three professional cameras capture it all. A document of homemade performance by a teenager of chilling potential. He's happy, sad, he struggles, it's magical. The audience seems not to care. You will.

All hail this beautiful recording on the psychedelic/folk label Heliocentric!

4 out of 5 stars the BigTakeover review.......2002-08-03

...Simple, cerebral pop is a lost art, but these 26 two-minute songs have a thinking-man's quality. They're unadorned ditties built around acoustic guitar twilling, drums and bass mixed so low you'd barely notice them, and keyboard flourishes. (And is that not a kazoo we hear in the background of "Mystery Song," and a recorder on "Unbeknownst'?) But it's Elliott's overpronounced vocals that makes UNSOLVED something other than the umpteenth home-recorded demos by the unimaginative. His spare words are curious, his cadences abrupt and full of odd personality, and his bent reminds of the late `70s, when genuine eccentrics were drawn to make quirky, unusual music that was called new wave, but was really only one step removed from Dr Demento's show-from early Devo and Talking Heads to an army of lesser-known such as Tin Huey, Pere Ubu, R Stevie Moore, Nash the Slash, the Residents, Mutants, Klaus Nomi, Units, etc. (The only thing they had in common were their unusual approaches and smarts.) Extra points for folksy covers of BUNNY WAILER'S "Dance Rock" and GRAM PARSONS AND CHRIS HILLMAN'S FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS' classic "Sin City"...
