You'd think there wouldn't be much more to present by a songwriter who recorded three albums in his lifetime and has been dead since 1974. However, interest in Nick Drake's riveting music has grown enormously in the new millennium. Rarities were added to a number of posthumous collections, but with Family Tree his estate has brought forth an hour of music that predates his first album, Five Leaves Left. This set illuminates Drake's musical background, with his mother and sister appearing, and even Drake himself on clarinet for a Mozart trio. He covers traditional numbers as well as songs by Dylan, Blind Boy Fuller, and Jackson C. Frank. There are clear links to his own early compositions, including a couple early versions that appeared on his debut. Some of this has circulated on bootlegs over the years, but here assembled and sonically polished, it radiates with warmth. Recorded in casual circumstances, there are bits of chatter and laughter between songs, painting a picture of a happy, loving home scene. --David Greenberger

It's hard to listen to Nick Drake and not be reminded of those VW commercials where "Pink Moon" played while hipsters rode through the dark in their cabriolet. Nick Drake has the voice that you hear in your dreams at night. His new release, Family Tree, contains songs he recorded with his mother and family before having a record deal. Nick Drake masterfully fingers folk songs on his guitar and sometimes the piano. I have always admired his skill of making a few instruments sound like many, but what I found most impressive were the tracks where his mother and sister sang.

Music obviously ran in the Drake family, and it's difficult to listen to the CD without feeling that you are in the Drake living room yourself. Although I found Family Tree to be a fascinating look inside the Drake household, I would only recommend it for die hard Nick Drake fans, and would recommend newcomers to start with Bryter Layter or Pink Moon.

4 out of 5 stars Family Tree.......2007-07-26

If this is going to be your first Nick Drake album I recomend you buy insted Pink Moon.

This is a recopilation of Drake's first recordings in his home and a friend house, the quality is no the best but I guaranty that you forget about that becuse of his powerfull and full of soul voice, there are some tracks of his mother singing that gives you an idea to where he got his musical liking and also a duet of him and his sister

The packages is a soft one with a large booklet with writings of his sister and friends, it's rather moving and it also has some pictures of the family.

So if you want to know more about Nick Drake I recomend this album becuse it has, even then when he was starting, a lot of fealing and something that good voices of today fail to have and that's heart.

I am not an old person talking, I have 24 and I recomend this to you hopping that Drake's magic remains live for a long time, this is ageless.

4 out of 5 stars Come Into The Garden.......2007-07-14

If you're seeking this out, I don't have to tell you what a special & rare talent Nick Drake is. Suffice it to say, this one is for die-hard fans. Those seeking proper introduction should proceed directly to Way To Blue or Pink Moon.

One of the most prized recordings in my collection has long been the Nick Drake bootleg, Tamworth-In-Arden 1967/68. I usually avoid buying boots, but couldn't resist the plethora of completely unheard/unreleased songs. Now, most of that material has been lovingly compiled (with a few surprises, as well as omissions) & cleaned up considerably in terms of the sound quality. Half of the songs are written by Drake & half are rather obscure covers, including 3 songs by the legendary Jackson C. Frank. Fans of Drake will hardly be disappointed.

Among the self-penned selections, the real highlights are the haunting "Leaving Me Behind" and "Come Into The Garden". "Rain" and "Bird Flew By" reveal a talent that is nearly fully formed. "Strange Meeting II" & "Been Smoking Too Long" were included on the Fruit Tree box set appendix, Time Of No Reply. Both are welcome here. (According to the liner notes that collection is soon to be re-released).

More than likely, fans will not be as thrilled with the two songs, written & sung by Nick's mother, Molly. But to be frank, I like them both even if they are a bit jarring amidst the rest of the set. Its nice to hear where Nick got some of his talent from.

Lovingly compiled & with copious liner notes (Nick's sister, Gabrielle's are quite moving) this is certainly worth the price of admission for longtime & new found fans of this brilliant and truely unique artist.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome - as expected.......2006-07-18

While this new album is not as good as the other two, expect to hear more of M's awesome vocals, Mike's raw guitar, Gabe's fantastic drumming, and Jay's debut album with the band. The album does not seem to have as much drive and ambition as its predecessors, its still fun to rock out to.

3 out of 5 stars not as good as the older stuff.......2005-10-18

I usually don;t listen to a lot of punk rock. But a friend turned me on to Tsunami Bomb and we saw 'em live at this little dive bar near me. I became a fan, and i think that the lead singer Agent M is totally sweet.

Anyhow, i was excited as hell when I found this album. But as I listened to it, I didn't get into it as much. Something about the earlier ones was really catchy, sing along stuff..this album doesn;t have as much of that. It's still good, and I do really like the song 'Being Alright' (which is real positive), but the rest just felt less polished or structured to me. I still recommend it for punk fans, tho.

5 out of 5 stars better than "the ultimate escape"........2005-10-10

when I first heard "20 going on.." from "the ultimate escape", I knew I had to get to know this band. From that CD, there were some awesome songs in the vein of "20 going on..", but also a couple fillers. With the definitive act, TB has done away with the fillers and put out an album where you can listen to every song with skipping tracks. this band is very unique because their lead singer is a girl and she has a better vocal range than most of the guys in her genre. this is great stuff, and if you liked "the ultimate escape", you'll LOVE definitive act. they just keep getting better!

5 out of 5 stars mindblowing, a must for anyone with a pulse.......2005-08-21

I stumbled upon Tsunami bomb's first record "the ultimate escape" at a local music store last year, and after hearing 20 going on... (which left me floored), I bought the record. It was simply amazing. To make a better record than "the ultimate escape" seemed impossible to me, but a year later TB arrived with "Definitive act", which could almost be, dare I say, better? If you like music, you must hear Agent M's killer vocals combined with TB's signature dark melody. it's freakin' spine-chilling man! I can't imagine my life without tsunami bomb in it. I can't wait until they come to my town! Please, PLEASE find someway to get both of their records. they'll change your f**king life!!! Highly, HIGHLY advised for purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Transcending the Harder Elements of Rock.......2005-05-23

I know there are people out there that hate punk, dismissing it as childish and immature or simply dont put the effort into hearing some of the better bands instead of just generalizing the whole genre from the bands the media markets like to force down peoples eardrums. But as someone who loves every variety of music out there, to the uninitiated Tsunami Bomb is an excellent punk rock band with one of the best female vocalists I've heard this side of R&B, Gwen Stefani has nothing on her. When she does her solo accapella's and then right after comes a nice whiff of guitar and beatwork it will get you two looks everytime you're stopped at an intersection, first WTF then the second time around "hey thats pretty good, who is that?"

I was in the record store today and was getting pretty frustrated that they didnt have anything I was looking for but when I picked up this album 'The Definitive Act' used I thought I would give it a go since I loved their first cd 'The Enemy Within..' that I picked up way back. On my way to work, not even having the volume at very high, I was simply blown away by the first two songs, very addicting punk melodies. I came to find out nothing on this cd is horrible, there might be some subpar songs but they are certainly listenable and far from annoying. In my opinion 'A Lonely Chord' is the pick of the litter, coming off with a modern style beat of old school big city jazz infused with melodic guitar riffs and of course Agent M's ever so highlighting voice orchestrating it altogether. They have more of a poppish feel to their music on this then previous albums, not radio friendly just something thats more appealing to the ear then a good majority of the punk bands out there.

Normally I dont recommend music to others since everyone has such a pathetic undertaste for dismissing certain bands/groups/singers for not being their type of music. But I would think their style transcends, at the very least, all of the harder elements of rock. If you like Metal, Hard Rock, Punk Rock, or anything with a nice attitude to it I would definately recommend Tsunami Bomb to you.

4 out of 5 stars The tiltle say's it all.......2007-06-23

First i want to say this is definitley worth checking out and is by all means a very good thrash record. This is a 80's inspired thrash attack plain and simple. Sounding like both the bay area and german thrash of 80's. While it is not a revolutionary record it doesn't come off sounding completely generic and thrashes along decently enough. There are some great riffs on here and no bad ones. There is also some nice solos. The lyrics remind me of those off of kreators pleasure to kill and are definitley in that vein. The music gets the headbanging and the adrenaline rushing which is the mark of great thrash metal to me. They are not revolutianizing the wheel but playing the thrash from the 80's they enjoyed and influenced many band's. On a side note i am overjoyed by all these new band's playing classic thrash.

4 out of 5 stars good.......2007-07-18

i really like this band... the music on this cd is great. there are a few songs that could have been better, but its a good mix of music.

4 out of 5 stars Theyre better live.......2004-12-28

With the release of all the "radio friendly" "pop punk" crap, this band continues to stay underground. The best tracks by TB on this album to me is Russian Roulette, and Take the reins. And the best TB song ever I think is, Irish Boys. This cd is good, but its too bright, and peppy foy my grunge loving palate. I saw them live in September at Fitzgerald's and they were great. Their singer is so beautiful, she looks a tiny bit like Brody Dalle, and has a killer voice... But this album is alright.

3 out of 5 stars Soild music, a little monotonous.......2004-11-12

Don't get me wrong, these guys are great musicians and their music is tight and solid, and somewhat original. I do listen to the album periodically, however, as an overall album I find that the collection can get a bit fatiguing. The band needs to mix up tempo, key and and sound density a little bit, IMO. "Drone" is an adjective that comes to mind although some people don't mind that. I prefer to put selected songs on mix CDs where they can really punch up the mix.

5 out of 5 stars way better than i expected.......2004-10-08

I just happened to stumble across this band one day, and now i am completely in love with their music. I read about them in Alternative Press Magazine and heard they sounded similar to AFI, but with a more poppy sound. When i heard "Pop" that turned me off, but i decided to check it out anyway.
I was amazingly impressed by the outcome. I don't normally listen to punk music. I'm more of a fan of hardcore and metal, but this band is definitely worth listening to. Agent M's vocals were thorougly impressing and the guitar work was rather nice. The lyrics were fun and the music-extremely upbeat. They reminded of AFI's older stuff, and sounded somewhat like the Distillers, except more clean sounding vocals, and catchier sounding choruses. If you like fast, punky sounding music, you should buy this album. After all this is a REAL punk band, but they don't sound too much different from you average pop-punk band. However, they are way more original.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Hell........2004-08-29

I love Tsunami Bomb.
I just saw them live recently. If you want to get the full bomb experience, catch them whenever they're in your town. But before you do that, buy the CD. They're an awesome, awesome band. Agent M's voice is great, and the music is awesome and...whoa. Amazing live show. Whoa. I mean, WHOA. Buy this CD. Buy Invasion from Within. Buy tickets to their next show. If you don't your life is meaningless.

Kinetic Records presents 10 tracks hand-picked by the Tsunami trance organization, which has been around since 1996. While not actually mixed, there does seem to be some thought put into the overall flow. Starting on the oceanic tip with Zorba's "The Deep" and Chakra's "Deliverance" (complete with the noise of a depth sounder on methamphetaminic overdrive), the tone gets momentarily darker, with the ghostly breakdowns of I-Zen's "Voices" and Saiko-Pod's "Magnetic Force." The BPMs go skyward and the mood goes manic with Total Eclipse's "Psychedelic Terrorist." X-Dream's aptly titled "Aspirin" buzzes in for a very momentary breather until it too marches forward with military precision into Oforia's flanged-out "Special Offer." Yahel's "Reality," opening with some dub-ish goings-on, becomes a nice hands-in-the-air stormer. It's almost too bad that the record doesn't end there, as Infected Mushroom's "Symphonatic" and Morphem's "Hypnotone" seem to have too much and too little to say respectively. --Bob Michaels

5 out of 5 stars a trip from the ordinary.......2004-03-11

i picked up this cd with no expectations. i knew a song or 2 would be good, but when i popped it in my cd player and listened to the rest, it really was pretty awesome. it definitely has some unique tracks with catchy beats and funky sounds, but every track comes together and gives you a great mix of everything. yeah, there's some d&b, some goa, some stuff you can't even put in a category, but it's all good. "special offer" is one of the coolest songs i've ever heard. give it a whirl... i highly recommend

4 out of 5 stars A taste of the darker underground.......2003-04-12

In short: a wonderful collection of progressive trance tracks that demonstrate the breadth of possibilities. Obviously chosen with care, it only leaves one wondering why they tracks are not mixed together to form an even more cohesive and enjoyable experience. Think of this cd as an awesome buffett of darker electronica. Well worth the price of the admition if your interested go beyond the bubblegum poptronica of ATB, BT and Sasha. This is music for the electronic tribes.

5 out of 5 stars Tsunami.......2003-01-24

This CD is really awesome. The trakcs are short enough where you don't get ... off at a repetitive beat, but deep enough to lose yourself in. the beats are fantastic, as are the bass lines. I hadn't discovered what my subwooers really could do until i listened to this CD. It is amazing and I recommend it to anybody, especially for 8 bucks like they have it on amazon.com, i bought it new for 19 and it was still worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This! Jump off Oakie's bandwagon.......2001-10-05

This is one of those albums that you tend to not to notice, even after I bought it I only gave it a brief listen or two before it got tossed in with the other CD's I rarely listen to. I almost didint buy it when I did either, nothing about it hints at what a Awesome album it is.
In the last 5 years or so, Trance as a genre has evolved into what we hear today, in most cases it consists of a "intro", a "breakdown", a few "build up's", and a "big epic creshindo", set to a 4/4 measure around 130BPM. Though there are a notable few that producers that have expanded on that basic structure, but overall trance has killed itself trying to "Out Anthem" one another.
As a whole Tsunami seems a little off at first, there seems to be to much going on at first for trance, but its not edgy enough to be called "Hard House" or "Drum & Bass". I wasent sure what to think at first, I liked it, but wasent overly impressed.
But what a difference a good pair of headphones make. About five minutes later midway through track 2, I was zoning off when it hit me, This is what trance was supposed to be about. Most of the tracks are very tribal, (Tribal dose not = D&B) have heavy "Techno" underpinings blended with slick synth lines. Unlike a lot of Comp's. that feel slaped together, the quality of the tracks suprized me. X-Dream in paticular stands out above the rest, they are one of the older purveyors of hard trance.

5 out of 5 stars Agent M is hot.......2005-06-15

This cd rocks and i had the pleasure of meeting Agent M in 2001 when Tsunami Bomb was opening up for The Living End. I also saw them play at Gilman St. in 2000 and i bought this cd after that performance. The only thing that is missing is the song "Obligation" that doesn't really fit with this album but it rocks pretty hard. They have since drastically changed their sound which is ok but this album is their best.

4 out of 5 stars gooses review.......2005-06-13

This cd was pretty good. Although I feel cds with less than 10 songs shouldn't be released I bought it anyway. The first song on this cd is what you would expect from the artwork on the cd. I would have to say the best song on the cd is "not forever" because I heard another version of lemonade that was better than the one on this cd which left me somewhat dissapointed after getting this cd. having said that "lemonade" and "marionette" are the other songs on the cd which are of really good quality. People who really like this group will say they enjoy the invasion from within and no ones looking. Because most of the songs on the cd are at the very least acceptable I can see this cd selling well.

5 out of 5 stars My girlfriend got me into this band........2004-08-11

Let me first say that music like this normally isn't my thing. I pretty much just listen to melodic death metal. Well my girlfriend had this cd and everytime we took a drive she played the album. At first I was like what is this happy jumpy music. Than after a while this album stuck on me and I couldn't believe it. Their is just something about this band that I love. Anyways, out of all the punk bands that are out right now Tsunami Bomb are in a league of their own. I love Lemonade. If my friends catch me listening to this oh oh!!! LOL

5 out of 5 stars this cd is awesomeness.......2003-11-10

this CD is unbelievably addictive. it may only have 6 songs on it, but all 6 of them are crammed with awesome music. agent m has such a beautiful voice, and it really shines on this album.. the songs are catchy, and they easily get stuck in your head, but its a good thing. my favorite songs are "no ones looking", "lemonade", and the title track. the ultimate escape is also a really good album. get em both. tsunami bomb is rockin.

5 out of 5 stars It really is the bomb.......2003-09-30

After listening to this Cd, I dont know how to describe it. Its just that good. Agent M has one of the best voices I have ever heard(male or female). Everything on this disc is great. The guitar, vocals, and over all feel of the Cd makes it one of my favorites. Although it is only a 6, I can easily listen to all of them over and over and never get tired of them. Any fan of female fronted bands or just plain great punk bands will enjoy Tsunami Bomb's "The Invasion From Within".

When Willie calls, Austin responds. Tragedy brings out the best in this music-minded community, as some of the city's finest artists showed by joining forces with Willie Nelson in a concert to benefit the victims of South Asia's tsunami. With Patty Griffin's "Love Be Heard" and Nelson's rendition of "Living in the Promiseland" setting the idealistic tone, the performances range from the go-for-broke rock of Joe Ely and Alejandro Escovedo to the folkish country of Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis and the arty, indie pop of Spoon. "Travelin' Soldier" provides the best example of the communal spirit of Austin music, as that hit for the Dixie Chicks finds Natalie Maines harmonizing here with the song's composer Robison and his wife Willis. Maines provides vocal support for Griffin on "Mary," and Griffin teams with Nelson on a set-closing duet of "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground." With a generous selection of 18 tracks, the last third of the album features Nelson in fine form, his conversational phrasing and distinctive guitar even jazzier than usual. Though he's plainly the headliner, all of the performers rise to the occasion, to the delight of the responsive hometown crowd. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars What We Deserve- Willie Delivers.......2005-05-21

Willie Nelson is always ready to assist when there is someone in need. He gives back. When musician Michael Hall called "and when Willie said, `Count me in,' I knew we were off and running." The "Tsunami Relief Austin to South Asia" concert was held at the Austin Music Hall. Patty Griffin, Spoon, Joe Ely, Alejandro Escobedo, Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis and the Geezinslaws were among those who performed.
All the acts donated their talents. Proceeds of ticket sales for the concert at the 3,000-capacity Music Hall went to the American Red Cross, UNICEF and Doctors Without Borders.
As Willie Nelson said "There are a lot of people who would like to do something. We are glad to offer those people opportunities to help out in different ways."

Willie Nelson's Tsunami Relief Concert was recorded and this CD is pure Willie. He asked several of his good friends to play with him in Austin and they came through.

The best of the songs are by Willie. "Living In the Promised Land" sung by Willie is the best- his sweet gravelly voice comes through. He goes on to duet with Patty Griffin in "Angles Flying Too Close To The Ground".

My favorite is the moving tribute, "Traveling Soldiers" sung by Kelly Willis and her husband, Bruce Robison and Natalie Maines.
Kelly Willis sings a solo in "What I Deserve', and she is so apt at bringing out the slow, singular notes of this song. Bruce Robison raps up the best of his with "What Would Willie Say?" Bruce Robison is one of the better country singers and writers and his part of this CD is a real tribute to Willie Nelson. 18 songs on this CD, and none of these disappoint. The real winners are the Tsunami relief victims and the rest of the public who are fortunate to hear this CD. Highly Recommended. prisrob

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music for an Excellent Cause.......2005-04-25

I was fortunate enough to be at this concert, and it was truly awesome. I've been waiting ever since for the cd and dvd to be released, and I was not disappointed. The album has that vibrant quality only live albums seem to pull off. It's a great mix of the best of the Austin music scene, and generally just a feel good, rocking album. If you're not familiar with some of the artists on this cd, namely the Joe Ely Band, Bruce Robison, Kelly Willis, & Patty Griffith, and Alejandro Escovedo, this a good way to check them out, and help out a good cause.

5 out of 5 stars What The World Needs Now.......2002-01-22

It's a crime against art that this album may fall into the underground abyss, while heartless corporate, jock rock prospers like a cancer to the soul. For anyone still with a heart, purchase "The Heart's Tremolo". Also, while you're vibing with the album, try to drink good scotch and get caught up in a full-moon. Search for Beauty and Truth...it's there, if you look.

4 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous Waste of Time.......2000-02-15

Ah, those lazy, hazy days of indie-rock. Nary a band would evolve fromunder the floorboards of group homes from Chapel Hill to Olympia thatdidn't have SOMETHING important to say, or a manner about them so discreetly benign that anyone with a heart couldn't help but fall in love with them, and it was all for fun and not profit or politics... the rest all fell in line and I was hooked. The beautiful nonsense noise that hovered around this DC quartet was, at best, a delightful energy unequaled, a jazzy texture that spoke volumes about the times themselves: unrequited love, claustrophobic interpersonal relationships, growing up. Damn... whatever happened to passion for music like this?

Shot from a cannon in the endlessly blissful year 1994, when just about the only thing on my mind was how much time I'd waste that afternoon, I fell in love with this gem and its hazy insight. Not liking Jenny Toomey's voice would be refusing a scoop of blueberry ice cream at a July picnic; and the fury that comes with it here is genuine, anguished, brilliantly appropriate and gleefully exciting. They just don't make 'em like this anymore, and I'd put even the weakest cut (maybe the instrumental "Slaw") up against any thud-rock cornerstone of AlternaCulture today. Tsunami do a better job at it on this album, in a song called "Loud Is".)

What a revelation provided by this homegrown closet-studio outfit (actually, the thing was recorded & produced by Son Volt / Wilco mastermind Brian Paulson, although it bears no resemblance to that genre whatsoever). I'd like to have seen the look on my face the day I first heard "Kidding On the Square" and its fast delights, or "The Heart's Tremelo" with its harmonies from all over the place, or "Be Like That" with a chorus that proves more to me about indierock than any legacy wiped clean by the last three years of rap-rock rage.

And, with a little hindsight now, this is for all the reviewers of this album who nitpicked back in the day: Kristin Thompson CAN play. END
