An opus for the patient fan.......2007-07-17
With new lead singer, Derrick Lefevre, Steve Blaze and Company delivers 12 songs that satisfy the hungering soul that is the quintessential Lillian Axe fan. Many reviewers have commented on Lefevre's similarity to Ron Taylor (Axe's well-known lead singer, who took over the reigns from original vocalist Johnny Vines), but he truly stands on his own merits on this release. Coupled with crushing drums and a tight rhythm section ... this incarnation of Lillian is a force to be reckoned with.
My rating of 4 stars is based solely on the fact that three songs that have been released before on other CD's are on this disc (Become A Monster and Thirst from "Fields of Yesterday", and the instrumental "5" is from Blaze's solo CD.) With the lush backlog of unreleased demos that were written following Psychoschizophrenia ... i can only speculate on Blaze's reasoning on this. Many fans are quite familiar with many of the songs on this disc, with the demo versions of them having made the rounds on the trading circuit. That being said, it's good to finally hear these songs in all digital glory.
Waters Rising - The opening track is a new song, and i think Derrick truly makes this song his own. Though it could very well have found a home on "Psychoschizophrenia" ... this song has a heavy, catchy riff. 5/5
Antarctica - This very well could be the heaviest, and least Lillian Axe-ish tune on this disc. That is not to say that i don't like it ... it's a great tune. The lyrics are very cryptic, with (what i can guess) veiled references of faith. 4/5
Become a Monster - The first previously released song, re-recorded by Lefevre. This song simply didn't have to be on this album. Derrick does an amazing job on the vocals. 4/5
Quarantine - Steve tells of a sort of "germ phobia" from which he suffers, and this song is from that vantage point. A stellar performance from Eric, Sam and Ken on this one ... the music is just bigger than life on this one. 5/5
I Have to Die, Goodbye - A tale of love lost ... and of it's impending sadness. A song of love which has taken and yet not given back. Hauntingly stark in it's story, this song never fails to reach me. 5/5
Fear of Time - Don't we all fear death? While we all like to imagine that we are at peace with our Maker, and that we live up to ideals that we hope all decent people would espouse ... this song makes me reconsider so many bad choices. That clock never stops ticking, and we should waste no time in living life. 4.5/5
Until the End of the World - This song harkens back to "Fields of Yesterday", an album of older songs and demos that finally got to see the light of day. The chorus truly lets Lefevre show off his vocal abilities. 5/5
Fields of Yesterday - Though an album was released with this name, this song was not on it. Some have called this song Lillian Axe's "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "Stairway to Heaven" ... i tend to shy away from such comparisons. The song's dark, brooding opening gives way to 8 1/2 minutes of ecstasy. Lyrics speak of lamenting and loss, but coupled with the swelling score ... this song is the gem in the crown. The section which is chanted is ethereal and otherworldly. "Goodbye cruel world ..." 5/5
Thirst - Another song previously recorded by Ron Taylor. Since it's a real favorite of mine, it's hard to be objective here. I do find Lefevre's treatment excellent on this recording, though! The vocals are excellent! 4/5
The 2nd of May - A story of child abduction. Sadly enough, this song is so relevant to recent news of several abduction of young girls. I always envisioned lovers separated by an abduction by a jealous lover when listening to this song. Hey, anything is open to interpretation, eh? 5/5
Deep in the Black - An opening featuring what sounds like a pipe organ joined by dark, mournful vocals sets the stage for this epic tune. I find the vocals sound a bit flat and unfinished on this one. 4/5
"5" - An instrumental featuring, according to Blaze, up to 80 different guitar tracks. This is the third "previously released" song on this disc. That being said, I'm not much for instrumentals, but the musicianship displayed here is beyond amazing. 4.5/5
OK ... so my overall is 4/5 ... and that, again, is simply because of three previously released songs on this disc. Now, these three songs are superb ... the fact still "irks" me. Overall, this is a disc that you should not miss!

One of Previn's most successful recordings, still a stand-out in the field.......2006-07-16
One secret is taking slower than normal tempos, which gives the orchestra space to phrase with more imagination. You really do participate in a wordless drama of romance and magic, and thanks to EMI's sterling engineering, which highlights all the delicious detials of the LSO's playing, thrice-familiar music sounds new and engaging. That's the secret--Previn doesn't tkae a single bar for granted, so listeners old and new can immrese themselves in Mendelsoohn's immortal fairy whimsy. Even the scaling back to a smaller orchestral sound--far removed from the symphonic breadth of, say, Klemperer--makes us feel that we have traveled to a world of delicate enchantment. Highly recommended.
another solid release from EMI.......2006-02-17
A minor complaint: the main theme of the Overture is not played completely in unison.

A remarkable achievement.......2007-03-02
This struggle made her understand the techniques and challenges of the instrument in a way no prodigy could, and combined with her considerable gifts as a composer, she wrote what are the most idiomatic and practical studies for it. These are not violin pieces transcribed for the viola. They are written with its highly unique problems and assets in mind.
The first book, the "Twelve Caprices", were written "off the instrument", that is, in the composer's mind, without having the viola in her hands as she wrote them. Though dedicated to her husband Ludwig Stein, a fine amateur player, they were written for her own use, particularly as she was a very small woman, with tiny hands and short arms, playing a big instrument, and as a result, she had very specific needs.
The other two books were written after she began teaching the viola in earnest. Though she was a remarkable and sought-after chamber music coach, "I didn't teach the viola until my 50s," she said, "because I didn't understand it well enough!" They show a unique understanding of the problems young students face in tackling this most difficult of the violin family of instruments, in a musical and satisfying context. Each etude is short, concise and clear in form, with not a single superfluous note or gesture. They are written for modern players and students, without endless repetitions or redundancies.
The "Sonata Pastorale" was written in 1953 to put the techniques presented in the "Twelve Caprices" into a "performance" context. This work, like the three books of studies, is in a tonal but contemporary idiom, following the classical model of the sonata form and it provides great pleasure to the listener as well as to the performer.
Jeanne Mallow, the granddaughter of Lillian Fuchs, is one of today's most remarkable concert performers. She is like her grandmother in that she has her own strongly held musical convictions, grounded in knowledge and study, and guided by a finely honed artistic sense. She is not afraid to follow her musical convictions as far as they take her. Her playing is easy and musical, with a big profile, excellent intonation and a large, gorgeous tone. Her grandmother's playing was equally large in profile but had a certain grand stateliness, even a kind of gravity and reserve, which Ms. Mallow's does not. Her playing has a kind of spontaneous emotionality which is different from her grandmother's playing but utterly winning.
I had the privilege and pleasure of studying all of this music with the composer, laboring over it for five years under her watchful and encouraging eye (she was a truly great teacher), and hearing her play it in demonstration on her huge, 450-year-old Gaspar da Salo viola, the use of which Ms. Mallow has inherited and the instrument she plays in these recordings. She did not have the opportunity to study this music with her grandmother, so sometimes she interprets it in ways which are quite different from her grandmother's. Ms. Mallow is such a fine artist and approaches the work with such care and conviction that her own ideas, though different, are equally valid and convincing.
For me, on a personal level, hearing the sound of the Gaspar again, which I heard week in and week out for those five years, in the same music, here played by different hands, is a moving and wondrous experience.
Amazing.......2007-01-05
Who knew Lillian Fuchs was a composer, too?.......2006-08-17
I have very fond memories of the playing of Lillian Fuchs. She was a constant figure at the Aspen Music Festival for many years and indeed one year our condo was just above her studio, so we heard perhaps more of her playing (and that of her students) than we might otherwise have chosen. She was a tiny woman and how she managed to play that humongous viola of hers (and in tune, too!) was a bit of a mystery. I will never forget her playing Martinu's 'Madrigals' which had been written for her and her brother, violinist Joseph Fuchs.
All that said, I had no idea Miss Fuchs had composed any music, but here we have two CDs of solo viola music, most of it written for pedagogical reasons but perfectly acceptable as concert music. There are three collections of pieces, all in a very accessible tonal quasi-baroque style. In ascending order of difficulty they are Fifteen Characteristic Studies, Sixteen Fantasy Etudes, and Twelve Caprices. Also included is her unaccompanied 'Sonata Pastorale' for Viola. Like most collections of pedagogical studies, these works, most of them fairly brief (none lasts more than five minutes), require the player to master specific technical aspects of viola-playing. Yet, they are fascinating music qua music and I certainly had no difficulty maintaining my interest over two CDs' worth of music. None of the pieces is without interest but I particularly like 'Maestoso' from the Characteristic Etudes with its solemn opening double-stops leading to a bustling middle section, or the concluding Caprice, 'perpetuum mobile,' that has the violist scampering all over the fingerboard while the bow is going crazy; it is matched by the similar perpetuum mobile that concludes the Characteristic Studies. How the latter could be called, as it is by Mallow in her excellent notes, 'easy', is beyond me! There is much more than these to marvel at.
And the playing of Jeanne Mallow is magnificent; it, dare I say it, reminds me of that of her grandmother. There is impeccable tuning, clean articulation and a muscular deep velvety tone as well as unfailing musicality . This set helps to expand the unfortunately small repertoire of music written specifically for solo viola. It definitely will be of interest to violists, of course, but also for music lovers looking for something a little out of the ordinary.
Recommended.

Lillian kicks Axe..........2006-11-08
I've always felt Lillian Axe's songs had an anthemic feel to them and that comes across here. Stevie Blaze's guitar playing is as strong as ever and he drives the band throughout. Ron Taylor's vocals are simply put - awesome. He delivers on every level, from the ballads to the powerhouse anthems.
Song highlights include:
Disc 1; Misery Loves Company, All's Fair In Love + War, Deepfreeze, Pullin' The Rats Out, Ghost Of Winter and Fool's Paradise.
Disc 2; Crucified, Nobody Knows, Show A Little Love, Those Who Prey, Dream Of A Lifetime and True Believer.
The album has songs from each of the band's studio albums, so you get a sample throughout their career. As a longtime fan of the band I would suggest getting them all, but this is an excellent addition.

Get your hands on this one...you won't regret it.......2006-08-15
Where to begin. The songwriting is superb, light years ahead of many of the other bands that were popular in the late 80's/early 90's. The songs range from soulful ballads to light-hearted melodic rock to straight up rockers. The lyrics are meaningful but not sappy or over-the-top. Lots of great harmonies in the vocals. Tight guitars, great drumming that supports the bass, rythm, and vocals without overpowering them. Just all-around great musicianship.
My favorite tracks are True Believer, Body Double, Mercy, and She's My Salvation, but honestly, every track is the best track. And the songs are not dated at all. They still sound relevant today.
It's a crime this band wasn't the biggest band of the century. We gave up this music for gangsters, thugs, criminals, pimps, and lame emo/screamo pussies whining about what victims they are. Pathetic!
If you like melodic rock/metal and great songwriting you will absolutely love this one. Get it without delay!

A gem.......2007-04-29
This recording is beautifully done, with excellent work by leads Melanie Diener and David Rendall. Rendall's voice has an unusual "wobble" that took some getting used to, but after repeated hearings I now notice Francois' warmth and sincerity in Rendall's performance, and these more than compensate for any possible vocal flaw. The recorded sound is excellent throughout. This is a distinguished contribution towards righting the unjust neglect of Korngold's later operas.

A Rolls-Royce Bon Bon.......2002-12-27
Guileless Melody.......2002-06-16
Calling this work "operetta like" sells it short. It does have one brief scene of spoken dialogue (included in the booklet, but not in the recording), but the music is through-composed in a ripe late romantic idiom, tinged with the harmonic language of expressionism, but immediate it's appeal. The highlights are too numerous to catalogue, but Kathrin's prayer at the end of Act I "Mein Mann hat mich vermieden" ("My man has left me") is heartbreaking, with the music alone enought to bring tears to your eyes. And the opening to Act III is equally moving, with chiming church bells, and a melody that only Korngold could have written.
This was Korngold's last opera[...]. Korngold was planning a new opera at the time of his premature death in 1957. Imagine if he'd lived to finish it--a true romantic opera appearing in the mid 1960s! As much as I love Barber's "Antony and Cleopatra" (and, yes, I do like it very much), I'd guess Korngold's work would have blown it away. So, in my opinion, it's a sin to neglect what he did leave us. Please, opera companies...stage "Die Kathrin". Let it assume it's proper place in the reperatory.
Lovely melodic, almost operetta.......2002-05-21

A fitting memorial for a great artist.......2005-04-08
The remastering is quite well done, using good but aged (monophonic) vinyl copies of these early 1950s recordings as sources, rather than the original master tapes. As a result there is some LP surface noise and a bit of turntable rumble, and the music which was at the end of an LP side is more constricted in sound and frequency range, and somewhat more distorted, than that at the outer edge, a common flaw of the LP medium. But the sound overall is quite lstenable and Miss Fuchs' unique, rich tone, faultless intonation and extraordinary facility on her huge Gaspar da Salo viola are well-reproduced.
