4 out of 5 stars not PC but funny.......2006-11-20

Sam Kinison was one of a kind. A very funny comedian, good mimic with a unique style of his own. I find much of his stuff very amusing. He is good at pointing out hypocracy in our society and also sharing his pain about his life's dissapointments.

However, the material is not PC at all. There are jokes about aids, drunk driving etc... One has to not mind that kind of thing or over look it to appreciate the good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars I'm a nasty pope, I'M A NASTY POPE!!!!.......2005-11-17

I just got this CD a couple of day's ago, and since I am young (I am 21), there are some things that are VERY OFFENSIVE, but since I love this stuff, I love IT! Though this CD is old (it came out in 1986 during the AIDS crisis which I remember very well), Sam talks about marriage (There were times where I wanted to get out of the car and run: I HATE YOU, I JUST WANT TO LIVE) , his take on religion (Jesus was never married, a woman does not let you take off for three days and you come back and say "Oh I was dead" yeah if you have ever been married, that always work's, if Jesus was married, his cross would be in the yard and he would tell his disciples 'Look guys you better stay here' he goes in there and his wife is like: "Where you BEEN? Where are those 12 F**KING LOSER'S WHO WON'T GET A JOB?), his take on women (I'm going to use women like Shake n' Bake bags), drugs, drinking and driving are VERY CONTROVERSAL, but this CD does have his controversal AIDS material but if you are easily offensive, this is NOT THE CD FOR YOU, religious? Not for you. Sam was a God in comedy and he will be missed a lot...

5 out of 5 stars Filthy, sacrilegious, and brilliant!.......2005-09-13

This was Sam Kinison when he hit is peak. Robin Williams called him the "Eval Kenvial of comedy" and how right he was. Sam Kinison would push the envelope and then explode over it. With his take on failed relationships, Kinison would say out loud what we all want to say in those situations. He could also anticipate the shock of the audience. He knew that what he would say next would offend them but he also knew that they would laugh out loud despite the shock value.

Be warned though. His material on such issues as women, sex, drugs, homosexuality, AIDS, religion, Christianity and drunk driving will not go over well with everyone. (Having lost a cousin to AIDS and considering that I knew an entire family that was killed by a drunk driver, I certainly do not find myself laughing at those jokes.) Despite all of that, "Have You Seen Me Lately" shows Sam Kinison at his brilliant best. He was certainly offensive but few can deny his that he was a comic genius in his own right.

5 out of 5 stars There will never be another like him.......2005-07-25

Being used to all the political correctness that has run amok since the 80's, it would probably be shocking for folks in their teens and even early-20's to digest Sam Kinison's comedy: With every performance, he strove to break barriers, cross lines, and just did not care who he offended in the process.

Barriers and lines didn't exist in Kinison's world and his comedy reflects that. He was refreshing for his time and much of what he said then still rings true today.

I loved his take on religion and his constantly pointing out the blatant hypocrisy of tele-evangelists (oh, how he would have a field day in 2005!), even though he was a former Pentecostal preacher.

Sam was in a class all by himself. Many people like to group Andrew Dice Clay in with him but Kinison once said to Howard Stern that the Diceman was basically working his older material. I agree with that assessment. Clay was more into beyond raunchy humor (focusing on sex, sex, and more sex). Even though Kinison did his fair share of raunchiness, he also joked about many other topics as well.

I was only 16 when Sam died but I really miss that scream and his no holds barred attitude. I do get sad whenever I hear Anthrax's "I'm the Man" and hear that scream at the beginning and end of the song but Sam lives on through his comedy and his fans' love and appreciation of him.

5 out of 5 stars Have You Seen Me Lately?.......2005-07-07

A must own for the politically incorrect, Nothing is sacred in this
verbal assault on American culture, From Jerry Lewis to Jeasus. This CD is not for the easily offended, But for those brave enough to listen you will be rewarded with a true look into the twisted mind of a comic genius.

5 out of 5 stars She's got a lot to be vain about............2007-06-07

A sexy album cover may help a singer sell one album, but Carly has sold a LOT of albums..."Confessional" singers aren't to everybody's liking, but I think that this is one of her best. The voice is perfect, and, as for the jacket, may every girl look that good at 50. The music here is among her best, though, as I said, the "heart on sleeve" approach may a bit much for some. Thank goodness that "Better Not Tell Her" is not about me...my wife would never believe it was all innocent. Enjoy...this one is a winner.

4 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2007-03-23

I really enjoyed this album. I was in High School when my Mom got it and I pretty much stole it from her. I think the stories presented in the lyrics are something that women can relate to very much and though it is sort of the "adult contemporary/soft rock" that many folks may feel is a bit sappy, I think this is good music.

5 out of 5 stars Have You Seen Me Lately.......2007-01-14

This CD contains very romantic ballads. As usual, Carly has again put together a fantastic ensemble of music. A must to have.

1 out of 5 stars Not good.......2007-01-12

I did not like the music. The mood is too low and since I listen to the CD Amazon will only refund half of the purchase price. I will not buy music from them again.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favourites.......2006-05-22

By 1990 Carly Simon was a person with lots of exposure. 1987's "Coming Around Again" album was a big hit, and she won an Oscar in 1989 for the song "Let the River Run," a song used in the film "Working Girl" starring Melanie Griffith. In 1990 she released a collection of standards, titled "My Romance," and followed that album up with a new pop collection in the latter part of the year, titled "Have You Seen Me Lately." The album spawned a couple of hit singles, and featured some of Carly's strongest and most memorable material.

The first track and hit single was "Better Not Tell Her," a melancholy tune in which Simon is giving advice to a former lover to not share everything about her romance with him, presumably in hopes of saving his new relationship. It's a very catchy song and is currently one of my favourites. Following that is "Didn't I?," a piano-driven ballad in which Simon muses and asks questions about a failed relationship. The title track follows, being a little bit too easygoing for the subject matter. The song is basically about a woman living in a delusional state, and then asking the listener to not "wake me unless you love me." The singer is sort of commenting on her own ill emotional and social state in a moderately sarcastic way, but the music makes it sound like a day on the beach. It still manages to be an impressive song. (A bit of trivia--the music was featured in the 1990 Meryl Streep film "Postcards From the Edge.") Fourth on the album is a song that I never seem to tire of, the spiritual "Life is Eternal." Simon says the song's chorus is based on a Christian prayer she heard, while the verses seem to ponder what happens when we die. It's very touching, and instrumentally effective with the heavy drums towards the end as well as the layers of synthesized (?) strings. Rounding out side one is the powerful "Waiting at the Gate." Simon is singing to someone dear to her with a drug problem who is entering a rehab clinic, and does so in a mature and effective way. Too bad this song didn't get that much exposure compared to some of the others.

Side two starts off with "Happy Birthday," a somewhat cynical look at middle age and life afterwards. "Holding Me Tonight" is an easygoing serenade to a lover and was moderately successful on the Adult Contemporary charts, while "It's Not Like Him" is a bit too cliche for me. I also think it sounds a little too much like "Two Hot Girls" from the "Coming Around Again" album. "Don't Wrap It Up" is an uptempo number about an older woman being unafraid and hungry for love. Not one of my favourites, but I like how the narrator's age is not seen as a bad thing. It seems that most pop songs are sung from a younger perspective. "Fisherman's Song" features Judy Collins, and is a gentle, lullaby-ish waltz. The album ends on a strong note with "We Just Got Here," a song using summer's end as a metaphor for growing older. The song really does sound like summer is ending, and once again addresses one of the most prominent themes of the album--age and moving on. It's sad but hopeful at the same time, and doesn't sound like it would fit any other place but at the end of the album.

This album is a good example of one of the things that made Carly Simon so famous in the first place--solid songwriting. Not every song is a winner, but each does contain some kind of strength. This definitely ranks as one of my favourite Carly albums in her long discography.

The business folks at DG must have a soft spot for Christmas music, probably leftover goodwill from growing up with caroling in the snow. Certainly the German language nations seem to have excelled in producing a wealth of Christmas tunes, jingles, chorales, hymns, and rounds. This compliation is a two CD set of very good to great singers and performers who are quite to the manor born, or maybe I should say manger.
The easy way to decide if two hours of German Xmas gemutlichkeit is for you is simply to listen to the enormous selections on Amazon's sound sampler.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Just wish it all away.......2005-04-09

This was Ivy, as they were over ten years ago. The enchanting indiepop band debuted in 1994 with "Lately," a five-song EP that is still fresh today. Not a lot about their sound has changed, except that "Lately" is a bit more rock-tinged than their later efforts.

It opens with the bouncy, catchy "Wish It all Away," with Dominique Durand singing about someone who is too sensitive to deal with the nastier things in life. "Breathe the scent of a world gone sour/Turn your head as the last spring flower dies now/Close your eyes now/And wish it all away," she croons over the guitar melody.

What follows is just as good: the rippling "Twisting," the quicksilver rhythms of "I Hate December," the solid guitar pop of "Can't Even Fake It," and finally wrapping up with the mildly distorted Edwyn Collins ballad, "I Guess I'm Just A Little Too Sensitive," a song that emphasizes piano and guitar, lyricism and melody above catchiness.

Ivy is one of those bands where, as a start, you can check out any of their albums -- it doesn't really matter. While they do have an evolving sound, that sound is quite similar from one album to the next. It's anyone's guess how they have managed not to stagnate.

Guitar pop is the best description of Ivy's sound, with a bit of keyboard thrown in. "Lately" shows the band's versatility as well, with catchy pop that you can dance to alongside the ethereal ballads. Dominique Durand's vocals are the crowning touch -- very pretty, strong and flexible, although admittedly they don't get too much of a workout here.

"Lately" was an auspicious debut EP for Ivy, and is a good starting point for fans and newcomers alike. Lovely.

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this! The ultimate in pop music........2004-04-04

If you are familiar with Ivy from their great Long Distance and Apartment Life CDs, you won't want to be without this, their first EP. Every song here is a gem of sweet music with a sarcastic, ironic lyrical twist that keeps it from getting saccharine. This rocks a bit more than Long Distance. The recording is very good. It is a skillful, assured half-album at a nice half-album price. The perfect debut of a wonderful band, a harbinger of much pleasurable music that was (and we hope still is) to come. These are some of my favorite Ivy tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Kiri Proves she can "crossover".......2004-08-08

In "Heart to Heart" Kiri definitely proves that she can sing almost anything she chooses to. My personal favorite on this
one is probably "He Was Beautiful." I have had a very hard time
obtaining copies of this CD due to it being out of print. My
mother's friends all want copies since all the songs are basically love songs. Some say Malcolm was a poor choice for a
duet partner, however without him the lovely title song would never have been written or sung. That would have been a real loss because it tends to be a favorite. He wrote it for Kiri
as a part of their work together. So, I think if he had any weaknesses he made up for them by writing that song. It's a shame it isn't a choice people can listen to on this site. Actually, after writing this I went back and listened to the selections. They are all scrambled, so that the 1st one is Heart to Heart which isn't even on the possible list of songs to preview!! Overall, a lovely CD of beautiful and familiar songs sung very
well.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cross-over.......2001-08-28

Granted, this is not the best example of pop-style music. However, if you appreciate terrific singing and can't stand the yelling that pop is overwhelmed with, but still like the standard pop music, this is a great album. Kiri, while not the best interpreter, does a fine job with the music. She manages to cut out the operatic sound and deliver a decent pop sound, while still maitaining an integrity in her singing. The music is somewhat dated by now, but who cares? Definitely one to add to the Kiri collection.

4 out of 5 stars Romantic 'popular' songs by Kiri, particularly for women.......1999-04-18

Kiri's voice is so remarkable she can even sing 'country' (Pieces of April). Her timing and expression of a David Foster song (The Best of Me) would compete with Celine Dion anytime. The only weakness in the album (and it is considerable) is with her collaborator, Malcolm McNeill. However popular he may be 'at home', his voice is so overshadowed by hers that it is difficult to listen to them together. Fortunately, she does many 'solo', so the album is still great, especially if a 'remote' is handy. Unfortunately, it seems to be difficult, if not impossible, to obtain this CD now, so Kiri as a 'pop' singer will likely leave that stage to Celine or Barbra. I loved it though, so covet my rare copy.

Product Description

The timelessness of singer Jaye P. Morgan's artistry and appeal is propelled forward once again with the re-issue of Jaye P. Morgan Lately! The legendary entertainer delivers an ever-impressive selection of strong and sensuous musical backdrops with this recording. Originally produced in 1983, Lately! exemplifies most notably the singer's supreme and intuitive vocal style clear of distraction, and captures her trademark ability to blend pop, jazz, and cabaret. Each of the eight tracks is laced with her soulful and direct interpretation, ranging from a charging rendition of Every Breath You Take, pop flavored Fascinated and Cheatin' Me, to the breathtakingly-beautiful title track, Lately!. Morgan recalls Song On The Sand from the Broadway show La Cage Aux Folles so masterfully, and delivers the swinging rendition of That Old Feeling. Adept at going anyplace musically, Morgan returns to a more intimate mood with Be Gentle Tonight, and the dream state of Carousel Dreams, the latter not previously featured on the original LP release. Her inflections alter to capture each mood in a way that only a performer of her supreme league is capable of doing. Lately! is Jaye P. Morgan's most widely-appealing assemblage of classic tunes to date. Richly arranged and backed by a talented cast of musicians, she is in familiar territory with this sophisticated and striking repertoire of material. Having spent a lifetime as a performer, this lady always delights her audiences with her energetic and inventive performances. We are most fortunate to take a glimpse at her extraordinary musical offerings in this celebrated re-issue of Lately. - Mike Donaldson, Associate Producer, JAYE P. MORGAN LATELY!

5 out of 5 stars SUBLIME & CLASSIC VOCALS~BRAVO JAYE P. MORGAN!!!.......2007-05-15

Jaye P. Morgan is one of the finest singers in the music world over the past 50 years and should have been a household name as a Legendary Singer and not for "The Gong Show". Lucky to see Jaye P. in concert a number of times in the seventies and then again in the early nineties, there is nobody around to compare to this great and sublimely soulful singer who is a complete original and the great J.P. is peerless! Merv Griffin did whole ninety minute shows with this legendary lady and Merv always knew the best in great singers and performers and you could tell that he was enthralled with her talent and she really delivered on these shows when she sang but sadly didn't have any promotion on her great recordings from this period and her masterwork lp "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?" and the definitive on 45rpm only version of Leon Russell's "A Song For You" (both on Beverly Hills Records) are lost masterpieces that need to be released on compact disc. Thankfully this wonderful "Lately!" from the eighties is now out for everyone to savor and enjoy who really know how to appreciate a great singer in prime form and this is a wonderful diverse collection of songs that catch J.P. in riveting form ranging from torchy, soulful, fine and funky to soulfully sublime and nobody does it better! Listen how deep J.P. goes inside of the Stevie Wonder gem "Lately" and experience an artist who is capable of riveting emotional intensity..."Song Of The Sand" from "La Cage Aux Folles" is brilliant and mesmerizing while the thrilling big-band classic "That Old Feeling" is so loose and classic Jaye P. Morgan making it totally amazing that this great collection of tremendous and richly varied performances slipped through the cracks...little wonder the music industry is in the dismal shape it is in because it didn't build the business on real talent such as Jaye P. Morgan. Bravo J.P. and thank you for years of wonderful entertainment and we miss you!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great music from a great talent.......2005-11-23

Jaye P Morgan's music is just as fresh, flawless, and fabulous as when she was exploded on the music scene in the 1950s. She is an incredible talent and can sing any type of music with soul, spirit, and sensuality. She was hip, and one of Johnny Carson's favorite singers and guests throughout the 60s and 70s, and when you hear this CD, you will know why. She has class and is a real pro. This CD offers a pleasing and enjoyable mix of music, and shows that Jaye P can master any contemporary music melody and make it her own. "Cheatin Me" is sexy, and "Lately" is intimate and revealing. All tracks are great, and I highly recommend. She's right up there with the best - Lena Horne, Rosemary Clooney, and Cleo Lane. J.

5 out of 5 stars NO GONG FOR JAYE P. LATELY!.......2005-10-22

I guess everybody remembers Jaye P. Morgan from the Gong Show, how Chuck Barris used to introduce her by saying "And here she is, Jaye. P. Mor-goan!!!" But I remember she sang and had hit records long before the Barris show ever came along, and she has really got a great set of pipes. This CD has some of her best performances. She sings "Lately" better than the man who wrote it, ditto "Every Breath You Take," and her version of "Song On The Sand" brings tears to my eyes. "Carousel Dreams" is a knock-out heartbreaker too, and "That Old Feeling" is pure Morgan at the top of her game. Eight songs in all, but the way Miss Morgan sings them, you think there are fifty. In today's music world, everybody is a "singer." But rest assured, hardly any of those "singers" can sing like Jaye P. Morgan does. If you know who she is, you'll want this CD. But if you don't know who she is, meet Jaye P. Morgan on "Lately!" This is one CD you will play again and again. Believe me when I tell you, I do.

5 out of 5 stars Watch out Reggae ladies...Evette's Lately is wicked.......2005-08-10

I am a big fan of Marcia Griffiths and always looking out for good female singers in reggae which are usually very few. I heard Evette's cover of Nina Simone's "Baltimore" last month when I visited my brother in Miami and loved it. I have the Eight76 Retrorespeck CD already and had liked her cover of "Here I Am." The production is first class and so many songs are favorites like the title track "Lately," "Last Night" (my girlfriend's favorite too) and the cover of Fantasia's "Baby Mama." This album is breath of fresh air and I hope she comes to the NY area to perform these songs soon. Give this CD a try..you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome this new singer to the fold.......2005-08-10

It's about time that we have a young reggae songstress who looks like she can go the distance. In the great tradition of Marcia, Judy, JayCee Lodge, etc. Evette is the first new female singer in this century with a solid album. Because, like most of us girls in her generation, we grew up listening to a mix of reggae and american music on the radio in Jamaica it is only natural that there be a bit of soul in her music. But the album is definitely a REGGAE album with a full set of rocksteady, lover's rock, ska, and of course dancehall. My girl can really SING and the songs are catchy and easy to vibe with. I hope that this is just the beginning of many albums to come. It seems to be much harder for women in the reggae business that it is for men. It would be a shame if this one came in with such promise only to vanish the way that so many others (Nadine Sutherland and Diana King) seem to have done. My picks for the best songs are More and More, Lately, Baltimore, Here I Am Baby, Misleading, Without You, Last Night, and Pound For Pound

      Album Description

      "Ravishingly melodic!" -- Ani Difranco

Boots is an urban odyssey, seen through the eyes of a girl. Unlike Noe's previous records, in which she usually seemed to be singing as characters she had invented-- (a servant to a sorcerer, a doomed Cessna pilot, a dying transvestite...), Boots is strongly rooted in Noe's own experience as a woman. "In so many of my favorite stories," says Noe,"these troubled men dream of finding a woman to save them. You read stories like that and you're troubled, and you start dreaming of the same thing. Then one day you wake up and say, `Wait, I am the woman in those stories. But I'm troubled! So now who's going to save me?' I think that's where Boots begins."

Boots is a living room effort, born of 6 months of sonic experimentation and obsessive tinkering. Arrangements are lush, featuring electric guitars, violin, keyboards, old synths, drums, and many sounds that producer Todd Sickafoose and Venable can't remember how they made.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Climb Away.......2006-04-14

Yes, all these reviewers are correct. Noe Venable is a sunrise, a trail of rose petals, an aurora borealis, a garden. She has the beauty and simplicity of a child, but the wisdom of old age. Her songs are magic, loneliness, imagination, love, hope, and pain.

The exquisite combination of her stunning lyrics and haunting melodies make Ms. Venable one of the very greatest singer-songwriters I have ever heard. How many times can one fall in love?

      5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2004-03-08

Wow, is this ever a cool CD. Noe Venable has quite a unique voice, though someone I played this for thought it was Mazzy Star. I don't really see that, but I suppose if you're going to be compared to someone Hope Sandoval is not bad!
She gets us right out of the gate with title track, "Boots" which is a stunning song. It's got a great low drum beat, that's barely there, but so powerful. The eerie backing vocals are chill inducing
"Prettiness" makes great use of the light picking on the guitar and her voice floating over the top is sublime. She'd probably hate that I say the song is pretty, but it is. I love it when artists take a sound and then put words to it that are disparate. This is a lovely flowing song but the lyrics start out:
She utilizes this method quite frequently, actually. The music is gorgeous, the lyrics almost harsh, a beautiful combination.
Well, I won't go over every song because they're all gems.
If intelligent atmospheric "pop" is your cup o' tea pick this one up.

5 out of 5 stars Once in a long while.......2003-05-30

Once in a long while there is a singer, musician, poet, composer and actress that is able to pull it all together in a song. I saw Noe play live in a crowd of 50, and she gives it all away in her songs. Her intensity is bound to cross even through the most skeptical of us. And as if it was not enough, she is one of the best storytellers I have listened to in a long time. I am very happy I stumbled upon her music.
It is rare these days to meet musicians whose sole goal is to do music and to perform. And I can assure that Miss Venable's desire is so. Or else, why would she pour it out in a 50 people charity concert? We all left the place dizzy... The song boots will crack your heart open.

      5 out of 5 stars A Quiet Masterpiece.......2003-02-16

Every now and then, a CD comes around and leaves you breathless. "Boots" is one of those.

Noe Venable wants to take you on a journey, and once you start there's no turning back. The compositions are superb, and for old Noe fans, the remakes of a couple older tunes (like "Stolen Thing") will impress. The arrangements are simple on the surface, but the instrumentation has a rich, deep, feel that envelopes you (I highly recommend studio quality headphones for at least one listen). Alan Lin's violin work is moody and sly, and Todd Sickafoose has fun with just about any instrument he can get his hands on. In addition, some talented guests appear on "Boots" to fill in some extra notes.

Venable is a poetess, composer, singer, and actor -- and she makes it all come together in "Boots."

Oh, and lest we forget the singing. It's astonishing. A soaring and sure voice you won't soon forget. Even better is that, unlike so many of her peers, Noe Venable doesn't try to impress with vocal acrobatics or gimmicks. She just sings, and in a way that can send shivers up your spine, bring a tear to your eye, or a lump to your throat.

This is powerful stuff. Don't procrastinate: Buy it NOW.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2002-08-28

This powerhouse vocalist is astounding live. Though the recording can't quite match her live performance, her sirenlike voice is perfect for those quirky music moods when only something otherworldly will do.
