4 out of 5 stars Full Metal Jacket CD.......2007-07-25

My husband wanted music that was popular while he was in Vietnam and asked me to order this. I have not listened to it, but he seems pleased.

1 out of 5 stars BORING.......2006-02-15

I am yet to understand why this movie is compared to the likes of Platoon. There is no question which of the two is the better one. I was bored out of my mind after an hour. I turned it off and then when I had time to waste, I finished it. I am sorry I did. 2 Hours I will never get back. I know that evertone is different, but if you have not seen this movie and are thinking about viewing it, do so on a Sunday when you have NOTHING else to do. The only highlight was the Drill Instructor. He managed to crack a smile out me on occasion.

1 out of 5 stars Only One Good Track.........2002-10-14

The first one... The rest of the CD is movie instrumentals that are excellent for falling asleep to, but that's about it.

3 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2002-02-21

Abigail Mead, the composer of eight songs of this soundtrack, is actually Vivian Kubrick, daughter of Stanley Kubrick.
The disc has 15 tracks:

The first song is a hip-hop/techno mix of the cadences sung by Sgt Hartman in the first part of the movie, it is not a beautiful or good and I don't think it was necessary to include it.

The songs 2 to 7 are songs from the sixties and hear them during the movie creates a "mood" for the movie, for example, the song These Boots Are Made For Walking, by Nancy Sinatra and the scene in Vietnam which a prostitute is walking fits just perfectly and watch the movie without this song would have much less effect. Although they are not complex songs and most of the lyrics are foolish it's worth to have them in the score because they made a good part in the movie.

Song number 8 is the Marine's Hymn, a nice inclusion even thought it's not likely that someone would play this song very often at home.

The rest of the score are the instrumental themes composed by Abigail Mead, some of them are quiet and peaceful like Leonard, and others are more aggressive like Parris Island, with some nice stereo effects.

This is not the best score for a Stanley Kubrick movie and I suggest you to listen to it before you buy or you can have some bad surprises like not listening to Paint it Black, because it was not included or odd songs like Time Suspended. Actually I would suggest this soundtrack for Collectors, Kubrick fans or people with eclectic musical taste.

5 out of 5 stars Boot Camp scenes are hauntingly realistic.......2000-08-04

The best part of this movie is the beginning, when they show what a raw recruit goes through at Boot Camp. It brings back a lot of memories because it was so well done. Lee Ermey just is exactly what a DI is at Paris Island. All the nuances, the lingo, the discipline. The acting is all first rate. Also, the combat portrayals in Hue City showed the type of frustration that vets faced in Vietnam. Snipers were nightmares to deal with. By the time you snuffed 'em out, you lost three or four men. The other movie that, in my opinion is the best war movie ever made, is Hamburger Hill. That movie showed what real grunt life was like in the bush.

The fruit of an ever-blossoming musical friendship, O'Brien and Scott's first co-billed collaboration recalls classic outings by Ricky Skaggs and Tony Rice, or the O'Kanes. Handling all of the various stringed instruments, the two lean into assorted originals, classic Hank Williams (including a stunning a cappella "A House of Gold"), and hill-country traditionals as if looking to move mountains. O'Brien has become a household name for acoustic aficionados, but Scott's dirty tenor and clever songwriting should win him new fans. Lines such as "When I was a young boy, I learned to play the guitar / It was me and ol' Jimmy Beam down at the local bar / I lost my childhood but I earned me a trade / There ain't no easy way" help explain why Scott has graduated from sideman to full-fledged partner. For his part, O'Brien plays like a wizard and sings like one of the elect. Spare and old-timey as a woodshed, driving as a steam-powered train, Real Time is as real as folk music gets. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-07-13

This is one of the best CD's I own. I had bought it for my brother a few years ago and loved it so much that I had to buy one for myself. It is Darrell Scott and Tim O'Brien at their best. It is simple and straight forward and not overproduced. It's like you are sitting and listening to them singing live in a personal concert.

5 out of 5 stars Real Time...Real Music...Real Joy.......2007-03-11

I have been a fan of Tim O'Brien since his days with Hot Rize. This duet album with like-minded multi-instrumentalist Darrell Scott only reaffirms my opinion of O'Brien as one of the greatest folk artists performing today. While Scott may not be a household name (he appeared on both of O'Brien's two solo Howdy Skies outtings: 1999's "The Crossing" and 2001's "Two Journeys"), he complements O'Brien nicely playing mandolin, banjo and guitar. O'Brien plays mandola, mandolin, guitar, bouzouki and banjo. The two share lead vocals on the Hank Williams tune "Weary Blues from Waiting"; otherwise, they alternate between lead and harmony vocals, including a lovely acapella reading of Hank Williams' "A House of Gold." The rest of album consists of O'Brien and Scott originals, along with two traditional tunes ("Little Sadie" and "Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning"). The album closes with the playful "The Second Mouse" including kazoo, toy trombone, slide whistle, harmonica and toy guitar accompaniment--it's a hoot! The album title is explained in the liner notes: "We sat across from each other and played these songs in real time in Darrell's living room." Real time. Real Music. Real Joy. [Running Time - 51:04] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars One of my All-Time Favorites.......2006-12-04

I enjoy all genres of music, and this CD ranks in my top 10 favorites. I too saw Scott and O'Brien play at the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Festival and agree that it was absolutely amazing. In fact, we went just to see these two perform, and were delighted when they joined each other on stage.

This is one CD I will always recommend to friends and coworkers. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent album.......2006-06-23

I own some of Tim O'briens work and some of Darrell Scott's work, and I enjoy this album more than either of them. The collection of songs, and the collaboration of these 2 musicians makes this the kind of album you can sit and listen to straight through...then listen again and again for years. As one of the other reviewers said, its hard to believe these were recorded in a living room. Unless you just can't stand banjos, guitars and mandolins, you'll enjoy this album.
The tunes are mostly what I'd describe as "lively". Some might fall into the "heartfelt" category as well.

5 out of 5 stars This is an incredible album........2005-11-15

I have long been a Tim O'Brien fan, but it was just this September that I was introduced to Darrell Scott at the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion. It was one of the few musical moments in my life that left me sitting in the audience with my mouth wide open. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon I heard Tim O'Brien and Darrell Scott play a number of the tunes from this album as they played together during their respective sets. It was, simply, magical.

Perhaps my favorite tune on this album is "With a Memory Like Mine." Scott told the story of his dad (also a songwriter) writing the lyrics to this tune back in the 60s when it seemed that some of the Scott boys might be drafted to fight in Vietnam. This is one powerful tune.

If you like great pickin' and great songwriting, this is an album for you. The chemistry between O'Brien and Scott is otherworldly - you have to hear it to believe it.

2 out of 5 stars redux.......2007-07-06

Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!

3 out of 5 stars Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20

I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.

This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.

2 out of 5 stars POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20

The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

I have heard many, many classical "mood" collections, and this is one of the best, with many surprise selections.
It is consistently restful and calming.
    I recommend it highly.

Ritter's literate, highly romantic brand of folk has gained him attention on both sides of the Atlantic. Hello Starling, his third album, sees him pushing the boat out further and trying to move beyond the evident influence of Bob Dylan. It doesn't always work: the up-tempo "Kathleen" and "Man Burning," with their swirling organs, clearly carry the mark of Zimmerman, as does the soft and heartfelt "You Don't Make It Easy Babe," a troubled ode to a troubling girl. But this doesn't necessarily matter. Ritter's vocal performances may lack the intensity and weight of Dylan or Leonard Cohen (an equally heavy influence, most evidently on the track "Wings"), but he has a charm and lightness of touch that will endear him to many. Beyond this, it's a real joy to hear a musician attempting ambitious narratives ("Wings," "Bone of Song") where many singer-songwriters cower cravenly behind impressionistic cut-up techniques or, worse still, spatter us with self-obsessed drivel. Perhaps a few albums on, Ritter will truly find his own voice and be considered a real find. --Dominic Wills

4 out of 5 stars Following in a grand tradition.......2005-07-27

Hello Starling is the third album by Josh Ritter, a singer-songwriter and guitarist originally from Moscow ID who has been steadily building support since his first self-released album in 1999, particularly in his native States and in Ireland, where he initially toured supporting the Frames. For this album, Dave Odlum from the Frames was enlisted as producer and the album was recorded over a fortnight in February 2002 in a converted dairy barn near Angers in France (also used by Dave Odlum for an EP with Gemma Hayes in 2001), and with Josh's touring band augmented by Dave Odlum helping out on guitar and mandolin.
As a teenager, Josh Ritter had been inspired by discovering Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash playing together on the Nashville Skyline album, and has also acknowledged Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen and Gillian Welch among his influences (there is a nod to Townes Van Zandt on this album's Kathleen, also the title of one of his songs). He studied American History through narrative music at college, spending six months in Scotland at the School of Scottish Folk Studies, and also made a study of American religious music, American Civil War songs and late 19th century popular ballads, parlour songs and cowboy songs.
Although he has found his own voice and a clear natural style it is clear from his stripped back approach and the meticulously recorded instruments that he has learned well and deeply from all these guiding legacies and adaptations. This is an album that has been built to last and leaves one keenly anticipating the next.

5 out of 5 stars Reminicent of Early Springsteen.......2005-03-19

Josh Ritter's amazing talent should not go unnoticed for long here in the states as he's such a rising star in Ireland/UK that it won't be long before everyone knows his name. Very reminincent of early Springsteen with his unperfect but endearing voice, his raw passion, and superb song writing this guy is going far!

I dare anyone to listen to "Kathleen" and not be humming before the end of the song and then replaying it to learn all the words. The song promises to stay in your head and heart long after you've listend to the CD!

One of the best singer/songwriters in a very long time! If you get a chance to see him perform live don't walk but RUN to stand in line to see him....you won't be sorry!

    4 out of 5 stars Hitcooper.com Review.......2004-09-28

This album is pure, raw folk music. Josh is an amazing poet with a simple, sweet voice. I guess he's huge over in Ireland/England... I'm sure he will soon be huge here in the US... I recommend jumping on his fan bandwagon now... And I noticed that Hitcooper.com chose him as one of their featured artists... Another proof that he's a true artist that's definitely worth listening to...

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, just stunning!.......2004-05-10

Josh Ritter has an amazing voice. These are my seperate opinions, with 10 the best, 0 the worst.

Bright Smile: 9. Maybe this should have been a little bit faster, but a perfect start to a beatiful fol rock CD.

Kathleen: 10. He hits a great high not, the prime of his voice. A real find.

You Don't Make It Easy Babe: 8. Not my kind of music, but still good.

Man Burning: 10,000. JOSH!!!! THIS ROCKS!!!!! WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SONG I CAN NOT SAY ENOUGH!!!!

The rest are 8's, with the exception of the Bad Actress and Bone of Song.

Thanks Josh! You really made music!

4 out of 5 stars This Is The Collection You Need!.......2006-04-22

WARNING!! Don't buy that hot mess of a CD titled 'Still Standing' from 2001! This is the collection for you. MOST of Full Force's greatest hits are on this CD, and that includes super rare extended versions of 'Alice I Want You Just For Me' & 'Unselfish Lover', which take me back to the good times of 1985.

The ONLY drawback with this collection is the failure to include Force's big hit from 1987...'Love Is For Suckers (Like Me & You)', and I just had to add this track to my remastered CD. This song is on the 'Guess Who's Coming To The Crib' CD, which also features the classic slow jam 'All In My Mind'. Even though this collection is missing a key song, 'Full Force's Greatest Hits' is still a worthy collection for old & new fans alike. Don't sleep on this CD..who knows how long it will be in print!

What more can I say. I loved Full Force in the late 1980's, and I still love them today. Their music was funky, soulful, yet fresh and they were definitely ahead of their time!!

Standout sensational songs include "Unselfish Lover" (someone has GOT to do a cover of this song, "All in My Mind", and "Please Stay".

5 out of 5 stars Finally, the wait is over.....,.......2001-12-29

The original hip-hop vocal band has unleashed a complete greatest hits package. They teased us with a few shorter versions of their best of on "Still Standing", but they came with it on this one. All the classics are here, from "Alice, I Want You Just For Me, Ain't My Type of Hype, to Unselfish Lover"..., but the unforgettable slow jams "All in My Mind", "4U:Full Force Mellow Medley" and the ever so sensuous "Kiss Those Lips", are here as well, all of which were missing from the "Still Standing" cd. They end the cd on a spiritual note with the "Man Upstairs" which was slept on back in the day which shows their early roots in the church. Overall this cd is da' Bomb, and one of the most complete greatest hits package I have ever heard..., This is a must have...., for true Full Force Fans

5 out of 5 stars As Always, Hilarious.......2007-05-03

This is so funny! Like all the Forbidden Broadway cds, its another knock-out. I feel like such a crazy person when I am in the car driving and I just burst out laughing. Its great and a must have for any Forbidden Broadway fan.

3 out of 5 stars Spoof Odessey worth the laughs!.......2002-04-14

I enjoyed "Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey." This recording has some truly genius material, and although these actors' impersonations of famous Broadway stars aren't as strong as they have been in the past, the CD has a lot to recommend it.

Particularly strong is Track 16, "Let's do an old fashioned show tune," featuring Elton John and Ethel Merman duking it out over AIDA, which Merman says is "putting everyone here through hell." Likewise, Track 15, "Let's Ruin Times Square Again," tickles my funny bone. Also wonderful are the satires of Beauty and the Beast, Angela Lansbury, and the Full Monty; Gerard Alessandrini's done a tremendous job with these! In addition, this CD's introductory song is much stronger than those on the previous volumes of Forbidden Broadway. It really sets the tone for the best parts of this recording.

Unfortunately, with a few notable exceptions, the first half of the CD is a bit thin, which is why I give this recording 3 out of 5 stars: Even though it entertains me, there's a lot I have to skip over. For example, the Liza Minelli spoof annoying (though, I admit, a little funny), and in the Music Man revival satire, their Robert Preston impersonator sounds *nothing* like the original. (In earlier recordings, the actors *did* sound like the people they claimed to be.)

The good news is that the CD has 30 tracks in all, so even though there are 13 that I dislike, I just love the rest... I do recommend it!

2 out of 5 stars better to be "Lost in Space".......2001-12-31

First and foremost, this CD is really for diehard fans of Forbidden Broadway, those of us who want the good, the bad and the ugly on the cd rack. I was extremely unimpressed with the latest offering.

While I agree with some of the other reviewers that there is some nice work, I don't know that Saturday Night Fiasco and Sondheim's Blues are sufficient to carry the rest of the tracks. Not much seems new or worse yet, important. Disney isn't new, nor is Les Miz. And while pointing out what is stale and pedestrian on Broadway was amusing on the last couple of releases, this Forbidden Broadway spoof clearly has joined the list of stale and pedestrian.

While there is some nice material on this disc, I really didn't laugh out loud, and that is why I have always bought these in the past.

If Alessandrini reduces the show to the same complaints of the same shows and then replaying lightly tweaked versions of past numbers, Trouble and Alan Cumming in Cabaret specifically, then he has himself is on the becoming a revival - and we know what he thinks of revivals.

The repeats might even be acceptable if there was something fresh in the perfomance, but both were done much better on their respective discs. I think Danny Gurwin is a great comedian, but he doesn't shine in either of these numbers. We also need a recording with no Ethel Merman or Liza numbers - give them a rest already. And why bring back Streisand with such a poor imitation? The earlier Barbara's were dead on vocal impressions as well as speech patterns. If you aren't going to improve on it, then don't drag it back out.

Alessandrini suggests that this is one of the best casts he has ever worked with. I don't know what he bases that on, but I beg to differ, either cast with Bryan Batt was significantly better, although they worked with fresh, clever material. Still, those recordings had verocious talent that brought Gerard's stinging wit to life for those of us who can't see every new production of FB.

Maybe it is time to go to off Broadway productions, or to the radio or the movies for some new ideas. Or else promise no references to the Gap, Disney, or Chorus Boys, (way over used on this recording), along with a Merman and Liza free season. Start from scratch. That might give us hope that Forbidden Broadway too might not be dead.

    3 out of 5 stars Stretched Thin.......2001-03-26

I just saw the stage production of Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey. I agree with the other reviewers who feel that Alessandrini is no longer at the top of his game. Perhaps he should lay off for a year or three and let Broadway present new things for him to lampoon - as it always will.

The opening sequence is forced and unfunny, and clearly in place only to batter the listener with the "2001" theme. Unlike a previous reviewer, I found the Judi Dench parody hysterical, though I question its accuracy.

The "Trouble" parody is, as it always was, incomplete and thin. My dear friend John Kenrick (...) did a better job with it - included the segments of the original song that GA left out, and in a funnier fashion. The Cole Porter parody is marginally amusing, but the Brian Mitchell/Marin Mazzie parody is dead on the mark, and VERY funny.

The parody of Cheryl Ladd remains in the show, although she's no longer in "Annie Get Your Gun" - Reba McIntyre is now in the role. Similarly, he stabs at Alan Cumming, who is no longer playing the Emcee. These numbers, while funny, lack punch. On the other hand, he once again skewers long time target Patti LuPone with an hysterical new parody of Being Alive. I suppose she's innately funnier, after all these years, than Alan Cumming, who is, after all, a relative newcomer.

The Rocky Horror parody is amusing, and the observation that sex has moved off 42nd Street and onto the Broadway stage is not without merit. The Beauty parody is amusing, and apt, but as has already been noted, GA has been clobbering us with the Disnification of Broadway for years now. I suppose he finds some glee in the fading success of this particular show.

I must say that while Gurwin is not the greatest singer, "Sondheim's Blues" is the most brilliant piece I've heard from Alessandrini in years. It's absolutely dead on. The friends I was with had never seen nor heard "Follies" and completely missed the point, but I was in stitches.

The "10 Years More" (which does not appear on this album, but remains in the show) has really begun to wear thin, especially with the closing this year of Cats and Miss Saigon. The Cameron Macintosh British mega-musicals are finally releasing their grip on Broadway, and this isn't as funny any more.

Broadway, despite the naysayers, will never die... and apparently, neither will Forbidden Broadway. I don't think it should - but I do think it needs a rest.

2 out of 5 stars Do the Math.......2001-03-15

Four CDs cover the first 20 Years of Forbidden Broadway, Gerard Alessandrini's viciously witty satire of New York Theatre. The last year has seen Three new CDs, FB "Cleans Up Its Act" "20th Anniversary Edition" and now "2001 a Spoof Odyssey". Do the math.

Alessandrini is running out of ideas, and is spreading the remaining ones too thin. . Sanitized Time Square - Been there. Disnified Broadway - Done that, and so many times. Asinine casting faux pas, plotless pointless set-monster musicals, and Ethel Merman and Liza. We've heard it all before - and last time, it was funnier.

Now normally when a writer (or director or actor) has truly entertained me on numerous occasions, I'll forgive the odd show that disappoints. This would be the case here except for two things: Alessandrini is in the vicious parody business - he's never spared anyone else Besides, if he's going to actually include couplets like: "If lyrics are no longer witty... Then I don't want to go " he's inviting the pans.

When you hear the AIDA lampoon, you'll be reminded of the dim bulb in Cyrano de Bergerac who taunts the hero with the brilliant witticism: Your nose is very large

Yes, there are a few true Forbidden Broadway tracks on Spoof Odyssey. Dame Judi Dench singing "Why can't Americans do theatre like the Brits?" (with apologies to My Fair Lady), I Hate Ben (with apologies to Kiss Me Kate) and about 1/3 of "Let's Ruin Time Square Again" (no apologies necessary to Rocky Horror which understands how easy it is for good parody to go bad). Oh yes, there is one absolutely true Forbidden Broadway track: TROUBLE - yes, the same Trouble from Volume 3 which was just re-released on the 20th Anniversary compilation - and it's back again with a more hackneyed Robert Preston impersonation and all of 4 words changed. Granted it's one of the better bits, more worthy of rerunning than say, referring to Miss Saigon as Viet-Numb, but oh, he reran that gag too

More folk than electronic (at least compared to Four Tet, etc.), this is all strummed and fingerpicked guitars with a little glitchy accent here or there, and occasional tape-loop voices from instructional records (reminiscent of The Books). The tranquil, mellow rural vibe here is all their own, though, with a Bert Jansch or Richard Thompson British folk influence that lends it a depth that other "folktronica" acts can't deliver. Lyrics are good, too, and actually an important part of the music vs. just another atmospheric element. If there's any criticism, it's a little uniform and some might find it too similar beginning to end, but I appreciate that they know they've got a mood they're trying to sustain throughout.
