For Run DMC--the band largely credited with merging rock and hip-hop--Crown Royal must seem something of a vindication. When they hit the skids a decade ago, the hip-hop community rallied around with contributions to 1993's evangelical Down with the King. Eight years on, the old-school triumvirate returns with another album built on collaborations, but this time largely from a bunch of noisy young rockers keen to pay their dues and boost their credibility. Step up Third Eye Blind, Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, Kid Rock, and Sugar Ray. And to think Run DMC had to be talked into teaming up with Aerosmith to record "Walk This Way" back in 1986. Of course, hip-hoppers are represented, too, with Method Man guesting on the impressive "Simmons Incorporated," and Nas and Mobb Deep'sProdigy chipping in on the jumping "Queen's Day." Pride of place, though, goes to "It's Over," a throbbing electro beat twinned with a stirring Russian choir sample that's produced by Jermaine Dupri. --Mike Pattenden

Royal Crown Revue were between releases when the short-lived swing revival turned relative newcomers Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy into household names. Originally released in the preresurgence year 1996, this collection finds Eddie Nichols's charismatic crooning and his band's revved-up revivalism in fine form. RCR favorites like "Hey Pachuco!" and "Zip-Gun Bop," which were both featured on the band's 1992 indie debut, are given the widescreen treatment here by Van Halen producer Ted Templeman. Other highlights include a cover of "Beyond the Sea" and "Barflies at the Beach," a wild remake of Louis Prima's "Sing Sing Sing" where Nichols sings the virtues of Flipper-laden tuna and other natural wonders. (Note: "Barflies" was added for this 1998 reissue.) As fate would have it, the band that launched the whole swing resurgence never really profited from its success. But as Nichols's heroes would say, that's show biz. --Bill Forman

5 out of 5 stars Hard-core revival swing.......2007-07-20

Or swing with a sting, that's how I'd describe the Royal Crown Revue. I'd always thought that Squirrel Nut Zippers started the swing revival til someone set me straight. Royal Crown Revue's "Mugzy" is all on the level of the Zipper's "H#ll." (Sorry, Amazon edits out the epithets)

I imagine this would make a good remake soundtrack for movies based on Raymond Chandler's novels. "Zip Gun Bop" even has the cop siren running in the background at the first. Plus, of course, there's the offer for a man to try on a pair of cement shoes and 'walk on water.'

"The Rise and Fall of the Great Mondello" has the feel of the old daredevil circuses. You can almost see the performer falling...

"Beyond the Sea" just blows poor Bobby Darin out of the water. (Pardon the bad pun!)

"Dating with No Dough" is also one of those upbeat, funny hard-luck stories. You've got to laugh, because most of us have been there.

Really no bad songs here. "Mugzy" is one of those CDs you can put on when you need to get moving or cheer up and count on having something good to hear.

5 out of 5 stars Crime Jazz.......2007-06-05

Established in 1989, Royal Crown Revue launched a swing revival that's still going strong and has spawned a host of imitators, from former Stray Cats singer Brian Setzer to the Cherry Poppin' Daddies. But Royal Crown Revue still rules the roost, with entries such as Walk on Fire (1999) and Greetings from Hollywood (2004). Whether you call it the bookish-sounding "neo-swing" or use the moniker supplied by front man singer Eddie Nichols--"hard-boiled swing"--you'll need a chaser after downing this powerful cocktail of swing laced with jive and rockabilly.

The accomplished sextet behind Nichols includes saxophonists Mando Dorame (tenor) and Bill Ungerman (barry), and trumpeter Scott Steen, backed by a rhythm section sharper than a stiletto: James Achor on guitar, Vinny Lepisto on bass, and drummer Daniel Glass. Nichols is, as they used to say, one hep cat: his voice brings to mind both Louies (Jordan and Prima), and the band's work reminds you of the "crime jazz" soundtracks of Elmer Bernstein and Henry Mancini. Listen to this one while reading Mickey Spillane's Kiss Me, Deadly and downing straight shots of Canadian Club.

Their signature tunes "Zip Gun Bop" and "Hey Pachuco!" are already standards in their own right. Their lightning-quick, be-bopping "Park's Place" brings back the best of Dizzy and Bird's jam sessions. Damn! These guys play tight! On "Beyond the Sea," Nichols out-swings and out-swoons Bobby Darin. "Barflies at the Beach"--a send-up of Louis Prima's version of "Sing, Sing, Sing"--closes this outing with a politically incorrect ditty about the delights of eating Charlie the Tuna...with a fin of Flipper thrown in for good measure. Yeah, man!

This is such an awesome band! The lead singer was born to sing swing! You will fall in love with every one of these great tunes! You cannot listen to this great CD without tapping your feet!

5 out of 5 stars The perfect swing album!.......2005-11-19

This was the album that discovered Swing music for my ears. Great sounding, energetic album.

If you want a good introduction to Swing, this is THE perfect album to get. Also check out "The Contender" by Royal Crown Revue, it was their follow up to Mugsy's Move. Great album as well.

I would highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Man i love this music.......2005-06-08

Simply a brilliantly fun album that shines in the band's musicianship. The group is so together and the songs are well balanced, flowing seamlessly through the changes in the songs that keep you listening and relate as a group of stories that are greta ot listen to and fun to dance to!

A very strong album that is a fun and fresh approach to the best type of music out there- swing baby!

Album Description

The process of choosing music for a wedding day can certainly be a daunting process for any couple. There are many choices and the questions can be endless. This collection is designed to give the bridal couple some key pointers to navigate the world of classical music for their wedding day. The package includes over 3 1/2 hours of music on 3 CDs for all portions of the wedding service, all from the Naxos classical label (known for high-quality recordings at inexpensive prices). As a bonus, the 20 page booklet will lead you through the process of choosing music, from hiring musicians to sample programs. Everything you need to create your own unique personal wedding soundtrack.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT WEDDING MUSIC!.......2007-01-24

I used these CD's for my wedding, and I was so happy I did. You need to buy this CD if you like having a traditional wedding! :)

5 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2006-07-05

I bought these CDs for my wedding, in ceremony and reception. Also, when I created my own wedding video, I used it as background music.

4 out of 5 stars A very complete selection of ceremony music!.......2005-02-02

I am getting married in several months and we couldn't decide what music we wanted at our wedding ceremony. This three disk compilation reminded us of all the great ones- including new options we hadn't thought about. I really enjoyed hearing the organ and strings versions of the songs. If you're someone who hears a classical or baroque piece of music, but can't remember the name or the precise tune, this is a must-have to jog your memory and trigger the tear ducts!

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Classical Selection.......2004-04-15

I searched all over for a CD set that had a somewhat comprehensive list of classical selections that are traditionally played at weddings. When I found this 3 CD set, I was very pleased. It contains 61 works from almost as many composers. This set might not contain the "best recording ever" of each of the selections, however it is very well done and the quality is very good. I used it primarily to choose the pieces that I wanted to have played by the church organist, and so the actual recordings were more for my consumption rather than for use in the ceremony/reception itself. However, I would not have hestitated to use the CD's in the wedding itself if needed. The book inside includes a list of suggested songs for various wedding styles (formal, outside, morning, etc.). From the classical neophyte to the seasoned classical music expert, this CD set will meet if not exceed expectations.

4 out of 5 stars Just one note..........2003-06-07

I have not heard this album, so I cannot rate it as a whole. (The form made me include a rating, but disregard that.) However, I want to point out that track 36, the Pie Jesu from Gabriel Faure's Requiem is - well, from a requiem, a mass for the dead. The Pie Jesu is a lovely, gentle movement, and it has a beautiful and pure sound that does seem to fit the mood of a wedding. The Latin words, however, mean "Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them everlasting rest," where "them" refers to the dead.

Beautiful, but perhaps not so suitable for a wedding.

Before there were khaki-pantsed swing dancers on TV and zoot-suited clubgoers in every major American city, Royal Crown Revue plied their proudly retro sound and look in underground L.A. nightspots. But what began as a curiosity blossomed into a national sensation. With The Contender, RCR are back to claim their title as the Johnny Appleseed of swing. Name-checking the right cultural icons (including Marlon Brando and Bettie Page) and covering a variety of classic tunes, from a breezy doo-wop take on "Stormy Weather" to a hard-boppin' version of the Dizzy Gillespie classic "Salt Peanuts," the group has clearly done its homework. Original tunes such as the single "Zip Gun Bop (Reloaded)," "Big Boss Lee," and the title track rock harder than the songs of the era they mean to emulate but are impressive nonetheless. This isn't the musical equivalent of your father's Oldsmobile. Your grandfather, on the other hand, would think it's just swell. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Royal Crown Review at the TIP TOP of thier game..........2006-08-10

Royal Crown Review is a lcoal Los Angeles swing combo(fronted by crooner Eddie Nichols), that doesn't nessicarily stick to swing. It is not uncommon to hear Nichols singing an Elvis Presley cover, or the band playing a Dizzie Gillespie tune or a rockabilly song. Nichols writes original that sound like "Gangster 40's" he also revives 40's tunes like Stormy Waether and 50's lounge covers like Beyond The Sea, and even r&b tunes like Walk Right In(The Walking Blues). This cd is the most mature the band has ever recorded. It has mostyl originals that do swing, and a revival of Lena Horne's 40's hit "Stormy Waether" but done with a Louis Prima 50's Las Vegas lounge sounding r&b shuffle rhythm(perfect for dancing). This cd also has "Salt Peanuts" a bebop jazz cover, and a Zip Gun Bop reamke. Great cd, great short solos, and smooth as ever vocals. Tight band tight cd.

1 out of 5 stars STICK WITH THE 'LIVE ALBUM'.......2006-02-27

What is this band's obsession with dialogue from gangster movies?-it reared its ugly head on the otherwise excellant 'mugsy's move' and on this it is even more predominant. It just isn't funny-so why do it? it reaches its nadir on 'big boss lee' which was so irritating i skipped the last part. Thing is when the dialogue is dispense with Eddie Nichols has one helluva swing voice witness 'stormy weather' (his version of 'beyond the sea' is the best ever!)and then he gets stupid again. I know it is supposed to go with the charm (sic) of the band, but i find it annoying. There really isn't much to commend this 'zip gun' is pretty ferocious and 'salt peanuts' never really catches fire, but 'deadly nightcall' is plain embarassing. I know Royal Crown can deliver, but please no more James Cagney impressions.

5 out of 5 stars Good, solid contemporary swing album. You'll find no filler here........2005-11-17

Nice album. Great beats, good energy and and nice crisp original sound. This type of swing music, is great to play at parties, from start to finish.

These guys sounds like a modern rendition of the old swing bands from the 30's and 40's. If you are open to hearing something different, that has a pulse, I would strong recommend this album.

Also, if you like this album, check out Royal Crown Revue's previous album, "Mugzy's Move". A great album as well.

5 out of 5 stars Swing On The Wild Side!.......2004-06-02

This will probably remain one of my favourite swing albums ever! The most powerful swing album in the world. That's what it is. You can hear Zip Gun Bop (Reloaded), Big Boss Lee, Port-Au-Prince (about Bettie Page), Walking Like Brando (about walking like Brando), Stormy Weather (another swing classic), Gillespie's Salt Peanuts,... Beautiful! Forget about Cherry Poppin' Daddies and that kinda stuff! Gangster Bop is on top again!

4 out of 5 stars Very solid album.......2003-06-11

The Contender is the Royal Crown Revue's very solid followup to Mugzy's Move. Although there isn't anything as strong as "Hey Pachuco" or "Mugzy's Move", the songs are all very good. This is more of a traditional swing album. One of the first things you notice about The Contender is the increased backing vocals from the band which really works on more traditional swing like "Morning Light", "Walkin' Like Brando", and their excellent cover of "Stormy Weather". The faster tracks such as "Big Boss Lee", "Work Baby Work" and the title track do an excellent job of showcasing the stellar musicianship of the band. There are also some great slower tracks here like "Friday The 13th" and "Everyone Knows You're Crazy" and the very jazzy instrumental "Deadly Nightcall". While the songs aren't nearly as memorable as Mugzy's Move, everything here is good and it's definitely worth checking out.

    Product Description

Royal Crown Revue s new EP, entitled El Toro, is being released to coincide with the bands 2007 European Tour, which will last six weeks (April 11 May 19, 2007) and cover 12 countries. It s RCR's first release since 2004's Greetings From Hollywood. The disc includes two brand new RCR originals (El Toro and Won't You Ride With Me), plus a slamming cover of Neil Diamond s 1966 classic Solitary Man. Like RCR's previous albums, El Toro runs the gamut stylistically. The explosive title track - which looks at a bullfight through the frightened eyes of a creature about to meet its maker combines elements of punk, surf, jazz and mariachi. Rockville is a rough and tumble instrumental in the tradition of Hammond B3 pioneer Wild Bill Davis. It s A Good Day shows off the band s stellar jazz chops, while Brazil is a prime example of the Louis Prima inflected swing that has become RCR s signature. Won t You Ride With Me closes out the disc, sliding over the listener like a late night cruise up the coastline.

    Album Description

Often imitated, but rarely matched, RCR has pioneered, over its fifteen-year career, a totally unique sound and style, serving as the blueprint for an entire generation of musicians and music lovers. This band was and is the spearheading force behind the retro style which has exploded from underground scene into bona fide cultural phenomenon. Royal Crown Revue's new EP, entitled El Toro, is RCR¹s first release since 2004's Greetings From Hollywood. The disc includes two brand new RCR originals ('El Toro' and 'Won't You Ride With Me'), plus a slamming cover of Neil Diamond's 1966 classic 'Solitary Man'.

5 out of 5 stars Music Which Aches To Be Heard.......2007-07-28

I borrowed this CD from the Public Library based on memories of an earlier version of the Symphony No. 1 on vinyl. Now it is a must own item for my personal collection.
The inclusion of "Crown Imperial" on this CD is a wonderful bonus. The first hearing at full volume by my home audience of Crown Imperial, obtained the simple but apt response of "Wow!". There is a cheerful and stately grandiosity there leading to a resounding and truly unforgetable climax.
The Symphony No. 1 sounds modern today, some 70 odd years after its creation. The entire work will make a profound impression on the attentive listener. The relentless scherzo movement followed by melancholy in the mood of November heard in the adagio cannot fail to resonate. The orchestra plays flawlessly throughout.

    4 out of 5 stars A muzzled Walton Sym. #1, which helps.......2006-05-17

Walton created a sensation as a young composer in the 1930s with this kinetic, brutal, some say malicious work. Adrian Boult was so disturbed by its aggressiveness that he stopped condcuting it in later life, and if played all out, the motor rhythms and crashing dissonances amount to a constant assault until the gentle, meditative strains of the flute appear in the third movement (by far the most impressive musically).

Previn made a specialty of the work when he was the youthful principal conductor of the LSO (1968-79). This is his later, kinder and gentler remake with the Royal Phil. from 1985. It's a muzzled performance, of which I'm glad. This hectic music can sound decidedly vulgar and overblown (a la Gliere). Here, the distant placement of the microphones and the decision not to spotlight the crash-and-bang aspect of the score are a definite help: you feel you can listen to the piece's inner workings without wincing. I must admit that Walton's macho idiom turns me off, and I run from performances of his music. That said, I made it through this CD with pleasure and had more respect for his First Sym. than I ever expected to.

    5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

5 out of 5 stars Zip Gun Bop.......2004-06-28

The first album from Royal Crown Revue, pioneers of Neo-Swing and kings of gangster bop. Sound is not that big, but they are fabulous anyway! Here you'll find original Zip Gun Bop and Hey Pachuco!. Daydreamin' is a wonderful vocal ballad. Eddie Nichols sounds fabulous, Stern brothers (Adam-bass, Mark-drums and Jamie-alto sax) with Mando Dorame and James Achor too.

    5 out of 5 stars Primo!.......1998-09-24

Lacking the brass of Scott Steen, this album still is quite near perfection. "Stormy Weather" is classic, and "Cold Shower" is insanely fast and fun. "Swingin' All Day" makes you want to do just that. Not the best of their releases, but still a must-have.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Start.......1998-08-31

This album swings from start to finish. They do indeed prove themselves to be the kings of the gangster bop. If you enjoy "Mugzy's Move", you need to hear this predicessor.

4 out of 5 stars Before they were stars..........1998-07-20

If you want to know what the boys of RCR were doing before "Mugzy's Move," check this out. It doesn't swing quite as hard as their later work, but they've still got that jive going that will make your toes tap all day long. If you're a true fan of the band, this is a must have: it's got "Stormy Weather" and the early versions of "Hey, Pachuco" and "Zip Gun Bop." If you're just getting into RCR, or swing altogether, it's a great buy, too. They are the quintessential neo-swing band.

5 out of 5 stars Proof That Jazz Is NOT Dead, but Alive and Kicking!.......2004-10-17

Lately, it doesn't seem that jazz is dead, but the genre definitely needs a classy zip. In the 50's and 60's, jazz had a certain elegance about it, that wasn't underminded by it's energy or sheer fun. Not a lot of bands seem to be able to do that anymore. When was the last time a classy, first-rate jazz band had a free show in New York City? How often do jazz bands tour all over the world and still make time to contact their fans on the internet? How often do first-rate jazz musicians stay after shows until they've met all of their fans?

The answer is: not often at all. I'd say never, but Royal Crown Revue does all of those and more.

The band, after 10 years of a busy and exciting career in dishing out what they accurately describe as "hard boiled swing", have proven to cynics and naysayers that they were more than bandwagon-jumping, trendy scenesters that followed a Gap commercial. This band has been committed to making original, soulful music, and doing innovative covers of tasteful classics. In their career, they've put rejuvinating energy into such old standards as "Beyond the Sea", "Stormy Weather" and "Salt Peanuts", showing any jazz fan that if they wanted to know the definitive version of any song, they can't stop paying attention to this band. On top of that, their originals demonstrate their musical genious as songwriters and musicians.

Their new album thankfully doesn't break this tradition. I thought that I knew the best versions of some of some of jazz's biggest standards, but their arrangement of "Come Fly With Me" even gives Old Blue Eyes a run for his money! This album is a best of the best without being a boring "Greatest Hits". here they provide some of their most obscure old gems, along with new covers and originals. The band takes to time like a great bottle of merlot: gracefully and with improved flavor. Some bands get more boring with years, yet this band manages to preserve their energy, their creativity, and their signature classic sound to release what may be one of the finest cd's of their career. If you don't know about this band, WAKE UP! If you think this band is another one of those "neo-swing" bands, you really ought to get with the times. This isn't 1996. It's 2005, and this band sounds better and brighter than ever. You can't claim to be a musical connoisseur until you know these guys, and this is a great place to start. What are you waiting for, bum?

5 out of 5 stars Topping the last two releases.......2004-07-28

RCR's latest offering comes blasting out like a note from Scott Steen's golden horn. Fans will appreciate the previously rare tracks from the band's sought-after 1994 demo and new listeners will not be able to deny the talent that seeps from their extensive repertoire starting with the essential 'Come Fly With Me' (preview it and two other songs on their brand new website). Every song following is filled with energy, romance, and enthusiasm. The new band members don't miss a beat.

By the end of the album, you'll be ready to relax to the lilting 'You Go To My Head' only to be jarred out of your romantic reverie as the horns come blaring back for a killer take on the classic 'Viva Las Vegas.'

This album is not only packed with an hour of awesome music, it also contains some of the best enhanced content I've seen on an album. Along with the killer design, it features photos of the band, stories behind the songs, an oft-requested/never-shown music video for their previous hit, 'Watts Local,' and more.

If you haven't heard from these guys for a while, have been an addicted fan for years, or find this is your first experience with the band, it's hard to deny this is a must have.

Support the band by buying from their site (and save money), where they also have an autographed version available.

5 out of 5 stars One of the more interesting & original modern swing bands.......2004-12-21

This was one of the more interesting and orininal of the modern swing bands. Listen to the opener "She Walks On Fire" with it's spainish "bull fight" sound, and the rollicking rockabilly with horns sound of "Watts Local", I was able to see these guys, and dance to them live at the OC Fair in Costa Mesa, they got everything from a swingin' creative drummer to a honkin' saxman, exellent original songs, and unique arrangements. A mixture of 50's era Vegas swing, and exotica!

    4 out of 5 stars Beware!.......2004-06-28

This album is something between Kings Of The Gangster Bop and Mugzy's Move. Royal Crown Revue are still great. The album is not as wild as The Contender. But it's still Royal Crown Revue album. "The Stranger", "She Walks On Fire" and "Besame Mija" are my favourite songs from this album.

5 out of 5 stars Loyal to this Royal.......2000-07-27

I bought Walk on Fire when it came out and it sat on the bottom of my collection for some time. I recently rediscovered and I can't stop playing it. This one beats 'em all. I'm constantly shocked at how little attention this band gets relative to other retro bands; their style, ability and range progress from album to album.

I saw RCR once live and was blown away by their on stage charisma. I can't wait for their next album . . . It's the Watts Local baby !

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2000-03-20

For all of you people who bought this CD, but didn't like it, you must be either a) smokin some weed or b) a friggin idiot. The music on this CD is very flowing, with each instrument sounding great alone, but molding with the others even better. Also, the songs on this CD are not all the same, which allowed me to get a feel for how well rounded the musicians are. This is a great CD, and I suggest buying it.
