If you love energetic beats coupled with explosive lyrical content then Blackout! is your album. This highly anticipated effort features the combined powers of the Wu-Tang Clan's Method Man and the Def Squad's Redman--it's 19 cuts of pure excitement. Production highlights include the RZA-produced "Cereal Killer," Erick Sermon's "Maad Crew," and the dark-and-dirty sounds of "Run 4 Cover," featuring the Wu's Ghostface Killah and Streetlife. The album remains focused throughout without trying to appeal to any specific audience. Lyrically Red and Meth consistently come with the best in wit and wordplay, weaving a musical tapestry that should hang on the wall of any hip-hop fan. You won't find any specific messages, themes, or philosophies, but any true head will tell you that Blackout! is hip-hop at its best. --Kenji Jasper

Album Description

This album contains 14 new tracks and a bonus DVD with 4 extra video pieces on it!

The music on Blackout rocks, has a truckload of sweat, blood and energy & conveys an intense insight into relationships (Walk Away) & personal politics (Gonna Be A Blackout Tonight - lyrics written by Woody Guthrie after the band was given special exclusive access & permission to use the words of Woody Guthire through his family). The record still contains rousing tunes rooted in Irish music & American Folk (Black Velvet Band & The Dirty Glass) and destined to be a Boston Bruins call to arms classic called "Time To Go". And it's important to mention that each member of the band played a crucial role, working hand in hand to create this new record. Everyone's influence from the youngest member of the band to the most experienced, bring together their many influences to play a role in creating an all time gem of a rock record. With each new record, they just don't let up, their passion, life experience & and true commitment to music fans shines through on every song.

5 out of 5 stars Dropkick Murphys are So Good, Even for a Yankees Fan!!!!.......2006-03-18

I love the songs made by the Dropkick Murphys even though I am a Yankees fan. Kiss me I'm Sh*tfaced is such a good and funny song also the dirty glass is another good song. This whole compilation is an amazing peice by the Dropkick Murphys

4 out of 5 stars This is awesome! .......2006-02-02

I'm a huge punk rock listener. I listen to every punk band you can think of. Dead Kennedys, Crass, Flux of Pink Indians, Rudimentary Peni, Kraut, Rancid, Distillers, NOFX, Anti-Flag, The Unseen... I even listen to The Casualties once in a while.

Last summer, someone told me that I should check out Dropkick Murphys. He had told me they were a cool Irish sounding punk band. I decided to check them out, and I bought The Warrior's Code. I was instantly blown away with it and I needed MORE! So, I went back to the CD store a couple of days later and got Do Or Die, Sing Loud Sing Proud and this one. And let me tell ya, this is an awesome little CD here. Very fun to sing along to. I guess I'll do a song by song review of it.

1. Walk Away - 10/10 - Great song. One of my favorites.
2. The Worker's Song - 9/10 - Catchy and fun.
3. The Outcast - 10/10 - I love the lyrics in this one.
4. Black Velvet Band - 9/10 - Heavy Irish influence. Awesome.
5. Gonna Be A Blackout Tonight - 10/10 - LOVE This song and it's music video, too!
6. World Full of Hate - 9/10 - Different from the other stuff, but this is why it's great.
7. Buried Alive - 8/10 - Good punk rock sounding song. It isn't one of the best, but it still rocks.
8. The Dirty Glass - 11/10 - My FAVORITE song on this CD and by the band.
9. Fields of Athenry - 10/10 - Great rock 'n roll sounding song.
10. Bastards on Parade - 7/10 - It's okay. I like it's instrumentals a bit.
11. As One - 9/10 - The bagpipes at the beginning are awesome.
12. This Is Your Life - 10/10 - Catchy & fun, like all the songs on here.
13. Time To Go - 9/10 - Great shout along track.
14. Kiss Me I'm Sh*tfaced - 9/10 - Kinda funny. I like it!

Overall, this is a pretty damn good record. If you're a fan of punk rock or rock 'n roll, you'll love it. IF you just like music in general, you'll love it. Oh, and if you do like it, definately get Sing Loud Sing Proud. I think that that one is their best. I can't believe I didn't get into these guys sooner!

PS: I'm much older than 13.. Well, 17 isn't much older, but yeah, I'm older than 13. :p

4 out of 5 stars Blackout Is Best Of Murphys?.......2006-01-19

This is a review for the enhanced version which comes with the bonus DVD. The DVD has the "Blackout" video, a concert video and a preview for their DVD.

This is the best Murphys album in my opinion. "Blackout" is a great mix of rock, irish and folk music. The album starts out with a bang and definitely keeps your attention. All the styles of their prior CDs are combined on this very good record.

"Walk Away" is the opener and sticks out as one of their better songs. "Worker's Song" is a standard Murphy anthem, and is great live. Their reworking of Woody Guthrie's "Gonna Be A Blackout Tonight" is the title track and is the best track on this album. "World Full Of Hate" is a powerful ballad that doesn't get lost in the acoustic guitars. "Fields Of Athenry" is maybe their best celtic cover, detailing the emotion of the lyrics. "As One" and "Time To Go" close out this great collection of records.

Pretty much everything DM puts out is top notch - this is definitely their finest.

4 out of 5 stars Purely fun.......2005-12-03

"Workers Song", and "Kiss Me I'm Sh*tfaced" alone make this an album worth buying. It will put some new listeners in mind of the Beastie Boys "Licenced to Ill" album. Fun, album.

German heavy metal marauders Scorpions recorded seven studio records before breaking in to the U.S. market in 1982 with Blackout. The album became the group's first platinum disc in the U.S., and the dynamic single "No One Like You" became a staple of album rock radio. While the Scorpions had created powerful anthems and epic rockers in the past, Blackout mixed the ingredients just right. The title track was an endorphin rush of fast-riffing guitars and electrified, high-pitched vocals that culminated with the sound of shattering glass. "Can't Live Without You" was a powerful melange of flash, firepower, and pure melody, and the slow, surging "China White" sounded like a psychedelic interpretation of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir." After years of ignored visas, Scorpions had finally arrived in America. --Jon Wiederhorn

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the great melodic metal albums .......2007-03-05

With their 1982 release, Blackout, Scorpions finally broke through the U.S. market. Their previous two albums, Lovedrive and Animal Magnetism respectively, showed the band adapting a more commercial sound without abandoning their metal roots. Those albums would also introduce longtime lead guitarist Matthias Jabs to the band, whose melodic style was a sharp contrast to the wild kamikaze playing of their previous lead guitarist, the excellent Uli Jon Roth. Rather than be a band that seemed to be going in two different directions, Scorpions were now a more focused band and this would come to fruition on Blackout. "No One Like You" would become their first U.S. hit single and would become one of their most enduring songs. Like their future hit "Rock You Like a Hurricane", the track contains a soft spoken verse that builds in momentum before hitting its loud and memorable chorus. Whether it's heavy songs carried by wicked riffs such as "Dynamite" and the title track, an anthem like "Can't Live Without You", or catchy melodic songs like "You Give Me All I Need" or "Arizona", the band pull it off extremely well. Not to be outdone is "When the Smoke is Going Down", another in a long line of great power ballads that the band has done well since their beginnings. Other great tracks include the short and intense "Now!" and the dramatic "China White." All told, this is one of the great melodic metal albums of the `80s. And their next album, Love at First Sting, would be even better. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars for this breakthrough album.......2006-08-30

Blackout is seen by many as the point where the Scorpions became what they'd be known as throughout the 80's. Basically pandering power ballad lightweights. The again with the kind of sales figures they were racking up it's unlikely the band cared, they'd paid their dues with albums like Virgin Killer and Taken By Force and documented their rise on Tokyo Tapes.

Here we see the band roar out of the blocks with the title track, a metal tour de force with a line of humou running through it. Top stuff. But proceedings take a shift with the next three tracks, Can't Live Without You/No One Like You/You Give Me What I Need and this is sort of the blueprint for so much that went wrong with the band. Individually not bad songs, actually hits in some territories, but stacked up after one another it certainly drains the energy away.

The rockers that come later do restore some order but aren't exactly awesome. But we do get an example of the famously bad Scorpions song title schtick with the albums closer When the Smoke is Going Down. But fans have loved them for such silliness for years and I can easily forgive them.

Rock journos lauded this album as a link between the metal cred 1970's and the more generic hard rock juggernaut of the bands 80's and 90's output. That's as may be, but I can't help but feel a little let down by this album. Some great songs but for some reason it rarely hits my stereo, my vote going to Virgin Killer for that less commercial kill factor.

3 out of 5 stars Blackout- thier best "80's" output .......2006-07-25

I would say Scorpions took a nose dive artistically when they went into the 80's with Mercury. This nor any other Mercury era record cannot compare to what Scorpions did in the 1970's. However i still think it is a pretty decent pop/metal album, certainly better the "Loverdrive" or "Love At First Sting". The energy and "metal-ness" is much higher here, even though it boasts some inane lyrics. When compared to any of the Roth-era material however, this is sub-par.

5 out of 5 stars Their Breakthrough Album.......2006-07-06

This album FINALLY got the Scorps noticed and played on the radio. Now go back and get Animal Magnetism, Lovedrive and their original compilation (from In Trance, Virgin Killers, Fly to the Rainbow, etc). That stuff never got radio-play and is not the pop most people are familiar with.

5 out of 5 stars this isn't my favorite Scorps cd......but it's still a 5...........2006-06-06

i was a junior in high school when this was originally was released on vinyl. i had already been weened on Animal Magnetism and Lovedrive by then, but was pleasibly surprised by this bad boy. what a breath of fresh air! if you were a hard core rocker, then you had Metallica and Motorhead to cut your teeth to, but for those of us who still liked the late '70's early '80's hard rock, ala Y&T, Dio, Ozzy, Judas Priest, AC/DC and others, then this was a diamond in the rough. i was blown away when i first heard this. it didn't seem like the same Scorpions i was used to. it seemed heavier, more alive, than those previous releases. this was a release you could sink your teeth into. a head banger. something the Scorps really hadn't fully accomplished until then. not only did they tear it up, but they slowed it down as well. "china white" is an all time classic, with the likes of the raucas "arizona" and thrashers "dynamite", "now" and of course the famed "blackout" and "no one like you". this is a cd any rocker must have in his/her collection. whether you're a thrash fan, a death metal head, or just a plain ol' rocker, you'll do well to have this in your collection. peace.

5 out of 5 stars Who turned off the lights?.......2007-07-23

I'll admit that I didnt want to check out any collabo albums after hearing The Firm but since I like Redman and Method Man , I gave it a shot and its straight fire. The albums starts of with Blackout! as the two work their magic on the mic. They keep things moving with the equally hot Mi Casa and their second single Y.O.U. The first single Tear It Off(which is also on the In Too Deep soundtrack) was great and that video still makes me laugh till this day. LL Cool J and Ja Rule join in on 4 Seasons and I must say that that was the best verse I've heard from LL in a while. Da Rockwilder is cool but they should have made it longer. I dont usually like edited songs but Maaad Crew will get a some listens from me. The only songs I didnt feel is Mic Cheka(butchers the old Das Efx classic) and Fire Ina Hole. The rest of this album is exceptional. Bottom Line: Red And Meth's Blackout! is the best rap collaboration album of all time. The beats were superb, the rhymes were on point and the guests were not too shabby themselves. Standout Tracks: BLACKOUT!, MI CASA, Y.O.U., 4 SEASONS, TEAR IT OFF, DA EOCKWILDER, DATS DA S*** RUN FOR COVER, CEREAL KILLER, HOW HIGH REMIX(off The Show soundtrack), 1,2, 1,2, WELL ALL RITE CHA(off Doc's Da Name) and BIG DOGS(off Judgement Day).

5 out of 5 stars Better Beats?... You must be out of your mind........2007-04-18

Someone wrote that the "beats on 'Blackout' are sub par, thanks in part to the Wu Tang crew" and a few other collaborators. This is one of the best hip hop albums to date. Lyrical quality and quality of beats don't get much better than "Blackout," Red and Meth compliment each other perfectly on the album and there is not a track that I feel like I have to skip over. Finding an album where every song is a quality track is becoming more and more elusive in the current hip hop market.

4 out of 5 stars Blackout!.......2006-09-25

Two very skilled MC's over some bangin production. Whether you're a Mef fan or Reggie's you'll both agree that together they make unstoppable records. Anyone seeking an ill listen throughout the length of an album will be completely satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Hot $hit.......2006-02-17

To say that Redman and Method Man know what they're doing is an understatment...with club hits mixing pumping, brain pulsing beats and rhymes that out rhyme even the best in the biz, this album sports quality tracks with an overall quality good time. Recomended, highly, to any fan of hip-hop. Method Man is the man, and with Red at his side he's unstoppable. TICAL!

5 out of 5 stars Blackout.......2007-07-04

"Blackout": Britt Black-one of the best albums ever made.

Britt Black embarked on a solo gig after leaving the Canadian pop-punk band LiveOnRelease (great band by the way) and playing bass for the infamous Bif Naked (also amazing). After enjoying two albums from LOR (Seeing Red and ...Goes On A Fieldtrip), Britt Black came with up with "Blackout"

"Blackout" is a mix of guitar rifs, one true ballad, a "slower" song and a exceptional lyrics with an unusually beautiful voice to back it up. Here's a list of the tracks and my opinion:

1. Baby, Come On Back: 5/5 An amazing opener with heavy guitars and great lyrics. One of the best songs from "Blackout" and should be a single.

2. She Sells Sanctuary: 3/5 A good song but a little too plain for me. My least favorite.

3. Jet Black Heart: 5/5 The first single and exceptional song. The best written on the album

4. Stuck Here: 5/5 The true ballad and seductive. Should be the fourth single.

5. Sick & Tired: 4/5 I thought this song was funny without being funny. A very good song.

6. In Your Face: 5/5 Very good song and great lyrics

7. Nighttime: 10/5 The best song on "Blackout" and third single

8. Leave A Light One: 5/5 The slower song but very good. Should be the fifth and last single

9. Speed Of Light: 5/5 The second single. Britt's voice is so melodic here.

10. Good Girls: 5/5 Amazing song but it took some time to get to me.

11. Definitely Maybe: 5/5 Good song, used to be my favorite

12. Girl Of Your Dreams: 7/5 Beautiful song. One of the best on the album. The best sounding song

13. The Next Big Thing: 5/5 Sort of weird the way it's arranged but nonetheless an amazing finish

I know that I gave almost each track a 5/5 rating but that's because it's one the best albums I've ever heard. You need to go pick up this album. Now, where I'm from, nobody knows who Britt Black is so I'm at an advantage but I've only been able to find two copies of "Blackout" since 2006. Your best bet is to buy it from the internet.

5 out of 5 stars Blackout in the RAD room.......2006-05-09

Every time I listen to Blackout in the Red Room, one word comes to mind: RAD. And that is what this album is. Although I have never figured out what a red room is, I still love this record and appraise it as a rock n' roll masterpiece. My favorite tracks include Blackout in the Red Room, Fuel to Run, and the kind of hit single "Why do you think They Call it Dope?". They still play the video occasionally on Vh1 Clasic. Jizzy Pearl's voice is incredible and Skid Rose's guitar pieces although simple are awesome. There is also a lot of impressive bass work, notably on "Fuel to Run". Well, I guess everything on this album is great, so you should probably buy it or at least download it for free from lovehate.com

5 out of 5 stars Still kicks ass!!.......2005-08-11

One of the very few late 80's / early 90's American Metal albums that holds up to the test of time. When all the other L.A. bands were worried about their hair, these guys came out dirty and raw and definately kicking some serious ass. This album simply R-O-C-K-S!!!! HARD. great songs, great playing, great vox. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite bands of the time..........2004-09-10

I remember seeing these guys on the old Headbangers ball, and I ran out and bought the CD the next day. I love every track on the album. The vocals are intense and the songs just have a great hook to them. I had a chance to see these guys open for AC/DC some years ago and the blew me away.
I played this CD so much that I wore it out...thanks to amazon I have a new copy...

Get this album if you like the old metal days...you will love it...!

5 out of 5 stars stunning album.......2004-09-03

This is one of the finest hard rock albums ever. <---- note the period.

however, instead of shelling out over 20 bucks for it here, you can go to lovehate.com and download the album for free. courtesy of the band.

rock on, rock soldiers!

4 out of 5 stars Good but Not Great.......2003-04-16

I was first introduced to this album by my girlfriend's brother in law, he threw this CD on while I was helping him move one day. He played the title track, and skipped thru a few more songs, played a few more and then skipped some more, then it was over. After he left I was at the house alone and decided to play it track by track and get a feel for it myself. I was into it, this band was cool. I first heard vocalist Jizzy Pearl on the 1999 L.A. Guns album "Shrinking Violet" and I loved his stuff. He is actually a great vocalist and I think he deserves to be taken seriously, he has great range and an awesome, gritty voice, combined with a great scence of melody. He is the center of this band. But anyway I do recommend picking this album, but you will have to deal with some pretty useless and boring tracks. But that's ok. The tracks I recommend will keep you happy and rocking. Definitely skip over "Tumbleweed" and "One More Round" they are the worst of all, but you will absolutely love "Blackout In the Red Room", "Rock Queen", "Why Do You Think They Call It Dope" (although you'll have to excuse the dance mix samples in that song) but don't let that throw you, "Slave Girl", and of course, my personal favourite two tracks here are "Mary Jane" and "Fuel To Run" When I plug this album in, I head straight for them. Buy this album, its well worth it, and you may grow to like the weaker tracks on here. After all, it's only my opinion.

Album Description

Still ironically considered new artists, Fertile Ground has seven years, countless performances, and dozens of recordings to their credit. After 2 years of extensive touring, writing and recording, the group has unveiled their fourth full-length masterpiece, simply entitled Black Is… the highly-anticipated CD, is the sequel to the acclaimed 2002 release Seasons Change. This fourth full-length album, which will be internationally released and supported by an extensive world tour, contains a range of ethereal classics such as the title track, Black Is…, a soulful jazz waltz ballad full of affirmation, the joyful noise of Live In the Light; and the introspectively revealing song Naked, which gives us an example of how to truly connect with and reflect each other.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely peerless.......2005-06-03

I bought this CD after having seen Fertile Ground perform live in April. All I can say is Wow! Their music is spiritual, yet fun and lively -- they had people dancing in the crowded aisles of the theater. This is real music folks.

Fertile Ground's style encompasses jazz, reggae, samba with a little hip hop for good measure. And what can I say about Navasha Daya's voice? This vocalist sounds a lot like Phyllis Hyman to me, but far from being a soundalike, Daya is definitely a unique talent. She is a commanding presence not just because of her powerful set of pipes, but she has a way of engaging the audience that makes you want to watch this group all night. And the band does not play second fiddle to her voice because they can all hold their own. That is the hallmark of a good group -- when the musicians get to shine as much as the vocalist. As good their live show is, the CD is even better because you get to hit repeat as often as you like.

"Black Is" features 10 tracks along with some interludes and an instrumental. The title song is a love song to Black people that speaks to inner beauty and strength and exhorts the listener to remain steadfast. "Changing Woman" is a song that upholds the woman's various roles in life and is billed as a tribute to a native spirit. This is a balanced CD with some uptempo music that will make you groove, as well as some slower thought-provoking tracks.

This is definitely music for those of us with more on our minds than the latest dance step and material goods. I recommend it.

There's something genuinely interesting about (hed) Planet Earth. Rather than simply singing about being different, they actually attempt to break from convention. That spirit is what makes Blackout a fascinating album. Though nearly all the 14 tracks kick off into a metal frenzy at some point, they're wildly varied in their pace and feel. "Crazy Life," begins with sinister Wu-Tang keyboards, then rips into a raucous chorus, before a hard-hitting rap about sex on the road leads to a screaming rock crescendo. "Flesh and Bone" features vocalist Jahred conjuring lost souls at midnight crossroads, while the shuffling "Other Side" is cushioned by a soft 1970s haze. Elsewhere pop, soul, reggae, and folk slip into the mix, making the band's histrionic outbursts all the more effective. Jahred's lyrics, too, are above the norm, if a bit too self-focused. --Dominic Wills

4 out of 5 stars It's not BROKE, but you can buy this one!.......2006-03-10

While not as impressive as their breakout 'Broke' (no not their debut, but the CD that got them noticed) 'Blackout' is still a really good album. The opener gets you right into the CD with Jahreds ranting "Suck it up" but it's songs like 'DANGEROUS' and 'ONLY ONE' that really get the party started, and the rap oriented 'CRAZY LIFE' that show you their versatility. My favorite track here is 'OTHER SIDE' which is just that, the other side to this band. The song is melodic and cushioned with that 70's rock vibe, but it works on SO many levels. 'CARNIVALE' is probably the most standoutish song here, with the circus music in the backdrop and the eerie vocals it just kicks major @$$ as serves as a unique venture into uncharted territory for the boys of the (hed)...'BLACKOUT' while being the single and the title track, is not my favorite choice and is somewhat dissapointing. 'HALF THE MAN' is great and 'FALLEN' is as well...'OCTOPUSSY' is ehhh and the closer 'REVELATIONS' while not terrible is nothing special and should have been swapped with 'CARNIVALE' which is truly their most unique song on the album and is usually where I turn off the album anyways...Great follow-up even if it's not as good as the predecesor.

3 out of 5 stars once in a great while this album makes my cd changer........2005-06-03

I do like this band, but not as much as the other things i listen to(read my other reviews). This album is very quirky. I can only get hooked on the tracks Half the Man, and Carnivale. I think this band had a lot of potential. This album seems very unorganized in my opinion. I think they need a lyrical structure that is uniform and fits together. They can play (not really in my opinion as a killer musician), and they just need some solid ground. I only like to listen to this album once in a great while. Check it out. You be the Judge.

5 out of 5 stars great album from an awesome band.......2004-10-06

hed pe has been one of my favorates after the song "get away" was featured on NASCAR Thunder 2003. The standout tracks are well, ummm, ALL OF EM. Hedpe is very consitent troughout the entire album. a pick up for nu-metal or metal fans.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-08-06

Originally I was not introduced to (hed) Planet Earth until I had gone to a concert with the bands: Saliva, Stereomud, Systematic, and (hed)PE and the concert was amazing it was the best concert I have ever been to and the music was so amazing that the next day I went out to buy these bands albums. As I went through the album I was like they played that and it was awesome, I guess there are different ways to listen to an album, great cd i recommend this cd to anyone who likes heavy rock

5 out of 5 stars The best Rap/Metal band ever........2004-06-13

Its true, Hed Pe is the only band that can possibly remain as playful and rap going as they are while still containing heavy, headbanging qualities to their music. This album in honest opinion isnt as great as Broke, their best album by far, but it definately is as close to perfection as it can get.
Suck it Up 10/10 - One of Hed's best songs to date. And its a perfect opener to.
Bury Me 8/10 - Great, but nothing that we havent seen before.
Dangerous 8.5/10 - Another great Hed Pe song that remains true to their sound.
Blackout 9/10 - With a very catchy chorus, this song becomes a party hit within seconds.
Get away 7.5/10 - The first melodic music on the album but still a good song.
Crazy Life 8/10 - This to is great for parties, and really easy to sing along to.
Half the man 9/10 - Great melodic song.
Only One 10/10 - Perhaps the best headbanging song on the album.
Other Side 10/10 - Im in love with this tune. Its so suttle yet so powerful.
Flesh and Bone 9.5/10 - A great headbanging song as well.
Octopussy 10/10 - Heavy. If only they had turned this into a real song.
Carnivale 9/10 - You notice this song instantly with its circus like music at the start.
Fallen 10/10 - Great Hed Pe.
Revalations 9.5/10 - Good song to end off on, though i feel it could have been ever better.

5 out of 5 stars short but oh so sweet.......2007-05-12

this album is an important part of any GBV fans library, the song get right to the point, and capture the feeling of any 12 minute rock anthem in 45 seconds, "kisses to the crying cooks" will make youwant to cry and
"volcano divers" is beautiful, and the first track features writing by "manager for life" almost, pete jamison, weird, get it, play it, and if you see my copy of this on 45 stolen by an ex girlfriend, call me, LONG LIVE ROCKATHON

5 out of 5 stars A short pop classic.......2007-02-05

Forget the length of the songs/disc and the lo-fi qualities that may draw some listeners. The lyrical talents in this disc are top notch, which possibly explains why versions of many of these songs made full length albums along the way.

Some reasons to purchase this disc:
1)If you like these songs elsewhere then you will apppreciate, maybe even love, these versions. They are completely different imaginings of the songs and thus worth your time
2) exceptional song writing with creative lyrics (even for Pollard) and quirky, idiosynchratic melodies
3)poppy short songs that pass the "I hit the back button right away and listen to it again" test

Apart from all of that it fills in as a historical document in those early years when the EPs were a little more odd and eclectic.

It's a must own for GBV fans and for listeners new to the group this is not a bad way to get acquainted to their early lo-fi material.

5 out of 5 stars their best EP.......2006-07-21

if vampire on titus could be re-recorded...if the versions of marchers in orange and dusted are any indication, it would be the greatest LP of all time. also here is the all-time GbV classic, my impression now. this is a very nice little disc.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of a purchase by all GbV fans..........2005-05-29

You are reading this review because you are wondering if this EP is worth the price you'll pay for it. If you are paying $10 or less, than it is.

It's short, at only about 15 minutes. It is probably only for GbV enthusiasts, who are obsessive completists by nature anyways. For its length, it contains several essential GbV tracks, and therefore cannot be easily slotted into the "hardcore fans only" slot. "My Impression Now" is excellent, "Indian Fables" is among their best acoustic fare since "14 Cheerleader Coldfront", "Dusted" is a good reworking of the original track, and "Kisses to the Crying Cooks" is a masterful reworking of the very excellent "Over the Neptune" that appeared on the "Propeller" album.

If you have a half-dozen or so albums by Pollard and/or GbV, I woiuld recommend this album as a good compliment to what you already have.

5 out of 5 stars Best 12-minute album you'll ever hear!.......2004-11-03

At over fifty cents per minute these had better be great songs, and they are. There are enough hooks here for the last 3 GBV albums, which should tell you how great the old stuff was (sorry Bob - I understand your need to evolve though). The disc (at least the old version I have) comes in one of those low-budget cardboard covers similar to LPs, which seems to cause this disc to disappear from my collection and then reappear occasionaly for several consecutive listenings. The cliche "pop gem" truly applies here.

Established jazz artists like vibraphonist Stefon Harris hold it on faith that their fans--and maybe some critics, too--will follow them when they gravitate toward the commercial side of the tracks with pop-informed albums. Still, even taking into account the need to reach a broader audience at a time when instrumental jazz has fallen out of favor, Evolution seems like a step backward, not forward. As contemporary jazz--if not Contemporary Jazz--goes, this album is a cut above. Harris has a great ear for melody, a gift for intoxicating, offbeat arrangements, and a knack for sublimating influences ranging from funk to fusion. (He is abetted in the latter style by Marc Cary, who often sounds like Return to Forever-era Chick Corea on electric piano.) But even if some of the performances get under your skin with repeated listening--a cover of Sting's ballad "Until" casts a sneaky spell--too much of the album is bland and predictable. While it's nice to hear Harris return from the rarified heights of his Grand Unification Theory suite and play with a working band again, he's capable of more evolutionary sounds than these. --Lloyd Sachs

I was first introduced to Mr. harris freshman cd A Cloud of red dust.I knew after hearing that, that this cat was on the rise of young new artist to contend with. and after hearing Evolution, again this young man has already exceeded my expectations of his talent. I look forward to his next project.anyone reading this review buy this cd, you will be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely kilin'.......2006-01-27

There has been a lot of mediocre electric jazz/hip-hop/fusion like cross-over stuff these days, but this album is just plain killin' y'all. Harris's original compositions on here are beautiful, his improvisation brilliant. Great soloing from Marc Cary on keys and Casey Benjamin on alto. Terreon Gully's drumming is perhaps the real standout; ridiculously ingenious grooves and accompaniment. Dang, the only other younger cat who can keep up with him these days it seems like is Ronald Bruner in Kenny Garrett's band, but they aren't doing nearly as cool arrangements as these...

If you want to get your hands on some of the hippest new stuff out there you can't go wrong with this, yo :)

5 out of 5 stars Intricate and Compelling! .......2005-09-12

Because of the lack of good music on current radio stations, I have had a hard time finding new and interesting jazz musicians. I came across Stefon Harris's name in Downbeat magazine. I am awed by this CD. The music is lush and compelling, the beats intricate and riffs are many! The melodies and tonal changes are intriguing. This is a vastly talented group of musicians and a lot of thought and heart went into the making of this CD. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars Innovative Excellence.......2005-01-10

Evolution is a superb CD. Every person that I shared this CD, bocomes a instant fan. The music is so insightful that it command to be heard. It is wonderful to such a skilled musician find the medium to convey his talents. He represents Blue Notes pattern of talented musicians. Now! Make DVD of one his performances.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like it.......2006-07-04

I've been a devout H2O fan for years, but I've only recently completed my H2O full length collection by picking this up. I must've been insane to have lived without this CD for so long. Obviously (look at my username), H2O has had a huge impact on me as a person, more specifically the lead singer Toby Morse. I think I'm lucky that I haven't seen H2O live while this CD has been absent from my collection (actually I'm seeing them live for the first time in August), and here's why:

There isn't one bad song on here. Of course, with the exception of Go, you can pretty much say that for all of their full lengths. Most specifically, their debut album is NYHC with a little more cheerful mood to it, if you will. Songs like "Spirit of '84", "Surrounded", "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow", and especially "5 Year Plan" and "Family Tree" have extremely infectious choruses or just "crew" vocal parts in general that beg you to memorize every word. Yeah yeah yeah, so what? This can be found in every hardcore band, right? Maybe, but I can only think of a few bands, namely Warzone, that incorporate true and positive lyrics in a such a catchy yet serious manner. Sorry if that didn't make any sense.

Another great thing about this CD compared to the others is that it's FASTER. Positive, catchy, and fast is the way hardcore should be, and even if this isn't really a hardcore album, H2O stays true to their roots and delivers in a truly distinctive way.

5 out of 5 stars my friends lookout for me like family.......2001-08-25

first off, let it be known that my music tastes are completely polar from any resemblance of hardcore. but, $hit! this is a great cd. i had heard the cd several times following its release, but disregarded it due to its hardcore style. then i actually took time to listen. from beginning to end the subjects of the songs are great. several years later i still drop this cd in to the deck and put it on repeat. any young man will identify with the content of h2o's material, and anyone with a pulse will sing along.

4 out of 5 stars Best of Three.......2001-05-19

This album is by far their best album. Unfortunetly, they have sold themselves out and signed a record deal with MCA Records and will now be heard on the radio. But their earliest albums are still good.
