Compilations assembled to showcase record label rosters have become increasingly the norm. On Violator: The Album, the featured artists--including LL Cool J, Noreaga, the Beatnuts, and Busta Rhymes, are on different labels but have one thing in common--Chris Lighty's Violator Management company. "Vivrant Thing," Q-Tip's bouncy ode to women and the Flipmode Squad's playful "Whatcha Come Around Here For" foreshadow the album's up-tempo romp. Unfortunately, the majority of the remaining tracks are not the established artists' best work, but the compilation aptly exposes several up-and-comers. Nevertheless, names such as Mobb Deep, Fat Joe, and Big Pun--all of whom appear here--make Violator a management company with an extremely street savvy clientele. --Celine Wong

4 out of 5 stars Old school.......2007-04-24

I loved this disc when it came out. It was in heavy rotation for quite a while in my car. Unlike previous reviewers my personal favorite on this album was Cru, Ohh wee.

2 out of 5 stars violator - the album.......2005-03-16

this is one of those albums that if you heard it back when it came out in 1999, you would have thought it was pretty decent, but the more you listen to it, the more you realize that it's at best an average album, and that's being optimistic.

*vivrant thing...it's a nice song...but get q-tip's amplified to get a better feel of it. it sticks out like a sore thumb on this album.

*whatcha come around here for...a nice flipmode song.

*the rest of the album is horrible until the late middle, the thugged out posse cut is (yawn) ok, big noyd's cut is good, then the beatnuts, cam'ron, mysonne's solo cut, busta rhymes's bus-a-bus remix, and the violators collab cut at the end are the best songs. everything else is trash. i wouldn't waste my money buying this...but i did a long time ago.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 star compilation.......2004-12-29

Not as good as Violator V2.0 but still a decent compilation. Despite half the artists on here are not on the Violator roster. Overall there's 18 songs, 8-10 are good, 3-6 are ok, 4-6 are bad or horrible songs. A lot of artists are on here as well as producers (17 total, Havoc does 2 songs every other one is done by a different producer) so you get a lot of different beats and styles on the album. I'm indifferent if you should buy it, it has good songs but just as many that aren't worth listening to.

#2 - 2(Q-tip -- I hate this song)
#3 - 5 (flipmode squad)
#4 - 7.5 (noreaga & scarlett o' harlem)
#5 - 8 (LL cool J)
#6 - 9 (Franchise f/ ja rule)
#7 - 8.5 (Eightball, Big Pun {R.I.P.}, Fat Joe)
#8- 1 (HORRIBLE Song by Cru)
#9 - 8 (mysonne, mase, eightball)
#10 - 9 (Mobb Deep)
#11 - 6 (R&B type song by: Next f/ mysonne)
#12 - 9.5 (Gangsta $h!+ by: Capone, Iman thug, maze, musolini, scarlett o'harlem, final chapter & noreaga does the hook)
#13 - 8.5 (big noyd)
#14 - 6.5 (beatnuts)
#15 - 6 (cam'ron & busta rhymes)
#16 - 9.5 (mysonne)
#17 - 9 (cormega f/ lil wayne on the hook (incorrectly labeled as hot boys)
#18 - 4 (busta rhymes)
#19 - 8 (L Boogie, snoya blade, noreaga, prodigy, busta rhymes, mysonne)

Various Artists - Violator: The Album (Violator, 1999)

First off, half of these people aren't even on the Violator roster, like Eightball, Mysonne (who both appear on here more than once), and the Hot Boys. A&R's must have really wanted to promote Mysonne but where is he now? (Same question for Eightball.) Also, only Lil' Wayne and B.G. appear as the Hot Boys and they only do the chorus on "Who Can I Trust" (with Cormega). A&R's were just using the "it" people of 1999 to promote their album. Also, I remember seeing the poster for this album and Missy was on there. Where is she on the album? The other songs aren't that great either: "Busta's "Bus-a-Bus Remix", Noreaga's "I Wanna F*** You", and surprisingly Mobb Deep's "Nobody Likes Me". Check the chorus by Prodigy: "Nobody likes me/Everybody hates me/So I gotta grab my gun." This was the start of Mobb Deep's downfall. Saving graces are Noyd's "S**t That He Said", Q-Tip's "Vivrant Thing", Mase, Mysonne and Eightball's "Do What Playas Do", and Beatnuts' "Beatnuts Forever". -EJR

3 out of 5 stars So So.......2003-01-25

One of hip-hop's most prominent management company is celebrating its existence with the release of this eighteen track collection. The album is built around the Violator management company and a variety of talents from their long roster. Record label bragging is what this album is really about. But why not? How many other labels can boast a lineup like this?

Overall, Violator is a pretty good album. Like most compilations, you might find yourself skipping through a lot of [junk], but you'll also find some impressive contributions from A-list rappers like Q-tip, Busta Rhymes, Flipmode Squad, LL Cool J, and Big Pun.

Q-Tip (formerly of Tribe Called Quest) headlines the album with his [booty]-shaking hit "Vivrant Thing." This radio friendly hit is the brightest gem on the entire album, but certainly not the only track worthy of mention. Flipmode squad comes through with the album's third track "Whatcha Come Around Here For." And there is a great synergy in the arrangement of rappers Big Pun, Eighball, and Fat Joe in the fat/phat cut "Heavy Weights."

The Album doesn't have the unified flow of a single artist album, but that is not what it is about. Violator is good because it allows you to sample a variety of different artist without having to actually buy eighteen different CDs.

4 out of 5 stars V 4.0.......2005-04-26

Violator the management company of many hip-hop/rap artist released volume 2 of their heaviest hitters. The beats featured on "Intro" starts of with a lot to come on this compilation. The first two songs which were produced by The Neptunes were big for both Busta Rhymes and Noreaga. LL Cool J came out with something harder that we haven't heard from him in a while with "Put Your Hands Up". "Livin' In Da City" featured Da Franchise & Butch Cassidy over a west coast banger went well with their flow. The innovative "Sexual Chocolate" by Cee-Lo is in a category of its own. The upbeat beat on "Hoppin' In My Car" is something to bounce to from Hollyhood. The more dramatic of all, "Die 3" could have been a standout with its violins, but The Outfit could have put a little more seasoning on here. Still it's a personal favoriate. Beware of track 11, because it actually contains two songs and the second one "Options" is a good combination of Capone & Noyd. This album is better than some of these artist's releases. If you're a hip-hop/rap fan with a diverse collection, this is a good addition.

4 out of 5 stars Good Compilation.......2004-12-29

For starters, this album is better than the first, it has more good songs and 2 classics as well as 7 great songs, the remaining 7 are not too good or horrible songs (2 are average). A lot of different artists are on the album much like the first Violator, and all songs are produced by different people (except 3 producers do 2 songs each) so you get a lot of different styles and beats on the album. Most of the artists are big names and a few groups are collaborating on this album, with one member from each group, so you may think the collaborations are somewhat odd but they are some of the better songs on here. A good album to have for the 9 very good songs and the 2 ok ones, I'd recommend it.

#2 - 6 (Busta rhymes f/ kelis)
#3 - 9 (Noreaga f/ neptunes -- also on his "God's Favorite" album)
#4 - 7 (LL cool J)
#5 - 9 (Da Franchise f/ butch cassidy -- good beat)
#6 - 10 (Classic gangsta song by Noreaga & Styles -- great beat)
#7 - 7.5 (memphis bleek & geda k -- the beat is a little annoying but the lyrics are on point)
#8 - 9.5 (jojo pelligrino makes a good remake of Rakim's classic "Microphone Fiend" -- great beat)
#9 - 3 (Cee-Lo of goodie mobb -- I'm not a fan of his so i don't like this song)
#10 - 4.5 (missy elliot, ja rule, tweet -- R&B song)
#11 - 9 (havoc, fat joe, remy martin)
#11 (10 - Classic -- Big Noyd & Capone --song starts after the one before it ends)
#12 - 9.5 (Prodigy & jadakiss f/ butch cassidy)
#13 - 3 (baby j, likcel reg, crisis, chedda boy)
#14 - 9.5 (jojo pelligrino f/ kurupt -- great beat)
#15 - 1 (horrible song by hollyhood)
#16 - 8.5 (caddillac tah, fabolous, remy martin, Red Cafe of da Franchise, Fortune, jojo pelligrino, ...)
#17 - 5 (meka, rah digga, spliff star)

5 out of 5 stars Sexual Chocolate Tastes Good to Me.......2003-01-11

... The five stars are for this song only. "Sexual Chocolate" is the bomb. No doubt. Very sexy, a guaranteed dancefloor filler. Cee-Lo sets it off by layering vintage 70's dirty, funk rhythm guitars and horns over a hard hip-hop beat. Things heat up as his lyrics describe dancefloor flirtations that lead to sexual encounters. The song catches fire at the chorus when Cee-Lo calls out repeatedly and lustily, "I feel like freakin' tonight." As the song nears its conclusion, Cee-Lo lets loose his voice in a passionate soul freak out. So what are you waiting for? C'mon and freak somebody. Ooooh Lawd...

4 out of 5 stars Livin' The Life.......2002-12-24

This album falls just short of great because some of the tracks are of poor quality. The best tracks are Livin' The Life and Grimey. The rest are ok, except pop rappers like Ja Rule and LL Cool J should of been left off. Get the album for some nice beats though
