5 out of 5 stars The smooth sounds of Cafe d'Afrique.......2007-07-24

If youre looking for a very relaxing, mellow and laid back sound Cafe d'Afrique is just the thing for you. The house style drum beat that is featured on a majority of the tracks keeps the entire album exciting, fresh and upbeat, while the melodic vocal melodies and synthy chords keep the feel of the album mellow and sophisticated. Its definite lounge material and would be a great addition to anyones party playlist. Its sound is very trendy and would serve as great background music for any social occasion. It is definitely a great representation of the New York City SOHO nightlife scene, while remaining accessible to the average listening situation as well. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Good Dance Music.......2006-10-31

I bought the soundtrack for "Body Beautiful" and "She's A Lady", which are great songs, but the rest of the songs are pretty good, too. Not one of my all time favorite CD's, but good for parties or housework. However, if you haven't seen the movie you have got to get it!! It's hysterical!! Watching Patrick Swayze getting ready for his big night to the tune of "Body Beautiful" is worth the price of the DVD.

4 out of 5 stars What more could a queen want?.......2005-01-28

While "To Wong Foo..." is the perfect combination of drama and sexiness, it has some steep competition with "Priscilla: Queen of the Desert". However, it does hold it's own as a soundtrack loaded with all your favourite divas (i.e., Patti Labelle, Cyndi Lauper and Salt-N-Peppa) and some of their most famous hits. The only downside to the entire CD is the original score medley which brings the high energy down to almost nothingness (unlike "Priscilla" which contained bonus and extended remixes of the most memorable songs). Nevertheless, "To Wong Foo..." remains a must have for anyone who's ever dreamed of being a queen.

5 out of 5 stars I Know I wanna be this, Gucci heels give me cleavage!.......2004-01-30

Boy, Girl, or boy-girl . . . this soundtrack, is, work it baby, own it, one of the best pre-hello my minions, Sat night red carpet anthems.
The movie isn't the best . . i mean if your a drag queen . . you wouldn't travel & live as a woman . . . but that's hollywood . . they killed Thelma & Lousie for heaven sake!
But yeah Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2002-10-02

Style vs Substance - this movie AND cd have both.

HIGHLY recommend it ESPECIALLY to Salt N Pepa fans!

Body Beautiful Baby, WORK that BODY!

haha!

GET IT! NOW! Nice spot with Rupaul at Webster Hall, which if you grew up in NYC is good enough of a reason to get the movie...

5 out of 5 stars "Sometimes it just takes a fairy" (from the film).......1999-10-03

This film and its soundtrack are gay camp at their best!! Cyndi Lauper's remix of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is stellar. In fact, there's not a bad track on this disc! I'd say this soundtrack will one day be up there with its campy predecessor, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." ^_^ Great!

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!!.......2007-06-07

This dance compilation renewed my faith in the possibility of depth and meaning in dance music. Schwarz is a great artist who can paint a flawless canvas of music with character. His mixes are superb. His performance in dance music has the rare ability to move one's soul. His song choices are second to none both musically and lyrically. A dozen listens later, I'm still smiling and going "Wow!"

5 out of 5 stars One of the classic Dj Kicks.......2006-12-17

I have been picky about my DJ Kicks selections..This one is up there on top with Thievery Corp., Vikter Duplaix mix. Excellent cross section of tracks. The mix is seamless and flows great from one track to the next..Just look at the track selection; D'Angelo, Pharoah Sanders, Marvin Gaye, Coldcut.
Certainly one to treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-11-12

This mix album is absolutely fantastic. A must buy!

Henrik soulfully weaves through a number of genres and the placement of tracks is incredibly well thought out. Detroit Techno smoothly transitioning in to South African traditional music - who would have thought it could work? Boy, does it really!

Another reviewer summed this album up perfectly: " It's a CD that tells a story. It contains tracks that ooze class, that reek of history, that are imbued with style. It is a mix that speaks of life's rich tapestry. In short, Henrik Schwarz has delivered a mix with something for your mind, your body, and, most importantly, your soul. "

It has been a while since I felt so good after listening to a new CD!

    Product Description

Pioneers of the London acid jazz scene, the Brand New Heavies translated their love for the funk grooves of the 1970s into a sophisticated sound that carried the torch for classic soul in an era dominated by Hip Hop. Formed in 1985 by drummer/keyboardist Jan Kincaid, guitarist Simon Bartholomew, and bassist/keyboardist Andrew Levy -- longtime school friends from the London suburb of Ealing -- the BNH were originally an instrumental unit inspired by the James Brown and Meters records its members heard while clubbing the rare groove scene in vogue at the moment. The trio soon began recording their own music. One thing lead to another, and now, twenty years later the BNH are world famous, they have put out six great albums, many singles and an endless stream of hits. This album, called "Elephantitis", compiles two and a half hours of incredible remixes, all taken straight off their commercial and promotional singles. Split right down the middle, the remixes, done by legends including Masters at Work (Kenny Dope and Louie Vega), Jay Dee, Davis Morales, Todd Terry, The Angel and Joey Negro, are divided into two catagories: Funk remixes and House remixes, all done between the years of 1991 through 1997. There are two ways to approach this album. If you take it at its most literal--a collection of beats--there's a good chance that you'll find it damn snoozy. You never quite realize how monotonous and downright boring hip-hop tracks can be until you remove the lyrics and are subjected to four minutes of the same bars looping over and over. Pete Rock is a great producer, no question, but he doesn't do much to vary the pace, concocting an album's worth of mid-tempo grooves that go nowhere fast. Which, of course, is the pleasure of listening to it. This is music to stick in the background as you go about your daily routine--cruising in the car, chilling at home, weeding your garden, whatever. There's few better than Pete Rock to compose these simple sonic scores of relaxed, warm tracks that blend funk and a touch of jazz to perfection. There's hardly a flat beat anywhere to be found, and repetitive as they get, the endless, comfortable aural pleasure they give makes up the difference. --Oliver Wang

5 out of 5 stars Soul brotha #1.......2005-10-22

Pete Rock is the illest. Pete set the tone to follow for the entire jazzy-hip-hop esque scence. Petestrumentals is one of those albums you would play on your way to a spoken word session, your girls house, or just ridin' in the whip! Stand out tracks being "A Little Soul", "Play dis at Night" and the tracks with his affiliates "The UN" is cool also. Rock Moss is the illest member in the UN. Long story short, cop this album right away. You won't be dissapointed.

    4 out of 5 stars Raw & Uncut Hip-Hop Jazzyness.......2004-12-09

This album is so tight. I don't know how to explain it. Pete Rock is definetly top 5 producers ever. He mixes the samples up and always comes with that hot beat. Track 13 is amazing, very mellow but at the same time it gets you hyped up. All these songs are hot. Track 8 with CL Smooth is sick. It shows that pete rock and CL should come back and hit us with that heat, it would be certifiable classic 4 sure. Back to this album, pete does some sick outros and intro's to tracks that are really cool, just a short like 10-15 seconds of a tight jazz sample with a hot bassline. This album is a great album for any aspiring rappers. I personally used two of the beats for my first album, but know i got the MPC and makin my own beats. Bottem line Pete Rock is hot and delivers an instrumental album that flows smoothly. Play Dis At Night is one of the smoothest beats i have ever heard with a crazy jazz sample. Petes Jazz is just that some hot jazz that Pete took to a whole other level. The UN are hot but the best track with a rapper on here is "Nothin Lesser" with Freddie Foxx. The Bonus track with the UN #15 is crazy. The Keys that he has in their are sick. So yes indeed this album is hot and i must say you gots to cop it AS SOON AS POSSIBLE its hot as hell

5 out of 5 stars don't listen to the samples above.......2004-11-27

5 out of 5 stars Pure listening pleasure for the purists.......2004-11-02

This album pretty much summed up what I was listening to in 2001 and continue to play on more than a few occasions. Pete Rock really did it with this LP here. There's two versions to Petestrumentals, and I would advise getting both just to have the complete listening pleasure. Although the instrumental tracks are the main meat of this LP in my opinion, the supporting cast did their thing as well. Freddie Foxxx a.k.a. Bumpy Knuckles brutalized the track on "Mind Frame" and the U.N. laid down supreme verses on "Cake" and "Nothin Lesser". Nature gets burn on "To My Advantage". But I save the best accolade for the reunion of CL Smooth, the best to ever do it on a Pete Rock track. "Back on the Block" was a verbal eargasm for any true fan of hip-hop and to see the two back at it again put a lump in my throat. The instrumental tracks are just great music to ride to, from BK to LA and all in between. For the sake of good music, period, cop this album. You will not be dissatisfied.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Hip Hop.......2004-09-23

Im from Memphis and the type of music I here alot is ganster rap and don't get me wrong I love my Tre Six Mafia, Yo Gotti and Project Pat. But I like real hip hop because before all of this, you had this. Pete Rock, Dj Premier, and Erick Sermon and these guy with every song they produce I pick up on it say that Preimer type track just by the bass drum or snare. Same way with Pete Rock and Erick S. This Petestrumental is a great riding to music and you can rap to almost all the tracks. My favorite one on the album is "What you are waiting for" because cymbals and the drum everything goes togather fine in this record. People don't understimate real hip hop because that what it is "real".

    4 out of 5 stars Refresing Incognito!.......2007-03-19

Been a Incognito fan since the way early Nineties (remember them?)I welcome Maysa back into Incognito's fold; She's the soul of Incognito!

I was impressed with the production of this album - WOW! It's so easy to listen to and melodic all beyond. Bluesy should consider returnign to the USA again since I missed him on the East Coast. Missed you again! Ug.

The problems with this album are sublime yet obvious: Too political and the beats seem regurgitated. Aside from this, Bluey should be given a medal for keeping all of us believing in love.

This music makes you believe again...

I have always liked Incognito and this CD did not let me down.

I love this CD and the first is what made me a Incognito fan. I now have 5 CD's by this group.

After hearing and completely enjoying "Aventures in Black Sunshine"- this CD was a letdown. Maybe I need to revisit it after reading the previous reviews?

5 out of 5 stars long live the salsoul orchestra.......2004-04-24

Now this is one hell of an album. If disco and dancing was ever your thing, then this compiliation is absolutly mandatory
It seems like every song is a N.Y club scene classic. The only thing missing was the disco ball!

5 out of 5 stars Another World Of Disco!.......2004-02-09

This collection along with the "Salsoul Classics 2" is very essential to all disco fans that want something different than mainstream artists like Donna Summer, The Bee Gees, Gloria Gaynor...

If you bought "The Disco Box" and/or "The Disco Years, Vol. 1-7", then you will like this collection. Salsoul was just as important to the Disco era as those artists. First Choice, Instant Funk, Double Exposure, and of course The Salsoul Orchestra (which had friendly competition with MFSB and Love Unlimited Orchestra) were talented artists that helped spawn disco. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest songs in Salsoul history.......2004-01-16

Without question the greatest selection of music from the
Disco era and one unforgettable record company.
There is not one day that goes by that I am humming
in my head " My love is free' by Double Exposure.
Loleatta's hits "Hit and run", " Love Sensation" and " Dreamin".
" Doctor Love" and " Double Cross" by First Choice.
The music of 2000 and up will never reach the status of classic.
These are songs that will transcend time and I will never stop
    dancing to them.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Salsoul!!.......2003-11-05

This 2-CD set is a collection of some of Salsoul Records' classic tracks, all in their full-length versions. While many songs here may be familiar to those who heard them in the clubs, there are also some tunes that became radio hits ("I Got My Mind Made Up"-Instant Funk, e.g.). The wide variety of sounds found on this set (spanning roughly from 1975 to 1983), is just mesmerizing. Some tunes are ultimate workout numbers: Loleatta Holloway's "Dreamin'", "Love Sensation" and "Hit And Run", Double Exposure's "Ten Percent", and Ripple's "The Beat Goes On". There are two Shep Pettibone remixes from 1983 of previously released records: "Let No Man Put Asunder" (originally recorded by First Choice in 1977) and "Oooh I Love It (Love Break)", a reworking of Salsoul Orchestra's 1975 LP cut "Chicago Bus Stop". Famed Paradise Garage d.j. Larry Levan's "Garage" version of Inner Life's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" clocks in at 10:27. For those who have just become acquainted with the music of this excellent record label, this 2-disc set is worth every penny!! Other fine cuts from this collection include First Choice's "Love Thang" (1979), Aurra's "Checking You Out" (1982), Inner Life's "Moment Of My Life" (also from 1982), and Skyy's "Call Me" (1981).

5 out of 5 stars Chronic Disco Classics.....................2002-11-30

This a great CD to purchase. This CD is packed with jammin disco classics. Many people try to diss disco, but many don't know or understand how DEEP First Choice or Loletta Holloway really are. There are plenty of disco classic on this CD. First Choice & Loletta both got alot of radio play on Chicago's WBMX 102.7 in the 80's.

This is one great CD! If you want the perfect music to just chill to, this is the one to get. Martin Iveson and Peter Wraight take jazz and electronica to another level with a perfect blend of house music, broken beats and traditional jazz. Though most of the songs are not what many would be dance worthy, the closest contender is 'Strike". Then again, we all need a moment in which we could just sit down, relax and listen to some good music-and you can't get any better than "Labfunk".

    4 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-07-20

This CD will suit you if you're into Jazz (Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Monk) or deep house (the Naked Music Crew). To me this CD not only showcases Mr. Iverson's ear for great music, but it also tells us that the real root for dancemusic is jazz. I was swept away (right off the bat) by the opening track and the airplane sounds soon dillute into a whicked synth and slick bass groove that will rock your chair. A solid vocal hook from a luch female voice tells us Bring A New Day. What a way to start the show! But wait, it soon evolves into Miles Davis type horns, before the entire song is elevated by a three chord progression that screams Herbie! The next song has a bridgey-bass line that twists and turns, with soft melodic keys looming. Track 3 is a NuJazz groove with a deep flap bassline that will make you move - if it doesn't nothing else will. Track 4 is the perfect NYC subway song - if there ever was one - I love how surreal it is. The next song is one of my favorites, smooth vocals, sound horn section, great percussion, key-arrangements, all are fused to form a slowjam that will make you "Feel It". No doubt. Up next is a weird track that's a bit off place, but it's OK as Harmony follows up. That song has a very interesting break that breaks the roof! Tracks 8,9, and 10 feels like a combo to Track 4 - somewhat similar vibes, yet they all have a different groove. To close things off is what is, for my money, the absolute gem - Touch the Sun. It puts me on such a natural high that makes me feel like Icarus! Dancefloor heaven! So, get this CD and spread the word!

4 out of 5 stars Cooler than the other side of the pillow.......2002-06-19

Harmonious, adj. 1. Sweet-sounding, tuneful. 2. Forming a pleasing or consistent whole; concordant. 3. Free from disagreement or dissent.

The liner notes speak for itself. This album has an attitude to it. Breakbeat, House, Downtempo, and Jazz equate to Labfunk being a well pieced together free flowing form which echoes a throwback to the 70s with plenty of funk included. Those muted horns, driving keyboards, and garage-tinged bass lines are excellent. Do not expect any sounds to get your party hopping but the finesse and ease of delivery would be a perfect night cap for any fan of the above noted music genres. Herbie Hancock was one of the primary motivators behind this album and is directly credited in the liner notes. This album has 1974 written all over it. Gotta love it. Gotta have it. While I can't give it a 5-star rating, it is a super solid 4. For a slower version of Labfunk be sure to explore Muki's Quiet Riot album.

    4 out of 5 stars House+Jazz=Atjazz.......2002-04-07

It seems like such a simple equation but it must be more difficult than we think since so few artists can calculate the answer correctly. Fortunately for us, Atjazz found the proper solution. Nice house/broken beat (I hate sub-genres) fused with jazz elements that reach back through time and tap Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock for inspiration. This is eclectic enough to appeal to more than just house fans. It's laid-back enough to chill to but there's enough going on musically to hold your attention. A very solid release!
If you're seeking something that fuses jazz and electronica a bit more organically you should try Erik Truffaz-Revisite or DJ Krush & Toshinori Kondo-Ki Oku. Both are outstanding records.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The funk is over.......2005-06-06

Reading at the leaflet inside the CD, BNH say America forgot to funk in the 90's. I think now there is no funk at all. BNH were the last hope and now it's all over. There are some excellent groups (I've been an Incognito fan for years and Jamiroquai is on my CD player almost every week), but BNH is what you expect for real funk.

This compilation is the answer. Listen to it and you will find a pure, complex, grooving and marvellous music. I cannot find anything but good songs. I've got some favourites, of course. Some of them make me sing, some make me dance, some make me smile. All of them make me feel optimistic.

    My favourite:
    - Saturday Nite: great for dance.
    - Dream Come True: incredible 7 minute song. Wow wow, yeah yeah.
    - Dream On Dreamer: a masterpiece: lyrics, rhythm, arrangements, everything.
    - Midnight At The Oasis: extraordinary melody.
    - You Are The Universe: the best love declaration.
    - Shelter: boys also sing.
    - You've Got A Friend: versions don't have to be worse than the original.
    - Gimme One Of Those: perfect to make you smile.

I feel delighted listening to this CD. But, after this, BNH is over. And so is funk.

5 out of 5 stars Words fail me.......2001-06-02

This is a truly great album. That should by rights be the end of this review but it can't be - everyone must know and love this music.

It is impossible to be sad while listening to this album. From the moment the bassline of "Saturday Nite" hits you you'll be dancing and happy. I speak from experience - the day I bought this album I was having a pretty bad run of things but the instant I put it on all my troubles vanished.

The album almost works like brain anaesthetic. The jamming on tracks like "Dream Come True" has a marvellously sedating effect on the listener and trying to follow one instrument through the other tracks is the musical equivalent of counting sheep.

Not to say this album is boring, far from it. It is truly an album made for parties. While almost no one may begin the party knowing who these guys are, it would be a rare party indeed which would end without at least 5 people asking if they could "borrow" this CD.

The vocals by N'Dea Davenport, Siedah Garrett and Carleen Anderson are just awe-inspiring. All three ladies can move from singing very high-pitched right down to the kind of voice you associate with smoky bars - and they can do this on a dime. The music is even better.

The Heavies are solidly rooted in the funk tradition and they don't let you forget it. Whether it be the funky basslines inspiring memories of Parliament or the intricate drum breaks to begin some of the tracks - you could really be excused for thinking you were back in the 70s.

Standout tracks? well, all of them in short. But in long:

Saturday Nite: the best way to open the album, a great bassline with Anderson funking away in the vox department.

Dream Come True: It starts off slowly but builds to an incredible jam session by the end. My CD player is convinced that it takes about 7:45 to do this but it sure desn't feel like it.

Dream On Dreamer: A mervellous vocal backed by some spot-on drumming. Watch the intro and tell me what you think.

Midnight At The Oasis: I first heard this song on a casino ad here in Brisbane. The properly funked version is much better all around. The vocals here from Siedah are incredible.

BNH: This is possibly the best track on the album. A wonderfully slow-building instrumental which you never want to finish. One of the rare instrumentals by groups with singers that really don't need vocals.

In all - you need this album. Everyone needs this album. Get it.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential Acid-Jazz Album.......2001-01-16

I'm glad this album is available here in the Philippines, though very very rare, I manage to get the last one in our vicinity. Like EWF, this band has got a lot of R&B flavor in it that makes you wanna groove all night long. Funky bass lines that I have always come to love in Cool-jazz recordings are ever present here...Personal favs are probably BNH, Saturday nite, and Sometimes. Get this album, it's worth the import price tag!!!!

4 out of 5 stars I almost remember their name now.......2000-01-02

Always had a hard time to remember this bands name, but I know that I totally loved the songs I heard beeing play from BNH once in a while. It was painful not knowing who sang these catchy tunes that totally got stuck on my head and made my body wanna move. With this album I'm beginning to know who they are and I realize how many good songs they've actually done.In the beginning of every song I'm thinking -wow,this one's theirs too?All my favouritesongs in one album.I'm amazed...and tired from dancing. This albums can even make the gloomiest days sunny.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Incognito Album. Great Jazz!.......2006-06-19

Well the specific genre of Jazz this is considered is Acid Jazz. Incognito was at a creative and musical peak with this album. I recently sometimes hear "Still a Friend of Mine" on smooth jazz stations. From the opening of "Step into my Life" I was hooked. Maysa's vocal are incredible, and Bluey really lets his creative arrangements loose. Too bad I can't say that about Incognito's recent albums. If you like this album I would also recommend "Beneath the Surface" which is the second best album released by Incognito IMO.

    4 out of 5 stars Positivity - 4.5 stars.......2006-04-15

I just pulled this favorite out and listened for the first time in a while. Although released in 1993, the music is truly TIMELESS and sounds as fresh as if it were released yesterday. This is my favorite Incognito album featuring excellent music production, the British acid-jazz sound and with more than a few stellar lead vocal performances by Maysa Leak.

My favorite tracks: DEEP WATERS, STILL A FRIEND OF MINE, DO RIGHT, STEP INTO MY LIFE, SMILING FACES & PIECES OF A DREAM.

5 out of 5 stars Still a friend of mine...........2005-03-15

Even after all these years, this remains my favorite Incognito album...from start to finsih! Each and every song, jazzy, soulful, melodic, upbeat, downtempo, with meaningful lyrics! I still play the heck out of this CD...the uplift it gives is unbelievable... The best!
