If one's notion of "world music" promises a touch of the exotic and indigenous, often overlooked is the fact that the influence of western pop music has seeped into every corner of the globe, creating a hybrid that's often more than merely the sum of its influences. Theater vet Brightman steps into that pan-cultural hall of mirrors here, wedding her fascination with the music and rhythms of the "forbidden places" (the title's Arabic meaning) of the Middle East to her own oft ethereal vocal charms and rock-solid sense of drama. And if the diva's equally sound crossover sensibilities (and that of longtime producer Frank Peterson) sometimes mire it in familiar world-beat pastiche, Brightman's charmed muse manages some transcendent moments nonetheless. Her musical borrowings (Borodin for the title track; Puccini's *Madame Butterfly* for "It's a Beautiful Day") are as compelling as her choice of collaborators: classical violin star Nigel Kennedy and Iraqi vocalist Kadim Al Sahir add compelling touches to the weary timeliness of "The War is Over." The musical influences range from Europe across the Mediterranean and as far East as the Indian roots of "Bollywood" composer A.R. Rahman's "The Journey Home" and Brightman's own "You Take My Breath Away" to evocative recastings of the emblematic standards "Stranger in Paradise" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," while ex-Killing Joke keyboardist Jaz Coleman provides the savory East-meets-West orchestrations that ensure Brightman's star turns the seamless foundations they deserve. --Jerry McCulley

As usual a quick and effecient service ,especially for people who live abroad.Keep up the excellent work John Williams.
New to Sarah Brightman.......2007-03-12
I'm very new to Sarah brightman's music and I enjoy this CD. I think she has an amazing voice. Very talented young woman and this cd was very relaxing and joyful to listen to. I like to learn and heard more from Sarah Brightman.
Stranger in Paradise - More Like Stranger in a Lost Cause.......2006-12-30
I'm not throughly pleased with this album! This CD is only good if you know how to dance in a Middle-Easters fashion. About half of each track is dominated by all orchestrations and no Sarah. Plus, Pop-Sarah isn't really for me. I much prefer the Classical-Sarah. Some of the tracks are okay, like "Harem", "The Journey Home", "Beautiful", and "Stranger in Paradise". Really, this is a good CD for your collection, but I wouldn't listen to it on a 24/7 basis.
No voice like hers in the world.......2006-10-01
I own this cd. I saw her in person at the "Harem" concert. Never had I heard or seen any voice like this. What a performer, best concert I'd ever seen. Beautiful voice, I can never get enough of Sarah Brightman's music. It is so comforting at times. I have all her music and this cd makes you wonder, how can she top this? Thank you Sarah Brightman for giving us your beautiful gift of music.
Brilliant Brightman, Her best CD........2006-09-18
Sarah is just the best, she can hit any note and her individuality shines on this CD. She sings "The Journey Home" from the musical Bombay Dreams and her voice just soars. "Harem", "Mysterious Ways" and "You Take My Breah Away" are songs that take me to dreamland. Amazing! A master piece!

Haines does it again, but better!.......2007-07-31
So here we have another release from Emily and the Soft Skeleton. I can say without reservation that this EP is a masterpiece. I was lukewarm on Knives Don't Have Your Back. Yeah it had some gems, but there were some misses as well. This EP is all hits. The songwriting is more mature; the musical arrangements are lush; and Emily sounds as good as ever. I wish she waited and put these songs with the stronger songs on the Knives CD... Man that would've been an album for the ages. But please, don't sleep on this album. It may only be 5 songs (+ one remix), but they are definitely songs you want to have in your collection.

Perfect in every way!.......2007-01-04
Quick as lightening ship and this is my favorite CD ever!!!
BUY THE REMASTERED VERSION INSTEAD.......2006-11-06
Just wanted to point out that you should buy the remastered version of this album, which has been released as a twofer with "Souvenirs", the only albums of his that have been remastered so far. I urge you to support this release instead of buying the old non-remastered versions. It's high time all of Dan's old albums get remastered. After all, this is 2006!
Amazing Album, But This Edition Is A Significant Remix.......2006-06-13
From the other reviews here, it appears that most people are not aware that this is a significant remix, & not at all the same version that was released on vinyl. Please see my review of the 2006 UK BGO Remastered Edition which uses the original mix for more details on this.
Home Free.......2006-01-28
I much prefer Dan Fogelberg's music on vinyl records instead of cd. I've gotten numerous of his albums on 33 rpm vinyl and find them to have a much better and more original sound than the cd's. This particular album is great, with the track "To The Morning" my personal favorite. It's a beautiful song about not wanting to wake up. "It's going to be a day, there is really no way to say no to the morning." Unfortunately, the cd doesn't seem to do justice to any of Dan's work. I highly recommend finding this album and the Netherlands album on vinyl. It'll be well worth it.
A pleasire for the ears.......2006-01-10
I first bought this album on vynal 20yrs ago, Dan's voice has such a wonderful tenor range. His songs flow like honey to the ears. There is not a bad song in the lot all are great. This is probaly his best. I highly recmond it

Customer Reviews:
excellent, except for dropouts.......2007-07-29
i adore these first two dan fogelberg records. i've been a fan of his since the early 80s, when my brother recommended i check out dan's home free album. as a 13 or 14 year old fledgling singer/pianist, i instantly sat down to learn to play all of the songs courtesy of a songbook my brother also had. i credit these great songs and albums for leading me to become the songwriter i am today.
now, for the details concerning these albums. i can honestly say that i like every track on both, but i'll start by mentioning the highlights (at least what i consider them to be).
home free - standout tracks: to the morning, be on your way, wysteria
souvenirs - standout tracks: souvenirs, the long way, song from half mountain
as you can see, i favor the mellow side of things...but believe me, the upbeat numbers are fantastic as well. the only drawback to this remaster is the dropout during "the river" that were mentioned by a previous reviewer. hopefully, future versions will correct that error - and i also hope that the new remaster of captured angel/nether lands is glitch free.
Sound is excellent, except for the dropouts.......2007-06-22
I agree with the opinion that the sound of these remasters is generally excellent. However, nobody has mentioned the frequent dropouts that occur during "The River", the last track on "Home Free". These dropouts occur in the left channel, starting at about 3:30 and continuing for a full minute, making this track unlistenable on headphones. I'm shocked that BGO would release this track in such poor condition. I would've given this release five stars, but the dropouts cripple an otherwise excellent remaster.
THANK YOU, BGO RECORDS!.......2006-08-23
The one reviewer, who complains about the sound quality of this new rerelease obviously hasn't listened to the old, non-remastered cd versions in a long time. Songs such as "Be On Your Way" and "Hickory Grove" definitely have a fuller sound, and if you listen to the drum intro to the wonderful "Illinois" and compare it to the previous versions, even the remastered one on the 1997 "Portrait" box set, you'll no longer doubt the improved sound quality. These are among Dan Fogelberg's very best albums, so this is a great package. I really hope Bgo Records will continue to rerelease Dan's old records. I can't wait for my all-time favorite album ("Nether Lands")to be remastered. Love ya, Dan.
Dan' Remasters.......2006-08-07
Disappointing is the best way of describing this release. The mastering of these to great albums just does not cut it. Sure there is a marginal improvement on "Souvenirs" but "Home Free" is only as good and the late eighties release. The sleave notes or rubbish. I had high hopes for this release given the brilliance of the albums and therefore must rate it lower not for the content but the mastering. BGO have made much better efforts than this i.e. Dory Previn. If you have the older recordings don't bother if you don't the albums are worth getting. The mastering refers to "digital remastering of Original tape" as opposed to the more common Remaster from "Original Master Tapes" which may give an insight as to the lack of improvement.
an essential remaster.......2006-07-18
i agree with the previous reviewer. the sound improvement is excellent. serious dan fans have waited 20 years for these cds to be upgraded. hopefully, all of dan's cd will get remastered, at least thru "the innocent age". thanks to bgo records.

BEST CD I OWN!.......2007-05-13
This is by far my favorite Sarah Brightman Cd. Although it is probably her most pop oriented cd, it totally rocks! Most of the songs have a Middle Eastern Edge to them and are awesome to blast in the car! Make sure to try to get the version with either the bonus Dvd or the french tracks!
FIVE STARS!
not the best.......2007-04-12
I agree with "music fan" about this CD. Eden is a good album, and she's a good artist. But either this album was poorly produced or something, because this does not show her best. I wouldn't classify this as world music at all, because the instruments aren't used and it's more classical pop; if that's a genre. It seemed rambly to me with many of the songs sounding similar and lacking originality. I love her, she's unique in her genre. But she really shines as a classicist, with Classics, her work by Andrew Lloyd Webber (who she married) and operatic albums. This is what she's best at, so her collaborations on Eden and La Luna, which are classical in nature but still allowed her to branch out musically, turned out good. I have a lot of her albums, but I wouldn't buy this one. It's more something to listen to once. A few of the songs are good, the album isn't terrible, but it's not very good.
Excellent CD/DVD set.......2007-03-31
This is a very good CD/DVD set, beautiful music and performance.I enjoyed it.
Magical Sarah Brightman.......2006-12-24
Sarah's voice soars! I love her voice and I'm a new fan. ^^ I've heard her name lots of times before from people I know and when I received some of her CDs and videos as early Christmas present, I was in awe! She definitely has the voice of an angel.
Welcome to the Forbidden.......2006-06-10
"Harem" is probably one of Sarah Brightman's most unique albums to date. Rarely an artist can captivate the sounds of the far east and be able to mix them in well with a western feel. west meets east if you will. Its nearly impossible to pick out one favorite out of the 14 tracks on the album. You can't choose "Harem" over "The War Is Over" or "Arabian Nights". All the songs on the album are the best and do the album justice and fit perfectly in their own way, as the theme is quite clear: Middle-Eastern music with a hint of pop and some club sounds. And while the album could have ended at "Until the End of Time" (yet another beautiful song on the album), Brightman ends the album with "You Take My Breath Away" (originally from her album Fly). Personally, this track should have been only present on "Harem" and not on the album "Fly". An excellent way nonetheless of ending the album.
The DVD shows the making of the album, and the video Harem is also on the DVD along with an alternate version to the video. Its the first time i've ever seen a video from Sarah Brightman and i must say, i'm not disappointed at all.
I'm anxiously awaiting a new album. I'm a new fan of Brightman's and i love what i'm hearing from this album. Highly recommended.

I think that Basil Poledouris has composed another wonderful score for another Free Willy film. I wish more of his music could have been heard. I love his score. The rest of the songs are ok, and I think Michael Jackson's Childhood is no where near as good as Will You Be There. Thank you.

A very good CD to buy.......2005-07-06
I have bought many CD regarding American patriotic songs but it is the one that I prefer. The songs are sung in a very classic way and so, there are easy to listen. Jon English as a tenor gives an excellent performance. On the piano, Rob Carriker gives also an excellent performance; he does not try to cover the voice of Jon English but just to support his voice. So, Jon English and Rob Carriker form a very fine duo and the quality of recording is excellent. The choice of songs is also excellent. I strongly recommend this CD.
What an Excellent Work of Art!.......2002-08-30
John English has a booming and resounding voice. Well suited for the rough and tough songs of our countries historic wars. It is an excellent buy, and I recommend it to any fans of great songs and American historics!
Excellent!.......2002-08-30
This cd is excellent! I reccomend it to everyone!! Jonathon English has got an amazing voice!
What A Blast - A Fun and Inspiring CD.......2002-07-30
I have to admit - I didn't know what I'd be getting when I bought this album. I love Americana and have known some of these songs all my life: K-K-K-Katy, Keep the Home-Fires Burning, and Tenting on the Old Camp Ground. Others that are listed I had never heard before: The Soldier's Tear, When Alexander Takes His Ragtime Band to France, and the very funny Captain Jinks! From first to last I found this CD a joy to hear. Jon English has a beautiful voice, and he sings with such clarity that you can understand every word! There are songs that will get your feet taping, and others that will bring a tear to your eye. The chorus is quite obviously not a professional choir, and that's all the better! They sing with an infectious energy and spirit that'll make you want to sing along. Add into that the horns, flute and percussion and this album becomes very pleasant experience. This is one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time, and I heartily recommend it.

Rare beauty.......2004-04-09
This is recording is one of my favorites: Spirituals played with a wonderful playful attitude.
Warm, beautiful, intense, cosy and "on the edge".
Check it out.

GREAT.......2007-01-12
If you are into this type of thing then you will absolutely LOVE it.
Decent Matrix Tribute.......2005-12-13
Animatrix - The Album opens very strongly with the scintillating, mellowing, "Who Am I?," "Big Wednesday," and "Blind Tiger." The electronic arrangements fit very well with the psychological mood of the world of the Matrix. Unfortunately, tracks four through twelve are not as strong. Tracks eleven and twelve include music and dialouge from the original film score: but it is just the same three or four lines by Neo and Morpheus repeated over and over. In Track eleven, "Red Pill, Blue Pill," the only spoken words are "take the red pill; take the blue pill" over and over, by an unknown voice (not Reeves or Fishburne) and some amateur mixing that sounds like a "do it yourself Party DJ Mixer Kit." If you are at a Rave, I suppose these last two tracks would be right up your alley.
an enigma.......2005-10-28
i've enjoyed most of the soundtracks on the animatrix cd but as i watch the movie i always miss sumthin outta it...does someone out there posses info on where i could get the soundtrack played when the girl goes lookin for her cat in the wiered building and finds them boys playin with the nature of the building...?and then just when the girl picks the feather from its hovering mode..the cat scares a white dove into flight then the music that i'm lookin for begins...if someone out there knows what i'm lookin for...plz page me on erwogera@hotmail.com
Good, but not great.......2005-09-08
This CD has some really excellent tracks, some OK ones, and some that make you scratch you head with "what-were-the-artists-thinking" kind of bewilderment. As mentioned by a previous reviewer, the track Masters of the Universe (when the Kid is escaping the Agents on his skateboard), amazingly, is omitted. However, the first track (the "credits" music), Supermoves, and Conga Fury are great fun to listen to.
As for the genre itself, Trance seems to me to be the equivalent of classical music for our time. Some is good, some is bad, but it all gives you a sense of free-mind feel, without words or lyrics or pop influences mucking up the experience of the music itself. If that makes any sense...
Somewhere around a 4.7.......2005-08-01
Nope... its not another unenjoyable rap or pop album. What I'm trying to get at is that its so, so sad that electronic music is not popular and deserves to be. Repeatable lovey-dovey pop and false rap is what mostly strikes listeners through the radio. Though I do understand electronic music is meant for mainstream listening and is meant to stay deep underground in the clubs, lets hope to see electronic music favored in the future.
Due to some great electronic tracks left out from the film, I did give the compilation a 4.5, but nonetheless, being a huge electronic/techno fan, is a very well done and not far from a masterpiece.
Most Favored Track:
"Beauty Never Fades"
"Martenot Waves"
"Under The Gun"
"Hands Around My Throat"
"Conga Fury"
& a few from the film that were sadly left out.

Boskovsky's encyclopedic collection with the Vienna Philharmonic, recorded between 1957 and 1976, is as close to definitive as one is likely to get. There was a special camaraderie between Boskovsky and the Philharmonic--he was a member of the orchestra's violin section for 37 years and conducted their New Year's Day concerts from 1955 until 1979. There was also a special empathy that these performers, as custodians of a tradition going back to its origins, felt for the music of the Strauss family. It comes across quite wonderfully on these mid-price CDs, which have been painstakingly remastered for an edition every collector should have. --Ted Libbey
Customer Reviews:
Superb collection.......2006-03-07
If you love or are just curious about the music of Vienna's Strauss family, this is the box set for you. You need look no further. Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic set the standards for the performance of these sublime waltzes, polkas and marches. The sound is fine, too, even though the recordings are not new. This is, quite simply, a magnificent set. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Boskovsky and the Strauss Family of Vienna........2003-06-12
A long series of Strauss music recordings conducted by Willi Boskovsky provides the contents of this slender, super-compact box of 6 CDs. Those who collected the original issues should check the contents before jettisoning them, because not everything has been reissued here. I especially regret that the vocal version of "An der schönen blauen Donau" has been omitted.
No combination has ever excelled Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in performing this repertoire. Although the waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, marches and overtures were performed over and over again by these musicians, there is never a hint of workaday routine or staleness to be heard here. Everything seems to unfold naturally. Each item's inherent character is displayed. Tiny nuances and felicities of phrasing and a balance that favors the melody and reduces the accompaniment make these performances inimitable. The performance of "Morgenblätter" seems to provide a tad more excitement and impact than the other 85 items.
The recordings were made between 1960 and 1976. They are studio recordings, not deriving from the famous New Year concerts, and all but the few items from the very earliest year provide excellent sound.
